For me, hospitality industry is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. You must have certainly talents and be flexible in all regards. The passion to work with people, meet different nationalities and provide unparalleled services to people from all over the world was always an fascinating thought. Hence I started my career in a resort just when the Maldives started to become an international holiday destination. With the opening of One&Only Reethi Rah, the industry changed in the Maldives entirely and I wanted to be part of that progress. BEING A CONCIERGE AT ONE&ONLY REETHI RAH

A Concierge is someone who knows the island inside and out with all options available and tailours his/her recommendations according to the guests’ needs, expressed and unexpressed wishes of his/her guests. I am part of the

One&Only Reethi Rah team since its very first day. Over the past 10 years with the Resort, I have learned how to make every guest’s experience unique and to ensure that my guests’ expressed and unexpressed wishes are all looked after. We pay great attention to my guests on their arrival to find out whether they wish to hide away and quietly relax or have an itinerary full of excitement and fun. For each and every arrival, we promise our guests that we will be looking after them and we ensure that they will have a memorable time with us. THE MOST INTERESTING DAY

to celebrate a birthday night, but knowing the importance of this special day, the guest allowed me to be creative and arrange an event, on my own, which went far beyond of anything they could have imagined. Hence a tent was built, food menus were discussed with the Executive Chef, service team were briefed prior to event, gardeners and florists had to retouch the area and deliver flower arrangements, engineering colleagues to set up the lights and events team to coordinate the live entertainment. All-in-all, we had built a restaurant in a day for just one special evening. GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND EVERY SINGLE GUEST EXPERIENCE

Being recognised as the Best Butler in Asia by Linara Travels was one of the highlights in my career. It’s a joy for me to enrich the life of people all over the world and to be part of their amazing experiences and everlasting memories. At One&Only Reethi Rah, things can be done which no other Resort can accommodate simply because of the size of the island and available facilities. Moreover, the support of 850+ incredible colleagues keeps us running. For the food lovers, we have unveiled a new dining experience at Rah Bar. Rabarbaro refines the genuine, simple Italian cuisine on our island. Here you will see Chef Andrea and his team live in action while preparing your dish. Select from fresh ingredients and create your own antipasti, pasta, pizza or second piatti. The spectacular ocean view combined with an espresso or ice-cold limoncello at the end of your meal will definitely give you a lingering flavour of Italy in your mouth. Italian food is more than about pizza and pasta. The country’s culinary history is much more diverse and is reflected in the great variety of its regional cuisines. Some dishes and ingredients have their roots in the ancient days of Italy, while others were brought from other countries. Step 1 / Up your H2O – we all know drinking more water is great for your keeping your skin looking healthy, but it’s also vital for flushing out toxins and keeping your body functioning, so be sure to stay hydrated. If you find water a little dull, reach for fruit-infused water or herbal teas – anything (other than alcohol) will help. Step 2 / Hit the sack – it may be easy for chores or TV programmes to get in the way, but getting plenty of sleep is a great way of feeling refreshed and letting your body recuperate and relieve stress. I advocate going to bed at 10pm and getting at least 8 hours. If you struggle with drifting off, why not try a warm and relaxing bath completed with our sleep-inducing Soothing Bath Oil and Candle? Renee Watson is the Director of Conscious Movement Education and Co-Founder of The Source. Renee has been teaching Pilates since 1998 and has studied with numerous schools such as BASI, Stott Pilates, Body Control Pilates, and Dianne Miller. She has also expanded her horizons through Gyrotonic / Gyrokinesis, Massage therapy, Dorn Method, Yoga, Kinetic Precision, and most recently, Lynotherapy. Along with her dance background, Renee integrates this knowledge to offer an evolved and evolving understanding of Pilates and movement. Although Renee travels the world to offer CME courses and workshops, she feels fortunate to have found a balance between living with her husband and children on beautiful Lake Malawi and working at the serene space that is The Source.

One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives introduced the Spa and Fitness Visiting Practitioners programme to differentiate us from the other resorts in the Maldives. This program provides our guests with an opportunity to be introduced to a specialised field of spa/fitness. These practitioners are in industry leaders coming from all over the world and majority of them return to the Resort due to the popularity of the experiences. At the initial stage, it was not a fixed program – however, as we expanded our spa and fitness offerings, we were able to create a network amongst the spa and fitness specialists around the world, allowing us to invite many different wellness experts. One&Only Reethi Rah’s visiting practitioner programme has become popular among the guests and many of our guests are returning for certain practitioners’ experiences.

Here at One&Only Reethi Rah, we are very fortunate to have some beautiful reefs very close to our island. A favourite reef among our guests and staff is “Turtle Reef ”, located next to Makunudhu island and just a 25 minute dhoni ride from Reethi Rah. Not only is this reef teeming with a wide diversity of fish and corals, it is also one of the best reefs in the Maldives for snorkeling with the critically endangered Hawksbill turtles. Our Marine Biologist has been keeping track of turtle sightings at Turtle Reef for the past 4 years. During this time we have identified 96 different individuals on the reef. Every sea turtle has a unique pattern of scales on the side of their face, like a fingerprint, which

can be used to identify them and helps to gather information on population numbers. Some of the same individuals are regularly sighted at Turtle Reef, suggesting that this reef is an important habitat for a community of Hawksbill turtles. Despite their protection under international agreements and many national laws, Hawksbill Turtles (and all other species of sea turtles) are increasingly under threat. Their status as critically endangered is due to a range of human-related threats, including wildlife trade (souvenirs, shell products); habitat loss and degradation; collection of eggs and meat for consumption; incidental capture (bycatch); climate change and pollution.

Please help us to protect our sea turtles and our marine life by: • Not purchasing any souvenirs or products made from sea turtles • Purchasing seafood only sourced from sustainable fishing methods • Reducing your use of plastic, which is littering our oceans and being consumed by a range of marine animals including sea turtles. JAZZ

Meet ‘Jazz’, resident female Hawksbill turtle who has been regularly sighted at Turtle Reef since April 2012. Jazz is the largest turtle living on this reef, and is usually seen feeding in a shallow part of the top reef. For a few months of the year, Jazz is not sighted, then she will reappear again! Where does she go?! Does she migrate to her breeding grounds to nest or is she just spending time at another reef? We would love to know!

MARVIN

‘Marvin’ is our resident male Hawksbill who calls Turtle Reef home. He is clearly identified as a male due to the presence of his “tail”. Only 4 different males have been documented on the reef, and Marvin is the only one regularly sighted. This suggests that Marvin is a dominant male and defends Turtle Reef as his territory! Similarly to Jazz, Marvin also seems to disappear from Turtle Reef for a few months of the year. We are always excited to see him upon his return, and wish we knew what he had been up to during his absence.

Over the past few months we have had a number of new juvenile Hawksbills arriving to Turtle Reef, and they seem to like it there! We like to give all of our resident turtles a name, because that gives us a more personal connection to each turtle and allows us to tell the story of each individual. We currently have 3 regular nameless juveniles and we would love if you could help us think of some names! Here are the pictures of the 3 juveniles, and their facial identification shots. If you think you have a good name for any of these little guys, we would love to know.

Cape Town (Kaapstad in Afrikaans and Ikapa in Xhosa), is a modern city with a fascinating history. Known as the Mother City because it was the first to emerge in South Africa, the city owes its multicultural personality to a diverse range of people and events, from the indigenous Khoi and San peoples to local African tribes, from the European explorers to slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Mozambique, and from apartheid to democratic freedoms. A meeting point of many cultures, the result is a cosmopolitan city with a contemporary and eclectic vibe. So dynamic is the Cape Town of today, in 2014 it was awarded World Design Capital and named the best place in the world to visit by both The New York Times and The Telegraph. Known history begins with rock art that dates back 27,000 years, traced to the Khoisan people who lived in sight of Table Mountain—itself one of the oldest mountains on earth at eight million years old. The area’s first written recordings don’t appear until the 1400s, when Portuguese explorers Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama chronicled their sightings of the Cape of Good Hope. By the late 16th century French, Danish, Dutch and English ships made Table Bay a regular stop en route to the Indies, with Sir Francis Drake proclaiming in 1580, “This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth.” It was the establishment of the Dutch East India Company by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 that eventually led to the

arrival of slaves to support labor needs in the growing settlement. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Netherlands and Britain fought for control of South Africa, with Britain ultimately prevailing to form the multicultural Union of South Africa (later the Republic of South Africa) in 1910, with Cape Town as its capital. Running on a platform of apartheid, the National Party came into power in the mid-1900s prompting several decades of political and humanitarian strife. Cape Town was home to many leaders of the anti-apartheid movement, and in one of the most famous moments marking the end of apartheid, Nelson Mandela made his first public speech from the balcony of Cape Town City Hall just hours after being released from prison. Today, with 11 official languages, Cape Town proudly embraces its multicultural diversity with everything from cutting-edge street art to world-class cuisine, and from the brightly coloured facades of the Bo-Kaap to the Afro-chic décor of trendy cafés and bars.
