EDITOR’s rave & review
my own
words Pride should be fun, not just political. So we decided to do a special edition to inspire just that. OnQ is pleased to present PRIDEALICIOUS… together our community can work magic. We aren’t accomplishing this theme just through a fun carnival inspired cover but through events. We sat down and came up with ways to get people out of the house and out in numbers to celebrate themselves. We put together some amazing things then offered them to ALL, yes, ALL of the gay venues in Charlotte. The end result? Five great PRIDEALICIOUS parties at five Charlotte venues. To keep the spirit, we are featuring an all-inclusive tab•Q, letting you know what is going on during pride weekend in Charlotte - whether it be an official Pride event, unofficial Pride event, PRIDEALICIOUS or just your regular everyday favorites in the community. Can’t make it to Charlotte? Don’t fret! OnQ Carolina is not only bringing the PRIDEALICIOUS events to Columbia, Durham, and Atlanta this fall, but we are also sponsoring the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Festival and South Carolina Pride. For more information read future issues of OnQ Carolina or OnQcarolina.com. So, how is it OnQ Carolina is doing so much when others have taken a step back? I believe in the values bestowed to me by mother as a child and of course the business ethics that I grasped working as a Marketing Director for the Federal Government. My West Virginia roots remind me to address people as sir and ma’am, begin and end my conversations with a firm handshake and smile, don’t pick favorites amongst my friends, and when you ask people how they are doing, mean it. Listen, don’t’just hear their answer. Through my professional career I make sure I am thorough, put everything in writing for the clients protection as well as mine, offer superior product that beats the pricing of the competi-
tion and never promise anything that you can not 100% guarantee. With that all said, you now know our business model. These values and our out-of-thebox thinking my friends is what I believe makes all of the ideas of OnQ, (our publication, sponsorships, and events) all possible. As you can tell with this issue, my approach has been warm welcomed by many new businesses in our publication. I had the privilege of meeting and spending time with many of the busy folks in Charlotte and surrounding areas. I always go in with the intentions of selling an ad but never let that dominate the conversation. Sure, I can go in, do my pitch, grab a check and go, but, does that really build relationships? I want to know how they are doing, what’s new, and swap the recent funny stories. My goal isn’t to get advertisers to purchase gay media again. My goal is to put a warm face on gay media which has been missing. That my friends means just as much as the price. Alright now, it’s time to get out of here and go enjoy yourself! Get out of the house, forget about the recession, your fears of pride, and go celebrate… life! We know we will see you out in Charlotte this weekend! I also remind everyone to support and give a pat on the back to the folks who made the 2009 Pride Charlotte Festival at Gateway Village possible. Be sure to check out their Official Pride Guide as well for a true look into the Pride Charlotte line-up. Finally, OnQ Carolina and myself want to dedicate this issue to all Carolina organizations and persons who make living with Pride possible. To those who carry the messages on after the festivals are over, we salute you. Aloha! Jamie Seabolt was named a Top Five Gay Entreprenuer by Gay.com in 2004. PROUD. .
an activist’s
memoir
by Ryan Wilson, President SC Pride Movement Thumpa Thumpa, Thumpa Thumpa – The beat goes on, pulsing your chest as if your heart was beating along with the tempo of the music. “Proud. Proud. Proud.” Over and over the song sets up, repeating the cords, letting your mind set the stage. Can you see the colors and feel the power of the word? “What have you done today, to make you feel proud?” What a question! Where did it come from? The writers of the groundbreaking Showtime show “Queer as Folk” must have known they had chosen the right song to close their series finale with a bang. Heather Small knocks your socks off with her passion and the dance beat makes you wanna dance your now bare feet. How fitting to end a controversial show like Queer as Folk with the question: “What have you done today, to make you feel proud?” Their answer was seen every week for 5 years in the homes of millions of Americans. Telling the stories of Gays and Lesbians was certainly a great reason to be Proud.
who want to change the world are obnoxious and I wish they would just go away!”
•••••••••••••••••••• “You could free so many people, just say that prayer for freedom!” •••••••••••••••••••• Those are, as the song calls them my “reflections of the fears I’ve left behind.” “Now I step out of the ordinary,” I have chosen the spotlight. It is true I enjoy the attention and connections but the opportunities to serve the gay community as a voice have been the true reward for my work. Who will stand up for who we are, what we believe in, and the rights we deserve if we ourselves do not set the stage or pave the way to a brighter future?
This is the summary of my life. This is the theme song I live by. I am 25, a college graduate, a gay son, a person of faith, a friend, but most importantly, I am an activist. I care a lot about politics, and I WANT to make a difference.
Think of the colors of the flag that we claim as our symbol. Red tells of courage, courage to live, to live openly and honestly, to live life full of vibrant colors. Orange is the color of healing, healing the rifts that divide our nation and our families. Yellow is the power of the sun, never failing, never fading. Green represents the nature that surrounds us, binds us all together, feeds us, and gives us shade. Blue is harmony and equality, the tranquility of a smooth sea after a storm. Purple shows our spirit, an undying drive and energy that pushes us toward a better world.
I wasn’t always a social climber, looking to shake things up and stir the political pot. In fact, 8 years ago, when I came out as a Freshman at Clemson University, I was once quoted as firmly thinking that “all activists
“I can feel my soul ascending; I can feel my spirits rising!” What a powerful line. The battle for equality is not an easy fight. Gays and lesbians have to combat generations of biases that have informed religious
The song continues, “I look into the window of my mind, reflections of the fears I know I’ve left behind. I step out of the ordinary, I can feel my soul ascending, I’m on my way, can’t stop me now, and you can do the same, yeah!”

concerns, political policies, and social attitudes. We all have to do our part to stand out as examples of what true gay life is like, not what stereotypes and accepted norms tell the rest of the world to believe about us. Statistics show that the more GLBT persons a Heterosexual knows, the more likely they will be accepting of GLBT persons and the more likely they will vote for equality. My sister and her boyfriend are allies because I talk to them about who and I am and what matters to me. Hopefully the next time they vote, they will consider my life and my cares as their own. Have you talked to your family? Not everyone can be out. Not everyone can fight the fight, that’s why those of us who can, must unite. They have said for centuries that there is strength in numbers. ‘United we stand’ is a common battle cry, but unlike battles in warfare, we battle propaganda, religiously fueled political discrimination, and generations of Americans who have never been told our stories and our cares. They don’t know our worries and fears, our joys and our tears. The song says “You could free so many people, just say that prayer for freedom! So what have you done today to make you feel proud?” My suggestion, my call to you, is get involved in anything you can. Join local organizations, from the Business Guild or the Pride Movement to the HRC and other national causes. Come to area Prides, attend Town Hall meetings, or visit the centers for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, & Transgender Communities throughout the Carolinas. Learn about the Matthew Shepard act or read the news about GLBT issues. Visit SeansLastWish. com and take a moment of silence in memory of the late Sean Kennedy, whose life ended far too soon, because he stood up for who he was. Or start smaller, closer to home, tell just your friends and family about your issues, concerns, and dreams. As they say “Each One must Teach One.” Together, with your help, my work, our work, will not be in vain. I don’t sleep much but who can sleep while there is work to be done? Who can rest until we are all treated the way god created us, treated as equals in the country founded on principles of equality and freedom. I am proud to serve my community. This is what I have done today, and every day, to make me feel proud. Are you proud? PROUD! Ryan Wilson is an activist for GLBT rights and currently is serving his second term as President of the SC Pride Movement. Ryan resides in Columbia, SC with his partner and their loveable cats.

TRANSlations
buttons that labeled
boys by Janice Covington
Pride 2009, is a special time for me. Many things have changed in the last 40 years since the freedom protests of Stonewall and Compton’s Cafeteria. I look back now and reminisce about when I started my life in San Francisco in 1968 as a Transgender at the age of 21, living in the Castro district. During these days the world was not as friendly as it is today for Trans gender’s. I could not find a job for several months. There were no jobs because I was different, I was perceived as a freak. Eventually I found one as a room service waiter at the St. Francis Hotel in downtown. I had to work in DRAB [boy clothes] to survive. While remembering back when I would go out, I would walk down the street in The Tenderloin to go shopping or to the club. In those early times it was law that I
had to wear an identification button to prove I was a man. Sometimes, the police would stop me and ask for my ID, this was a common practice because they harassed us all the time. (yes in San Francisco) Sometimes they would take us to jail just for the hell of it. When we would go out to the clubs the police would pull raids. They would have a van outside to load all of us girls up in and treat us like animals. Their “reason” was to take us downtown to check for warrants, so they said. Then after keeping us there until sun up, we were turned loose like cats, out to the public so they could see us at our worst. To stare and laugh at us. I felt so judged and abused. After about a year my friends Soni Ray and Carmen Del Rio and I moved to Chicago. Chicago was like having ultimate freedom, I did not have to wear a button anymore. This was the good times! I loved Chi-

cago and still consider it home. I found a fabulous job pretty fast making mayonnaise. lol But as a boy, it was OKAY though. On weekends we would go clubbing. I loved the life, fun and the glamour. The first Pageant (if you could call it that lol) I was in, I won, WOW what a feeling! I was “Miss Chicago Night Life”. This to me was the highlight of my life. My dream had finally became a reality, I was free at last.
•••••••••••••••••••• Our community is our hope and our family. If I can make a small difference, then my life was well worth living. •••••••••••••••••••• After a while the clubbing and glamour dissipated. Men would talk to me and make promises of taking care of me. I was in great demand, if you know what I mean. I did things that even today I cannot speak of. I’m just glad AIDS was not around. The idea of me being kept did not go over well with my soul. One day I woke up and wanted to be free yet again. I packed and left my friends and the life as a girl, I threw it all away. I felt as if I were going no where. I had to go into the world and make a life for myself. More than just being a peace of meat for others to have their way with. I moved back to my home state of North Carolina, where I made my fortune. I started out as a construction laborer digging out footers, carrying bricks and lumber. I learned quickly. One day one of the supervisors noticed me. He asked me if I would like to become the Labor Foreman so I accepted. After a couple of years I became the superintendent. Again I watched and learned. I began to become, more and more independent. To make a long story short, I received a General Contractors License and became the CEO of the company. After a few years about the time I was 35, I started to come back to the Transgender community. I started dressing as “me” again. I had the feeling I had to come back. I had to do something for the transgirls. I felt as if I had abandoned them and felt extremely ashamed. That feeling still sticks with me today. My Girls, the Transgenders are my life, my family and my friends. I see many struggling, I help as many as I can and we are family. I have taken the group out many times and I picked up the tab. I help some with rent and food. What is mine is theirs. They call me Mom. I love it. I look forward to every chance that I can spend with them. I have been an activist for Transgender rights in the work place for many years. I feel regardless of what your gender is or what your sexual orientation is that a person can be a viable and useful asset in the work place. I feel that we have the ability to learn. We are just as well educated as any other person. We as Transgenders can be a valuable asset to any business. The bottom line is making the company successful. When I hear of a person coming out and loosing there job it saddens my heart. I think as a business owner that’s not smart. Who cares how we present ourselves as long as we are consistent with our presentation, then it should not make a difference. Transgenders, along with the rest of the GLBT community are smart people. We are educated, loyal and conscientious. ALL we need is a chance.

broke In short, BrokeStraightBoys.com is an adult website in which young straight men have gay sex for money. Not to worry, no models were hurt during the filming! Now that we have the obvious out of the way, let’s get into the faces and events making up the tour. Starting its second year, the models of the site will kick off at Pride Charlotte with exclusive Pridealicious events with OnQ Carolina Edition. Althought parts of last years tour touched through the Carolina’s this year will be the first time the Broke Straight Boys will be manning a pride booth. The tour organizer, Patrick Curran, says the models and he are thrilled to start their second tour in Charlotte and be a part of Pride. “Pride Charlotte is relatively new and small compared to other events throughout the nation and because of that, the stars of the site will have the opportunity to really get to spend some quality time with the fans”, Curran said. The tour brings the stars of the site out to the fans in their hometowns. During the first tour, just completed in Phoenix, the stars went from one end of the country to the other. Cities visited included over 100 events from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Portland, OR and Palm Springs, CA to Portland, ME. The size of the city various a lot. During the first tour, the troop hit big metropolis and some smaller towns. The events in Hickory, NC, Peoria, IL, and Williamsburg, VA were just as well attended and crazy as those in Chicago, Omaha, Boston and New York

City. There were even international events held in such places as Barcelona and London. The BrokeStraightBoys.com Tour includes various stops to events, clubs, and prides in cities all over. During these events, models mingle with the patrons and have the boys pass out gift bags with items promoting the organizations. The boys will bare their skin without breaking any local laws and keep it family friendly at pride festivities. Many times the models work with a ‘house drag queen’ or DJ.

Working as part of a Drag Queen’s show can be extremely fun. Johnny Mitchell, a popular model on the site and a great entertainer during the tours agrees. He remembers a recent gig in Chicago. “A Drag Queen armed with a bottle of whipped cream came after the other models and me. We always say it can’t get any crazier and then it most surely does”, Mitchell recalls. Although it various form event to event, the gift bags given out at the club events are worth about $80. Some of the typical items that are given out in the free gift bags include: copy of Just Us Boys magazine; a full length DVD of BrokeStraightBoys. com; and various ‘fun’ items such as measuring

At Pride events, the boys typically ‘work’ a booth and meet and greet the fans of the site. At these events, the models may sign autographs, pass out t-shirts and place temporary tattoos on patron’s arms if the guest so wishes. This will be the case in Charlotte. Over twenty models have gone on tour at one point or another. During the tour, many fans ask the models the same type of questions such as why do you do what you do? Derek Wing is a veteran of the tour, attending over 60 events during the tours first year, answers the question this way. “I can’t think of anything right off had that I had that I feel I would like to experience otherwise. Is there anything I did that I wish I hadn’t? No, I am a very open person and I live strongly by the saying ‘you live once, live it loud and live it proud’. You have to experience something to decide if you like it, but all in all, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I don’t live with regrets. There may be some things I didn’t enjoy as much as others, but I can’t say I would ever want to take any of my experiences back.” Besides the festival, the BrokeStraightBoys.com Tour will visit various clubs in Charlotte with OnQ Carolina Edition, as scheduled to the right.. The models scheduled to attend the Charlotte events include Johnny Mitchell, Derek Wing, Jayce Cowan, and Aleck Mason.
Please note that other entertainment will be going on at the Charlotte Eagle in conjunction with PRIDEALICIOUS. Jason Walker will be forming live as well as the GAYDAYS Tour featuring DJ Randy Bettis.

lmfao party rock
by DJ Middleground • djplay@ruOnQ.com www.ruOnQ.com/djmiddleground From LA to Miami the club scene just got a little more Dirty-Raunchy-Sexy thanks to Redfoo and SkyBlu the duo responsible for the electro-hop group LMFAO. If you have been in a club lately I’m sure you have heard there first single “I’m in Miami Bitch”. This non-stop party duo is making quite a name for themselves and fast. Recently dropping their first EP called “Party Rock” which is steadily climbing the Billboard top 100 and running a clothing line that’s selling out faster than they can produce these two seem to be fast tracked to success. Their second single “Shots” features Lil Jon and is a bouncy club banger all about getting crunk and having fun. My personal favorites are “La La La” and “Lil Hipster Girl” both have very catchy synth-pop melodies much like the new style of the Black Eyed Peas. Also check out David Rush’s new song “Shooting Star” which features LMFAO with Pitull and Kevin Rudolf.
FUN FACT
While searching for a name for his Electro/Hip-Hop group, Sky Blu decided to shoot an iChat message to his grandmother with the latest idea, seeking her opinion. The group’s Myspace page tells the rest. “Our new name is gonna be Sexy Dudes...what do you think of that?” Grandma Goodfoot replied, “LMFAO”.

DRAG UP THE DIRT • Howard Hung
calling all
kings Howard Hung, Mr. Pride Charlotte, MI 2009 by Bryan Lunsford Real Name: Heather Marie Brooks Hometown: San Francisco, California Currently Living: Charlotte, North Carolina Favorite Drink: Coke with no ice Favorite Color: Green Favorite Comfort Food: Mac N Cheese Favorite Broadway Show: Rent Favorite Board Game: Scrabble Favorite type of cereal: Raisin Bran Home Bar: The Hideaway in Rock Hill, SC Heather Marie Brooks was born in San Francisco and has since made a great name for herself in the GLBT community as a drag king. She recently obtained the title of Mr. Pride Charlotte MI 2009, however there is much more to her than just Howard Hung. Heather is one of those gals who lives by the saying “dance to your own beat” and strongly believes in laughter. She has even caught herself in MANY humiliating situations trying to make people laugh. To her, laughter is medicine. Another medicine for Heather is her strong relationship with God and has learned to stand strong and never let anyone sway her away. Through her religious relationship and practices she believes that she can make her way through any rough patch or rough situation that life throws in her path. With that said though, she also lives by the philosophy that you only have one life to live... so have fun! While Heather was growing up in the busy big city life, she always aspired to be a teacher, longing

to share her knowledge with others. While continuing to grow older, she realized that teachers weren’t just in the school systems, teachers were everywhere. Heather says, “I may not have a degree in education or work in a school, but I am still a teacher.” And she will continue to share what she has learned through her life experiences.
•••••••••••••••••••• Through her religious relationship and practices she believes that she can make her way through any rough patch or rough situation that life throws in her path. •••••••••••••••••••• A huge advocate of non-profit organizations, she is personally involved with an organization located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, called The Catawba Care Coalition. “It is an amazing HIV/AIDS advocacy center.” The Catawba Care Coalition offers free HIV testing and free and or reduced rate medical care and support for individuals living with HIV/ AIDS. You can access their website at http://www. catawbacare.org/. We asked Heather if her chosen lifestyle and nightlife had influenced her relationships at home or work in a positive or negative manner. She replied with a giggly “HAHAHA! You know it doesn’t at all, as it shouldn’t, but I was scared that when my family found out that I was a drag king they would flip out. Turned out they think it’s pretty awesome. But Granny still thinks that I do dance routines with my
a look into the life of heather marie brooks better known as Howard Hung, Mr. Pride Charlotte MI 2009 friends at night to make an extra buck. I just don’t think she would fully understand”. When quizzed by OnQ Carolina on whether she lives her everyday life as more of a female or male role she tells us “ I am a female, so I assume the female role. Believe it or not I really am just pretending to be a man. Although I am good at it (if I do say so myself), I do like doing girly things like getting my hair done and such. It’s pretty funny, I am just a plain Jane during the day”. Moving on to the topic of life lessons she tells us that although we are striving to make it much easier and safer as homosexuals, you have to still be careful. It is a very scary thing! “I have seen far to many young people exiled from their families because their families weren’t accepting of their sexuality”. Her advise to anyone coming out is to wait until you can “stand on your two feet with nothing that can be taken away from you”. Not only is Heather and Howard a special entertainer but she is now special in another way, being the first Drag King featured in OnQ Carolina’s Drag Up The Dirt. When asked how she felt about being the first she gleams “ I am totally honored! It is very exciting to see more and more kings making their way onto the stages around the area and now into the magazines”. To wrap up the interview, we asked Heather to share with us those special folks who have helped her in life and her drag career. She had a couple of ‘drag’ continues on page 25...
