DEAR VALUED OHA SUPPORTER, In 2014 Oral Health America advocated, educated, and aided in access to oral healthcare for hundreds of thousands of Americans. We supported our partners in providing preventive services to 460,000 children in school-based settings to foster learning and development through Smiles Across America®. We developed resources for the 10,000 Americans turning 65 each day to address the growing crisis facing older adults through the Wisdom Tooth Project. Through the Campaigns for Oral Health Equity, OHA promoted policies like CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Plan, that prioritize oral health alongside other chronic diseases through advocacy and multiple communications channels. On behalf of the board and staff of Oral Health America, we hope that our 2014 Annual Report will illustrate the wisdom of your investment in OHA. We believe it spotlights your direct impact on our programs and initiatives – connecting communities nationwide with resources and education to access oral healthcare. Smiles Across America OHA’s Smiles Across America® (SAA) program provides needed oral healthcare and education to more children in schoolbased and school-linked settings. In 2014, OHA celebrated the program’s tenth anniversary, which began with a partnership with Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Department of Public Health in 2004. In honor of this landmark year, OHA co-hosted celebrations across the country with the founding SAA program partners— Children’s Dental Services of Minneapolis, New York University College of Dentistry— Pediatric Dentistry, Santa Barbara Ventura Counties Dental Care Foundation and the Chicago Department of Public Health. Looking forward, OHA welcomed new partners to the SAA family: Sprout Oral Health Sealants for Smiles! in Bozeman, MT and Healthy Smiles in Fresno, CA.
During the 2013-2014 school year, Smiles Across America expanded to 304 program partners in 47 states and 1 US territory serving more than 460,000 school-aged children.
“Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) is committed to addressing the critical needs of children in vulnerable communities through programs like Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® (RMCM),” said Sheila Musolino, chief operating officer, RMHC. “Through our relationship with Oral Health America, we can provide not only dental care services aboard our RMCM program, but also vital resources and education to help children and families understand the critical importance of dental health to their overall wellbeing.” 6
Wisdom Tooth Project OHA’s Wisdom Tooth Project® (WTP) addresses the growing crisis facing older adults by improving access to and utilization of care, increasing health literacy and advocating for policies that promote oral health equity. In 2014 OHA grew partnerships with states across the country and with organizations in the aging community. Participation grew at toothwisdom.org, with increased resources for healthcare professionals and older adults. OHA also launched a pilot in Chicago for Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth, a first-of-itskind education workshop to empower older adults to take charge of their oral health. Trough a partnership with the American Dental Hygienists Association, hygienists attended a training at OHA’s national headquarters and then led workshops throughout the Chicago area at senior and community centers.
93 percent of participants in the Wisdom Tooth Project’s pilot curricullum, Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About your Mouth, felt more confident about their ability to manage their oral health based on what they learned at the workshop.

Campaigns for Oral Health Equity
Fellowships and Internships
The Campaigns for Oral Health Equity engage the public by encouraging Americans to raise their voices and prioritize mouth health alongside other health considerations.
When OHA was founded in 1955 as The Foundation for Dental Education, our primary mission was to assist in financing the training of promising future dental educators. Although OHA’s mission has evolved, the organization still supports future dental professionals through paid internship and fellowship opportunities. For the first time, two one-year fellowships were available—one working with Smiles Across America® and another with the Wisdom Tooth Project®-- both open to college graduates who wish to pursue dentistry or dental hygiene.
Fall for Smiles More than 150 million Americans Fall for Smiles by engaging with our grassroots campaign to promote healthy oral health habits. OHA hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill entitled “Communities Matter: Does Your Neighborhood Determine Your Oral Health,” engaging policymakers and oral health in dialogue to prioritize the Reauthorization of CHIP and the Older Americans Act. The Honorable Louis Wade Sullivan and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) were recognized for their work to create equity in oral healthcare. Additionally, dental professionals across the country engaged their local communities to provide free days of care.
NSTEP® For twenty years, Oral Health America has knocked spit tobacco out of the park by advocating for spit tobacco cessation through NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Program). As part of a partnership with Little League International®, 1500 young athletes encouraged peers to quit tobacco use or never pick up the habit by participating in OHA’s annual slogan contest
Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives Oral Health America celebrated a third year of campaign success as Executive Committee members for the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. The Kids Healthy Mouths Ad Council public service campaign garnered $80 million in donated media and more than 50% of parents surveyed have seen the ad.
Seal Two Million We’re more than half way to our goal to Seal Two Million teeth. To date, we’ve kept our commitment to Amarica’s Promise Alliance by sealing more than 1.8 million teeth five-years ahead of schedule! 9

OHA’s Bernard and Kathleen Beazley Summer Internship Program is funded by a planned gift to OHA from the late couple, allowing two rising college seniors to take on research and communications projects, meet oral health leaders and shadow dentists and hygienists in public and private settings. Additional work study internships have developed with Loyola University during the Spring semester.

Gala & Benefit OHA’s Annual Gala & Benefit serves as the organization’s single largest fundraiser for programs and campaigns that increase access to oral healthcare for vulnerable Americans. The 24th Annual Gala & Benefit, held at Chicago’s historic Palmer House Hotel, sold out for the first time and was OHA’s most successful gala to date. Dr. Anthony Volpe was honored at a pre-gala reception for more than 40 years of dedication to the dental industry, from his work with dental schools across the country to his groundbreaking research at ColgatePalmolive.

OHA’s Smiles Across America® partners sealed 733,390 teeth on school-aged children in 2014, preventing painful and costly tooth decay.
Donations to OHA can be made in honor or memory of a family member, loved one or colleague. From celebrating an achievement or anniversary to making a gift to honor someone’s life, memory and honor gifts allow OHA to choose the most critical need to put your gift into action. Dr. Emanuel Catania of Mt. Arlington Family Dentistry in Mt. Arlington, New Jersey, regularly makes donations to OHA in memory of his patients. “As a dentist I thought the best way for me to acknowledge the passing of a patient was to make a donation to a charitable organization which represents the oral health interests of the American public.
