OSMA INDUSTRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Board Meeting – March 10-11 The Board met by conference call and shared items on District Programs, Sheep Days, Trade Shows, Predation, working relationships with Industry Stakeholders, uses of Director grants and reasons for fewer animals going to slaughter than in previous years. Many committee conference calls will be held in preparation for the face-to-face Board meeting in April.

OSMA’s 25TH ANNIVERSARY This year marks The Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency's 25th Anniversary Year. We will be highlighting all four Ontario Sheep News throughout this year with articles and reminisces of the past. We will also be focusing on the event at our Annual General Meeting in October. If you have any information or memories you would like to share, please contact us at the office by email general@ontariosheep.org or calling the office at 519836-0043 Ext. 27.

Fifteen committee members met on March 2 to discuss “Traceability – Farm to Fork and Here To Stay”. Committee members provided many ideas for OSMA and the industry to consider over the next two years in producer awareness and education and buy in from all Industry Stakeholders. After the Board receives the report there will be more communications to all stakeholders.

BUSINESS RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OSMA is working with its partners in the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Coalition to inform MPP’s and MP’s of the need for a revised Agri Stability Program and assistance for commodities in financial need. Creating value is important to everyone – producers, processors, consumers, …and staff working for the dynamic Ontario Sheep Industry. Ideas or testimonials from producers relayed to staff on ways producers have made more profit help staff do their jobs in a more “complete service” way.

UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION It is important for Ontario Sheep to have current contact information for all sheep producers in order to keep you up to date on current events. There are some producers registered with OS without even a phone number. Please let us know when you move or change your contact information. This would include your complete address including lot/conc. and/or fire number and street name; Phone number, and your email address. Please contact us by calling 519-836-0043 or emailing: admin@ontariosheep.org

With Easter coming up this weekend, Lamb is being highlighted in many newspapers. Below is a recipe found in the Trail Daily Times on March 31, 2010 highlighting this Homegrown recipe

Boneless stuffed leg of lamb Perfect to serve during Easter celebrations A long time favourite for Easter dinner, fresh lamb is infused with fragrant rosemary and thyme before being stuffed with a palate-pleasing mixture of garlic, sausage and lightly toasted pine nuts. Serve with crisp leafy greens and warm crusty bread Boneless Leg of Lamb 1 deboned leg of lamb (about 1.5 kg/3 lb) Marinade 30 ml (2 tbsp) olive oil 2 bay leaves 3 sprigs rosemary 4 sprigs thyme 5 ml (1 tsp) each sea salt and fresh cracked pepper Stuffing 15 ml (1 tbsp) olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 l (4 cups) spinach 2 lamb sausages, casings removed 2 ml (1/2 tsp) each sea salt and fresh cracked pepper 50 ml (1/4) cup toasted pine nuts In a large resealable bag, combine lamb, olive oil, bay leaves, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper. Refrigerate and let sit for at least 1 hour or up to 2 days. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high. Add onion and cook until tender and brown, about 7 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in spinach and remove from heat. Cover and let sit for 5 minutes or until spinach has wilted. Let cool completely. Break up lamb sausage and stir into spinach mixture just until combined. Stir in salt. pepper and pine nuts. This recipe can be prepared, up to this point, one day ahead. Arrange lamb leg on a clean surface with short end facing you. Spread stuffing over lamb and roll up to enclose stuffing. Tie to secure and place in a roasting pan. Roast in a 190 C (375 F) oven until medium rare, about 90 minutes. Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing. Makes 8 to 10 servings. Nutritional information per serving: 270 calories; 32 g protein; 14 g total fat (5 g saturated fat); 2 g carbohydrates; 1 g fibre; 105 mg cholesterol; 90 mg sodium.
