L for SMILES

Fall for Smiles is an annual campaign that aims to educate consumers and their communities about the importance of a healthy mouth.

The campaign’s goal is to ensure that Americans of all ages recognize the importance of oral health to their overall health, know how to care for their mouth at home and know when to see a dental professional to prevent problems before they have a chance to impact overall health. As dental professionals, Oral Health America knows you already understand the issues, which is why we look to you and other dental offices across the country to join us every fall to promote dental education.

s e c ďŹƒ O l a t n e D How d e v l o v Get In Drs. Christina and Diane Klein are sisters and dentists who serve the Staten Island community with their dental practice, Dynamic Dental. The doctors regularly visit schools to educate students about the importance of oral health, so they were excited to learn about how Fall for Smiles campaign encourages all Americans to take care of their mouths. As participants in the campaign last year, the doctors visited over 450 students to teach them about caring for their smiles.

During last year’s Fall for Smiles campaign, OHA and Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait, an initiative of the Dental Trade Alliance, hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill. The event, “A State of Decay: Coming of Age Without Oral Healthcare,” brought attention to the increasingly complex and serious situation currently facing older Americans when it comes to oral health.

During the remarks, oral health leaders spoke about the challenge of paying for care and the need for improved oral health literacy among older adults and their caregivers. In addition to uniting oral health leaders and supporters from across the country around the issue of oral healthcare for older Americans, the event also honored Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) for his work in addressing oral health disparities nationwide.

“We are in the process of removing many of the cultural, educational and institutional barriers to care, but there is much to be done,” Congressman Cummings said at the briefing. “My commitment to oral health remains strong and I look forward to our continued work together to strengthen our nation’s oral healthcare system.”

h t l a e H l a r O d o o G r o f s p i T s e l i Fall for Sm Oral health is connected to overall wellness. Good oral healthcare practices promote a lifetime of health and many dental issues can be prevented with consistent self-care.

Prevention is important at every age, so follow the tips below to maintain a healthy mouth throughout your life.

Parents should gently brush a baby’s gums after each feeding, either with a baby toothbrush or a washcloth, starting at birth. Children should have their first visit to the dentist by age one.

Starting at age 2, brush teeth twice a day with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Help younger children brush their teeth and encourage them as they get older to brush their own teeth first (with parents or caregivers brushing again afterwards) and to not swallow toothpaste.

Begin flossing once a day as soon as a child has two teeth that touch each other. Teach older children how to floss by wrapping floss around both middle fingers and then wrapping it around one finger as it gets used. Flossers can also be used to make the process easier.

Make sure to brush twice a day every day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. For tips and fun videos to encourage healthy toothbrush habits, please visit 2min2x.org

Visit the dentist twice a year for regular cleanings and checkups.

Maintain a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables to promote good oral health and avoid all forms of tobacco.

Older adults with dexterity issues can use child-sized or electric toothbrushes and flossers for easier self-care. Those with problems swallowing can use less toothpaste or none at all since the act of brushing away food and plaque is the most important part of brushing.

Dental appliances should be cleaned every day using a soaking tablet, brushed gently under running water and stored in fresh, clean water.

Make sure your dentist has an up-to-date list of your medications and medical conditions.
