day, September 18th. I made it quite clear from the beginning that we have no intentions of “undermining the work of”, “dogging”, or asking readers to “choose” when it comes to our competitors. Let me share another blurb from that blog; “Our community is so large and diverse that all 3 of our publications will be able to thrive and fill our individual niches in the Carolinas.” I still hold true to those words.

A vision first hit me in the Summer of 2006 for a new gay media network, but the foundation for the print portion of that new network didn’t blossom until June of this summer (shortly after moving back to the Carolinas). Once the goal was set, even through power and Internet outages, increased fuel costs, even with tropical storms and hurricanes at our door - OnQ Carolina Edition is now born. I want to thank everyone for viewing, downloading, printing, and sharing this new concept with your friends, loved ones, and perhaps a few businesses. We truly hope you enjoy our different approach to gay print media. We want to get the issues across, give credit both big and small when it’s due, and just have a gay ol’ time (yes, I just went there). Hopefully at this point you’ve glanced through the issue and have seen a glimpse of what we’re about. After you read this, I hope you go back through it again to really read the content. We may not be column after column filled with news bites, but we are full of original OnQ columns that are well wrote, informative, and provide a different glimpse into Carolina gay life. With that said, please don’t think I am taking aim at either LGBT newspaper serving the Carolinas. I encourage you to read back in our blog on myspace from Thurs-
6 OnQCarolinaEdition
Now, let me play off that concept for a moment - the idea of being united and supportive instead of cut-throat and separated. In our Random Rants, we had a person submit his thoughts (which is the whole point) and it got me thinking. I won’t go into detail, you can read it on page 35, but in short he asked “When did we as a community go from Gay, to GLBT, now to LGBT and everything in between? Why are we further dividing ourselves? That is a very good question. When did we segregate ourselves inside our own gay community? The HRC still refers to us as the GLBT community, but most other organizations over the past 5 years have switched to LGBT community. Why? Don’t all the other letters and the newly formed ‘labels’ still essentially fall under Gay? Send me your thoughts on this at my email address and of course submit your rants to randomrants@OnQcarolina.com Ugh, here I am in professional mode. So before I get back to something more relaxed, I have to stress... V O T E! All the problems in our society right now, from proposed gay marriage bans to the economic crisis, won’t change unless you get involved. I don’t care if you are an elephant, an ass, or anything in between - it’s the power of the people to make change. If you can’t afford to drive out for a martini, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. If you can’t stand the thought of having California’s triumphant gay marriage rights halted,
Shewww, now with that said - let’s talk about voting some more but on a more fun level. Gay.com is holding their Mr. Gay.com 2008 contest right now. Many of you know, Gay.com FINALLY went through a face lift and has made serious changes. So Mr. Gay.com is more important this year, as the top 15 get to be the new face(s) of Gay.com. Why am I telling you this? Because seven guys right here in North and South Carolina are semi-finalists! Let’s unite and show the gay nation why it’s better in the south by voting for our Carolina boys! Go to mrgaycom.com or our site for details! Oh, and if a Carolinan makes it to finals, OnQ will buy everyone a drink and send one lucky reader to San Francisco! Details are on Page 21. I wanna wrap this up by saying thank you from the bottom of my heart to John for standing next to me through this long setup process! You’ve definitly been a help. Until next time... Are You OnQ?

The brand new track from Britney Spears entitled “Womanizer”, was recently released on October 2nd and is already becoming a club favorite in larger metropolian gay clubs. The song, which Spears released to radio the week of September 22nd and then premiered on MTV’s hit show The Hills on Monday, September 29th, continues her descent into electro charged, post-disco energized gyration. “Womanizer” is the first official track from Spears’ forthcoming new album Circus, which is due in December. If you haven’t heard it on the radio yet (or you missed The Hills), the track is dominated by Britney’s voice and augmented by over-dubbed vocals that create a dizzying wash of super sweetened pop. It’s disposable, but infectious. Locally, Rihanna is still ruling the charts throughout the Carolinas. Natasha Bedingfield, Anastacia, and Jennifer Hudson are also playing quite frequently in our area clubs. Daniel by day is like most young gay men, but Seduction certainly steals the limelight in a show. This tiger lily blossoms on stage and does so with her own pizazz. Not concerned with what others think, Daniel represents himself and the community proudly. This Tennessee boy raised by a Southern Baptist minister, set his childhood aspirations of being an attorney into performing. When asked if his goals in life had changed, Daniel told us that even though “I didn’t become an attorney, I still made it. Now as an entertainer, I make a difference”. Asked if his lifestyle and profession dampers things back at home he is quick to point out the support he receives from his family. “I can truly say that I am blessed as they accept and support me just the way I am. It is hard for some people to separate the person from the persona but I am just a boy and Seduction is a profession”. This St. James strives to be as influential as others such as Jacqueline St. James, Dana St. James, and Raven St. James. When facing adversity from mainstream society, we ask how she deals with narrow minded straight men, who assume that gays are weak. “The answer to that is quite simple. I would talk to said ‘straight man’, and proceed to wax, shave, pluck, and duct tape him. Then I would girdle, bind, and put him in hose and heels. Finish him off with a wig, make-up, and a dress; then I would tell him to walk around naturally and look & carry himself like a woman. THEN I would ask him how weak he now thinks I am. LOL” Be sure to stop by and see Seduction St. James at Scandals in Asheville. While your there, don’t forget to bring her a shot of Patron (a straight shot of Tequila, sometimes with the worm). North Carolina Pride with the help of it’s 30 to 40 volunteers set out on the greens of Duke University to invoke change throughout the world; the same as it has for many years past. Each year through events such as these, Gay America has been able to slowly but steadily chip away at anti-movements that hold us back. With this clear message on the minds of thousands flocking Old West Durham, a definite energy could be felt as the voice of unity was heard. Whether you embraced the mile-long parade, the festival with nearly 200 vendors, or embarked on the fest ivies at Raleigh’s NightFest – “the state’s biggest feel-good event of the year” for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people and their straight allies and supporters, brought a sense of structure to a chaotic year. With a declining economy and a major political change about to take place in a few weeks, the clarity of a common message was refreshing. The message of pride in ourselves.

This is not a zero-sum game, where a Pride event in Charlotte detracts from an event elsewhere. The NC Pride Parade is one of the biggest and most fun gay events in the state”. So popular in fact, that supporters from as far as California were in attendance. Sam Samuels of Southern Pines brought his golf cart all the way to Durham to help the cause of Equality North Carolina. Countless others made the journey as well. NC PRIDE PARADE & FESTIVAL
It seems the more successful you are, the harder it can be to stay in shape. Many men trade the 6-pack abs for 6-figure salaries, but, YOU CAN have both. If you find yourself rambling excuses to your problem, take a moment to try some simple tips to get it back together.
“I am tied to my desk.”
If you think racing through the day and eating little keeps you toned, think again. You need to start your day smart, eating as soon as you get up so you can kick start that metabolism. According to Gene Erb, a registered dietitian, “Eighty percent of men take in so few calories in the first half of the day”. You need calories to make energy – energy burns fat and builds muscle. Eat small, but eat often. Try these simple tips;
Have breakfast, twice.
Men who have breakfast at the start of the day actually eat less calories throughout the whole day versus men who skip breakfast. Don’t have time? How about a quick breakfast bite at home while getting ready and a second breakfast bite once your at the office.
Snack.
A small snack of yogurt or a piece of fruit before lunch or dinner will keep you from gorging. Again, many small meals has a better impact then a few larger ones.
“I am too busy travelling to keep up with my workout.” The spice of life.
Variety in your gym routine is better for you. Take this as a chance to enhance your routine and to confuse the muscles for more effectiveness.
Hire a trainer.
Once you know when and where you are traveling, go online to nsca-lift.og and find a trainer to schedule a workout for you. That in-person motivation will keep you on track.

same at the terminal. Fast food is not the key.
Pack your bags with snacks too.
Grab nonperishable essentials like Odwalla, Organic Cereal Bars, fruit, or nuts. This will satisfy any craving before arriving at your destination and its a much healthier alternative.
Sandwiches can be a real hero.
If you must hit the food courts of the airport, keep in mind most terminals now have a sandwich shop like Subway or Quiznos. These offer a less guilty, healthier option that other airport selections.
“I am always entertaining clients or having lunch meetings.”
We all know to get ahead we have to do a little schmoozing. This doesn’t have to through a wrench in your fitness works however. Think outside of the lunch box and give these tips a try;
Start with protein and fiber.

High-fiber foods including fruits and vegetables will fill you up before the entrée comes. In short, you’ll be full, eat less, and have less calories to worry about later.
Drink before you dine.
Not the alcoholic kind either. Fill up on water prior to business party or lunch. You will feel full and end up eating less. Plus, drinking water 30 minutes before and after your meal, will create the right balance of nutrients for healthy digestion. Give these simple solutions a try to help survive the day without sacrificing your career or body. Just a couple changes will have a large impact and help you live that balanced life – career and health – that you’ve been working for all along.
Try something new.
Visiting Miami? Skip the treadmill and try water skiing. Vermont? How about mountain biking. Most hotels can prearrange thees activities for you that will enhance your at home workout routine. Besides, the extra fresh air would do you good.
“I am practically living & working in an airport.” Plan ahead.

If idiots could fly, this place would be an airport. God gave me everything I wanted; a great family, great friends, and made me a great lover!
ture men , I have one word for you. Wait. Why do people stereotype that all gay guys do
drugs? Need drugs... go ask the gay guy. Why not ask the straight guy?
if all you “boys next door” really lived next door, i’d move out of here When did GLBT become LGBT? I in a hurry.
remember when we were ALL gay. Now everyone has a title, it’s worse than a pageant. I’m not a stuck up seperationalist, just a realist, and I don’t want women telling me whats hot & what’s not.
what the hell is with boys that are “broken up” yet have their ex’s come to stay with them? I’ll solve that game real quick - I’ll just screw you both without the other knowing what’s going on.

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? NEED TO LET IT OUT? USE random_rants TO VENT SOME OF THAT STEAM.
i can’t go on to gay.com or manhunt without a 50-year old hitting on me. can’t a 23 year old go online to chat without grandpa trying to talk to me?!? to my favorite drag queen. i love you on stage, but, i don’t want to date you. if i wanted someone in a dress i would have stayed married to a woman. i never had gay friends until i moved to south carolina and boy is there ever more drama than i previously imagined.
when did small towns become more clicky than Oh, and Julian, you 30big cities? save those something cheerleader coaching whore. Who the clicks for the remote.
hell do you think you are pointing fingers and to all the ripped, hot, making fun of others you 20 something guys don’t know. Karma is a that laugh at us ma- bitch isn’t it?
