editor’s rave&review

I learned during our last issue that it is VERY difficult to be

If you’ve had the opportunity to read

previous issues of OnQ Carolina (and if you haven’t then browse our archives at www.OnQcarolina. com), you should know how important GREEN is to both myself and this publication. Not only will you find organic foods in my pantry & growing on the patio, energy saving bulbs in my home, and even the fact that I walk 15 blocks to my other job in an effort to curb my carbon foot print, you will also find that OnQ is VERY GREEN.

us meet our Green Initiatives. By choosing to receive OnQ Carolina through e-mail subscriptions, through our Myspace, our website, and even your OnQ Carolina Gayborhood profiles, you are eliminating TONS of greenhouse emissions. Now, if you choose to read us in print, you are choosing a publication made with 100% recycled paper content (which no other regional GLBT publication can claim) and you can feel comfortable knowing that even our delivery process uses LESS FUEL, LESS PACAKAGING, and is overall the BEST PRACTICES pos-

not only do we catch your eye but we are good for the soul too.

When I invested in the OnQ Gayborhood (www. ruOnQ.com), I made sure to find a hosting company who shares the same belief. In doing so, I found a company who is by far the greenest around (using up to 75% less energy on their equipment to run our websites than the computers you use at home and work). Sure it costs a little more, but it’s better for everyone. OnQ Carolina is equally as green through the help of a state-of-the-art press on the West Coast. Now it takes a little longer to get the finished product back East and the packaging (yet again very green) may not be the prettiest but the end result is Earth friendly. We even eliminate a lot of potential waste through our distribution process.. Now with all these steps to help the planet and our community you’d think I would be all smiles. Well, how quickly I learned during our last issue that it is VERY difficult to be GREEN and to DISTRIBUTE on time.

Lessons learned and with those first distribution bugs behind us, we are now on track to continue our Earth friendly practices, continue to ship with very little packaging, and also guarantee on-time delivery to our nearly 120 distribution points. Yes, you heard me right. OnQ Carolina already reaches more distribution points in PRINT then most GLBT publications in the Southeast. Add in our already large Electronic distribution (thanks to you), we are by far the largest distributing gay publication in the region. And I want to thank you again. Yes, you. The reader. You have played such a large role in helping

sible. See, not only do we catch your eye but we are good for the soul too. Now that you are full of warm fuzzies, let me remind people that Pride 2009 is kicking off soon. Triad Pride (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point) gets the Carolina Pride season going on May 27th through May 31st. Several events are scheduled throughout the area with Jerry Halliday and Sista Girl performing live. Learn more about all the events at www.triadpride.com and be sure to go support all the hard working folks that make it possible While in the area, be sure to pick up our latest OnQ Carolina Edition in print at our Triad area distribution points. Also around the corner is Wilmington Pride (www. outwilmington.com) June 10th through the 14th with RuPaul headlining festivities. Wilmington Pride is honoring the history and 40th anniversary of The Stonewall Riots. Passes for the 5 day event range from $65 to $150. Boone Pride (www.boonepride.org) gets under way from June 12th through the 14th. With this year’s theme, “Your Rights, Our Rights, Human Rights,” they invite everyone in the High Country to help celebrate, unite, and support the local GLBTIQ community. Tickets are on sale for $10 and are good for entrance to all of this year’s Pride events. Although I always have more to say, I want to wrap this up. Take the time to go green, get involved in pride, and of course take some advice from our travel highlights on page 8 of this issue. ALOHA!

JESSICA MAUBOY

At a mere 19 years of age Jessica Mauboy is already brimming with R&B superstar promise with constant comparisons to Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls). Her debut CD entitled “Been Waiting” dominating the charts in Australia and winning the “Best Aussie Act” award at the 2009 MTV awards. I think we can expect big things to come from young soulstress. Her first single “Running Back” features U.S. platinum recording artist Flo Rida. “Running Back” is addictive with its dark melodic harmony and lyrics dealing with the difficulties on moving on from a bad relationship. Her second single “Been Waiting” has more of an early Mary J. Blige essence. A sophisticated upbeat tone, this song is about the yearning to cross that line from friends to lovers. Jessica’s third single “Burn” is a club banger about a painful break-up. With lyrics like “you’re twisted if you think that you can control me your actions are about to leave you sad and lonely” make this track bittersweet.

Josue Andino ruOnQ.com/kaze

Josue (or Kaze as he prefers to be called) is a 20 year old Northern transplant coming from an Italian/Latino family. Like most guys his age he is trying to figure out where he stands in this big world. An outgoing kind of person, Kaze loves to meet new people, making sure all have a great time. He lives by the motto: “If you are not laughing then you are not living”. He aspires to make people (and himself) laugh and smile. Most of his friends, whether from the past or the present have known him as a “goof nut”, gaining that title because he’s silly and always laughing. Some of his most enjoyed hobbies are dancing, singing, playing the piano, watching a great movie with a man by his side, and taking walks in the rain. Although walking in a storm is not encouraged Kaze doesn’t care. He does his deepest thinking in the rain. It helps to focus his thoughts. One of Kaze’s passions is travel. He loves to immerse himself into the different cultures of the world and that is exactly what he plans on doing. Traveling the world and learning as much as he can; Taking bits and pieces from what he’s gathered, putting his own spin on things, and fitting them into his own life. Overall he is a well-rounded guy with two feet planted firmly on the ground. He has a mind for great things and a comical nature he puts to good use everyday. He knows how important spending his time wisely is and he takes nothing for granted. Kaze intends on living, laughing, and loving everyday to the fullest. “One should educate themselves before they judge”. read more on KAZE, page 10

destination:maui

& other vacation destinations for gay & lesbian adventure

OnQ Carolina had the opportunity to travel to the Island

of Maui, Hawai’i for an inside look at island living as shown to us by Randall Baybayan, Mr.Gay.com Muscle Stud 2008 Finalist. From black sands to the finest cuisine, we got an indepth look at life as a gay local. So sit back, relax, and lock your in it’s upright postion because OnQ Carolina is landing in Maui!

A Little History & Geography • Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands and has experienced rapid population growth in recent years with the town of Kīhei being one of the most rapidly growing towns in the United States. Although over 140,000 people now call the island home, only the West and South sides of the islands are commercialized. The remaining parts of the island is still home to some of the most lush rainforests in the world (as seen in Jurassic Park). Maui is a leading whale-watching center in the Hawaiian Islands due to Humpback whales wintering in the sheltered Au’au Channel between the islands of Maui county. The whales migrate approximately 3,500 miles from Alaskan waters each autumn and spend the northern hemisphere winter months mating and birthing in the warm waters off Maui. Also in these same waters you can find the coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Lahaina (or Old Lahaina Town) is the most popular of tourist destinations, starting out as a major whaling port in the 1800’s. Lahaina was also the “Royal Capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom” before Hawaii’s annexation by the United States. The capital of course was then moved to Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Gay Nightlife • Although Maui has no official gay & lesbian bar or club, several venues host a GLBT night each week. These venues can be found sprinkled through Lahaina on the West side of Maui and also Kihei (the most populous of gay locals) on the South side. The best place to go? ULTRAFAB Saturday Night. This restaurant by day spins into a shoulder-to-shoulder gay mecca after 10pm on Saturday Nights. Cover is only $5 and the drinks are strong. Don’t be surprised when you are charged Sales Tax on your Alcohol, but rest assured, credit cards are accepted. ULTRAFAB Saturday Night is located at Gian Don’s in Kihei at 1445 S. Kihei Road.

Dinner and A Luau • Any Maui vacation should include at least one Maui luau. There are many different Maui luaus, each aimed at a different type of experience. If you are interested in a small intimate luau with premium service, the Feast at Lele (www.feastoflele.com) is your best bet. Not only is this Luau gay-friendly but offers four different Polynesian cuisine experiences at one luau. Prices are roughly $100 per person with tip included (but it also offers an open bar). While there be sure to say Aloha to Randall, Mr.Gay.com Muscle Stud 2008 Finalist. Feast of Lele is located at 505 Front St in Lahaina on the West side of the island. Want to skip the grass skirts and experience other dining spots? Lahaina is your best bet. You can stop in the usual tourist spots such as Hard Rock

Life is a Beach • From surfing to snorkeling, everything can be done on the beaches of Maui. Want to go out of your normal comfort zone? Visit Little Beach (known as the Nude Beach). It’s a once in a lifetime experience and can often serve as a quick ego boost. Also check out the ripped surfers on the beaches of Kihei on the south side of the island. No matter which beach you choose you will notice the abundance of coral and lava rock. Although beautiful, DO NOT TAKE IT. It is legend that the Curse of Pele follows those who take these pieces of the island outside of it’s natural setting.

Traveling to and on the Island • The best way to get there is on US Airways (www.usairways.com) with fares lower then you’d think. The average round trip ticket out of Charlotte can go as low as $600. Our recommendation for getting there? AIRLINE MILES! US Airways offers Mileage Savers throughout the year and can get you there for only 35,000 miles. Once on the island, you can walk to many destinations if staying in Lahaina or K’annapali. The Maui transit system also runs to all the major towns for only $1 per trip. If you want to take in the breathtaking views and rainforests of Hana a car rental is a must.

in Maui as experienced by our

Executive Editor Here are the seven things you must do on any Maui getaway, in no particular order, as shared with us by our Executive Editor on his recent Hawaiian holiday.

01. Luau! Luau! Luau!

This by far had to be my favorite yet the most simple thing I did on this trip. This is true Hawai’i.

02. Walking Old Lahaina Town There is a lot of history, shops, and food to be seen. A definite must!

03. Snorkeling Molokini Crater If you are a novice like me this is the best place to start. Not only is it breathtaking but the reefs are shielded from strong currents.

04. Little Beach (The Nude Beach) It’s not what you think, something worth doing just to say you did it.

05. Rainforests in Hana

Breathtaking! Although some of the best rainforest is only accessible by helicopter.

06. Biking down Haleakala

Haleakala’s peak literally has you above the clouds.

07. Surfing by Kihei

Either as a surfer or onlooker, it is an experience to have!

How do you handle being an openly gay individual against adversity you may meet? I learned to embrace my sexuality long time ago. Like the saying go’s “I picked out my outfit and came out of the closet”. If people can’t see me for who I am then they don’t need to know me at all.

What’s your favorite food to splurge on? Anything Mediterranean.
