The Hottest Queen In Town...

Ava Clear

DRAG Magazine Sat down with the Many Super HOT faces of Ava Clear... and here is what we found out...

QA

. How did you get your start? . A very close friend of mine was a DRAG performer and thought it would be fun to dress me up for an AIDS benefit. I agreed to do it on a couple of conditions: He had to do my make up, I would wear one of his headdresses and I would make a dress with a train so I wouldn’t have to walk. LOL. I had fun, and kept doing it. . What kind of DRAG do you do? . I am not a camp queen, but I also don’t consider myself a female illussionist. I like lots of glitter and rhinestones, sometimes over the top make up. I like to consider the type of DRAG I do to be the entertaining type. . One piece of advice you would give someone interested in doing DRAG? . I actually have two. Be prepared to make this a hobby and not a career, because to do good DRAG you will spend lots and lots of money on it. The initial start up costs alone to get all the make up, wigs, costumes, etc are a lot. 2: Be your own person and be your own style, but listen and take hints from other people, especially a seasoned veteran to the stage, but also remember that you are an individual and different things work for different people. . What was your most expensive costume? . Well, my most expensive piece of DRAG is my competition evening gown, which with the jewelery, shoes, and hair, I spent over $4,000. Costume wise, my rainbow presentation for Miss Savannah Pride cost me close to a grand. . What is the worst experience on stage? . I have yet to have one. I have had mishaps on stage, duct tape not sticking on chest or crotch, wig to heavy in the back and pulling backwards off my forehead, etc, but I don’t consider them bad experiences, I consider them learning experiences. We are men in dresses and wigs putting on a show, if something goes wrong and you can’t laugh at yourself, you are taking it way too serious!

2 - DragMag - May 2009

Q A

. What has been your best experience on stage? . I have been fortunate to have so many of them so far in my career.

Q A

.What is your biggest accom-

plishment thus far?

. I have so many. I was featured in the gay and lesbian issue of

The Charleston City Paper. The biggest accomplishment though is being able to call some very very talented people my close friends. I might not do DRAG forever, but I now have some dear friends that will be dear friends for life!

Q A

. What pageant catergories have you won.

. I almost always win interview and onstage question. I also place

high in presentation. I recently won evening gown. My hardest category is talent. I am not a dancer, so finding a real good talent that still places high is a challenge. It seems that judges LOVE a high energy dance talent done to modern music, and that just isn’t me.

Q A

.How long does it take you to get into DRAG? . For a midnight show, I get to the club between 9 and 9:30. In a

pinch, I can throw on a black lid face in 45 minutes, but I prefer that extra time to tweak the make up and really just take my time and not be rushed. . How long have you been doing DRAG? . This November will be going on 4 years. . Do you ever get nervous on stage if so... what do you do to get over it? . I still get nervous before I go on stage, and to get over it, you just do it!

Show Cast and Songs they performed...

Once again Pantheon Ayanna never fails at presenting ~ Shut up and drive mix~ an amazing performance! ~Nudity Mix~ With the Amazing Dana ~Feedback~ St. James performing a mix Xavier of poker face to Lady Sap~ Thanks for the memories~ phires Jai Ho. The crowd ~I Don’t Care~ went absolutely nuts over Blaze it. Ava Clear burned it up ~Country Grammar~ with little to nothing left ~My own worst enemy~ for the imagination. If you’ve got it flaunt it girl! Karmen Sutra ~Body Beautiful~ ~Over the Rainbow~ Remember High Hair & high heels! ~Chloe

After a late start the show at The Chart got off to an excellent start. With it being Ayannas last show there was a lot of support shown. This show was smooth being that Kings and Queens were variating the stage. Three out of towners were surprised at how well the south can do DRAG! Way to go guys and girls!!! Daniel from Michigan said it was a phenominal performance. Brittany from Pennsyhlvania said she was definately coming back to another show next time she’s here. David from Michigan says the show was really pumped up! Great crowd control and excellent mixes of music. As for now this is Chole on the streets and Remember High Hair & high heels! ~Chloe

“Venus, the Goddess of Rock…Rocks the House!” Concert Photography and Review by: April Taylor

If you weren’t at Patrick’s Pub in Charleston, SC on April 17th, 2009…then where were you?! Venus, the Goddess of Rock and Entertainment, didn’t disappoint with her one-woman show, “Pretty in Pink.” With 2 half-hour performances, Venus (Pink) rocked the house. The show included 14 of Pink’s most well-known songs, along with 5 wig changes, and 10 costume changes (many of which happened flawlessly on-stage). The show played out like a concert, with only a small break in between the 2 performances. Needless to say, sweat was included in the performance at no additional charge! There was some interaction with the crowd at the beginning of the performance. As Venus took the stage she claimed that this was as close to Pink as Charleston would ever get. One young girl up front foolishly disagreed. (She apparently had seen Pink in Myrtle Beach some time ago). The poor girl was quickly put in her place…even as Pink, you can’t take away the Venus that we all know and love. Aside from a few minor technical glitches with the music, both performances went off without a hitch. Some of the highlights included “So What,” a crowd favorite, “Just Like a Pill” (a different look for Venus with black hair) and “Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely),” the final number. At the end of the concert, a tired and sweaty (yet somehow still fabulous) Venus was greeted with yellow roses. The “Pretty in Pink” concert proved that Venus is, indeed, our Goddess of Rock. She was able to put on a show that would normally have required multiple performers. Most importantly, she was able to entertain the crowd. As we’ve heard her say in many of her Saturday night cabarets: “Cheap drag isn’t good, and good drag isn’t cheap.” Anyone who attended her “Pretty in Pink” concert left the way they should have: happy, entertained, and broke!

“NO MORE DRAMA IN MY LIFE” MARY J. BLIGE Dating a DRAG Queen, What’s the deal? By: Jazmyn A. Starr

Hello readers, this is Miss Jazmyn A. Starr. This is one of many articles that I will be writing for DRAG Magazine. My first article has to do with what is wrong with dating a DRAG Queen? I must say I am happy that the ones who are able to get a man and stay with them is a good thing. Hold on to him, because will you ever find another that cares as much as he does. I have one thing I need to ask though, what is wrong with dating an entertainer? I have heard every excuse in the book about dating DRAG Queens. The thing is, it is a bad thing to date an entertainer. Dating an entertainer does come with its perks. Just think about it. You never have to pay to get into the bar, you get the chance to meet new and exciting people. You get to go to different places when they are booked out of town. Now with all that is that really a bad thing? Yet there are still people out there that have this little bug in their ear, thinking that dating a DRAG Queen is a bad thing. If you have ever done it then you know that is not a bad thing. I have had the opportunity to have dated 2 guys that never had a problem with me being in DRAG. They know that when they came home with me, that they knew what they were going home with. Jazmyn is a stage persona and Jay is reality. Now trying to find a guy is quite possibly the hardest thing to do. Guys are not as spen minded. I try to let one thing stay in my head and that is if you stop looking the right man will come along. I still believe that, but sometimes you have to wonder, will the right one come along. 6 - DragMag - May 2009

Hi, my name is Lady Sapphire. Coming into to the drag industry was very difficult. I would know. I have been performing for about 3 months now. The first thing I would tell anyone starting out is find you a home bar. Meaning a bar that you perform at all the time. The queens there can help you out ALOT... I have recently been offered a position as Pantheon’s rising star. It was a great chance for me to expand my name. There is always room for improvement, even if you havee been doing drag all of your life. In my first month I thought that I was flawless, and no one could tell me anything.I think nthis is how everyone feels when first starting out. I know now that, like I said earlier, there is always room for me to better myself. If someone told me that my makeup sucked I thought they were hating on me. But, eventually I learned that m makeup did indeed look like shit. Being able to work with the people at Pantheon is the greatest thing! I am working with the Legendary Brook Collins and Ava Clear, that alone gives me inspiration to keep going in my drag career. It is a really difficult and time consuming profession, but when I am on stage, there is no greater feeling in the world! So, everyone come out to Pantheon any Sunday, and check out this rising star! Thanks! -Lady Sapphire

“You could spend weeks, months, even years laboring with the Personality Ethic of trying to change your attitudes and behaviors and not even begin to approach the phenomenon of change that occurs spontaneously when we see things differently”.

Hi readers, the name is Nicole Desire. I am a Female Impersonator or as others would call it a DRAG queen extraordinaire. I perform bi weekly at Patricks. The quote above comes from the book The Seven Habbits of Highly Effective People it explains a switch in how things are seen. We need a switch on insight. The insight on how the DRAG Industry is seen. I’ll give you a full night scenario, Go ahead grab your drink and the pop corn...Not! As a man making the transformation into a Female impersonator the most important factor is makeup. Maybe you have heard the saying that cheap DRAG ain’t good and good DRAG isn’t cheap. My face is my canvas and I am the artist, and when the curtains open I am my masterpiece. I have been doing DRAG for about a month and a half now and have invested lots.

I spend close to two hours with my make-up alone. So as your painting your face your running through the lyrics of your three or four numbers in your head as you make love with your body just to slide into a girdle. Don’t try to breath it doesn’t help! Without doubt you”ll fall over from asfixation, just kidding. The host announces you to open. The lights are all on smoke falls like waterfalls from the ceiling. The curtain opens and bam that damn spotlight falls right in your path of sight. To me it feels erotic almost. As if the dresses, wigs, and make-up all align to create their very own personality. Straight from the hens mouth itself “ gurl your something else.” When I put my attire on I am Nicole and she is me. As a manager I am open with my employee’s about my DRAG life. They know that one night a week I am a women.

The most often asked questions from them is do you want to be a women? Whoa hit the breaks. I tell them straight from the heart. I don’t want to be a woman, I am a man. I love the attention, I love being the center of attention. I believe the most inspiring moments in my career yet is when I receive emails on my myspace and the people in the crowd that say I am beautiful and they liked to take pictures of me or with me. No one ever said things like that to me as a guy, but it made me feel good. The money is ok what you make you usually turn right back around and put it into more DRAG. So the next time you that you attend the performances it takes a lot to look that good. ~Hey Gurl Hey~ By: Nicole Desire

On these two pages, I have provided a pictorial step by step, as sue “make up basics”. These steps work for me. Try some of these works for you. Always try new things and evolve in your make u how I did my make up a year ago and I am sure it is different than el and watch other queens paint. If you ever have any questions abo a question for the “Ask Ava” section, please do not hesitate to em 4 Eye brows have been covered with elmers stick glue. Once dried, I put on my foundation. Panstick in my opinion is the best foundation, goes on smoothe, yes has a thick, high coverage. When you put the foundation on the eybrows, don’t wipe them, leave it heavy over the glue or you will get shiny spots. Next I powdered with foundation.

Next I draw on my eyebrows. The inside corner is where my actual eyebrow is. I go up from the outside of the blue in my eye and that is where I start the arch and I end the eyebrow where my conture is. I use a wax pencil to draw the brows on.

5 I put a red shadow on my lid and use a brown powder over the pencil I used to draw my eyebrow on. I also used a black matte powder and put it into my crease.

3 I next use a dark brown bronzer on my forehead and extended out from the corner of the eye. I also put a highlight powder in the center and blend these two with my blush color.

10 - DragMag - May 2009

6 I took my foundation powder and put this under my eyebrow. I also used liquid black as an eyeliner, extending it on the inside of the eye and pulling it ou on the outside. I blend the black in the crease and use a dark current pencil liner under my eye.

previously stated in last months ise steps on yourself and choose what up. How you see Ava now, is not n how i will look in a year as I travout my make up techniques, or even mail me at cofcwaiter@hotmail.com.

7

In this picture the highlight powder is added to cheeks, forehead and under the cheeks. I also sweep highlight powder down the center of my nose. This will bring out the cheeks and “T” zone of the forehead and nose.

I now added white pencil liner on the inside of my bottom lid. I use a liquid white on the inside corner of my eye and extend the line out.

8

11 I next added a dark red glitter onto my eyelide over the red eye shadow. I put on a lip gloss and put the glitter on top of this. Hair spray tends to burn my eye so I don’t like that method. I also added mascara.

9

I like to add lots of glitter and rhinestones. I love sparkily, shiny things. I glue rhinestones on in different places. This time I put them over the eyebrow and one on the inside of eye. I also added my false lashes. I like #101’s.

12 I next added my shadow contour to my cheeks, nose and jawline. This helps pop out the cheek bones and also knock off the more squared jawline.

The last thing to do is draw the lips on, and I have added ultra fine glitter on top of the lipstick and blending all the powders together.

I took it and Flipped it!!!! By: Andy Citino

Hello Everyone! My name is 6pak I am a male impersonator {and trans man} from Sarasota Fl and i first have to say, CONGRATS to Drag Mag and thank you for a publication that is all inclusive. I want everyone to know that I support and I am behind Male Impersonation 100% however some of the things im going to talk about may upset some people, these are things that I have experienced and have learned in my 7 short years in the business, and I think are things that most are aware of but are afraid to speak about. This business is about entertainment and illusion I believe Illusion can be tought and being an Entertainer cannot, that is what i think alot of Kings are not getting, Charisma,Stage Presence,Engaging the crowd are things that are inate-the X factor if you will, this cannot be tought. We have all seen Queens that are lacking in illusion but hot damn are they entertaining!, amazing entertainers, its still clear that its a man in a dress BUT WE DONT CARE CAUSE WE ARE ENTERTAINED! 12 - DragMag - May 2009

What I believe has happened is “drag kining” has become “trendy” and is approached most times without much thought, all in the name of fun, and not taken seriously, also going into it without LEARNING first. Male Impersonation is at its peak, its been around longer than one would think but just now is it close to being as main streem as Female impersonation, so now is the time to step up the game. what has happened here in florida is that most “kings” are not entertainers. friends may have made the suggestion, they themselves think they can entertain, and no one has been honest enough with then to tell then “this is not for you” so being that its not a “business” to them, they continue, bars allow then on stage without audition because they will work for free and in the end this is what the crowds see, the queens see (those with the knowledge and power) and the result is negative. drag kings have a bad rep here in florida for the reasons stated above. how do you learn? I learned from the ones with all the knowledge

THE QUEENS some who support MI have taken the time to talk to me but most times I just watched, I watched everthing they did performance, costumes, how they talked to people, interacted with club owners/promoters- I TOOK IT AND FLIPPED IT! I found my own uniqueness, I now have been performing for a living for 2.5 years, my full time gig, what pays my bills. my biggest challenge has been fighting #1 old school drag thinking (queens only) ans #2 proving that i am EQUAL to any queen on stage. i

We can do this! we can be just as respected, but we need to be on the same level jeans and a t-shirt is not getting it, not knowing your words is not getting it, if only your friends are tipping you, your not getting it, have someone video tape your performance, watch yourself, are you an entertainer?, or someone who just likes the spot light? Ask the queen with the biggest name in your town what she HONESTLY thinks about your perfomance, trust me she will tell you. If your new there are talent contests, drag idol, so you think you can

We Don’t Care, Cause we are entertained

know this sounds arrogant but in not I have been trying to raise the bar so that Male Impersonation gets the same respect that Female Impersonation does. The respnse i get when contacting clubs for work 1 out of 2 calls say “we have tried drag kings it wasnt received well” so you see, what the next one is doing effects the rest (unfortunately). I am trying to raise the bar for Male Impersonators everywhere there are some amazing drag kings out there, that will help in any way they can but we need to be asked no one asks. I am always approached by kings to perfoem but never once have I been asked “ what do I need to do to learn?” thats a problem.

drag, drag contests always happening this is where you get stage time and experience - not a show where peoiple are paying a cover to see a professional drag show. I want to say it again I support male inpersonation 100% we are unique, we are something new, we are entertainers, we can change the resistance, we WILL be main streem, and one day we will have the same respect WE JUST NEED TO RAISE THE BAR, TAKE IT UP A NOTCH AND WE WILL BE THERE!!! My intent is not to down anyone, just my insight, experience, and hope. With respect, 6pak.

Lady Sapphire After an amazing performance I had the privledge to set down to a slightly unhealthy breakfast with the ever so fabulous Lady Sapphire. We discussed her first performance as a cast member at Pantheon. When asked what inspired the yough talent to begin DRAG she quickly responded, “looking at all the DRAG Queens and seeing all the glitz and glamor, it’s just amazing.” This being the first performance as a cast member when asked how to you feel your first experience was tonight the response was, “really good, Pantheon has an amazing crowd. Having the cast in the back to help me is very good also, Pantheon has such a great atmosphere”, said Lady Sapphire. When asked to pick her one DRAG idol the instant response was “it’s really hard for me to say... I mean I look up to different queens for different things. I look up to Ava Clear for costume ideas, and the legendary Brooke Collins for make up. Every DRAG queen has their spark as to why I look up to them.” One last question was that if you could be one make up product what would you be? Instantaneously she responded “eyeshadow”! After a quick chuckle she said, “honey I need all types of products to make Sapphire, Lady Sapphire! Till next time remember High Heels & High Hair! Chole

14 - DragMag - May 2009

High Hair & High Heels The first thing I can say from my first DRAG experiance is CONFIDENCE! If you don’t have confidence and will power it’s not for you. The hardest part for me was the fact that I was running around losing my mind trying to pick a song and an outfit. Once I got my song, I got my outfit, but trust me it’s no all about the music and outfit. The moves, the looks, and words are what it’s all about. If you don’t know the words, the crowd will chew you up and spit you out!!! Learn your songs!!! From my first experience I got a lot of positive feedback. Many of my peers presented me with the best advice and ways to improve. such as my hair, not me! The outfit phenominal! The song “something I would play after a break up”, as quoted by Brittney from Charlotte. Make sure the song fits you! I learned that Celine Dion may not be the best music artist for me to impersonate. We all learn from each other! Even though some things seem hurtful, take it witha grain of salt, hold your head up high and remember, High Hair & High Heels.

Charles, Do you use a piece for the illussion of a penis? Michelle, St. Pete Florida

Some do and some don’t. I personally don’t. I wear more loose fitting jeans, so it does not help me. Occasionally I have worn tighter jeans or leather pants, and for that, yes, I do use a piece. My piece consists of a rolled up newspaper. :} Don’t tell the drag king secret! Xavier, Queens take hours to get ready. How long does it take a King? Is there anamosity between kings and queens because of this? Shannon, Dallas Texas

Kings do normally take a lot less time. Basics, a king will draw on a beard, then glue hair on top. Some kings will also do make up to change their face shape to make it more masculine. On average, it does take queens a lot longer, but if a king is good, he puts just as much into his costuming, ideas and price wise. As I said, if he is good.
