Engineering and science excellence for 14-19 year olds in Birmingham
A
ston University Engineering Academy (AUEA) is a University Technical College for 14-19 year olds and is looking for budding young Engineers. AUEA is committed to science and engineering excellence, with strong links to local and national industrial partners such as EoN, National Grid, Rolls Royce and Goodrich. Places are available for young people to join in Year 10 and Year 12 and build a highly rewarding career for themselves. Despite the difficult economic climate there remains a significant shortage of science and engineering skilled young people. This means there are still loads of career opportunities available, in lots of different careers paths, and the earning potential for young people like you is huge. Principal Designate Lee Kilgour explains why the perfect time to study Engineering at AUEA is now: “Maths and Science will be applied to the Engineering curriculum to make learning exciting, engaging and relevant. Working with our industrial partners on real engineering projects is a normal part of the working day at AUEA helping our students to develop a passion and enthusiasm for all things engineering.” It’s not a one size fits all approach, the academy tailors programmes for students at different levels of study. At 14, all students follow courses in Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Modern Language (French) and engineering courses which include, City and Guilds L2 Engineering Certificate, and Electronic systems and control. This helps to develop skills in all areas and keeps students future career options open too. Things become more specialised as students progress. At 16, students can opt to follow a science A level pathway, a technical pathway or an Apprenticeship route. All pathways will have a unique University Technical College approach and are a great ‘next step’ on the Engineering careers ladder.
This simple curriculum overview shows all of the skills and expertise AUEA develops in every student:

Working WiTh...
AUEA run Partnership Learning Plans with major employers, which are designed to excite and engage students with engineering and science. The unique Partnership Learning Plan with National Grid aims to: • Develop a long term sustainable partnership which engages young people with power engineering; • Contextualise the science and engineering subjects at AUEA; • Promote the high standard of science and engineering undertaken by National Grid; • Provide possible progression routes into careers with power engineering, University and National Grid. Working with National Grid helps give AUEA students valuable experience for the future. Students get to learn about engineering maintenance on a BIG scale, with such a prestigious employer. Just some of the learning activities include: • The fantastic opportunity to visit an electricity substation to see how maintenance is carried out on large scale equipment including the use of thermal imaging to monitor the condition of high voltage connections. • The chance to spend time in the workshop joining and testing electrical wiring takes on a totally new experience when the wires are overhead power cables! • Exploring the issues around connecting generation sources to customers through a practical project to connect a wind turbine to a simulated load. Students will experience not just the technical challenges, but also the real-world considerations of how infrastructure impacts landowners and the public.
CASE STUDY Aminah Bibi: Engineering my future Aminah Bibi is 16 years old and has recently finished her GCSEs at Hall Green School, Birmingham. She has always enjoyed Science, Mathematics and Design, so last year she began to explore her options for further study in these areas. Aminah says “Physics is my favourite subject because it is the science of ‘why’ and it dares to go where no other science has gone before. As I looked into options of where I could use Physics, Engineering kept coming up.” Aminah did not know much about engineering so she did her research, attended careers events and spoke to advisors. Aminah attended a presentation by Aston University Engineering Academy and was really excited to learn about the wide diversity of engineering sectors and potential careers. “I also learnt that there are low numbers of female engineers in the UK, and that companies are desperately trying to change this. The more I researched, the more I realised that I wanted to study Engineering as it incorporates Mathematics, Science and Design.” Aminah explains why she chose Aston: “I chose to apply to Aston University Engineering Academy because it has new state of the art; engineering workshops, robotics, CAD, and university standard Science laboratories, which are directly linked with industry. I am looking forward to studying A level Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, and going on to study Engineering at University. My aim is to become an engineer working in developing countries solving humanitarian problems using engineering solutions.”
