MONEY MATTERS When it comes to deciding on a training provider, Apprenticeship, job or college course, there are some things you might not have considered, like how much it will cost to get there each day. Here’s some information to help...

Travel costs Travel isn’t cheap, especially when you have to buy a roundtrip ticket to your college or training provider everyday. And the further from home you go, the more expensive it gets. The good news is that there’s help available. If you’re between 16 and 18 (or continuing a course you started before your 19th birthday), your local authority may be able to help you with the cost of transportation to your college or sixth form. The type of help you can get depends on where you live - each local authority decides what’s suitable for the area. They may look at your family’s income, judge how far you live from the nearest college where your course is available, and other factors. Visit your local council website for more information (they’re listed on our ‘useful links’ pages).

Something to think about...

Usually, the help with transportation costs is only for travel within your local council. The exception is if there isn’t a suitable course in your area. If you want to attend a college farther away when you could easily go nearby, you’ll probably have to foot your own travel bill. And that can add up.

08

Specialist cour ses

If you want to do a specialist course that’s not available in your loc al area, there are two possible ways to get help with the extra costs of studying away from home: • Choose a colle ge that offers reside ntial bursaries for certain course s – there are close to 50 specialist resident ial centres across the country that offer extra he lp for students wh o want to study a particular course that isn’t off ered in their local area. These centres tend to sp ecialise in agriculture, art an d design courses. You have to apply directly to th e college for finan cial help. If you’re thinking of choosing a course at a specialist college, then you should start apply ing in the Autumn term of Ye ar 11. • The Residentia l Support Scheme – if the specialist college you want to go to isn’t part of the resident ial bursary schem e, don’t worry – you can sti ll apply for the Re sidential Support Scheme, which helps pay for term time accommodation if your college is too far away for you to travel there from home.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships involve working for an employer while studying for a qualification part time with a training provider or college (usually on day release). One of the great things about Apprenticeships is that you don’t have to pay for the training. As long as you’re between 16 and 18, your studies are 100% paid for by the government. The new National Minimum Wage means that all apprentices will be paid at least £2.50/hour. However, as your skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – research shows that apprentices usually take home £170 a week.

Something to think about...

Apprentices aren’t eligible for help with transport costs, so this is definitely something to consider when choosing an Apprenticeship. You’ll have to get to both your employer and your place of study.

Young parents

Discretionary Support Funds These funds help anyon e over 16 who has trouble meeting the costs of further education at college or sixth form. They’re available through the col lege or school sixth form and can be use d for travel costs, course-related eq uipment or accommodation costs. Schools and colleges set their own criteria, which means the amou nts available may differ between institution s. If you qualify, the funding could be a direct payment to you or a payment to som eone else on your behalf. The payment cou ld be a loan that you’ll have to pay back, or a grant, which you won’t.

“More employers should offer apprenticeships” says Nikky Nikky Sodiq currently works and studies at Lambeth College, where she is employed as a Nursery Officer whilst she completes a level 2 Children’s and Young Person’s Apprenticeship. Nikky says: “Working towards an Apprenticeship is ideal for me. I learn best by having a go at doing something myself. An Apprenticeship offers you a grea t opportunity to gain experience as you learn on the job. I was very shy when I first started but my colleagues are so supportive, which has helped to boost my confidence. I also have lots of supp ort with my studies and I have enough time to complete all my course work as well as my daily duties in the nursery. I work 4 days a week 9-5 and I go to college 1 day a week. The best part of this Apprenticeship is the interaction with children. I’m gaining lots of wor k experience as well as learning the theory I need to be a successful nursery worker. When I finish this course I hope to continue studying and progress onto Level 3 at Lambeth College. Once I finish my qualifications, I wou ld like to get a job in a nursery or playgroup and eventually become a child psychologist. More employers should offer App renticeships as they are a great way to study and to gain experience at the same time. I’ve already reco mmended apprenticeships to my younger siste rs!” “Thank you to Lambeth College for giving me the chance to complete an Apprentices hip.” For more information call 020 7501 5313 or visit www.lambethcollege.ac.uk

LIFE STORIES Sunny’s on the road to becoming a master technician Sabawoon Ghalgai (Sunny) Studying: Level 3 Motor Vehicle Repair and Maintenance – Apprenticeship NVQ ; Level 3, Technical Certificate Level 3, & Key Skills @ L2. in Application of Number and Communication I have always loved cars and have an interest in how to fix them. Through a friend, I found a job at Speedway Autocentre in Hampstead, NW3. After working there for around 6 months, my employer suggested I may like to become an Apprentice as he had previously done. Speedway then contacted North London Garages GTA Ltd and I was invited to attend the training centre at Ponders End for an initial assessment and interview. North London Garages also help find employment for young people who want a career as vehicle mechanics or vehicle body repairers. Having been accepted onto the Apprenticeship programme, I also enrolled onto an ESOL course at a local college to help improve my written and verbal English. I currently speak 6 languages and have often used these skills when dealing with customers at the workplace. I have been selected 3 times as Employee of the Month by Speedway. We work on a selection of vehicles, including BMW, Bentley, Lamborghinis and carry out all types of servicing and repairs on brakes, wheel alignment, head gasket, clutches, suspension, transmission, engine, fuel & tyres. Over the last 4 years I have bought all my own tools. I was chosen for a TV advertisement with Alan Sugar throughout February 2009 to represent the National Apprenticeships week. Later in 2009 I passed my driving test and now own a car. I am also rebuilding a car from scrap which I have almost completed. I expect to complete my 3 year Apprenticeship later this year (2011) and my future ambitions are to become an MOT Tester, and hopefully I will be joining a Motor Sports course at Hertfordshire University to become a Master Technician. Qualifications go a long way Kamrul Hussain Business and Administration Apprentice Before I joined TBG Learning I was doing a part time course that was really getting me nowhere. I was told about an apprenticeship course with TBG Learning in Lambeth so I visited the centre to find out more information. I joined TBG Learning’s Business Apprenticeship course which allowed me to improve my IT skills and my knowledge of Mircosoft IT packages, which resulted in me achieving recognised certificates in ITQ and Clait Plus. I then went onto completing the Business Administration Technical certificate level 2. After getting my qualifications I got help from a TBG Learning recruitment consultant to look for a job, to allow me to complete my NVQ level 2. My consultant helped me to get an Administrator vacancy and shared some valuable tips on good interview techniques. I am now working as permanent, full time Administrator. In my current role I am the first point of contact for all visitors and responsible for maintaining the reception area. I manage a busy switchboard, answering all external and internal calls and ensuring that messages are emailed upon receipt. Getting my qualifications and this job has really made me feel more confident. It goes to show that qualifications go a long way and has helped me to find and start my very first job. Help make the planet a better place Careers in the countryside and the environment are broad and often rewarding and opportunities for employment continue to expand. Capel Manor’s courses for school leavers including apprenticeships provide specialist training to rigorous industry standards. We have first-rate outdoor training sites at our centres across London to practise skills and develop understanding. Natalie Small loves all things arboricultural. Having been home schooled, when she was 14 she took up a course for 14-16-year-olds on Capel Manor’s Heaven Academy, an initiative that offers the opportunity to enhance GCSE studies by gaining vocational qualifications and experience. “The Heaven Academy introduced me to three subjects - horticulture, animal care and countryside management. Then I discovered arboriculture and one of the tutors told me about the Trees and Timber apprenticeship. The idea of being paid while you’re learning is great.” During her apprenticeship Natalie attended Horsenden Hill Farm, Capel Manor’s centre in west London whilst working with tree surgeons Anther Tree Services. “The apprenticeship is a great way of learning because you get hands on experience as well as college. It’s the reality and the theory at the same time. Watching your first tree fall and hit the ground, knowing you’ve done it all safely, is amazing. So is looking down when you’re climbing. That’s scary but so satisfying.” To request a prospectus and application form, and for details of open days taking place in May call 08456 122122 email enquiries@capel.ac.uk or visit www.capel.ac.uk

MOTOR VEHICLES There are 32 million vehicles on the UK’s roads, and all of them need to be serviced, repaired, bought and sold. That’s where the motor vehicle industry comes in... The motor vehicle sector deals with all aspects of cars, vans and motorcycles – selling them, fixing them, servicing them and even rescuing stranded drivers. There are lots of career paths on offer, from technical to customer-service based roles – it all depends on what interests you. The good news about this sector is that vocational training is the best way to get into it. Here are the main areas within the motor vehicle sector – there are vocational routes into all of them.

Maintenance and repair

One of the most popular areas, maintenance and repair is about keeping cars roadworthy. These technicians service, fix and replace parts of all sorts of vehicles. They can work in independent garages or as part of dealerships, say working on just BMWs. Some technicians specialise in things like electrics or motorcycles. Earnings: Between £13,000 and £20,000 a year.

Body and paint

Body and paint technicians fix cars that have been damaged in accidents. Body work is about fixing the insides of a car (like electrics or structure) and paint work is about sprucing up the outside of the car, like fresh paint to make everything look like new again. Earnings: Between £13,500 and £18,000 a year.

Roadside assistance

When someone’s car breaks down on the side of the road, it’s the roadside recovery technician who comes to the rescue. They either fix the car onsite or safely tow it back to a garage. Earnings: Between £13,000 and £16,000 a year.

Fitting

Motor vehicle fitters repair and replace parts on cars, like tyres, batteries, brakes and exhausts while the customers wait. They can work in fast-fit centres, dealerships or alongside motor vehicle technicians. Earnings: Between £12,000 and £15,000 a year.

Parts operations

This area is about selling car parts to the public – dealerships, motor vehicle technicians and everyday customers. It’s a customer-service based role that requires good organisation to process payments, manage inventory, advise customers, and more. Earnings: Between £9,000 and £14,500 a year.

Sales

This is about selling cars, which involves broad knowledge of cars and negotiation skills. It’s also about understanding people – sales people need to find the car that’s right for the customer, and have the confidence to seal the deal. Earnings: Between £10,000 and £15,000 a year, plus commission.

Mark had achieved a National Diploma in Motor Vehicle Technology at college but the apprenticeship gave him the opportunity to learn practical skills and the chance to pick up knowledge from experienced and skilled colleagues. Mark feels this has proved more beneficial than the full time classroom delivery at college. Mark completed his Level 3 apprenticeship qualifications in November 2009 through Remit. Mark was fortunate to find an apprenticeship at 20 – most apprentices start between the ages of 16 and 18. At MPC, Mark is typically involved in servicing vehicles but also does most of the welding work that needs to be done in the company. He has now also become a qualified MOT tester. Outside work, Mark has just bought his own house so most of his spare time is devoted to this. For more information about Remit contact: apprenticeships@remit.co.uk 0845 839 9200 www.remit.co.uk

TRAVEL & HOSPITALITY SECTOR You don’t have to work 9-5 in an office

You could take the first career step that Jamie Oliver took

TRAVEL & HOSPITALITY Fancy a career where you help people enjoy themselves, with opportunities to travel in the UK and abroad? Then look no further than the travel and hospitality sector... This is one of the most popular sectors. In our country alone, it employs nearly 2.1 million people and covers a range of industries from restaurants and hotels to tour operators and nightclubs. People working in this industry arrange our holidays, cook for us in restaurants, serve drinks at the bar, lead our tours, and more. It’s a buzzing, exciting sector with many opportunities to work in the UK and abroad. In fact, businesses in this industry take on close to 15,000 new apprentices each year. Here are some of the major areas within travel and hospitality:

Travel services

These are the travel agents and tour operators who help people book their holidays. They work in both call centres and high street travel agencies (like Thomas Cook, STA Travel), advising people on anything from flight schedules and tour packages to travel insurance and visa infomation. Good customer service is an essential part of this career. Earnings: Salaries start between £11,000 and £14,000 a year.

Catering

This is all about professional cooking – for restaurants, takeaways, canteens, pubs, cafes and anywhere else that boasts a menu. It’s an industry that rewards hard work and ambition. After all, Jamie Oliver started out as a cooking apprentice. Earnings: Salaries start between £10,000 and £13,000 a year.

Air cabin crew

Fancy a career up in the air? These are the people who make sure we’re comfortable and safe during flights. The perks are lots of free travel and a career that’s always on the go. Earnings: Salaries start between £14,000 and £16,000 a year.

Bars & waitstaff

We Brits love to go out. This is the perfect industry for people who like to get out there and mingle. Bar and waitstaff work ‘front of house’ in restaurants, pubs and nightclubs and serve customers. It’s all about good customer service...and the tips of course! Earnings: Salaries start between £9,000 and £12,000 a year (plus tips).

Hotels & resorts

It takes a lot of people to run a successful hotel – the receptionists who check in guests, the housekeeper who keeps the sheets crisp, the reservations assistant who makes bookings, the porter who ferries luggage to the room. This industry covers work in hostels, caravan parks and holiday park too. Earnings: Salaries start between £10,000 and £13,000 a year.

CREATIVE, DIGITAL & MEDIA From fashion and film to design and new media, it’s all about the creative buzz in this exciting, fast-paced industry. Vocational learning is a great way to get your foot in the door! Forget the starving artist. If you’re a creative person, there are many ways to have a successful career. This industry covers things that play a big role in our everyday lives, from the television we watch to the websites we click on. Because it’s such an exciting sector, competition for jobs can be high so work experience and on-thejob training is highly recommended. Here are some of the biggest areas within this sector:

Graphic design

Fashion

Performing arts

Publishing

We live in a world of visual messages: websites, billboards, magazines, signs, packaging, etc. A graphic designer uses type (lettering) and images to get information across and make an impact. Earnings: Salaries start anywhere between £13,000 and £18,000 a year.

It takes years of practice, talent, hard work (and luck) to be a performer, but there are plenty of supporting roles on offer. You could help light the productions, dress the actors in wardrobe or man the ticket booth – all without the risk of stagefright! Earnings: Salaries are between £12,000 and £16,000 a year.

Interactive media

Interactive media or ‘new media’ covers any digital product that responds to the user’s action by presenting pop-ups, text, video and sound. Facebook is a perfect example – others include iPhone apps, viral ads and dynamic websites. It’s all things digital, and it’s a fast-paced industry where technology pushes forward each day. Earnings: As creative and IT-type role, salaries are quite high for the industry – you could make between £16,000 and £20,000 a year.

Computer games

It takes a team of creative types to produce something like Call of Duty – level designers who map out the game, graphic designers who imagine what it all looks like, and games testers to make sure there’s no glitches. Earnings: Salaries start between £15,000 and £19,000 a year.

34

This stylish industry needs fashion designers to dream up the next hot look, pattern cutters to turn the designs into real clothes, buyers to stock shops with the best trends, managers to make sure everything runs to budget, plus many more hard-working people. Earnings: Starting around £12,000-£15,000.

Without this industry, this publication you’re reading wouldn’t exist. From journalists looking for the big story to book editors crafting an author’s manuscript into a bestseller, this is an industry for people who love the written word. Earnings: Between £15,000 and £20,000 a year.

Film & TV
