EMBRACED. Of all the enthralling “E” words out there, our favorite is “Equal.”
Too many people still feel they need to live undercover, hiding who they are or presenting a version of themselves that conforms to the current norms. We think this is egregious. At Friendship Village Tempe, we don’t live undercover. We live out loud. Under an umbrella of equality. We like to think we exemplify what life at a senior living community (and, really, life in general) should be. Hailed as one of the finest organists of his time, he will play an all-Bach recital on the wonderful neo-baroque organ of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Phoenix, on Feb. 23.

their glorious artwork on Thursday, March 6. Admission to this special event includes a tour of the museum and a pre-concert reception.

We Ain’t Ever Gonna Break Up: The Hymon & Parfunkel Musical Sept. 4 – Nov. 3, 2024
This original two-man folk musical parodies the tropes of jukebox musicals like Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Beautiful, Tina, Always…Patsy Cline, The Cher Show... and the dozen inevitable “new” bio-musicals coming soon. Saul Hymon & Bart Parfunkel star in their own musical, playing themselves, their own instruments and
the plethora of other characters they encounter on their path to superstardom-ish, resulting in a uniquely virtuosic musical farce about found family and the power of collaboration... if they don’t break up first.
Waitress
Sept. 25 – Nov. 24, 2024
Based on the book by Jessie Nelson, this musical adaptation tells the poignant story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie-maker seeking a way out of her stifling small-town life and loveless marriage. When a local baking contest presents itself as a potential pathway to a new life, Jenna seizes the chance, though her plans become tangled when she starts an affair with her gynecologist. Featuring Sara Bareilles’ songs like “She Used to Be Mine,” Waitress serves up a refreshing celebration of empowerment, friendship and motherhood.

A Live Musical Radio Show

Can the Christmas spirit prevail, vindicated by the pure faith of a child? Reviving the 1947 film through the nostalgic art of a live 1940s radio broadcast, this beloved holiday classic features original songs and timeless carols, reminding
us that the greatest gifts are found within the boundless wonder of an open heart and mind.
Seussical the Musical

This Seuss-inspired musical teaches valuable lessons about self-belief, imagination, integrity and celebrating individuality for audiences of all ages.

SCOTTSDALE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts is back with another eclectic and electrifying mix of performers for its 2024–25 season. The Center’s calendar of pop and Americana artists continues to grow with concerts by Ben Folds, Rosanne Cash, Andy Grammer, Aimee Mann, Marc Broussard and Joshua Radin. Plus, local favorites The SunPunchers will appear as an Artist in Residence over four dates between December and March. And a trio of shows by living legends — The Commodores, The Miracles and Herb Alpert & Lani Hall — will lend their legacy to the season. Speaking of legacy, the Center has a rich one in the areas of jazz, classical, Broadway, comedy and contemporary dance. This season, artists representing each of those genres, including Branford Marsalis, Jeffrey Siegel, Kelli O’Hara, Cristela Alonzo and Martha Graham Dance Company, will keep
the legacies alive while a series of December concerts, including Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder Christmas and some perennial favorites, keep the holiday traditions burning. With that respect for tradition solidly in place, the Center’s lineup also includes an increasingly popular genre with the appearance of global drag icon Sasha Velour. While many of the shows immerse audiences in the immaculate sound and clear sightlines of the Center’s intimate Virginia G. Piper Theater, some take advantage of the magical atmosphere outside in the beautiful new amphitheater spaces at Scottsdale Civic Center, including the return of popular events like the Dreamy Draw Music Festival, Arizona Concours d’Elegance and the free Sun & Sounds spring concert series.

SCOTTSDALE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (SMOCA)
SMoCA will open four new exhibitions and two immersive installations in Fall 2024. Exploding Native Inevitable includes contemporary visual art, accompanied by a program of dance, film, music, performance, readings, storytelling and video by Indigenous artists from a land now called America. Situated on the cusp of another pivotal election, poetics of dissonance presents works from the SMoCA collection that navigate the tumultuous landscape of socio-political discourse. Brains and Beauty: At the Intersection of Art and Neuroscience is a visual exploration of a rapidly expanding field of research that combines neuroscience and psychology to study the neural processes of aesthetic experience. And Cybele Lyle: Floating Seeds Make Deep Forms is a site-specific installation that responds to deserts in the North American Southwest as non-places — liminal expanses for ambiguity within a regenerative ecosystem. All four exhibitions will open in August and continue into 2025.
Additionally, Phoenix-based artist Shomit Barua will bring two installation works to SMoCA in time for the Fall Opening Celebration on Sept. 20. In the Museum’s new space (blank space) area, Barua’s Entrainment 718 will explore spatial and temporal perception through video and sound techniques that recreate the hypnotic and transcendent states that occur on trains. Meanwhile, Barua’s sound installation Hyperwilding can be heard outside in the Nancy and Art Schwalm Sculpture Courtyard. Additional exhibitions will open in Spring 2025, including transfeminisms , a major survey touring show that brings to light a multiplicity of urgent, pressing and ongoing issues faced by women and queer and trans people across the globe. Beyond the exhibitions, the Museum has a series of events planned throughout the year, including the return of popular favorites like Mystery in the Museum and the Glow Up @SMoCA series.

CANAL CONVERGENCE
Canal Convergence, Scottsdale Arts’ biggest event, will return Nov. 8–17 as it celebrates the 2024 theme, “Reflections.” This free, 10-night, light-based public art event is held every year along the Arizona Canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront. It features a variety of family-friendly activities, including live music and dance performances, educational workshops, interactive artworks and more. The primary draw, however, is a variety of large-scale, light-based public artworks from international, national and Arizona-based artists, all surrounding (or, in some cases, floating over) the Arizona Canal. Many of the artworks also offer interactive elements in an accessible space for the whole family to enjoy. For those looking for a night out, there will be a beer and wine garden at the music stage, and the first weekend of the event will feature the return of the One Water Brewing Showcase, using ultra-purified water from Scottsdale’s Advanced Water Treatment Plant. Returning for its second year, the Canal Convergence
Mini Film Festival , which debuted in 2023, will screen short films that explore the concept of physical and psychological reflections and address Canal Convergence’s annual themes. With Canal Convergence taking place days after Election Day, it will be a poignant time to pause, contemplate and engage with the artworks, fostering introspection, dialogue and unity in the midst of a changing world. That doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of excitement. In addition to glittering lights and electrifying performances, The Valley’s own Walter Productions will return with a new variation on its ever-popular choreographed fire show.

JOURNEYS OF Discovery
Southwest Shakespeare Company (SSC) enters its fourth decade with a season entitled “Journeys of Discovery.” Like the audience embarking on remarkable voyages into fantastic stories, the characters on stage this year must discover themselves anew even as they travel the world. Outward journeys provide inner illumination, especially in the way people treat one another.
The 2024-2025 season offers Shakespearian classics and original adaptations with performances at the Mesa Arts Center (MAC) and the intimate Music Pavilion at Taliesin West. SSC’s classics at the MAC this year include the fanciful and much-beloved comedy of Twelfth Night , as well as a special one-weekend run of A Christmas Carol for Two Actors, and the world’s most famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet . At Taliesin West, comedy is profoundly moving with The Merchant of Venice, and the magic of the desert location itself is the setting for The Secret Garden.
Shakespeare’s hilarious Twelfth Night finds young Viola shipwrecked on the shore of a mysterious and foreign country called Illyria. There, love seems to direct all the inhabitants to the wrong object of their affections until
Viola’s arrival upends the social order. (Oct. 12-27.) In November, audiences will enjoy a new adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel, originally born right here in the valley in front of a crackling fireplace. All the characters in Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey of redemption are portrayed by remarkable performers in A Christmas Carol for Two Actors. (Nov. 22-24.)
In February, Southwest Shakespeare sets the world's most tragic love story in one of history's greatest divides, bringing Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to new life in Gujarat, India, during the time of partition. (Feb. 8-23.)
In Spring, Southwest Shakespeare returns to historic and magical Taliesin West, with The Merchant of Venice, directed by Beau Heckman, and James Cougar Canfield’s fresh adaptation of a treasured family classic, The Secret Garden.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN BLOOMS BRIGHTER with New Experiences in the Fall
Desert
Botanical Garden will transform into a dreamscape this fall filled with largescale shimmering sculptures throughout the trails, the warm glow of Las Noches de las Luminarias during the holidays and the return of several events.
Fall tickets are now available at dbg.org.
Ticketed events go on sale Sept. 3. For Las Noches de las Luminarias, Garden members can purchase tickets Oct. 4, and general public tickets go on sale Oct. 18. All exhibits and some events are included with general admission.
The Garden kicks off the season with The Leaf Connection. Created by artist Mary Meyer, the exhibit features an intricate display of more than 1,000 ceramic leaves pinned to a map of metro Phoenix that showcases the city’s rich plant diversity. Meyer draws inspiration
from observations recorded on iNaturalist, an established online platform where residents share information on biodiversity. During the course of the exhibit, she will add new leaves as more observations are documented. The exhibit is a captivating opportunity for guests to connect with nature while inspiring art.
Families will then take flight the following month with the opening of Majestic Mariposas Guests of all ages will be dazzled by thousands of butterflies, bright blooms and will learn about the pollinator’s transformation, as well as the Garden’s conservation efforts. The exhibit will open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 21 through Nov. 11.
Starting Oct. 12, LIGHT BLOOM will turn the Garden into a daydream with dozens of lustrous geometric sculptures. The exhibit opens with
14 artwork installations, 33 light sculptures and one monumental, immersive installation. Artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk of HYBYCOZO create artwork that features grand geometric sculptures that blend mathematics, science and natural phenomena to create patterns and textures. These illuminated sculptures will cast intricate shadows and vibrant hues over the desert landscape.
“We are thrilled to invite guests to experience an enchanting confluence of illumination and geometric designs with the debut of LIGHT BLOOM. It is among several exhibitions set to enhance the overall visitor experience at the Garden this season for guests of all ages,” says Garden Executive Director Ken Schutz.
That’s not all. The colorful Guelaguetza event returns in the evening Oct. 5-6. Guests can immerse themselves in this cultural experience that celebrates the various indigenous communities of Oaxaca, Mexico. The event includes a procession that guests can partake in live music and a variety of dances opening with the beloved Chinas Oaxaquenas. Variety of art will be for sale, as well as traditional Oaxaqueno food. Visitors will gain a newfound appreciation for this Oaxacan celebration.
From Oct. 17-20, guests can explore 30,000 desert-adapted plants at the Fall Plant Sale. Shoppers can find a variety of desert plants, succulents and cactus to turn their garden or green space into a dreamy landscape. As guests walk through this picturesque outdoor shopping experience, Garden experts will be available to answer any questions and offer advice as well. The event is free; however, guests must make a reservation online.
In addition, several fall-favorites are returning, including Music in the Garden, Lotería Nights and a number of exciting adult education classes. For children and families, Cactus Clubhouse reopens Oct. 3 and is a wonderful experience to connect with nature through hands-on activities, nature play and pop-up experiences. And for the book lovers, the Garden is excited to continue its Read Between the Spines Author Series on Oct. 10.
The Garden will dazzle with its Día de Muertos celebration.
Starting Nov. 1, guests can visit the community altar that pays tribute to the legend of the Cempasúchil marigold flower and the story of Xóchitl and Huitzilin in Ottosen Gallery.
It is believed the scent of the Cempasúchil flower guides departed souls to the offerings prepared for them.
The romantic tale of Xóchitl and Huitzilin unfolds in this exhibit through dramatic visuals, including monumental flower sculptures and handcrafted silver hummingbirds made by artisans from Taxco de Alarcón. The altar will also feature the ceramic artwork of Oaxacan artist Rufina Ruiz Lopez. Visitors are invited to place memories and wishes for loved ones on the ofrenda.
On Nov. 2-3, the Día de Muertos celebration will offer guests a dancing procession, rich food and activities for the entire family to enjoy.
The Garden is celebrating Arizona’s indigenous communities in November with a weeks-long celebration that culminates with a weekend festival. Guests can learn about Arizona’s diverse indigenous communities at various discovery stations. On the weekend, visitors can experience art, storytelling, music, dance and culture. Artisans from local tribes will offer demonstrations in basket weaving, pottery, etching and more. Some vendors will sell their products as well.
The Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Week-long Celebration is Nov. 11-17, and the festival is Nov. 16-17.
During the holidays, the Garden’s trails will glisten like never before with the union of Las Noches de las Luminarias and LIGHT BLOOM. For select
nights, the end of November through December, guests can experience a Garden tradition unique to the Southwest that features 8,000 hand-lit luminarias, thousands of twinkling lights, hot chocolate and several musical performances.

THE MIM MUSIC THEATER’S FALL 2024 CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS
Exciting Artists from Around the World
The MIM Music Theater’s Fall Concert Series is currently underway and runs through December. Its lineup of more than 50 concerts spans a variety of genres — including jazz, blues, rock, pop, bluegrass, folk, soul and
funk — and celebrates musical traditions from around the world.
As a part of Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), the MIM Music Theater is designed for unparalleled acoustic quality and comfort. The theater offers exceptional experiences for audiences and performers alike and has earned a reputation as one of the world’s finest music venues. GRAMMY-winner Shawn Colvin calls it “the best 300-seat theater in the country.”
“The MIM Music Theater is intimate and acoustically superb — a tremendous venue in which to enjoy live music,” says Andrew Walesch, artistic director of the MIM Music Theater. “MIM is proud to provide a superlative stage for musicians and a relaxing atmosphere for our guests.”
Audience enjoyment is a priority at the MIM Music Theater, and the venue was thoughtfully
constructed to provide a phenomenal guest experience. In addition to incredible sound quality, the theater provides spacious, staggered seats that ensure a clear view of the stage from anywhere in the auditorium. A refreshment hour precedes each evening performance and offers craft cocktails, local beers, wines and various nonalcoholic drinks, along with appetizing treats made in MIM’s café kitchen.
Highlights of the Fall 2024 Concert Series include ’80s pop icon Debbie Gibson, whose performance celebrates the 35th anniversary of her double-platinum album Electric Youth. GRAMMY-winning jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and GRAMMY-nominated Black female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock make highly anticipated returns to the theater, and GRAMMY-winning folk icon Judy Collins performs a holiday concert on Nov. 21 and 22.
The Fall 2024 Concert Series also features exciting debut performances at the theater. Celebrated R&B singer Will Downing, Rick Wakeman of the progressive rock band Yes and acclaimed jazz ensemble the Jon Cowherd Trio make their first appearances at the venue this season. GRAMMY-winning producer, songwriter and guitarist T Bone Burnett brings his inimitable brand of Americana to MIM on Nov. 9 and 10, and 10-time GRAMMY nominee John Hiatt performs a three-night run of shows on Nov. 15, 16 and 17.
Returning favorites include Hot Tuna, which features Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane; GRAMMY-nominated funk, soul and Afro-Cuban musician Cimafunk ; GRAMMY-nominated cabaret icon Marilyn Maye; and soul music legend Booker T. Jones.
The series also presents a selection of festive holiday concerts. Seasonal highlights include Mark O’Connor’s An Appalachian Christmas, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s Salsa Navidad, Irish Christmas in America and the Klezmatics’ Happy Joyous Hanukkah
“MIM is pleased to present another outstanding lineup of exciting performers,” Walesch says. “From international superstars to critically acclaimed gems across a wide variety of genres, each artist who performs at the MIM
Music Theater this season will deliver an unforgettable experience for our guests.”
For people who support the arts and regularly attend shows, MIM offers memberships that include exclusive benefits for concertgoers. Circle of Friends memberships, starting at $250, include presale access to concerts and invitations to concert series preview events with MIM’s artistic director. Members who give $500 or more annually also enjoy 10% off concert tickets.
Additional artists will be added throughout the season. For tickets and the complete lineup, visit MIM.org
ART AS ILLUSION and Urgent Message
During the 2024–25 season at PhxArt, discover art that confounds the senses, sheds light on urgent topics and captures moments that endure through the ages.
This season at Phoenix Art Museum, experience luminous, iridescent glass works, intimate photographic portraits and works by various artists who explore the effects and consequences of global climate change.
Through Jan. 5, discover the artistic achievements of Larry Bell, a titan of the 1960s Light and Space movement. Bell’s glass cubes, sculptures, large-scale standing walls and mixed-media collages each contain individual worlds of light, space and illusion.
Beginning Oct. 30, explore Charles Gaines’ vital contributions to the field of conceptual art in two major exhibitions: Charles Gaines: 1992–2023 and Charles Gaines: Numbers and Trees (Arizona Series). Numbers and Trees (Arizona Series), in particular, draws inspiration from the desert landscape, depicting cottonwood trees and shedding light on the precarious nature of the waterways that nourish the resilient species.
In December, Richard Avedon: Among Creatives highlights the work of American photographer Richard Avedon (1923-2004), showcasing prints from his early and late
fashion photographs to expressive portraits of fellow creatives such as Marilyn Monroe, Paul McCartney, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol and Nastassja Kinski. Later, experience Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology and the Contemporary Landscape, opening Feb. 12, 2025. The photography exhibition examines environmental history and degradation, particularly in the American landscape.
Larry Bell: Improvisations (On view through Jan. 5, 2025) Charles Gaines: 1992–2023 (Oct. 30, 2024 – March 9, 2025). Charles Gaines: Numbers and Trees (Arizona Series) (Oct. 30, 2024 – July 20, 2025). Richard Avedon: Among Creatives (Dec. 6, 2024 – May 25, 2025) Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology and the Contemporary Landscape (Feb. 26, 2025 – June 15, 2025) Special exhibitions are free for Museum Members and included with general admission.
