Orange Pages Lifestyle Supplement and Business Directory – Issue No 2 – April 2013
Business of the month Tenerife’s leading business directory is packed full of fantastic companies all over the island – and here at Orange Pages we want to shout about them! Every month we will feature some of the best businesses in our special ‘Business of the Month’ section. Second in our series is a feature all about Manfred Weller and his business of more than 17 years, Menny Fix.
MENNY FIX, EL CAMISON, LOS CRISTIANOS Menny is a guy who can fix anything – well, almost anything. He’s a genius when it comes to the wonderful world of telecommunications, having qualifications and over two decades experience in the industry. Over the years he’s helped literally hundreds of Tenerife residents hook up to their favourite TV shows, not to mention hundreds more tourists who can’t bear to be without their beloved BBC when they’re on holiday. On top of that, he’s worked with loads of sports bars and pubs all over the island to bring their big-screens to life and keep sports enthusiasts and customers happy. Over the years, Menny’s business has been constantly evolving to keep up with the ever-changing trends of the telecommunications industry. In the 1990s it was all about the digital revolution and Menny is proud to say his business was responsible for importing masses of digital boxes into Tenerife and installing plenty of 100cm antennas around the island. Eventually, as more and more people got their d-boxes installed, Menny Fix reached the saturation point and he had to think of new ways to reach out to customers. “I imported quite a few D-boxes to Tenerife. Back then (1994) BBC Prime still existed and thus our customers were the English. I had a team of five people at the time and in our first year we installed nearly 2,000 systems. Today, we install satellite systems mostly for sports bars; this makes up roughly 60 per cent of our sales. The remaining 40 per cent continue to be with private customers.” In today’s market, the focus has shifted to accessing TV through the Internet – something
Menny anticipated some time ago. He’s been selling and servicing satellite, CCTV security and TV systems all over Europe, Tenerife and the Canary Islands to a very high standard. And part of his job is to keep his customers up to date with all the new information and changes in this business. Recently there was a shock switch off from some channels and many TV lovers all over the island have been suddenly seeing blank screens on certain channels. It’s a complicated story but Menny knows about this sort of stuff and he’s here to help you. So if you’ve been affected by this recent change in programming or are in need of a TV tune-up, visit Menny and his team at Menny Fix in El Camison, Los Cristianos or call 922 792 116 or check out his website www. mennyfix.com
This is OP & he’s the official Orange Pages mascot…
cute isn’t he?
Here at Orange Pages we’re all about creative advertising. We want to help businesses reach out to people all over Tenerife via our site www.orangepagesonline.com and monthly in this fantastic supplement. Although he’s only ten weeks old, OP has had a busy start to life. Not only has he been given the honourable title of Orange Pages Mascot, he’s been getting to know our island and the people who live here. Wherever he goes, he stops people in their tracks – he’s just too cute! So we’ve come up with an innovative idea. Our adorable Pug puppy will help put your business on the map! Sounds a bit bonkers, we know, but picture the scene; OP taking a ride in a hire car…you’d remember that wouldn’t you? OP sitting in a supermarket shopping trolley – that’s got to be a memorable image. OP getting a haircut from a Tenerife-based dog groomer. Get the idea advertisers? So, if you want your business to be remembered then why not hire OP. Of course, you’ll have to speak to his agents - the Orange Pages team at Las Chafiras – to book your photo shoot or OP-orientated advert. Go on… you know you want to. Give OP a call on 922 703 121

Live Arico P.A.W.S (Pets Animal welfare supporters)
APRIL news www.livearico.org Facebook Live Arico Tenerife The Great Live Arico GiveAway!!!! Two separate events recently have given us an opportunity help others in need, which is always a good thing to do. Firstly, the closure of our Silencio charity shop meant there were no less than 65 bags and boxes of unwanted stock, which we were happy to donate to charities helping the island’s homeless people. 8 bags of children’s toys and clothes went to the Guardyl Childrens home, and hundreds of books to Cats Welfare to be sold on the markets to raise fund for spaying street cats. Secondly, the people in charge of looking after our dogs in the Fasnia refuge turned away a donation of 2,660 kilos of food from us, seemingly it is not what the dogs eat anymore. So, as I type, we are putting together a list of needy refuges on the island which will benefit by taking this food. We are calling it Operation Robin Hood, and we will update next month on how it all went. Special Needs Dogs – Never Give Up A litter of puppies is normally no problem to rehome, however, when three are found to have developed devastating eye problems, then it is not quite so straightforward. Our ethos of not giving up until all hope is lost comes at a high price, and we are currently fundraising to try and fund the puppies care, and make a long term plan. They are back with an ophthalmologist in Santa Cruz next week, and we will update you on their progress. One of them is pictured, isn’t she lovely.

On Easter Sunday British Airways will begin a regular service between Gatwick and Tenerife. The Independent asked why there needs to be a new service when already half a dozen other operators are covering the route. The paper then answered its own question: All the current services are budget airlines; BA will offer business class and 23kg of baggage will be included even for those travelling at the back. Which is what the euro has been doing since the beginning of March. Admittedly the yen has fallen even further but that wound is intentionally self-inflicted; Japan’s government wants a weaker currency and seems prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve it. The euro’s injury is also arguably self-inflicted but it was anything but deliberate; it was ham-fisted. A month ago it was the Italian general election that fed nervousness about the euro. To an extent it was well-founded: The
anti-everything Five Star Movement won nearly a quarter of the vote and a month later there was still no coalition. But investors are content to assume that Italy will muddle through. The country has after all swapped its leadership roughly once a year since the war.
Meanwhile, sterling has had a makeover. Credit for this must go to the Bank of England governor. He told a TV interviewer; “Recovery is in sight”. He also said; “We’re certainly not looking to push sterling down” and “We are moving to a properly valued exchange rate. I think we’re probably there.” The first bit of that came as a surprise to
investors who had spent the last four years watching him try to push sterling down but they fell in with the idea that the pound might have fallen far enough. Sterling is still 4% lower on the year against the euro but the playing field looks more level. That doesn’t make the pound a screaming buy but it should allow it to avoid the casual brutality meted out to it by investors in January and February.
Today it is nervousness about Cyprus holding the euro back. More accurately, it is nervousness about the way the European Council has manoeuvred Nicosia into a corner by demanding it finance part of its own bailout. There is also concern that, although the proposal was thrown out by the Cypriot parliament, Brussels is now minded to treat bank deposits as a fair target, to be dipped into (or “taxed”) when it fancies doing so. Having rejected the idea of confiscating bank deposits, Cyprus must now find another way to raise the €5.8bn contribution to its bailout. If it fails, the country will lose the support of the European Central Bank and one or more of the country’s banks will go
Wealth Declarations and Tax The recent tax amnesty on undeclared assets explained The Spanish government had high expectations in collecting circa €2,500 million in unpaid taxes through the recent "tax amnesty”. Towards the end of 2012 only €150 million had been collected with the disclosure of €12,000 million of undeclared income generated from hidden assets which including foreign residents. A key factor for this response was the Law 7/2012 published in October 2012 introducing a new tax declaration to be filed before the end of March each year, starting in 2013. Exceptionally for 2013, the deadline is extended until the end of April. Tax resident individuals and companies are now obliged to file a declaration disclosing the ownership of all non-Spanish assets including foreign bank accounts and real estate amongst others. This annual declaration is for informative purposes and does not involve paying any tax. However, having given the tax office all of this information they may then check that income and wealth has been declared. Fines for not filing or failing to disclose an asset start at the rate of €10,000, so it is imperative to check if this applies to you! This disclosure is not just for simple ownership of foreign assets but also for persons or companies who are beneficial owners, or have €50,000 or more in foreign assets. This is clearly meant to catch beneficiaries or settlors of trusts and other legal structures. All shareholders of foreign companies must supply certificates of residence showing their tax paying status, if not
supplied the company will be charged tax as an offshore company at 3% of the value of its assets, if the owner is offshore then the control will be considered to be in an offshore environment and taxed accordingly.
Worst possible scenario Should the tax office discover that a Spanish tax resident owns an undeclared foreign asset it could presume that the whole asset value represents undeclared taxable income. The tax office would regard the asset cost as general income generated in the oldest of the nonprescribed tax years (e.g. four years ago). Tax rates vary between 24% and 56% in various parts of Spain (15/30% corporation tax), including potential fines of 150% of the unpaid tax, late payment interest plus the fines for failing to disclose, the total payment to the tax office would almost certainly be substantially more than the value of the hidden asset. Wincham sees a surprising number of cases where the undisclosed foreign assets do not, in fact, represent much of a problem and we can rectify by re-filing income declarations and paying a small amount of tax. This simple solution then allows the new declaration to be filed in April without any worries and a further declaration for your income will then be filed in June. Contact Wincham International now to discuss your wealth and tax declarations, we can handle your Spanish tax matters for 2012/2013 for a fixed fee of £300 plus VAT.

Tenerife South Management Services Sun-kissed Tenerife is attracting property hunters from all over Europe looking to take advantage of the falling real estate prices around Spain. And on top of the thousands of people looking to relocate to Tenerife, there are the five million tourists that visit our island from all over the world every year. Tenerife’s residents and tourists need good quality accommodation whether it’s a beautiful apartment with a sea view, rural property high up in the hills or a private villa with all the trimmings. The Canary Islands are going through a Renaissance period in terms of interest from investors looking to move to our island of ‘Eternal Spring’. The latter part of 2012 saw property prices drop and this trend continues into 2013 with many villas, apartments, houses and rural properties on the market at extremely favourable prices. In fact, the statistics for January 2013 reveal that house sales in the Canary Islands increased to 1,630, 504 more than the same period the previous year. Tenerife South Management Service has been established since 1991 and are experts in the Tenerife property market. Over the years they’ve looked after hundreds of properties on behalf of investors. Their offices in Los Christians are as busy as ever and they maintain their record as a leading property management service on the island.

Working with property owners all over the island who rent out to holidaymakers, TSMS know only too well that investors are always on the look out for a property management company they can trust to look after all aspects of the renting process – this is what the TSMS team do best. “One of our main aims is to offer our customers a property management service that is second to none. It’s very difficult to manage and look after your property when you are two thousand miles away, therefore you need a company that is reliable and trustworthy to protect your investment and give peace of mind. “We believe no other company in Tenerife can give you the comprehensive and professional level of property management that Tenerife South Management Services can offer. With our local office in Los Cristianos and our friendly professionally trained staff, most with hotel and resort experience, plus our own in-house laundry service, we are uniquely placed to care for your property,” said a TSMS spokesman. He added: “We’re available 24/7, are fully registered legal company with 21 years experience on the island. Obviously we have a very well established clientele are right now we are looking for more holiday rental properties because we have a lot of clients waiting. We have no management fees for the first year and offer either full or part time management services. Anyone is welcome for check our the super references we have available from past and present owners and clients.”
LET’S LOOK AFTER OUR FELINE FRIENDS CAT (Cats Aid Tenerife) is an organisation dedicated to helping keep the cat population under control. The man behind CATS is Dave O’Horo, who has been working hard to get CAT fully registered and legal so he can help neuter as many felines as possible. CAT does not take in strays off the streets; they focus on applying the mantra: TNR which stands for Trap, Neuter and Release. He works with local vets to sterilize cats found in the grounds of hotels, residential complexes and elsewhere before releasing the newlyspayed cat back to where they were found. Dave told Orange Pages: “We are not a refuge for cats, although we do have a few cats in our care looking to be re-homed. I would like people to think of CAT as an organisation that is committed to helping cats in Tenerife. We do that by applying our mantra of ‘Trap, Neuter and Release’. In an ideal world
our work will eventually lead to less cats being born and keeping the cat population in Tenerife from increasing out of control. Our aim is to slow down the population increase and therefore stop some of the suffering that goes on.” Dave has been involved with helping cats for many years, having worked in similar projects in Ireland before he moved to Tenerife. It’s worrying to think that one female cat can have literally dozens of litters of kittens in her early life which leads to a lot of suffering for both her and her kittens. “There is a huge amount of
cats around Tenerife and hopefully we can help in keeping the numbers down. It’s unrealistic to think we can stop the numbers going up too much, but our aim is to neuter as many cats as possible to keep the population under control. “We work with a very good local vet, depending on where a cat or cats are found, get them neutered and then release them back into the environment from which we took them”, added Dave. CAT relies on funding, so all donations are gratefully appreciated. Check out the website on www.cats-aid.com

SPOTLIGHT ON TENERIFE REGIONS…
EL Médano
El Médano is a fantastic coastal town on the southern edge of Tenerife just a few kilometres from the south airport. Some people could be forgiven if they miss this bohemian beach resort that stands below the mighty Montaña Roja – but thanks to the Orange Pages Spotlight of the Month feature, we’re hoping to persuade the tourists of 2013 to pop into El Medaño and to remind locals to rediscover this gem of a resort. El Médano is a haven for surfers, bikini-clad sunbathers, promenade strollers and beach-loving locals and tourists searching for a Spanish alternative to mainstream resorts like Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. For those of you who don’t know, the waves are so damn good at El Médano it’s home to world class surfing and kite-surfing competitions, attracting competitors from all over the world including hardcore sports enthusiasts from Hawaii, the States and Australia. The constant trade winds at Médano create awe-inspiring waves that propel these adrenalinfuelled kite surfers several feet off the water and into the air where they perform tricks and stunts to dazzle the many onlookers who watch and wonder from the array of bars and restaurants that line the promenade. The wooden boardwalk runs alongside the beach which is one of the few Tenerife beaches with golden sand rather than the volcanic variety. There’s also the curious pale-coloured pumice rocks that line the sand and from where El Médano gets its name – the sand dune.
Suave apartments overlook the beach and there’s the iconic three-star El Médano Hotel jetting out into the Atlantic Ocean which offers its guests stunning views over the crystal warm waters. Sipping and savouring a cool beer (other drinks are available) from one of the many bars or cafés along the boardwalk is a lovely way to pass the hours in Médano. There’s a rich variety of Canarian cuisine available, choice of tapas, traditional British food options and much, much
more here. Dotted throughout the town is also a great selection of surf-orientated shops and outlets. This is definitely the place to come if you’re looking for a good quality wet suit, board wax or other surfing and sports paraphernalia as well as ϋber cool clothing labels like O’Neil, Rip Curl, Roxy, Quicksilver, Billabong and such. It’s not just the surfers who love Médano, families are drawn to the town too. And that’s because there’s a lovely section of beach
(close to Hotel Médano) where the water is calm, shallow and perfect for the kids. The children’s playground is also down this end of town and the icecreams parlours are plentiful. So, next time you
want to enjoy a day on the beach, why not lay your towel down in Médano and soak up the sunshine. Watching the orange sun slowly disappear behind the horizon is fabulous in Médano. One top tip is to
enjoy some of the local fresh seafood and fish accompanied by a crisp glass of wine whilst the sun sets. Amazing! And it’s right here, right here on our doorstep.

Those living in Tenerife should pay careful attention to this article. Aspirin is often in the news with fresh claims about its effects on health. Recent research has now found potential good news regarding skin cancer: taking aspirin may lower melanoma risk. Women who take aspirin may have a lower risk of developing melanoma, according to a new study, published in Cancer, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. As part of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), in the USA, the researchers observed women aged 50 to 79 years for 12 years, on average. At the beginning of the study the women were asked for information on the medicines they were taking, their diet and what activities they carried out. For this study into melanoma skin cancer, Jean Tang, MS, PhD, of Stanford School of Medicine, Palo Alto, and her colleagues studied and analysed the data from 59,806 Caucasian
women. They discovered that the women who took more doses of aspirin were less likely to develop melanoma during the follow-up period of 12 years. The women who took aspirin had a 21 percent reduced risk of melanoma compared to women who didn’t use aspirin. And the longer they took it for, the greater the protection they appeared to have. Each incremental increase in the use of aspirin (less than one year, one to four years of use, and five or more years of use) was associated with an 11 percent lower risk of melanoma. After allowing for different factors that may affect your risk of skin cancer, such as skin pigmentation, sunscreen use, etc, the result was that women who took aspirin for five years or more had a 30 percent lower risk of melanoma than women who didn’t use aspirin. “Aspirin works by reducing inflammation and this may be why using aspirin may lower your risk of developing melanoma,” said Dr Tang. Other pain medications, such as
acetaminophen, did not lower women’s melanoma risk. Dr Tang has suggested the next step of a clinical trial to directly test whether aspirin can be taken to prevent melanoma. Hazel Nunn, head of health information at Cancer Research UK, said, “It’s still early days for research into whether aspirin could cut the risk of melanoma. These findings need to be followed up in a randomised trial to find out if there’s a real effect. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer is largely preventable through protecting our skin from sunburn. “Although there’s now good evidence that people who regularly take aspirin have a lower overall risk of cancer, aspirin can lead to stomach bleeds and other side effects. So for now people should hold off taking aspirin to help cut their risk of cancer and speak to their GP if they have any concerns.” Every year around 12,800 people in the UK are diagnosed with melanoma, whose incidence rises with age. It is one of the

Boast for British Airways
The inaugural flight of the new British Airways route from London Gatwick to Tenerife South was fully booked, signalling a great start for the prestigious airline which also offers a Business Class service on board. The successful start has pleased the airline and Tenerife tourism minister Carlos Alonso who says it’s a good indicator that more affluent British people are visiting the island and staying in Tenerife’s five-star hotels.

most common types cancer in people aged 15 to 34, but the highest incidence is in those over 80. The main risk factor for melanoma is ultraviolet light, which comes from the sun and sun beds. However there are other factors that can increase your risk. These include having lots of moles, especially those that are an unusual shape or very large. Fair-skinned people, those who tend to freckle, and tend to sunburn, or have a family history of melanoma are also at increased risk. Signs that you may have a melanoma are moles that are getting bigger, becoming irregular in shape, changing colour, itching or bleeding. It is important to see your doctor straight away if you think you may have a new mole or a mole that is changing. Caught early, melanoma is much easier to treat. Certainly with the summer coming and the influx of people rushing to the beaches of the Canary Isles we will all see the varying states of burn that show how the tourists are lapping up the sun. It is the after effects of such exposure which are becoming more common now and in too many instances are life threatening or fatal. It’s worth thinking about the choice of looking like you’ve had a great holiday and potentially risking your life or is it better to be more careful with your exposure to the sun?

The sixth instalment of Vin Diesel’s car-chase action-packed thriller is coming soon to cinemas around Tenerife. Scheduled to open on May 24, Fast & Furious 6 was part filmed on the island and will have movie-goers keeping their eyes open for clips of Tenerife.
An organisation that cares for endangered species has helped rescue a group of seven chimps who are now enjoying life in their new Loro Parque home.

Cristianos Community Church is launched! Sunday 17 March, 2013, St. Patrick’s Day, saw the official beginning of Cristianos Community Church. Thirty five people gathered in the Video Lounge of the Hotel Sol Princesa Dacil, Los Cristianos for the inaugural service conducted by Pastor Adrian McBride. There was a great atmosphere of anticipation as Adrian recounted the story and struggles of Ireland’s patron saint, using
the example of his life to set the focus of the new church, and outlining it as a community of people supporting and caring for each other as well as the wider community. For most people, he said, the thinking is that a Church is a building, music and hymns, and a sermon; but it is much more than that. It is about having the real desire to follow the biblical pattern of what ‘Church’ is. It’s about being part of a body of people who both celebrate and
live out their faith, and that means being there with a caring hope for when life takes a wrong turn, when it gets lonely and when it hangs by a thread. Cristianos Community Church welcomes anyone who wishes to join as it continues to meet every Sunday Morning in the Princesa Dacil Hotel at 11.00 am and every Wednesday evening at 5.00pm in the same location for Bible Study and Prayer. You can find out more at www. cristianoscommunitychurch.com or by telephoning Pastor Adrian McBride on 608 409 016.
DIVE CENTRE HONOURED WITH PRESTIGIOUS AWARD The folks at Dive and Sea Tenerife are celebrating a bumper year so far after they have been recognised for their hard work in protecting the ocean. Melissa and Peter Hamby, owners of the Golf del Sur-based dive centre, are passionate about protecting marine life and have been awarded for their hard work by PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Their efforts include collecting rubbish from the ocean while they are on dives. PADI awarded Dive and Sea Tenerife (pictured) during an informal ceremony last month. STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: ARIES... If you would like a more thorough analysis of the year ahead based on all the other planets, then please contact Hara on 922 333945 or 645988571 or email her on hara. davis@yahoo.com. Hara will take your birth details and send you a CD of the analysis. She does relationship charts and babies & children. See her website for more details: www.astrologyhara.co.uk The first sign of the zodiac, the sign of spring and new life after winter. For Aries life is a constant spring, a challenge to make life new and exciting. A sign of new ideas and change. The GOAL for Aries is to use their own will to shape their life, to bring together their desires and their actions. They need to cultivate three things – vitality, the ability to initiate change and meet challenges. There is no getting lost in emotions for Aries – above all it teaches COURAGE. How do you learn courage? Well, basically it has to be scared into us and so Aries are a magnet for stress and crises. They have plenty of honesty, enthusiasm and independence to pull them through as well as an instinct for survival and distaste for authority. The SYMBOL for Aries is the RAM – thrusting, aggressive, the leader of the flock – always ready to accept a challenge. Fierce, nothing intimidates it, nothing forces it to swerve – it’s either victory or selfdestruction….. a very masculine sign.
Aries can be very selfcentred and this is something to watch out for. They need to have a goal – short or long-term…… life will be meaningless without one. And they need to have a quest – a journey with dangers along the way and preferably a prize at the end. They may be rather forceful or insensitive but Aries are the ones that make it possible for life to change and progress. The SHADOW side of Aries is a sort of sloth – it’s not that Aries are lazy but they are dreamers – they have their own vision and they expect other people to do the messy work, and provide support for them. They can’t be bothered with the boring details or clearing up after themselves! This can be a real problem especially in relationships. Basically they only work at what they want to do – this is hard on their partners or their employees. Aries become impatient and annoyed if things aren’t done quickly and perfectly. The second thing to watch out for is their pettiness. This happens if Aries get involved in fighting the wrong battles – if they haven’t got a worthwhile cause to work towards then their energy gets

sidetracked into petty things which dissipate their will and courage and leads to frustration and self-pity. They become very angry if something isn’t how they want it to be. They explode with fury over trivial details which drive people away from them and leave Aries feeling sorry for themselves. FINAL ADVICE for Aries: relax and take it easy! The world is made up of other people who are important too. Don’t expect others to run around after you – they have their own lives, desires and concerns beside you (or they should have) and nobody’s perfect. Try to consciously cultivate patience and tolerance. Also don’t save your ideas – get on and put them into practice even if you have to get your hands dirty sometimes! Aries in 2013 2013 should be an interesting year for Aries with a few challenges. Venus is in Aries in April – this should bring plenty of love and harmony so use your powers of attraction to bring what you need into your life. Mars is also in Aries at the same time and this will give you lots of energy. Make sure you plan well and in
order to succeed. Take special care of your family in July and August and remember to stay focussed. This is a good time for business, making money and selling property.

Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages BOOK REVIEW · BOOK REVIEW
by Sheree Earnshaw This month I have chosen to review two books published in 2012, Various Pets Dead and Alive by Marina Lewycka and Waiting For Sunrise by William Boyd. The third is written by Sophie Hannah, A Room Swept White, who is one of my favorite authors. All the books are very different in their subject matter and manner of prose.
path of destruction. One year later, home in London, Lysander finds himself immersed in a life of wartime intelligence involving sex, scandal and spies, inevitably causing immense confusion for Rief. This is an amazingly fast-paced spy novel – unpredictable, and as always with Boyd, very well written.
Sophie Hannah´s books are psychological thrillers and A Room Swept White tackles the subject of cot death. It begins when TV producer Fliss Benson embarks on a documentary about cot death and three mothers - Helen Yardley, Sarah Jaggard and Ray Hines – are wrongly convicted of killing their children. The programme is part of her boss, Laurie Nattrass´s, crusade against child protection expert Dr Judith Duffy. Fliss takes on the project for money and because she is in love with Nattrass. Benson receives an anonymous note with 16 random numbers and thinks nothing of its significance. Hines begins to communicate with Benson and then Yardley is murdered - with a note with 16 numbers on it in her pocket. The police officers who investigate the murder, Giles Proust, Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse are all from Sophie Hannah´s previous novels. This is a gripping novel and tackles the subject of cot death and wrongly convicted women with great sensitivity. Waiting for Sunrise begins in Vienna, before becoming very British, and is part psychological teaser and part spy novel. It begins in Vienna 1913 when Lysander Rief, a young English actor, sits in the waiting room of a prominent psychiatrist awaiting an appointment to examine his sexual neurosis. The psychiatrist is obviously Sigmund Freud - who also features in Boyd´s previous novel, Any Human Heart. As Rief waits, the intensely beautiful Hettie Bull, also a patient, walks in and Rief is immediately obsessed. He begins a passionate affair with her which results in a
There is much confusion about the European Health Insurance Cards among British tourists – that’s why the Department of Health now has a dedicated website telling tourists and residents exactly how to obtain healthcare in Spain. Most people come over to Tenerife on holiday, have a great time and return home until the next time. But a small portion of people need to see a doctor or medical professional at some point during their visit. Here is where the European Health Insurance Card comes in. However, visitors can only use the EHIC for emergency medical treatment at state medical practices in Spain, including Tenerife. It replaced the old E11 card in 2006.
Some people get confused as to what they can use the EHIC for and which medical practices accept the card and which do not. Head of the Department of Health’s International Healthcare team, David Pennington, said: “Many British citizens living in Spain are confused about how to access state healthcare and many use
In Various Pets Dead and Alive, Doro is an ex-commune-dwelling former hippy who is finally considering marriage after nearly 40 years to the Marxist father of her children, Marcus. Her daughter Clara is a primary school teacher in a deprived part of Doncaster, who wants to make a difference. Her brother, Serge, has told the family he´s still finishing a PhD in Maths at Cambridge, but has secretly taken a job as a quantitative analyst in a City firm. He is also making millions through speculative trading on the side, all of which is very much against the principles of his parents. This is a wonderfully funny novel and examines the contradictions in life and the need to return to some kinder society.
their EHIC card when they should be accessing healthcare in another way. “This website is part of a campaign to explain who can use a UK-issued EHIC and what it’s for. It also helps people to find out about other ways to access state healthcare in Spain, depending on their circumstances.” Check out www.healthcareinspain.eu for full information.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE With thanks to Lynne Leadbetter, Tenerife Properties, San Eugenio Bajo This week we are delighted to present a stunning country property set in its own grounds in the rural location of Buzanada. The house can be found on a winding, country lane on the back roads of this pretty Canarian village. The beauty of its location is the peace and tranquility of the surrounding area, yet it is only a short drive from the more touristic town of Los Cristianos. The property has a large electric gate which opens up onto the sweeping driveway. Set on a plot size of 2145m2 the house stands on its own in beautiful grounds. The gardens are fantastically kept with grassy lawns that
surround a large swimming pool (heated from solar panels) and a central terrace and barbecue area, perfect for outside dining and entertaining. The gardens host a variety of fruit trees all and even a vegetable patch for those who like home grown food! To the rear of the property is a separate studio that could be used for guests or could be converted back into stables which was the original purpose of this outhouse. The outside areas are immaculately kept and boast privacy and also fantastic views to the sea and sun all day long on the pool. The fruit trees and the pergola over the terrace area offer shade if you need to escape from the heat. Internally the house is designed in the rustic style with exposed beams throughout
adding to the country house style. It has a large, open plan lounge / dining room, leading into a spacious and well-equipped kitchen all looking to the front of the property, over the pool and gardens. To the rear of the kitchen is a large conservatory, ideal for the cooler winter evenings and adding to the general feeling of space and light that pervades the property. Downstairs is also an office which could be used as a bedroom and a bathroom. Moving on to the upper level of the house, there are four double bedrooms, including a large master bedroom with an en-suite which enjoys fantastic views out to sea.
There is also another bathroom and an upper central landing area. All rooms are very light with large double doors leading onto various French terraces on the upper level. This beautiful country house
is sold fully inclusive of all furnishing and fittings and is on the market for an asking price of 650,000 Euros. Please contact Rachel at Tenerife Properties should you wish to arrange a viewing on 922 724 110 or 608 573443 or rachel@ tenerifeproperties.net

Mr. Fixer... Here at Orange Pages, we like to help people solve their problems – every month Mr Fixer will do his best to answer our readers’ queries and put them in touch with the right business. Dear Mr Fixer, I hope you can help me and all the brave women on Tenerife who are battling with breast cancer. Recently my life has been turned upside down after being diagnosed with the disease. After much treatment, operations, doctor’s appointments and worry I’m pleased to say that I’m on the road to recovery. My experience has made me think about all the woman in Tenerife who must be in a similar position to me. Women who are going through chemotherapy, women who have lost their hair and are struggling to cope. I’m lucky, my hair has grown back but it’s still very short. I know of other women who have lost their hair and are in need of a good quality wig to
to help you and tell you all about a new project called The Wig Exchange. The idea is; ladies can rent a wig on a temporary basis to use as and when they wish, then give it back to he exchange where it will be washed and prepared for the next time. Good idea, isn’t it. The Wig Exchange is in the early stages and needs some help to really get going. So, I’m appealing to all the ladies out there who have wigs which they don’t need anymore. And gentlemen too, of course. The Wig Exchange is looking for people to donate their wigs and want to link up with a Tenerife-based hairdresser who is willing to help.
help them feel better about themselves and not so self-conscious. It can be very disconcerting for some people when they lose their hair because sometimes it comes out in clumps and other times it can fall out altogether. The trouble is, wigs can be very expensive and some people can’t afford to buy one, let alone several different kinds to experiment with different styles and colours. Do you know of anywhere people can get hold of good quality wigs at a reasonable price? Sandi, Golf del Sur
They need a professional who will wash and maintain the wigs so they can be rented out again and again. On top of that, they’re looking for drop off points around the island where women can collect and return their wigs. The Wig Exchange is a non-profit group so any rental money paid to hire the wigs will be put back into the group and any profit will be given to the local branch of Ámate – the Spanish charity dedicated to helping women with breast cancer.
Dear Sandi, Firstly, let me say I think you and all the other ladies suffering from breast cancer are to be admired for your bravery and courage. I’d love
So come on hairdressers help out the Wig Exchange – it’s for a great cause. Call the Orange Pages office on 922 703 121 and we’ll put you in touch.
LET’S ALL CLUB TOGETHER TO HELP HARD WORKING CHARITIES There are several charities all over Tenerife fundraising on behalf of good causes and helping people who are less fortune, vulnerable or suffering in some way. They all do a great job and depend on the generosity of Tenerife residents and tourists – and it’s thanks to the kind-hearted good people of Tenerife that many charities carry on giving to those in need. Orange Pages would like to put together a mini guide to all the charitable events that go on over the island and we’d like your help to tell us about what’s happening and when. This month Orange Pages is focusing on Amate – an organisation that supports woman with breast cancer. If you’re involved with a charity like Amate for example which helps to support women with breast cancer, then we want to hear from you. It’s a very sad fact that anyone reading this right now will probably know at least one woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. There are thousands of women all over Tenerife; wives, girlfriends, daughters, sisters, aunties, nieces and friends with the disease. Amate helps women like this and there are events happening all over the island to promote the good work of the Amate Association. Amate was created in March 2006 to help women who are affected by breast cancer. A group of women got together to start the association because they wanted to give women affect by the disease the chance to talk to someone else who has been through a similar experience. If you would like to get in touch with Amate, contact 922 220 564 or 618 382 615 or send an email to amateasociacion@ gmail.com or visit their Facebook page.

The new Spanish Voluntary Disclosure Procedure (SVDP) came into effect on 30th November 2012, something that will affect every ex pat in Spain who spends more than 183 days in the country. As a Spanish resident, you can choose to have your UK income paid gross and then declare it on your annual tax returns in Spain. If you are in Spain for more than 183 days a year, you MUST complete an annual Spanish tax return. If you have a retirement plan in the UK and are now a non UK resident (spend more than 183 days in Spain) you
