OCTOBER 2014 COHORT YEARBOOK

Our New Fellows On Purpose is about change - both societal and personal change. We believe that business can be a driving force for social and environmental good, and that the next generation of leaders must be able to speak the language of both the commercial and social sectors to help tackle the most pressing problems of the future. This is as true now, as we expand On Purpose to Paris and Berlin, as it was five years ago when I founded On Purpose. On Purpose is a one-year leadership development programme for professionals wanting to transition into social enterprise. We challenge our Associates to become the next generation of social enterprise leaders. Each of our Associates works in two innovative, socially or environmentally motivated organisations and takes part in personal and professional development through weekly training, mentoring and coaching with industry leaders. We provide our Associates with the space to learn, develop, experiment, and above all, to change. I am proud to introduce our October 2014 London cohort, who completed the programme and became Fellows in September 2015. I have greatly enjoyed our time together, and know that the end of their time at On Purpose marks the beginning of the achievements and the impact they will go on to have in the social enterprise space. If you would like to get in touch with any of the Associates included here, please feel free to contact them directly.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

The Programme

The On Purpose programme combines two six-month paid placements in innovative purpose-driven organisations with world class training, mentoring and coaching from industry leaders.

PRESTIGIOUS WORK PLACEMENTS On Purpose Associates are placed in organisations that are working to create social and / or environmental good in business-like ways.Typically reporting directly to senior management, Associates take responsibility for work streams that are significant to the success of the organisation, while simultaneously benefitting from learning first-hand from organisations that are at the forefront of the social enterprise space.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Associates participate in over 200 hours of training over the course of the programme, covering commercial skills, social sector knowledge, professional skills and personal development. Our trainers are drawn from top leaders in their respective fields, who stretch the minds of the Associates and build their professional capabilities and personal impact.

The fo ur MENTORING Each Associate engages in fortnightly one-to-one mentoring from top-flight professionals. Largely drawn from the world’s most renowned strategy consulting firms, the mentors provide an independent voice to support and challenge the Associates in the work they undertake in their placements.

EXECUTIVE COACHING During the programme, mentoring is complemented with quarterly executive coaching. This gives the Associates an invaluable opportunity to step back and consider how they can be most impactful as leaders, and to focus on what it will take for them to achieve their longer term career ambitions.

Meet The Cohort Coming to On Purpose from six countries and with backgrounds ranging from Communications to Finance, Law and International Development, our cohort has a rich set of skills and experience. The year has provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the social enterprise space by way of training, placements, mentoring and coaching. We have each spent two six month placements in purpose-driven organisations with very diverse missions, from teaching inmates in Brixton prison how to bake, to scaling the UK’s leading digital learning platform, to the growth of the UK social investment market. The projects we have been involved with have presented interesting challenges and allowed us to draw on what we have learnt throughout the year to support our placement organisations to solve problems, plan for the future, and develop their strategies. Weekly training sessions have enabled us to learn about the nuts and bolts of building social enterprise: we have explored business planning, understanding the barriers to scale, identifying beneficiaries’ needs, measuring social impact - and acquired invaluable social sector knowledge. We have worked with our mentors and coaches to think differently about how to approach problems and how to tackle personal development goals, as well as learning how to put into practice the frameworks set out in training and consolidate new skills and knowledge. The abundance of events and talks on offer throughout the year has helped us to build our networks and further our individual interests. The cohort were involved in delivering the On Purpose 5th birthday celebrations – including building the ever-growing ‘Humans On Purpose’ website and organising the biggest On Purpose event to date, which attracted over 250 people from London, Paris and Berlin’s social enterprise communities. As this invaluable year comes to an end, we go on to start our own ventures, return to placements to build on the work we have already done, or look for challenging opportunities in socially-minded organisations.

Stretch. This, in a word, encapsulates my On Purpose experience. Having to solve bigger problems with less resources stretched my intellect and creativity. Navigating a foreign culture with new norms, business practices, and social expectations stretched my interpersonal acumen. Speaking up, taking command, letting go in an unfamiliar environment - it amazes me how much On Purpose has pushed me out of my comfort zone. Having worked with the most remarkable yet grounded people, I feel more excited than ever to push my boundaries and drive business as a force for social good. A stretch - but one definitely worth taking.

Highlights from the year

EMBERCOMBE Like many On Purpose Associates before us, the October ’14 cohort gathered together at Paddington station on a rainy, cold January afternoon to travel down to Embercome in Devon. If the idea of spending 3 nights and 3 days in a yurt in the middle of winter was not enough to concern us, then the hushed and reverent tones used by Fellows and older Associates when discussing this compulsory part of the Programme certainly was. Embercombe is a social enterprise close to Dartmoor which seeks to inspire committed action for a truly sustainable world. It offers a variety of ways for people to be involved whether as volunteers on a short-term or long-term basis or by attending their variety of programmes and courses to develop leadership and personal discovery to those involved.

It would go against the sacred On Purpose code to give away what went on over the course of our stay there. Suffice to say that as well as learning how to keep a log fire burning all day and all night, we also had the opportunity to spend time in the beautiful Devon countryside, work together as a team, learn more about one another as individuals and reflect upon the journey we were undertaking together through On Purpose. It was a hugely important part of the year for all the Associates and one that set us up extremely well for the following 8 months together.

27

EASTER IN TUSCANY

Given the October 2014 cohort’s love of good times, good conversation and making the most of a four-day weekend, it’s no surprise that we arranged to go away together over the Easter break. What is impressive is that we arranged this only a few months after meeting one another, and we invited boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives to join. The benefit of having such an international flavour to a group of 18 is that between you, a number of languages can be covered off. The Italian speakers amongst us were able to find a beautiful and reasonably priced Tuscan farmhouse near Palaia able to accommodate us for the weekend. Having just hit the halfway point of the Programme we put our recently honed project management and Excel skills to good use to arrange car hire, excursions and task allocation before we even arrived. Palaia was a beautiful place to escape to and we found that although we were not there as part of On Purpose, we still wanted to continue our weekly practice and personal development. Alongside long country walks, games and good food we also took time for goal-setting and meditation over the course of the weekend. This was an absolute highlight of the year which demonstrated the depth of relationships which had been established and made us very hopeful that now that Friday afternoon training sessions have come to an end, the network we have created will continue.

HUMANS ON PURPOSE

Early in the On Purpose year, the October 2014 cohort was tasked with leading On Purpose’s five year anniversary celebrations in a way that would mobilise the existing community and also share the On Purpose story with new audiences. Our cohort decided to build an evergrowing platform called “Humans On Purpose” (similar to the very wellknown “Humans of New York”) that profiles some of the people who have been involved with or touched by On Purpose over the last five years. Through photographic portraits and quotes, the project aims to capture the essence of individuals’ purpose, in whatever form that may be. We believe Humans On Purpose is a poignant reminder of where the On Purpose story began: the need to do things differently, to make a difference, to change our world – a need that’s both intimately personal and part of a growing, global movement. As On Purpose grows, the aim is for Humans On Purpose to follow suit, providing an outlet for those involved with the programme to share stories about people who matter.

http://humansonpurpose.com 29

HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY ON PURPOSE!

The cohort was in agreement that On Purpose couldn’t celebrate turning five years without a big party. Led by the Core Team of Nathalie, Nadia and Rahul, we put ourselves to the task of delivering the biggest and best On Purpose party ever! As well as raising significant sponsorship through the On Purpose network, we secured a prestigious speaker line-up of Lord Victor Adebowale CBE, Chief Executive of Turning Point, Faisal Rahmen OBE, Founder of Fair Finance, Caroline Angus, Director of Gravity Light (and On Purpose Fellow), and Mac Macartney, Author, Speaker and Founder of Embercombe, with June Sarpong acting as host. The party attracted over 250 guests from across the social enterprise community including those who have made On Purpose possible: the Associates, Fellows, Mentors, Coaches and Core Team. The cohort is extremely proud to have brought together this unique gathering of people for such a landmark celebration.
