Dental Detective Academy (DDA)

Education

A comprehensive oral health education program designed to be delivered in the waiting room by our Educators and Volunteers.

Kids Smiles Community Educators provide innovative oral health education throughout the communities that we serve. This programming is suited for all ages and is delivered in Head Start and day care centers, as well as at public, private, and charter schools.

Dental Screenings

Dental students support the delivery of the DDA and other special projects Kids Smiles Dentists and Dental Hygienists provide visual screenings, noting while gaining valuable exposure to the Kids Smiles model the overall oral health of a student, as well as possible decay or urgent of public health dentistry. need. These results are shared with parents and the school. Phone calls are made to parents of children with possible decay or urgent need, allowing for Kids Smiles to provide access to care.

Prevention Mobile dental equipment is used in school settings to provide comprehensive preventive services by Kids Smiles Dentists. Results are shared with the children’s parents and the school, and follow up appointments are scheduled at our centers.

Primary Care Partners The Kids Smiles oral health education program is delivered in primary care waiting rooms by our Community Educators. This effort allows us to educate entire families about the importance of oral health while directly appointing patients with dental exams at our centers.

What does North Philadelphia look like? • Highest poverty rate in city and state • 10 health centers with dental appointments 120 days out • Distressed school district • Dental students, interns, residents all needing to do OHL “community projects”!


What does the Philadelphia school need? to meet STANDARDS • Less interruptions to the curriculum • Instruction that requires minimal resources (i.e. paper) • Ease of implementation • Exercises that reinforce the basic learning goals


Kindergarten • Letters that make sounds in words • Counting with objects • Clocks and calendars • Simple science experiments • Hands on discovery


First Grade • Journal writing • Simple adding and subtracting • Counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s • Parts of the human body • Characteristics of plants and animals


2nd Grade • Read and write (especially love riddles) • Punctuation • Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers • Multiply up through 5 • Science predictions and patterns • Life cycles


3rd Grade • Reading comprehension and looking at pictures for clues • Write reports • Fractions and decimals • Summarize and use graphs • Science observation • Social consequences for behavior


4th Grade • Using root words • Essay writing with the use of the internet and dictionary • Math conversion problems • Creating graphs • Understanding organisms in our environment • State history


5th Grade • Analyzing characters in stories, plot and settings • Write poetry, stories and songs • Decimals, fractions and percentages • Early American history


Oral Health Literacy “Live” PROS • Allows an expert to present new information and answer questions • Interaction and demonstration • Introduces students to a clinician • Instructor brings all needed materials
