OVER $500,000 RAISED AT THIS YEAR’S GALA & BENEFIT OHA’s 22nd annual Gala & Benefit at Chicago’s Navy Pier, successfully raised more than $500,000 to help bring healthy mouths to life. Guests were treated to a four-course dinner, dancing, an energetic live auction, and a great opportunity to network with colleagues. Guests also raised auction paddles during the event’s first-ever bidfor-the-cause, which raised money for OHA’s programs. “While OHA’s gala represents the largest single revenue source supporting our programs in education, advocacy and access to care, most gratifying of all is the broad support it receives from our community of industry partners,” said OHA’s Director of Development Brad McLaughlin.
“Next year’s big event on February 20, 2013 already promises to be even bigger and better. We could not be more grateful.” - brad mclaughlin , oha ’ s director of development
SMILES ACROSS AMERICA INNOVATION GRANTS UPDATE The Smiles Across America® (SAA) Innovation Grant recipients have been busy! The Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program has visited two sites on the Cheyenne Indian Reservations where only 23 percent of the tribe’s children have received preventive dental services. The mobile program was able to treat 286 children and provide fluoride varnish, sealants and oral health education. The Santa Barbara-Ventura Counties Dental Care Foundation held a two-hour oral health education program in the strawberry fields at El Puerto Berry Farms with the pickers. The City of Portland’s Children’s Oral Health Program (COHP) created Oral Health Totes for Teachers as a way to make oral health education available for everyone. The totes include an oral health curriculum which is easy to follow and includes lessons for grades kindergarten through middle school. The totes allowed COHP to deliver oral health education in the classroom without using staff time and resources.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR GRANT RECIPIENTS—KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
A LONGTIME SUPPORTER’S WONDERFUL LEGACY During this year’s Gala & Benefit, OHA remembered Mr. Bernard (Bernie) Beazley, who helped create America’s Fund for Dental Education (now Oral Health America) as chief counsel for the American Dental Association. Bernie also served as OHA’s Board Chair in 1960 and as Gala Chair Emeritus from 1986 until 2010. During the Pre-Gala Reception, OHA announced the creation of the Bernard and Kathleen Beazley Summer Internship Program, which will provide a unique look into the world of public health dentistry and oral health leadership for one rising undergraduate student each summer. Beginning in May 2012, the 12-week paid internship experience allows the student to be extensively involved in OHA’s work to improve the oral health of vulnerable Americans across the entire spectrum of life. The internship is possible thanks to a planned gift to OHA by Mr. and Mrs. Beazley.

FROM OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS “Oral Health America has been making a difference, improving oral health for children and adults for over 50 years. It is truly a joy to support such an organization that maintains its focus and dedication to oral health improvements but continues to renew itself and its activities to better serve the community.” - Linda Niessen, DMD, MPH, MPP DENTSPLY International Vice President Chief Clinical Officer
“I began my involvement with OHA at about the same time I began my career in the dental industry. I was especially impressed by the way OHA was and is able to successfully connect with congressional leaders and others who were able to positively impact oral health. The NSTEP® program was of particular interest to me since it brought attention to a problem that, up until then, had received little public attention”
