APRIL 2014 COHORT YEARBOOK

Our New Fellows

On Purpose is about change. We believe that business can be a driving force for social and environmental good, and that the next generation of leaders must be able to speak the language of both the commercial and social sectors to help tackle the most pressing problems of the future. On Purpose is a one-year leadership development programme for professionals wanting to transition in to social enterprise. We challenge our Associates to become the next generation of social enterprise leaders. Each of our Associates works in two innovative socially or environmentally motivated organisations and takes part in personal and professional development through weekly training, w and coaching with industry leaders. We provide our Associates with the space to learn, develop, experiment, and above all, to change. I am proud to introduce our April 2014 cohort, who completed their programme and became Fellows in March 2015. I have greatly enjoyed our time together, and know that the end of their time at On Purpose marks the beginning of the achievements and the impact they will go on to have in the social enterprise space. If you would like to get in touch with any of the Associates included here, please feel free to contact them directly.

The Programme

The On Purpose programme combines two six-month paid placements in innovative purpose-driven organisations with world class training, mentoring and coaching from industry leaders.

PRESTIGIOUS WORK PLACEMENTS On Purpose Associates are placed in organisations that are working to create social and / or environmental good in business-like ways.Typically reporting directly to senior management, Associates take responsibility for work streams that are significant to the success of the organisation, while simultaneously benefitting from learning first-hand from organisations that are at the forefront of the social enterprise space.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Associates participate in over 200 hours of training over the course of the programme, covering commercial skills, social sector knowledge, professional skills and personal development. Our trainers are drawn from top leaders in their respective fields, who stretch the minds of the Associates and build their professional capabilities and personal impact.

The f our c orne r sto nes MENTORING Each Associate engages in fortnightly one-to-one mentoring from top-flight professionals. Largely drawn from the world’s most renowned strategy consulting firms, the mentors provide an independent voice to support and challenge the Associates in the work they undertake in their placements.

EXECUTIVE COACHING During the programme, mentoring is complemented with quarterly executive coaching. This gives the Associates an invaluable opportunity to step back and consider how they can be most impactful as leaders, and to focus on what it will take for them to achieve their longer term career ambitions.

SOCIAL SECTOR KNOWLEDGE Explore the social (enterprise) landscape, understand the most important debates, differences and similarities across sectors.

A typical Friday afternoon allows the Associates to benefit from both an external trainer, leading a session on their particular area of expertise, and internal peer-led learning. The topics covered fall in to four themes, described opposite.

Meet The Cohort Coming to On Purpose from 7 countries and with backgrounds ranging from Publishing to Finance, Law and International Development, our cohort has a rich set of skills and experience. The year has provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the social enterprise space by way of training, placements, mentoring and coaching. We have each spent two six month placements in purpose-driven organisations with very diverse missions, from ending domestic violence to the production of sustainable carpet tiles, or the growth of social investment. The projects we have been involved with have presented interesting challenges and allowed us to draw on what we have learnt throughout the year to support our placement organisations to solve problems, plan for the future, and develop their strategies. Weekly training sessions have enabled us to learn about the nuts and bolts of building social enterprise: we have explored business planning, understanding the barriers to scale, identifying beneficiaries’ needs, measuring social impact - and acquired invaluable social sector knowledge. We have worked with our mentors and coaches to think differently about how to approach problems and how to tackle development goals, as well as learning how to put into practice the frameworks set out in training and consolidate new skills and knowledge. The abundance of events and talks on offer throughout the year has helped us to build our networks and further our individual interests. Several of the cohort were involved in Wrap Up! - a project that spanned 8 weeks and produced limited edition wrapping paper designed by three top illustrators, the proceeds of which provided Christmas dinners for residents at the homeless action charity Caritas Anchor House for two consecutive years. As this invaluable year comes to an end, we go on to start our own ventures, return to placements to build on the work we have already done, or look for challenging opportunities in socially-minded organisations.

What’s inspired me most during On Purpose? Ray Anderson’s brilliantly vivid metaphor (in The Corporation) for unsustainable modern capitalism – the early aviators who thought they were flying, till they hit the ground (hard). It’s been a sobering but exciting year, to meet so many passionate people who’ve looked out of the cockpit and seen the ground rushing up to meet us (in Ray’s words). I’ve become a firm believer in the power of business to be a force for good – it’s the future.

She managed, single-handedly, a workshop on Theory of Change in Palestine with a group of British Council Society staff. She stuck with the agenda and got through the material despite the tendency of the group to go off on political tangents. Caitlin worked through interviews with a large number of project team members and beneficiaries, persisting with those who had limited incentive to talk with her. Highlights from the year

placement Deliverables

SKILL Sharing

Above: Recruitment of the first On Purpose cohort in Paris, November 2014, led by London Fellow Félix Beaulieu.

We had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of exciting projects in our placements. These included an accountability report for Save the Children, supporting a company to re-certify as a B Corporation through the completion of a rigorous performance assessment, designing an alumni programme, new business development to encourage corporate procurement from social enterprises, and setting up a transport pilot for a special educational needs school.

From finance to investing, innovation to interviews, we’ve crossed sectors and organisations to share our expertise and bring knowledge to new contexts. Paul gave nursery managers a crash course in finance and accounting, Charlotte led an organisation-wide agile project management session and Eimear visited Big Society Capital, sharing effective prototyping tools for engaging teams in innovation. Clémence supported the birth of OnP in Paris, translating documents and conducting

GETTING OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONES As well as learning new skills and experiencing new environments, the On Purpose programme also encouraged us to be brave and push ourselves out of our comfort zones. Rebecca and Dimitra threw themselves into public speaking, talking about social enterprise to new audiences, Sara B visited Greenstream in rural Wales to learn more about 101 uses of old carpet tile, while Paul used his time at LEYF, to dress up as Father Christmas to entertain children staff and parents. Rght: Sara B and Neo in a creativity training led by OnP fellow Jon Khoo!

EVENTS

Outside of training, placements, mentoring and coaching, OnP has connected us to a world of events that have contributed to and shaped our year- these have ranged from the small and specific to the extensive and all-encompassing. While Neofytos enjoyed deepening his understanding of the uses of Social Impact Bonds, hearing commissioners’ plans for the future and seeing how institutional investors are driving the market, at a day hosted by Social Finance, for Sara, a Counterpoints Arts Learning Lab featuring animators, architects and academics discussing the role of the arts in refugee camps and urban settlements particularly stood out.

Dimitra loved meeting with social entrepreneurs and civil society leaders at the Good Deals conference and was inspired to hear about new ways to create impact and sustainability. The Emerge Conference in Oxford was also a highlight for many of us, a chance to meet global change-agents and experts involved in everything from frontline campaigning, to leading entrepreneurial ventures and championing the insights that big data can offer social ventures.

INTERESTING PEOPLE

Interesting places

Above: Caitlin travelled to Pakistan with British Council. Throughout the year we’ve found ourselves in lots of unexpected places. From Downing Street to the Olympic Aquatic Centre and London Zoo, to carpet factories in rural Wales, our placements have led us to Brussels, Bristol, Edinburgh, Pakistan, Palestine and Paris, and seen us working in offices, warehouses, industrial estates and dynamic co-working spaces across London. The most exciting of these places haven’t always been the farthest afield, but the interesting hubs and spaces buzzing under the surface: Camden Collective, Shoreditch Trust, Hackney Pirates and House of St Barnabas.

Over the year we’ve had access to some amazing leaders in and out of the social enterprise world, through our weekly training, in our placements and at events the community connects us to. We’ve heard from individuals on the ground who champion and encourage positive social change, from Malala and India’s ‘Menstrual Man’ to Muhammad Yunus. From the MD of Divine Chocolate, Sophi Tranchell, to Rubies in the Rubble founder, Jenny Dawson, inspirational individuals have been a very valuable part of our On Purpose journey.

SKILLS

FRONTLINE EXPERIENCE

On Purpose has taught us a host of new skills, and allowed us to learn from the experiences of others in the SE space. We’ve explored everything from consultancy-style problem solving and financial modelling, to the art of negotiation. Our trainers and guest speakers have provided us with a wealth of knowledge to take into post OnP life, both personally and professionally. They’ve shared their advice for keeping ventures lean, using different influencing techniques, and importantly, how to keep an audience from falling asleep during our presentations.

One of the best things about On Purpose was that we met and worked directly with the beneficiaries of our placements. Rebecca and Leo worked alongside disabled and blind people at Clarity, Paul with homeless residents at Caritas Anchor House, Dimitra with female ex-offenders at Working Chance and Clémence met transport users at HCT. Seeing the day-to-day positive impact in their lives was one of the most enlightening experiences of the On Purpose year.

working together: WRAP UP! 2014 At the end of 2014, we joined forces for a special cohort project: Wrap Up! 2014. Through this project we gathered limited edition illustrations created by top designers, printed them on recycled paper and used the sales proceeds to pay for Christmas dinners for residents at Caritas Anchor House, a homeless social action charity and On Purpose placement. We sold the paper through Indiegogo and reached our target in an impressive 5 hours! We also generated a surplus of £1,266 which will be spent on the Caritas Anchor House residents’ Christmas dinner in 2015.
