Safe summer driving begins here Even if you’re the safest driver on the road, those around you might not be. So, keep these tips in mind when you’re the driver and the passenger: • Wear your seatbelt. Almost 40 percent of all vehicle occupants killed are not wearing a seatbelt. • Slow down. Excessive speed is a contributing factor in 20 percent of occupant fatalities. • Remember to share the road. In the summer months, there’s more traffic, pedestrians, trucks, bicycles and motorcycles on the road. • Drive defensively, not aggressively. • Maintain your vehicle with regular maintenance check-ups.

• Give your vehicle a thorough cleaning to remove salt and sand accumulated over winter. Clean under the hood, shampoo the engine and wheel wells. Wax or polish your vehicle at least twice a year to preserve its paint.
• Change your oil every 5,000 km or 3 months (whichever comes first) and keep fluids like brake, coolant and windshield washer, topped up. If the vehicle is driven mostly on the highway, extend the oil replacement interval to 8,000 km.

Air Filter Replace when dirty or as part of a tune-up

Antifreeze Checking coolant level.
Battery Have the battery checked with every oil change.
Belts Replace worn, glazed or frayed belts.
Brake Fluid Fill to mark on reservoir. Do not overfill.
Engine Oil Remove the dipstick and wipe clean. Insert it fully and remove it again. If it is low, add oil.
Exhaust Any loud exhaust noise may indicate a leak in the system. Hoses Aging coolant hoses need extra care. Lights Have someone check that your head lamps and turn signals are clean and working.
Oil Filter Change oil every 5,000 km or 3 months, whichever comes first.
Power Steering Fluid If the level is down, it may be an indication of a leak in the system.
Shock Absorbers Worn or leaking shocks should be replaced, always in pairs. Tires Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure.
Transmission Fluid Check monthly or if you notice any puddles underneath the car.
Washer Fluid Keep windshield washer fluid reservoir full. Wiper Blades Inspect windshield wiper blades every 3 months. Replace when they’re torn or leaving streaks on the windshield. 14
