OCTOBER 2013 COHORT! YEARBOOK
Our New Fellows
On Purpose is about change. We believe that business can be a driving force for social and environmental good, and that the next generation
of leaders must be able to speak the language of both the commercial and social sectors to help tackle the most pressing problems of the future.
!
On Purpose is a one-year leadership development programme for professionals wanting to transition into social enterprise.
We challenge our Associates to become the next generation of social enterprise leaders. Each of our Associates works in two innovative, socially or environmentally motivated organisations and takes part in personal and professional development through weekly training, mentoring and coaching with industry leaders. We provide our Associates with the space to learn, develop, experiment, and above all, to change.!
!
I am proud to introduce our October 2013 cohort, who completed their programme and became Fellows in September 2014. I have greatly enjoyed our time together, and know that the end of their time at On Purpose marks the beginning of the achievements and the impact they will go on to have in the social enterprise space.!
!
If you would like to get in touch with any of the Associates included here, please feel free to contact them directly.

The Programme
The On Purpose programme combines two six-month paid placements in innovative
purpose-driven organisations with world class training, mentoring and coaching from industry leaders.
PRESTIGIOUS WORK PLACEMENTS!
MENTORING!
On Purpose Associates are placed in organisations that are using commercial models to create social or environmental good. Typically reporting directly to senior management, Associates take responsibility for workstreams that are significant to the success of the organisation, while simultaneously benefitting from learning first-hand from organisations that are at the forefront of the social enterprise space.!
Each Associate engages in fortnightly
one-to-one mentoring from top-flight professionals. Often drawn from the world’s most renowned strategy consulting firms, the mentors provide an independent voice to support and challenge the Associates in the work they undertake in their placements.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING!
EXECUTIVE COACHING!
Associates participate in over 200 hours of training over the course of the programme, covering commercial skills, social sector knowledge, professional skills and personal development. Our trainers are leaders in their respective fields, who stretch the minds of the Associates and build their professional capabilities and personal impact.!
During the programme, mentoring is complemented with quarterly executive coaching. This gives the Associates an invaluable opportunity to step back and consider how they can have the most impact as leaders, and to focus on what it will take for them to achieve their longer term career ambitions.
5
6
Training Overview
The training programme not only equips Associates with a wide range of knowledge and skills, it is also a valuable opportunity for them to network with movers-and-shakers in and around the social enterprise space.
!
The curriculum is designed to provide Associates with a platform that enables them to get up to speed with the range of areas identified as necessary to be effective in the social enterprise space. They also develop the ability to “ask the right questions” and, importantly, know where to go to find out more by virtue of building a powerful network.!
!
A typical Friday afternoon allows the Associates to benefit from both an external trainer, leading a session on their particular area of expertise, and internal peer-led learning. The topics covered fall into four themes, described on the following page.

Meet the Cohort We came together from a diverse set of backgrounds driven by the desire to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who seek to understand and hopefully tackle some of the many social issues facing the world today.
!
Over the past year we have become part of the On Purpose community — a community that welcomed us, shared new ideas (and reaffirmed many existing ones), provided the tools and exposure required to think more holistically, and encouraged us to approach social problems in more innovative and unorthodox ways. We hope that we can continue to provide similar support for the many cohorts to come!!
!
Each and every one of us has grown in ways we could never have imagined, and we have actively supported each other throughout our On Purpose journeys. We have developed personally and professionally through the myriad of opportunities presented — in training, coaching and mentoring sessions, at events, via networking meetings, and in our work placements. We have had the support of an amazing group of mentors, coaches and trainers who shared their experiences and passions, and who were extremely adept at guiding us through our personal experiences. We are extremely grateful to everyone who gave up their time to support us along the way.!
!
We now look towards the future with eagerness and a sense of opportunity. There are millions of ways to have a positive impact in the world, and although we will each take our own paths, we look forward to connecting in the future to share what we have learned. We hope that you enjoy reading our profiles. Please get in touch with us if you have comments, ideas or simply wish to have a chat!

I love all things technology, innovation and finding creative solutions in business. My view is that the next phase of innovation is placing social and environmental values at the core of any business model. I am looking for entrepreneurial challenges, particularly where impact and technology cross over. During my year with On Purpose, I also had the opportunity to explore my passion in the arts through my Shakespeare Schools Festival placement and have as a result joined the board of Sound and Music, the national agency for contemporary music. I also developed the TourBox project with other On Purpose Associates, which was the runner-up in the NESTA Rethinking Parks initiative.

uk.linkedin.com/in/ivanirina @immunitty I am a strong believer in the idea that skills are transferable. I believe that personal empowerment and helping people to find their own ‘lightbulb moment’ is at the heart of social change. If individuals are equipped with the tools and resources to be the best they can be, then collectively we can empower everyone to take responsibility for building a better society. Youth development is at the core of my social purpose. NCS has shown me that by inspiring and energising a generation of young people, we can have a huge impact on society at large. I am also launching LifeUp, an e-learning mindfulness programme to help individuals build mental resilience and well-being.

Highlights from the Year
our support
These are some of the moments that defined our On Purpose experience – those that inspired us, those that made us proud and those that made us smile.
FRIENDS FOR LIFE
ON PURPOSE NETWORK! We are extremely privileged and proud to be supported by an ever-expanding On Purpose network of past and future Fellows and Associates, placement hosts and other partners.
OUR COHORT! “On Purpose gave me above all the chance to meet a truly amazing and inspiring group of people. People who challenged me, motivated me, and above all, made me feel welcome in a new city.” INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE! On Purpose provides the opportunity to meet many inspirational people through training sessions, networking events and work placements. One Associate met Malala Yousafzai, who despite being shot by the Taliban at 15, continues to campaign for the right of girls to be educated. There are ongoing opportunities to build a network of contacts with those who shape the social enterprise sector and beyond. They will leave you inspired to join the drive towards a world where the CSR department is obsolete, and all business operates with a social and environmental conscience. 29
CREATING OUR OWN IDEAS
FINDING PURPOSE
RETHINKING PARKS INITIATIVE! “When I came across a funding opportunity at NESTA called Rethinking Parks, the aim of which was to come up with innovative ways to make public parks more financially sustainable, I knew that my peers could take a good crack at it. We got together a group of Associates, developed an idea, and worked closely with multiple London Borough Councils. The group’s efforts got us through to the finals, but we fell at the last hurdle to be funded. It was a great learning experience for all and allowed us to work closely together – if you’re interested in the concept we came up with, please check out our video here”
PROFESSIONAL COACHING! “The coaching system that On Purpose provides helped me identify what I’m passionate about. I’m now much more certain about what I want to pursue than ever before. And when we know where we’re going, everything else is much easier!”
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OUTSIDE ON PURPOSE
Discovering NEW SKILLS
ACUMEN HUMAN-CENTRED DESIGN! Several On Purpose Associates formed a team to participate in the Acumen Human-Centred Design course for Social Innovation. Through weekly workshops based on the online course materials, as well as independent research, we discovered how to find innovative solutions to complex social and environmental problems using IDEO-developed techniques for market research, ideation and prototyping. Working as a team, they were able to leverage the diverse skill sets and experiences of each member.
CODING CLUB! On Purpose has a lot of clubs to get involved in – one I took a lot from is the weekly Coding Club run by Fellow Daniel Bughon. It’s an opportunity to learn in a supportive environment and tackle a project together or try something alone at your own pace. It gave me the impetus and confidence to complete 500 Codecademy exercises in just a couple of months. 30
HELPING OTHER ORGANISATIONS
Hackney Historic Buildings Trust
ENTREPRENEURSHIP BOARD MEMBERSHIPS! On Purpose has given us the confidence and toolkit to contribute to community organisations as board members. Our cohort currently provides support and challenge to:! • Sound and Music: the national agency for contemporary music! • Hackney Historic Buildings Trust: a charity preserving established buildings in Hackney Freightliners Farm: a charity and social enterprise urban farm in the heart of Islington! • Lawdale Junior School: primary school in Bethnal Green with ~75% pupils on free school meals
ENTREPRENEURS CLUB! We established an Entrepreneurs Club so that we could support each other in developing our social businesses. Having each other, as well as the whole OnP network, has proved invaluable in motivating one another, testing ideas and leveraging our different skill sets. We may even have forged some future partnerships!!
!
Watch this space for:! • BluBel: a digital application to improve cycling safety! • LifeUp: an e-learning mindfulness programme to help individuals build mental resilience and well-being! • Guacamaya: a social business importing colourful, handmade, high-quality products from Latin America that tell a story, connecting customers with artisans in their communities! • Samanata Yoga: an ethical yoga clothing with an innovative supply chain and reinvestment model
UNDERSTANDING IMPACT! “Through On Purpose’s network, I came across the opportunity to produce the Carbon Mapping Report for Save the Children UK – I’m currently working with the charity’s staff across the country to understand the impact it has on the environment, and ultimately recommend ways to reduce its burden.” 31
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Developing others
CREATING LEARNING TOOLS! “While at UnLtd, I was tasked with creating a learnings tool (on a shoestring) to help shorten the learning curve for newer organisations supporting social entrepreneurs. The On Purpose network was very helpful during the research phase and the different conversations I had helped me define a scope and clear objectives for the project. I particularly enjoyed collaborating with the web designers from AHA Design, a social enterprise whose mission is to provide disadvantaged jobseekers with paid opportunities to develop and showcase their digital skills, in order to transition into secure employment.”
FUNDRAISING! “During my placement with the National Citizen Service I led a project to identify new business development opportunities, in order to diversify their funding and improve financial resilience. In my first week, I identified a funding grant and proposed an application to the Senior Leadership team. After spearheading a 3-month multi-stage application process, NCS secured nearly £150,000 in external funding. We also hosted a high-profile programme visit from VIP backers Princess Beatrice and Sam Branson, which was featured in Hello! magazine.”

FINDING SUPPORT!
“Through my placement at Shakespeare Schools Festival, I had the opportunity to help SSF in an event where five schools performed at a West End theatre. After a whole afternoon of at least four rehearsals on stage before the main performance, I was more and more impressed with these children. The amount of energy, confidence, sense of responsibility and enthusiasm kept growing in them through the night. By the end of the evening and after a great performance, the children, their teachers, families and I couldn’t be more proud. Please watch the event here: SSF Gala, The Lyric Theatre, London”
“My first placement was with Porticus UK with the task of recommending how they could improve its support to charities and social enterprises working within the UK’s criminal justice sector. As part of my research, I visited grant recipients throughout the country, many located in prisons. These were truly eye-opening and memorable experiences that demonstrated that there is great scope for innovation in this space, and underlined how important it is for our society to strike a more effective balance between the punishment and rehabilitation of offenders.” 32
