Business of the month Falls are the source of most injuries in bathrooms. In one year 234,000 people 15 and older visited emergency rooms due to injuries suffered in bathrooms. Most of these injuries were caused by falls, which can be especially dangerous for older adults. Activities that take place in the bathroom, such as showering and bathing, are a simple part of most people’s daily routine. Yet, slips in the bath and falls in the shower or from the toilet may cause serious injuries.

Katie is 12 years old, underweight and suffering from a very painful condition in her hooves called laminitis. She was offered free to Live Arico PAWS as a last resort to avoid her being destroyed, as her owner could not afford to look after her any longer. We have committed to her lifetime care, and she is staying at Finca Cabuquero, the Riding Stables in Aldea Blanca where owners Jim and Sara have kindly reduced her livery fees in recognition of our efforts to save her life. Already the vet has been to microchip and vaccinate Katie and she had to be sedated as her shoes were removed by excellent farrier Jaime, as she was in so much pain. It is understood she was ridden from Adeje to Mount Teide and back, on the road, which has added to her suffering. It will be a long haul, perhaps as long as 2 years, but we are with her every step of the way. She obviously cannot be ridden at this time. Katie has her own page on our website, www.livearico.com where we post regular updates and photos, but you are more than welcome to visit her from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 – 2pm, or 4 – 8pm. She loves carrots if you could take a few, or the odd juicy apple. We are looking for sponsors for Katie. If you can commit to €10 per month towards her fees you will receive a framed photo of yourself with Katie, a copy of which will go on Katie’s page on the website. One off donations can also be made in either of our charity shops, at the stables, or via paypal at livearico@gmail.com We are planning an event at the stables very soon, and will keep you posted.

HELP WITH REGISTRATION OF POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DOGS We are finding it more and more difficult to re-home pit bulls and their crosses these days. Whilst new regulations are sensible, people, especially nonSpanish speakers, can be put off by the process of complying. Anyone familiar with the breed will know that in the right hands they can make fantastic, loyal dogs, and it saddens us that the fear of red tape is meaning they are left on the shelf. So, let us help you. For any “potentially dangerous dog” adopted from Live Arico PAWS, we offer advice, guidance, translation service and accompaniment to relevant appointments to ensure your dog complies with current legislation. For more information please contact us via our Facebook page, Live Arico P.A.W.S. Tenerife, where you will find some fabulous dogs for adoption.
our shops in Los Cristianos, (Calle Reveron near the harbour playpark); and San Eugenio, (opposite Hotel La Nina, near Amandas Bar.) Generally, we open 10 – 4 weekdays and until 2pm Saturdays. We have some great bargains including designer labels in our Aladdin’s Caves. Come and see us. Please “Like” our Facebook page!! There are over 4,700 followers now, and we find this a fantastic way to let everyone know of dogs for adoption, and general day to day news….thank you for reading our news. Until next time, have a great June, and we will see you next month.
This month ‘O.P’ has been to visit PetEX featured below. PetEX are EXperts in EXporting and EXclusive boarding of your pets. O.P met up with Rocky (pictured on right). They made friends immediately. Rocky is now 11 months old and was found at just 4 months old wandering the streets. He has been in foster care for 7 months but told O.P that he is desperate for a permanent home. If you think that you can provide a caring home for Rocky please email O.P at his address below or contact Shirley at PetEX. Shirley would like to apologise to Pets@Home for a violation of their copyright last month. PetEX will not use the brand in their name, although O.P says he loves the new name and catchphrase. STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: GEMINI
(22nd May to 21st June)
The butterfly of the zodiac and probably the easiest to recognise of all the signs as they tend to talk a lot and are very unpredictable! The GOAL in life for Gemini is to unravel the secrets of the world by seeing everything. Perception is more important than meaning and thinking. It is important for Geminis to live an intense and varied life and maintain a totally receptive state so all the ideas they come across are absorbed. They may feel somewhat confused with so much information inside them but that’s alright. Confusion is OK for Gemini – it’s allowed! They tend to have a broad spectrum of knowledge although they are capable of depth and concentration when necessary. The trouble is they get easily distracted by something of more interest. Too many things catch their attention as they find it hard to shut out external stimuli. Their eyes are always moving when you’re talking to them which can be rather disconcerting. They get bored easily and hate to be tied down – deep involvement or commitment can be difficult for them. They are very child-like in their lively interest in learning. They have great curiosity and love to find out how things and people tick. There’s a great hunger for information and they are adept at gathering and correlating facts and broadcasting them…..they can prove anything with facts and rarely lose an argument. The urge to communicate is so powerful that they make good journalists. They often drift along in life uncertain what to do because so much is interesting and they are good at lots of things. The SHADOW is that Gemini has to pay a price for this restlessness. It makes it hard for them to sustain close relationships. They don’t like long intense discussions especially about emotions – it makes them feel trapped – they prefer to joke about it or disappear very quickly. They need lots of freedom and hate being told what to do. They will even resort to deception if they feel pinned down by anyone. Their constant pursuit of things may leave little time for people and they might find themselves with lots of acquaintances but few close friends which is a sad lonely fate for such gregarious people with a need to communicate. Gemini is the least introspective of all the signs – it takes a real crisis for them to look at their own motives. They actually have several personalities which they are usually unaware of themselves. The SYMBOL for the sign is the TWINS. The Greek myth associated with the sign is that of Castor and Pollux – twins hatched from an egg laid by Leda after she mated with Zeus who was disguised as a swan……Geminis certainly tend to fly high and are very good at mimicking. Both Castor and Pollux were brave and clever warriors, devoted to each other but one was human and one was divine. This caused problems when the mortal one died and they pleaded with Zeus to make a deal as they didn’t want to be separated ….. Geminis are great at making deals! Zeus allowed them to alternate their immortality so while one was on Earth the other was on Olympus with the Gods and then they could change places and spend some time together in the changeover period. This myth gives us some insight into the deeper meaning of Gemini – the two distinct sides to their personality. First – the divine – they have a spiritual awareness – a finely-tuned intuition and a sense of the unity of all things. This is part of the reason why they don’t take life or responsibilities very seriously because they know there’s more to it. This side of them tends to clash with the human side – their structured, analytical mind. They often block one side which can cause them a lot of anguish. This also explains the changeability of their moods – periods of light and dark, extroversion changing to introversion, negative to positive, which are as strange to the Gemini as to those around them. When in the divine side they can seem extremely charming, they shine and sparkle but if they get stuck there they may think they are entitled to sponge on other people’s time or money because the last thing they want to do is admit they are

human and have to work for a living! Suddenly they may go the other way and feel alienated and stuck in a mortal body – becoming fearful of life, over-analytical, mistrust others and become cunning, cynical and even unpleasant. People around them can get quite upset when Gemini is in a dark mood – but they shouldn’t take it too personally. It’s a natural cycle and is confusing for the Gemini to be so inconsistent. FINAL ADVICE for Gemini: it helps to know when you are being Castor and when Pollux – you are probably good at talking to yourself anyway. It’s important to bridge the opposites in yourself – accept the male and the female, the mind and the emotions, the spiritual and the material, the light and the dark. Try to stand in the middle and be both because they are not at odds with each other – they’re complimentary. One can help and support the other. If you can’t face your own dark side you will project it onto others. Also it may help to have two or more jobs or perhaps a job and an important hobby so you don’t get bored. It’s OK to go in several directions at the same time. You’ll only get restless if you stay with one thing. The fidgeters, the chain smokers, the nail biters are often Geminis who feel tied down and trapped. NB. Your sun sign is only a part of your whole chart. The position of all the other planets needs to be taken into account when summarising your personality. Contact Hara for a full analysis.
Gemini in 2013: 2013 is a year for Geminis to really spread their wings! A time for launching new enterprises, travel, understanding other cultures, education and also good for any legal dealings. It is a year to feel inspired and cultivate new hopes and dreams. The first quarter of the year is great for career activity, cultivating contacts and finding direction. The spring may bring new beginnings where finances are concerned. You are able to capitalise on your assets whether they be internal or external. You need to be a bit cautious where joint finances are concerned though. The end of the year is better for joint resources. With Saturn in Scorpio you need to pay attention to your own health and fitness. In order to clean up your act you will need some self-discipline. The end of the year and into 2014 is a time to get lots done ….. great for creative, dynamic enterprises. This is also good time for romance, investment, children, and enjoying being centre-stage. This is just based on your sun-sign (Aries) but if you would like a more thorough analysis of the year ahead based on all the other planets, then please contact Hara on 922 333945 or 645988571 or email her on hara.davis@yahoo. com. Hara will take your birth details and send you a CD of the analysis. She does relationship charts and babies & children. See her website for more details: www.astrologyhara.co.uk Hara Davis is a professional astrologer living in the north of Tenerife.

TOURISTS ARE SPENDING MORE IN SPAIN
Holidaymakers in Spain have spent more cash in the first third of 2013 compared to the same time last year. On top of that, tourists in the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, account for around 30 per cent of the total money spent – 7 per cent more than the same months in 2012. According to figures from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, the daily spend has risen to 110 Euros while the average spend per tourist increased by just below 5 per cent to 951 Euros. UK tourists were the biggest spenders.

HAVE YOU SEEN IT YET?
NEW LAW FOR RENTERS AND SELLERS
Fast and Furious 6, which was partly filmed in Tenerife, is now being shown in cinemas around the world.
The laws regarding renting and selling your property in Tenerife have changed – as from June 1st, 2013; an Energy Performance Certificate is required.
Catch Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez star in the latest action movie which is part of a long-running series. Parts of the film were filmed on the island last September and October and included car chase scenes shot on the newly built section of the TF1 before heading towards Gui de Isora. According to the Tenerife Tourism Board, shooting the film here brought a massive 8 million Euros into the island’s economy.
Spanish law is catching up with legislation that has been in force in the UK for some time. Now anyone selling or renting properties is obliged to provide the certificate which is valid for ten years. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) has been introduced by certain countries who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. Under the new law, the EPC will detail the carbon emissions of a property. Anyone wanting the certificate needs to contact a certified assessor who will give your property a score and grade system from A (the best) to G (the worst) relating to its energy efficiency. Getting the certificate will cost around 200 Euros and those who do not comply will face heavy fines. For more information go to www.gobcan.es

Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages are the main source of the important fats called omega-3s. Two of them, EPA and DHA are not found in any other foods. These fats have a variety of benefits, including offering some protection against the decline of brain power and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. They are also anti-inflammatory, helping to minimise the pains of arthritis and rheumatism. In addition, they can help prevent blood clots, coronary disease and strokes.
ARE YOU EATING CORRECTLY? Eating correctly not only fights ageing, but it can also protect you against diseases associated with age. These 20 foods should be part of your regular diet: Apples are rich in two plant compounds called catechins, and in quercetin. All help to prevent strokes, heart disease and cancer. Quercetin has also been shown to improve the firmness of collagen, which helps the skin to keep its elasticity. Apples are also rich in the soluble fibre pectin, which helps to lower blood cholesterol. Lastly, the flesh of apples contains the mineral boron, which helps to prevent calcium loss and provides some protection against osteoporosis. Avocados contain an amino acid called glutathione, which strengthens our defences against heart disease and cancer. They are also rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant important for good skin condition and wound healing. Avocados are also a good source of monounsaturated fat, which is linked to lower risk of heart disease. Whole grain barley and other whole grains, such as rye and oats, contain phytic acid which has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancers. Barley is particularly rich in chemicals called protease inhibitors, which also have properties that combat cancer, including breast and bowel cancer. Whole grains are also high in fibre, which helps to keep the digestive and circulatory systems healthy. Blackcurrants are one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, at around 130mg per 100g when stewed. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant which helps keep the immune system healthy, keeps the skin in good condition and helps wounds and fractures to heal. High levels of vitamin C are linked with the lowest risk of heart disease. Blackcurrants also contain other implant compounds such as lutein (see Broccoli) and anthocyanins (see Blueberries), and the oil from their seeds has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, relieving arthritic pain. Vitamin C from foods may offer more protection than supplements. Discovered in recent tests to be the most powerful antioxidants of all, blueberries have the strongest potential to prevent the diseases of old age. It has been found that 100g a day can
stimulate the growth of new brain cells and may help prevent memory loss. Blueberries are also rich in a plant chemical group called anthocyanins, which help oxygenate the skin and keep it looking young. Many other red, purple and blue berries have similar properties.Broccoli is high in antioxidant carotenoids, vitamin C and indoles, which help fight lung, breast and colon cancers. It is rich in lipoic acid, a fatty acid linked with increased brain power and energy. As well as high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, which help keep vision healthy, it’s the best vegetable source of vitamin E which is linked with protection against Alzheimer’s disease. It is rich in fibre, and a natural source of chromium, which helps to regulate blood sugars. Carrots are the best source of carotenes compounds which have a strong antioxidant effect that is important in helping to prevent cancers. Regular carrot intake can also help protect against macular degeneration and cataracts, help minimise night blindness and reduce harmful cholesterol. Carotenes also protect the skin from sun damage and cancers. Eating carrots cooked with a little oil or fat encourages carotene absorption. Celery is renowned for reducing blood pressure, possibly because it contains the plant chemical 3-n-butyl phthalid, as well as apigenin, one of the flavonoid plant chemicals. It is also an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that balances body fluids and can lower blood pressure in some. Celery also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce pain from arthritis, as well as helping to beat fluid retention. One study found that celery is one of the vegetables most strongly linked with protection from bowel cancer. Fresh, organic eggs that are certified salmonella-free are an excellent food. They contain high levels of selenium which may be lacking in the diet and have cancer- and heart disease fighting qualities. They’re a good source of iodine, which can help to promote healthy thyroid activity and also contain lecithin, a substance that can help to prevent heart disease and gallstones. Eggs are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E and zinc both lacking in many older people’s diets - as well as the B group, which helps nerve health and stress, and protein. Aim to have about four eggs

a week unless you have specifically been told to avoid cholesterol in your diet. Flax seeds sometimes called linseeds are tiny golden seeds from the flax plant. They are one of the few plant foods rich in alpha-linolenic acid which the body converts to the fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fats have a host of important anti-ageing properties, they help to prevent blood clots, stroke and heart disease, may improve brain power and lift depression, can help arthritis, improve insulin sensitivity and are vital in retaining smooth skin. Flax seeds also contain lignans, oestrogen like plant compounds that may reduce menopausal symptoms. Fresh garlic contains several compounds, the most important of which is allicin. This has been shown to protect against high blood pressure, infections, candida, indigestion, stomach ulcers and bowel disorders. Several studies have shown that it can reduce harmful cholesterol by about 12 per cent, and inhibits new growth of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart attack or stroke. Garlic may also inhibit the growth of cancer cells and strengthen the immune system. Leafy dark green vegetables, such as Savoy cabbage, kale, and spring greens, are good sources of two carotenoids which have been shown to help prevent age related macular degeneration and cataracts. Greens are also a good source of easily absorbed calcium to help maintain strong bones, and are rich in potassium, which helps protect against calcium loss. In addition, they’re a good source of vitamins C and E. Several herbs are strong antioxidants, even when used in small amounts. Thyme, oregano, rosemary, sage, basil and coriander all contain high levels of phytochemicals, which can help ward off heart disease and cancers. Nuts are a good source of magnesium, which is vital for energy levels. Magnesium can help keep muscles supple and prevent aches and pains, and may also lower the risk of osteoporosis. Almonds, Brazils and peanuts are good for helping to build or maintain muscle mass and help protect against glaucoma, diabetes and high blood pressure. Research in the USA has shown that just two 25g portions of fresh nuts a week reduced death from heart disease in men by up to 47 per cent. Oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines

Although olive oil is almost 100 per cent fat, it is rich in nutrients and compounds that can help protect against age related disease. It is high in monounsaturated fats, which lower levels of harmful LDL cholesterol while protecting the levels of “good” HDL cholesterol, and thus helps fight heart disease and stroke. Olive oil also contains squalene and oleuropein, which are powerful antioxidants, protecting blood cholesterol from oxidation. This antioxidant effect may also reduce the risk of some cancers, particularly of the breast and colon. Top-quality, cold-pressed oils contain more of the protective compounds. The onion family, including garlic and leeks, are good detoxifiers and are also antiseptic and antibacterial. The sulphur compounds they contain are also linked with protection against strokes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancers. Just 1g of onion a day is enough to help strengthen the bones. Onions are rich in flavonoids and potassium, which can reduce blood pressure and keep the arteries healthy, and the onion family may also help to keep blood sugar levels even by regulating insulin production. Most spices are strong antioxidants and have a variety of beneficial effects. Ginger is an antiinflammatory and can help ease the pain of arthritis. Chillies contain the plant chemical capsaicin, which is a great reliever of general aches and pains, and coriander seeds can lower blood pressure. Soya beans contain high levels of plant oestrogens and magnesium, both of which may help to minimise menopausal symptoms. Soya beans are high in soluble fibre, and have also been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Soya protein helps build and maintain collagen and elastin, both important for keeping skin in youthful condition.Tomatoes are rich in the carotenoid lycopene, which provides some protection against cancer and heart disease. Recent trials have found that women who eat a lot of lycopene have lower risks of ovarian or breast cancer, while in men it helps prevent prostate cancer. Tomatoes are also a good source of lipoic acid, which helps increase energy levels and improve brain power in some people. Small, ripe tomatoes tend to contain the highest levels of lycopene and cooking them helps absorption.

Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages It would be an exaggeration to claim that political risk in London has replaced worries about the euro zone. However, if the coalition continues to create policy on the hoof, investors will have to ask themselves if Britain’s pound really is as safe a bet as the stressed euro, especially if it begins to look as though electoral sentiment is swinging towards Britain’s withdrawal from the EU.
A month on from news of Nelson’s wound off the coast of Tenerife and another naval story is attached to the island. A retired RN officer, Chris Enmarch, has been arrested together with his retired naval gunboat. The Spanish authorities became suspicious when they found that the vessel, which is registered as a pleasure boat, was armed with two machine gun emplacements and a pair of cannon. There is no truth in the story that the impounded warship will be pressed into service to defend the euro, not least because it doesn’t particularly need defending at the moment. Yes, in the last month the euro has fallen by a cent and a quarter against the pound and by a little more than that against the US dollar but these are not big moves. The resolution of Cyprus’s bailout and the formation of a coalition government in Rome removed the two most urgent crises facing the single currency. There might be another problem brewing in Slovenia but, for the moment, the heat is off. That is not to say the euro zone economy is set fair for recovery and growth. Following the surprise
news that UK gross domestic product (GDP) grew by a provisional 0.3% in the first quarter, the story from Euroland was far less positive. German GDP expanded by a barely-noticeable 0.1%; enough to avoid recession but no more use than that. Portugal’s economy shrank by -0.3% and Italy’s by -0.5%. The -0.2% declines for France and Euroland as a whole condemned them to the dreaded tripledip recession.

The economic story from Britain is more encouraging. Investors were particularly keen on the Bank of England’s upgraded forecast for the second quarter. It predicted growth of 0.5% where it had previously been looking for 0.3%. Upgraded BoE forecasts have been such a rarity in recent years that the appearance of one sent the pound higher. On the other side of that coin is the growing political risk as the coalition leadership plucks legislative ideas seemingly from thin air to foist them on the rank and file. The picture might be an amusing one if it was just the prime minister sending notes to Tory party workers telling them he loves them. But twice in mid-May there was the bizarre sight of Conservative MPs voting against the government while the opposition voted in its support.
Spanish Property Ownership Beneficiaries of foreign nationals who own property in Spain could end up paying tax in two jurisdictions When buying a holiday home or retiring abroad the last thing on many people’s minds are the tax implications which can prove daunting. The tax system in Spain is very different to the UK, can be unfamiliar, and without proper planning for when you die your beneficiaries could be handed a very large tax bill and be forced to either walk away from the property or take out loans to meet the debt. In Spain your beneficiary must pay the tax on the amount that they inherit. In the UK your estate could be charged Inheritance Tax (IHT) on your worldwide assets which will include the property in Spain. As the two taxes are not the same one cannot be offset against the other under the Dual Taxation Treaty. Common myths offered to our clients, as, solutions, prior to them seeking Wincham’s advice are: Purchasing / Transferring the property into your children’s names Using either of these methods you would need to pay tax to keep your own property should your children predecease you. There are also gift tax implications both in Spain and the UK. You would have to trust your child to make a Will leaving the property to you and hope that they do not divorce or fall into serious debt both of which could mean you may ultimately lose your property. A Spanish Will shields you from Spanish IHT This is not true and a Spanish Will can often complicate matters as it may conflict with an earlier Will prepared in the UK and does not eradicate IHT. A Spanish Will cannot be varied after death and therefore limits the options of the beneficiaries. If there is only a UK Will then, with agreement of the beneficiaries, the Will can be varied to accommodate the inheritor’s wishes should this be required. The only requirement of the Spanish authorities before the property can be transferred to the new owners names is to be presented with a death certificate and Grant of Probate from the UK, translated, notarised and apostiled. There are changes scheduled to take place on the 17th August 2015 within the EU which will mean that a Will should state the intended succession jurisdiction. It will no longer be possible to assume that your place of domicile will dictate where your Estate is to be dealt with which could result in your foreign property being subject to
Probate in the country it is situated in and therefore you may not be able to leave your assets to whom you wish. Taking out a mortgage will reduce the tax liability on death The value of the asset will be reduced by the amount outstanding on the mortgage, however the banks often insist that life policies are taken out which settle the mortgage on death and the beneficiaries are then inheriting the whole of the unencumbered property. Even if there is not a life policy then a substantial debt remains outstanding which will have to be paid before the property can be transferred to the beneficiaries. Don’t inform the authorities of a death for 4 ½ years Waiting 41/2 years before notifying the authorities of the death means that the Statute of Limitations has passed and therefore no tax should be payable. This is tax evasion and you would be committing several criminal offences. The Wincham Solution Our solution simplifies matters by assisting Clients to invest their Spanish property into a UK company (Wincham can provide this), of which the clients are both Directors and shareholders, ensuring they remain in control of the asset whilst eradicating Spanish IHT. Contrary to popular belief there is no 7-10% Property Transfer Tax payable on this transaction. Our method enables clients to utilise Spanish legislation to conveniently own and maintain their holiday / retirement home within a corporate structure in the most tax efficient way. Some Spanish paralegals recommend the use of an Off-Shore Company to own a Spanish property, this type of company is subject to an additional 3% tax burden each year unlike a UK company which is not classed as Off-Shore and therefore does not have this additional 3% tax to pay.
