WELCOME SEASON SPONSOR

ONEAZ CREDIT UNION began over 67 years ago when a handful of people saw the need for a memberowned financial institution benefiting Arizonans. Instead of aiming to make money for stockholders, OneAZ put people over profits from day one, returning our earnings to members in the form of competitive products, better rates and lower fees. Though we’ve grown exponentially over the decades, our mission, vision and values remain the same. OneAZ is member-centric, associate-focused and committed to improving the communities we serve. We do this in large part by supporting Arizona nonprofits through our Community Impact Grants, including arts-focused organizations like the Prescott Center for the Arts, Free Arts of Arizona, Music2Live and Arts for All.

David E. Doss President & CEO OneAZ Credit Union

Participating in the arts expands our understanding of the world and set us up for success. At OneAZ Credit Union we believe that when our community succeeds, we all succeed. We are proud to be strong supporters of the arts and the communities we are part of. Thank you,

Students from Brunson-Lee Elementary in the Balsz School District helped celebrate Act One’s 200,000th student on an arts field trip in May 2019.

ACT ONE: BECAUSE EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE ARTS How exciting was going to your first play, museum, ballet, or concert as a child? Remember the magic when you experienced the wonders of art at such a young age? Now imagine being able to gift that feeling to thousands of children who may never have the opportunity to get involved in the arts. In Arizona, schools increasingly do not have funds for field trips. This is especially the case for Title 1 schools in lower-income communities. A charitable organization founded in 2011, Act One provides school children from low-income families the opportunity to experience arts performances and exhibitions through field trips to professional theaters and museums. During the 2019-2020 school year, Act One has the capacity to bring more than 50,000 6

K-12 students on educational arts field trips in Phoenix and Tucson. Act One partners with more than 50 arts organizations to bring students on field trips. Because Act One pays for both the tickets and the busing, students who previously didn’t attend field trips are able to experience the arts. Among the 43,249 students and chaperones who attended field trips with Act One last school year were 103 3rd graders from Frank Elementary School in Tempe, who explored the galleries at the Heard Museum. “This was a first-time experience for some of my students; I literally had tears as they told me,” said Julianna Martinez, a 3rd grade

teacher from the school, where 99 percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunches. “The docents were knowledgeable and kept the students engaged throughout the tour and answered every student’s question. Everyone wanted to stay longer. The scenery and building are views that our students never see or get time to enjoy.”

CULTURE PASS: ARTS FOR ALL

GIVE CHILDREN THE ARTS

In addition to its field trip program, Act One manages the Act One Culture Pass, which provides opportunities for more than 500,000 people to attend arts and cultural destinations and performances for free. Culture Passes are available at 51 Valley Public Libraries and can be checked out by library card holders. Visit act1az.org/culturepass for more information.

Thanks to generous donors, Act One has brought more than 200,000 students and chaperones on arts field trips in the past eight years. This year, 50,000+ students can experience the arts on Act One field trips. For as little as $10, you can sponsor one child on an arts field trip. ARIZONA OPERA: INTIMATE STORIES NEAR AND FAR

ARIZONA OPERA

Fellow Travelers. Photo by Philip Groshong

Combining provocative and intriguing tales with lush music and excellent performers, Arizona Opera’s 2019-2020 performances span the globe in setting and vocal talent. The curtain rises on Shining Brow, part of the McDougall Arizona Opera RED Series (September 27-29 at Phoenix’s Herberger Theater; October 5-6 at Tucson’s Temple of Music and Art). It’s focused on Frank Lloyd Wright’s life between 1903-1914, including pivotal points in his relationships with his wife and his mistress, culminating in the devastating multiple murder and fire which destroyed Taliesin and ended Wright’s Prairie School period.“In many ways, this opera is about how Wright the architect became

Wright the icon,” explains director Chas Rader-Shieber. Composer Daron Hagen’s works span wide; The Phoenix Symphony premiered his fifth symphony in 2015. “I always assume there are people in the audience who are smarter than me, people who get my jokes, and people who are simply there because their husbands made them come,” says Hagen. “All three…should be entertained.” Next in the McDougall RED Series comes Fellow Travelers (November 8-10 in Phoenix; November 16-17 in Tucson), written by librettist Greg Pierce with music by Gregory Spears. The opera tells the story of an ill-fated romance during the heyday of ON STAGE 2019–2020 |

Senator Joseph McCarthy, who relentlessly purged the State Department of “subversive” elements including homosexuality and communism. Spears’s music is unique — “nothing that I’ve ever quite heard before,” says baritone Joseph Lattanzi, who sings the role of Hawkins Fuller. “It blends a lot of different styles that we are familiar with: minimalism; 14th-century troubadour influence; lyricism... this is a very tonal piece.” He continues, “You get to the end and you feel like you’ve been taken on this emotional roller coaster...it almost sweeps you away.” Grand opera returns with the Main Stage Series with Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème (January 24-26 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix; February 1-2 at Tucson Music Hall), beloved for its struggling artists and entirely hummable melodies. This masterpiece served as direct inspiration for the hit musical Rent, which features themes from Puccini’s opera.

The Marion Roose Pullin Opera Studio alumni figure prominently in every production, and all of the Studio’s current singers will perform in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss (April 3-5 in Phoenix; April 11-12 in Tucson). “It’s such a quirky piece,” says Christopher Cano, Arizona Opera’s Head of Music and Studio Director. “It’s a real opera-lover’s opera – the last 20 minutes are some of the most sublime music ever penned.”

Brace for the stampede when Riders of the Purple Sage returns (February 28-March 1 in Phoenix; March 7-8 in Tucson), just three years after its triumphant world premiere.

Part of the Marlu Allan and Scott Stallard Modern Masterwork Series, it’s highlighted by Ed Mell’s glorious artwork, a state-of-theart LED video wall and a ranch house based on still-standing Winsor Castle at Pipe Spring National Monument. “We want to feel the passing of time...the expansive nature of the sage, the open desert,” says Stage Director Fenlon Lamb.

GREAT THEATER STARTS IN ARIZONA

ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY

Arizona Theatre Company (ATC), the official State Theatre of Arizona, is gearing up for “curtain up” on a spectacular 53rd season that will celebrate the individual in all its forms through a richly creative tapestry of genre, artistry, and diversity. The new season, under the theme “The Curtain Rises,” continues ATC’s commitment to bring to Arizona world-quality productions that illustrate the gloriously wide-ranging forms of storytelling in our theaters that are surprising, awe-inspiring, and exciting. Experience the finest theater created in Arizona for Arizona! New Artistic Director Sean Daniels sees this season as not only an exciting new chapter in ATC's history, but also Arizona's. "I’m ready to start saying that great theater in our country starts in Arizona. That plays go from here, then to New York or to the rest of the country. I want audiences to feel that everything we put on stage is world-class and is exactly what you would experience at the best theater anywhere else in the country – but it’s in your city and it is built here for you.” There are many ways to experience ATC. One of the best ways is by becoming part of the ATC family with a season package. The 6-Play subscription offers the best seats at a significant savings. For a bit of flexibility, there are 5-, 4-, 3-Play or FLEX packages available. ON STAGE 2019–2020 |

ATC’s 53rd season offers these six compelling productions: The Royale A power-packed boxing drama The Royale is not your usual sports play. First of all, it is not really about life in the ring. Second, not a single punch will be thrown, at least not with fists. Set in 1910, deep in the midst of Jim Crow, the story is loosely based on the life of Jack Johnson, the world’s first African-American heavyweight boxing champion. The play explores one man’s struggle while reflecting a much broader one. It is also a play about a brother and his sister - his sister, who as he climbs for glory and respect, remains his greatest adversary and strongest motivation. “Original and graceful. The Royale packs a punch!" – The New York Times

Silent Sky A celebration of discovery, originality and curiosity Based on the true story of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, astonishing discoveries await in this exquisite blend of science, history, family ties and fragile love. A passionate young woman must map her own passage through a society determined to keep a woman in her place. “Bottom line: Heavenly.” – Atlanta JournalConstitution Cabaret Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! A powerful musical love story centered on Sally Bowles, a talented cabaret performer at Berlin’s Kit Kat Club and Cliff Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration. Set in the 1930s Berlin during the Nazi regime’s rise to take over the German government, Cabaret is a big award-winning musical critique of apathy, and a chilling look at totalitarianism. “…a masterpiece of musical theatre…” – Chicago Tribune

ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY

“Master Harold”…and the Boys The semi-autobiographical masterwork "Master Harold"…and the Boys takes place in South Africa during the early years of apartheid. A stunning masterpiece, one of the most powerful coming-of-age plays ever written, and still timely, still compelling, still profoundly moving. "…a blistering fusion of the personal and the political." – The New York Times The Legend of Georgia McBride A big-hearted, FIERCE music-filled comedy Casey is a broke Elvis impersonator with a baby on the way. When the owner of the run-down bar where he works brings in a drag show to attract more customers, Casey is out of a job. Or is he? Filled with music, humor, and plenty of sequins, this joyful, acclaimed new play is a reminder that the path to prosperity and fulfillment may sometimes take an unexpected turn. Don’t miss this hilarious and heartwarming show taking the nation by storm. “Stitch-in-your-side funny! Full of sass and good spirits." – The New York Times Women in Jeopardy A riotous comedy Middle-aged mom Liz has a new man. And let’s face it—he’s just plain creepy. When a mysterious disappearance sets the community on edge, Liz's best friends leap to the rescue. This is a hilarious comedy about trading in wine glasses for spyglasses when the mid-life crisis just isn’t your speed. “The laughs in Wendy MacLeod’s play come fast and furious...a new work that’s modern, lively, and loads of fun.” – Boston Globe

JULIE TAYMOR TALKS ABOUT THE LION KING The Director of Disney's The Lion King talks about how the beloved film came to life as a musical theater phenomenon.

JULIE TAYMOR ON THE CHALLENGES OF TRANSLATING THE FILM TO THE STAGE:

"To maintain the integrity of my own style, while incorporating it into one of the most beloved stories in recent history, was the first challenge to contemplate. With preconceptions about what the characters should look and sound like, would the audience accept variations on a theme? Additionally, many of The Lion King's scenes are seemingly impossible to transfer to the stage. The wildebeest stampede, the elephant graveyard and its hundred hyenas. They are all inherently cinematic scenes. I relished the chance to stage them theatrically."

ON HOW THE STAGE VERSION OF THE LION KING DIFFERS FROM THE FILM VERSION:

"The limited 75-minute running time of the film just didn't allow time for Simba to truly take the journey, both inner and outer, that would lead him full circle to his place as king. The two-act stage format provided ample time to deepen and strengthen Simba and show the arduous path that leads to his self-discovery. His story needed more detail, depth and conflict."

ON STAGE 2019–2020 |

35

ON THEATER'S UNIQUE ADVANTAGE TO OTHER MEDIUMS: "I had decided early on that I would not do a realistic rendition of the Pridelands. I wanted audiences to be released from their memories of the film right from the start. I wanted them to take a leap of faith and imagination. Stage mechanics would be visible. Showing the mechanics, revealing the rods, ropes and wires that make it all happen, is something that the theater can do that the film and television cannot. They are literal mediums where the spectator is asked to believe in the reality of the image while the theater functions best as a poetic medium. The audience, given a hint or suggestion of an idea, is ready to fill in the lines, to take it the rest of the way. Magic can exist in blatantly showing how theater is created rather than hiding the 'how.' "

ON THE MARRIAGE OF THE HUMAN ACTORS WITH THEIR ANIMAL COUNTERPARTS:

"One of the most powerful elements of the film is the rich humanity of the animal characters. In considering this ironic duality of the human and the animal it became critical in the design concept not to hide the actor behind a whole mask or inside an animal body suit. I wanted the human being to be an essential part of stylization. I wanted the audience to marvel at what a human being can do through true technical prowess."

ON HOW ACTORS ARE SELECTED FOR THE ROLES IN THE LION KING:

"I brought puppets to auditions to see how performers would look in relation to specific puppets and how they would respond

ASU GAMMAGE

when asked to animate an inanimate object. Attitude is a very important part of my casting decision. I want an actor who is going to enjoy the challenge and not view it as a burden. Rather than expressly hiring puppeteers, I look for inventive actors who move well. A strong actor gives an idiosyncratic performance because he infuses the puppet character with his own personality instead of relying on generic puppetry technique. The thrill of working with a good actor who is new to this medium, and who loves the puppet he is working with, is that he will take the form further than I ever imagined."

ON HOW THE ACTORS APPROACHED THEIR ANIMAL ROLES:

"Each actor had to find the duality of the animal and the human within their performance. An actress cannot put on Nala's mask and costume and talk with

Simba as though she had just run into him on the street. As lioness/young human she has to find a way of standing, walking and gesturing that fulfills the demands of the production's conceit."

ON SEEING THE PUPPETS COME TO LIFE:

"When a figure made of wood and fabric moves like a living thing, the visual and emotional impact is magical. One can either focus solely on the puppet or enjoy the direct and transparent art of the actor motivating the puppet. At rest, a puppet is just a facsimile of a human being or an animal. But when Zazu's wings flutter excitedly or Timon cocks his head at a quizzical angle, the pleasure of watching that facsimile turn into a being with recognizable emotions is the pinnacle of this type of theater experience." BALLET ARIZONA’S 2019-2020 SEASON CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF CREATIVE MILESTONES

As Arizona’s only professional ballet company approaches its 2019-2020 season, Ballet Arizona promises to deliver a season not to be missed. The season will honor internationally-recognized Artistic Director Ib Andersen’s career as he marks his 20th year with the ballet company, celebrating his beginnings, his masterpieces and vision for the future of Ballet Arizona.

Ballet Arizona will kick off its 34th season with a dance program designed to move you – Director’s Choice, which will feature three distinctly different ballets: Les Patineurs (The Skaters) by the legendary choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton, a Latin-inspired world premiere by Ballet Arizona Dancer Nayon Iovino, and a sentimental reflection of Ib Andersen’s 20 years with Ballet Arizona.

“When I reflect on my 20 years at Ballet Arizona, I must say only one word comes to mind: creativity,” said Andersen, “You cannot do what we have done without creativity. It represents to me the evolution of ballet – where we have been, where we are, and where we must go. I also cannot believe that 20 years has come and gone. I feel like Ballet Arizona has only scratched the surface and we have so much more to do and give to our community. That is what this season is all about.”

This October 24-27, be transported to blue Italian shores of Italy with Napoli, a festive and uplifting story of Gennaro, a poor fisherman, and his beloved Teresina. Teresina is washed away in a great storm, only to be rescued by sea nymphs ruled by an evil sea spirit. The couple’s love must overcome trials and temptations so that light prevails over darkness in the best tradition of Romanticism.

dazzling production created by Andersen as Arizona’s own sparkles from start to finish. In December, more than 150 dancers will come together on the stage of Symphony Hall to bring the enchantment and splendor of The Nutcracker to life. In February, the company presents the Shakespearean classic, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The hilarious masterpiece of dream, illusion, love and fantasy unfolds with lavish new sets (created by designer Michael Korsch) and 81 brand new costumes (created by designer Fabio Toblini). In May 2020, the All Balanchine program presents three ballets by the legendary choreographer George Balanchine and staged by Andersen, who is one of a handful of artists worldwide authorized by The Balanchine Trust to stage the late choreographer’s masterpieces. The 2020 lineup includes performances of Slaughter

on Tenth Avenue, the Arizona premiere of Bourrée Fantasque, and the breathtaking Serenade. Ballet Arizona’s annual tradition An Evening at Desert Botanical Garden will finish out the 2019-2020 season in May and June. Staged in the Schilling Event Plaza, this production will be a world premiere by Andersen surrounded by the beautiful backdrop of the garden landscapes, and the sunset against the Papago Buttes. The Phoenix Symphony will join Ballet Arizona for three productions, Napoli, The Nutcracker and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, enriching the experience with live music.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE

31DERFUL YEARS OF MAGIC! This season marks Valley Youth Theatre’s (VYT) 31st season of showcasing the magnificent talents of youth from throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area! Since its inception in 1989, VYT has become a world-class theater company, and one of the most well-respected youth theaters in the country. Known equally for alumni who have successfully charted careers on Broadway — and beyond — and those who have become business and community leaders, VYT prides itself on nurturing children in the areas of teamwork, cooperation and respect. Producing Artistic Director Bobb Cooper joined VYT in 1996 and is lauded for the passion and professionalism he instills throughout the company. He and the theater have been recognized with a myriad of

Tuck Everlasting, The Musical

awards and unparalleled reviews of their productions. VYT is also acclaimed for the many contributions they make to the local community. Sponsor-a-Seat has allowed more than 25,000 at-risk children to attend live theater, many for the first time. Literacy and the Arts raises reading and vocabulary comprehension for thousands of students attending Title 1 schools, each year. Terminally and chronically ill HopeKids and their families are VYT’s guests for the final dress rehearsal of every production, and special Military Nights are often offered for families of active and retired members of the armed forces. Cooper chose this season’s lineup for its fun, family-friendly appeal, inspiring lessons and timeless themes. ON STAGE 2019–2020 | 69

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE VYT is the first theater company in Arizona to produce Matilda The Musical. Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, this Tony Award®-winning musical is the captivating masterpiece that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. Audiences will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination. They Chose Me, is a musical spotlighting the subject of adoption and foster care as seen through the eyes and voices of children ages 7 to 18. The show encompasses a variety of issues typically experienced by adopted children, among them are: foster homes, parental loss, gay adoption and multicultural families. A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail, is the holiday classic celebrating 24 years that VYT has presented the show in the Valley. This Phoenix family tradition is a musical adventure filled with sharing, caring, friendship and joy. The Princess and the Pea is the familiar and beloved tale, told with gentle humor. Feisty Princess Astrid finds herself as a prospective bride for the bookish Prince Eric. Although she has no interest in either marriage or

princes, she spiritedly takes a series of tests to prove that she is "a real princess." Dear Edwina is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up, from the creators of Junie B. Jones The Musical. The show's heroine is an advice-giver extraordinaire, like a spunky, singing version of Dear Abby. Peter Pan is one of the most beloved family favorites of all time. This high-flying Tony Award®-winning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years. Peter Pan is the perfect show for the child in all of us — who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up. Bobb Cooper reflected, “I’m very proud to say that we continue to thrive in the Phoenix arts community, and that every season is better than the last, thanks to our incredible donors, Board of Directors, staff, students, campers, casts, crews, parents, volunteers and business partners. Together, we inspire young people to be the best they can be.”

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN

WILDLY UNEXPECTED By Clare Hahne

For a visitor who has never seen the Sonoran Desert, a visit to Desert Botanical Garden may be wildly unexpected. A stroll on the trails exposes them to purple prickly pears, layers of verdant trees, a kaleidoscope of cactus blossoms and watercolor sunsets. The wildly unexpected continues with the Garden’s upcoming exhibition, which is connecting visitors to environmental issues around the world through the messages delivered by colorful creatures. This fall, the Garden is presenting Wild Rising—an installation traveling straight from Milan with more than 1,000 animal sculptures made from colorful and recyclable plastic. Visitors of all ages will be drawn to engage with these vibrant creatures and to discover that plastic does not have to end up in landfills, but it can be reinvented into something eye-catching and thoughtprovoking.

Wild Rising

Fall Beauty

This is the first exhibition in the Southwest for Cracking Art—an artist collective that specializes in large-scale plastic animal sculptures. Each creature features bright, artificial colors to create a contrast within nature to messages about key environmental issues. “We wanted to talk about regeneration, collaboration, the observing spirit and the preservation of the landscape,” says Kicco, Cracking Art creative. “We abandoned the sense of alarm to communicate our message in a positive way, transmitting in the first place joy and amazement, then bringing
