OR 75 YEARS, the Tucson Airport Authority has connected Southern Arizona to communities near and far from the majestic desert landscape we call home. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and better yet, we are surrounded by incredibly talented artists. No matter the medium, art of all forms is both created and enjoyed across Tucson—including at the Tucson International Airport (TUS). While we are well known for convenient travel and exceptional customer service, our art program has quietly supported local artists for more than 35 years. From the colorful cacti along the curbside pickup area to the expanding permanent art collection inside the terminal, art is everywhere at TUS. Local artists vie for space in three rotating galleries that host new exhibits twice each year. All of it helps our employees, passengers and visitors to feel like they are in the desert Southwest. We recognize the need to support art beyond our airport. We embrace the value it brings to our community, much like TUS, which generates $8.3B annually in economic activity. Your local airport is working nonstop for Tucson providing jobs, supporting commercial development and ensuring safe travels to and from Southern Arizona. I encourage you to book your next trip through TUS. I am confident you will enjoy a clean, convenient experience. And if you have no travel plans in the immediate future, I still invite you to the terminal to enjoy the galleries and many individual pieces. Tucson Airport Authority has been and will continue to be a pillar in our community. When your airport thrives, your community thrives! Sincerely,

FRANKENSTEIN | PHOTO BY ANDREW OUSLEY

ARIZONA OPERA’S 2023/24 SEASON INCLUDES ICONIC OPERAS FEATURING star-crossed lovers, mistaken identities and salacious escapades, plus a World Premiere based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

DON GIOVANNI | PHOTO BY TIM TRUMBLE

W

ith a riveting, cinematic score and libretto by Gregg Kallor, The Creature is brought to life only to be forsaken by its creator, Victor Frankenstein. Embracing Shelley’s original text, Frankenstein gives poignant voice to The Creature’s struggle and lays bare the horror of alienation and “otherness” with exquisite nuance. Love, mistaken identity and humor are woven throughout Rossini’s comic masterpiece, The Barber of Seville. Dressed in disguise, Almaviva tries to earn Rosina’s affection for who he truly is, rather than for money and status. With the help of Figaro, Almaviva stops at nothing as he pursues Rosina through a series of comical hijinks and bait-and-switch facades. Almaviva manages to win Rosina’s heart with love and laughter triumphing in the end.

ROMÉO & JULIETTE | PHOTO BY KAREN ALMOND PHOTOGRAPHY FOR OPERA SAN ANTONIO

Gounod's romantic and rapturous music sets the stage for this tale of star-crossed lovers, based on Shakespeare’s timeless play about the power of love, Roméo & Juliette. It begins when Roméo sneaks into the Capulet’s ball, where he falls instantly in love with Juliette. The two affirm their love in the iconic balcony scene. The couple plan to fake their deaths in a desperate attempt to be together, culminating in an ending that is as tragic as it is heartbreakingly beautiful. Mozart’s Don Giovanni, regarded by many as one of the greatest operas of all time, tells the centuries-old story of the libertine Don Juan. The opera follows Don Giovanni’s salacious escapades, aided by his servant Leporello. Giovanni makes his rounds seducing and duping numerous characters, bragging along the way and escaping accountability by obscuring his identity. Tickets are now available! Neil Simon’s classic romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park opens ATC’s season, followed by the Christmas musical spectacular Scrooge!, which is sure to become a new holiday tradition for Arizona families. Intimate Apparel (written by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lynn Nottage) and the Tony Award-winning play Master Class bring powerful stories to ATC stages. Pulitzer Finalist and Tony-nominated play True West closes out the 2023/2024 Season. “Get ready for a powerful lineup of five of the best American plays to come out of the last 60 years,” says Matt August, ATC Kasser Family Artistic Director. “ATC’s 56th Season is going to be a joyful and emotional season with wondrous, colorful characters to enjoy.” Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon, directed by Michael Berresse (September 23-October 13). Blissful, ambitious young newlyweds struggle to get along in their Manhattan fixer-upper apartment, all while under the gaze of the bride's neurotic mother and eccentric upstairs neighbor. In a case of opposites attract, the lovers quickly face newlywed challenges that can try the best of marriages. Scrooge! The Musical by Leslie Bricusse, directed by Matt August (November 7-December 2). A groundbreaking adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this extravaganza is packed with songs as impressive as the ones Bricusse wrote for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Grab your family and friends for this classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge as this musical adventure leads him toward hopeful redemption. Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, directed by Oz Scott (January 20-February 10). Successful 14

African American seamstress Esther’s business acumen, innovative skills and utter discretion are much in demand by diverse clientele. You see, it’s 1905 and she crafts elegant and revolutionary undergarments for an array of women – from high-society socialites to enterprising ladies of the night. At 35, her personal life has taken a backseat, but all that is about to change. Master Class by Terrence McNally, directed by Marcia Milgrom-Dodge (March 2-23). Uncompromising opera diva Maria Callas delivers a life-altering master class at an elite opera training program to three vastly different students who are by turns hilariously crushed, soulfully uplifted and profoundly inspired by her singular artistry. Based on a series of real-life classes Callas delivered at Juilliard, Master Class carves a window into the soul of one of the most complicated and celebrated artists of the 20th century who pushed the boundaries of artistic sacrifice and quality. True West by Sam Shepard, directed by Jenn Thompson (April 27-May 18). This hysterically twisted Cain and Abel story set against the Dreams of the American West unfolds as estranged brothers—successful screenwriter Austin and alcoholic drifter Lee—torment each other until they are forced to collaborate on a screenplay for Austin’s producer with the promise of a huge Hollywood payday. Ultimately reversing roles and finding themselves in each other’s shoes, the two brothers discover that this town ain't big enough for the both of them. For more information, visit atc.org or call 833.ATC.SEAT.

PROFILE: Matt August Age: 53 Residence: I split my time evenly between Phoenix and Tucson. Favorite food: Sunday night steaks barbequed by my dad when I was a kid. Favorite play: That’s tricky! One of my favorites is Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon, which I consider to be the perfect comedy. In a different genre, I love Scenes from an Execution by Howard Barker, which is a story of a female renaissance painter who stood up to politicians by painting a piece that reflected the horror of war rather than the romanticizing of it. How I have fun: Fly fishing. Something that might surprise you about me: As a kid, I was dyslexic. And not surprisingly, I kept getting thrown out of English class.

N

amed Arizona Theatre Company’s Kasser Family Artistic Director in January 2023, Matt August brings experience as a theatre, opera and film director as well as educator. His productions have broken Broadway boxoffice records (Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and played in London, across the UK, off-Broadway, in major regional theatres, at festivals, on national tours, at the Grand Ole Opry and for three holiday seasons at Madison Square Garden. His work has also been featured on television and radio including NPR, in many film festivals and even at the White House. You are no stranger to ATC; what was your first involvement with the company? In 2016, I directed The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord and we had our most sophisticated version of the show here. Then I was asked to do King Charles III in the fall. During those back-to-back productions, I really admired ATC’s robust and talented production department that enabled us to build two of the most visually astonishing shows that I've done in my career. It was pretty easy to fall in love with ATC.

What do you look for in a project? I really enjoy the experiences where I get to deep dive into the script and culture that the stories come from. I have tried to only do projects that I feel very passionate about, so it becomes something that I am deeply invested in on a personal level. I work to figure out methods to speak to the audience in a way that is going to both delight and emotionally move them, but also hopefully somehow change them. What excites you about the future of ATC? We have a passionate core support community in Arizona made up of adventurous audience members who are very smart and love to laugh and that is going to allow us to have some very exciting and ambitious programming as we return to larger-scale productions. We have a really interesting model with a two-city operation. We are building every single show we produce to essentially tour. There is huge potential to continue our theatre’s reach around the state and around the country. Our staff and production teams are fantastic. For the full interview, visit atc.org. BALLET TUCSON Takes Aim at the Extraordinary

“D

ance transcends words and sparks our belief in the extraordinary,” says Margaret Mullin, Artistic Director of Ballet Tucson, Tucson’s premiere professional dance company. Showcasing glorious artistry and technical power, the company’s 2023-24 season promises a tantalizing mix of returning classics, renowned works new to the company and adventurous premieres.

The company partners with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for the season’s centerpiece, its much-beloved ballet The Nutcracker, featuring sensational dancing, lavish costumes, magical sets and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score performed live at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall by the orchestra’s musicians. This vibrant community partnership is made possible by the James H. and Frances R. Allen Family Foundation in loving memory of Nancy Causbie. A notable feather in Ballet Tucson’s cap is its 18

growing repertoire of works by George Balanchine (Fall Concert). This year’s addition is the dazzling and courtly Divertimento No. 15, set to the music of Mozart. This program also features the return of Balanchine’s iconic Serenade, a season highlight for Principal Ballerina Danielle Cesanek, who relishes its imaginative freedom. “I love that there is no set story but with all the drama and dancing, the audience can make their own.” Dancing Balanchine’s ballets is an adrenaline rush, she adds, because the speed and strength they demand is exciting for dancers and audiences alike. For fans of the great classical ballets, the Winter Concert weaves a spell of dark mystery and romanticism in Giselle Act II, while the Spring Concert opens with the Spanish flair and fireworks of Paquita. Scattered throughout the season, five company premieres treat audiences to cutting-edge choreography by celebrated artists. “For a dancer, there are few things as exciting as

new creation processes,” says soloist Edward Oyarce-Solomon. He’s especially looking forward to Kiyon Ross’ Sum Stravinsky (Spring Concert) and a world premiere by Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Chieko Imada, inspired by French chanteuse Edith Piaf, performed with live music in partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival (Winter Concert). New for the company will also be works by Andrea Schermoly, Paul Gibson, Artistic Director Margaret Mullin and Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon (MJ The Musical and An American in Paris). Mullin’s ethereal Lost in Light (Winter Concert) originated up north during her stellar career as a soloist with Pacific Northwest Ballet, but its creative team makes it quintessentially Tucson. Now in her second year at Ballet Tucson’s helm, Mullin trained at the School of Ballet Tucson before heading to Seattle. Lost in Light features music by Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence Dan Coleman, with costumes by another Tucsonan, designer Alexis Mondragón.

The School of Ballet Tucson continues to thrive under the leadership of its new Directors Danielle and Liang Fu, also star Principal dancers in the professional company. An integral part of the organization’s mission, the company’s official school provides first-class training for serious students. Mullin stresses that it’s an equally wonderful school for anyone who wants to learn about ballet and have fun doing it. The School of Ballet Tucson teaches tomorrow’s dancers and tomorrow’s fans, fostering a lifelong love of dance. Ballet Tucson’s 2023-24 season promises audiences the wonder of experiencing a superb and moving art. For more information, visit ballettucson.org or call 520.903.1445.

Ballet Tucson aims to expand its community collaborations and outreach to spread the joy of dance. “I want to share this beautiful art form and all it has to offer with this community that I grew up in, whether onstage, in our classrooms or around the city through our

outreach programs,” says Mullin. Look for popup performances and the annual Footprints at the Fox concert, which gives company dancers the chance to become choreographers. Ballet Tucson’s Membership Program offers opportunities to visit classes and rehearsals, as well as meet dancers and guest artists.

As you walk into The Rogue Theatre, giant puppets and painted Renaissance tapestries greet you. Fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies fill the snack bar. Live musicians play on the stage. An enthusiastic crowd gathers on the colorful Mexican tile in the historic lobby. When Joe McGrath and Cindy Meier began The Rogue Theatre in 2005, they decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with the world’s greatest authors. They wanted to produce theater that was beautiful and profound. And they wanted to find a group of people, an audience, who longed to share challenging and meaningful stories about the human experience. Eighteen years later, The Rogue Theatre is still going strong. artist’s earnings. Tucson Fringe also provides the Tucson arts community with avant-garde, non-traditional performing arts at low-cost ticket prices. The festival does not curate or select the performances, maintaining an environment in which everyone and anyone can perform. This ensures that underrepresented artistic voices, such as people of color, the LGBT+ community, women and other marginalized genders are championed in our community. The festival takes place in January every year across multiple venues in downtown Tucson. On average, every year, the festival has 20+ shows with 50-60 performances during the weekend. Tickets for the festival go on sale in fall 2023. Ticket prices are $15 for live inperson performances and $12 for live Zoom performances during the festival. Multi-show passes are also available during the festival. Join the Tucson Fringe Festival for its 13th annual festival. For more information, visit www.tucsonfringe.org.

Beginning in 2024, the nationally touring Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea exhibit brings five large sea creature sculptures made from ocean beach debris to TBG. Young and old alike will be in awe as well as educated on our environment and the impact we have. The exhibit runs through June. “All aboard!” as we celebrate TBG’s 50th anniversary on the grounds of the historical Porter property. To mark the milestone, Tucson Botanical Gardens will debut the Great Garden Express, its very own permanent train exhibit, in May of 2024. Featuring Southwest landmarks and missions, this custom-built installation will be just the ticket for train enthusiasts. For more information, visit tucsonbotanical.org or call 520.326.9686.

PULSE Weavings and Paintings by Marlowe Katoney

University of Arizona Museum of Art

OCTOBER 14, 2023 MARCH 23, 2024 Details at azart.fyi/pulse

Marlowe Katoney, Tucson-Memento (Axis Radius #4 ), 2019, Wool, aniline dyes, and vegetal dyes, Collection of Roger and Caroline Ford

WEAVING TRADITION with Contemporary Art

F

or Marlowe Katoney (Diné), it is limiting to abide by popular perceptions of beauty and a readily-identified Navajo aesthetic. First trained as a painter at the University of Arizona, the Winslow-based artist was taught to weave by his maternal grandmother in 2010. Now, Katoney uses his practice to contextualize Navajo weaving in the contemporary art world. His hybrid approach combines traditional iconography with references to his own life, street art, nature and popular culture. Pulse: Weavings and Paintings by Marlowe Katoney features thirty works by the artist, created over the span of fifteen years and drawn from both private and public collections. The exhibition opens at the University of Arizona Museum of Art on Oct. 14. For more information, visit artmuseum.arizona.edu.
