Business of the month Today’s modern aluminium windows and doors offer maximum security, thermal efficiency and are state of the art. Aluminium windows have gained popularity in the later half of the 20th century. For many years they were perceived as only available in silver, surrounded by high maintenance hardwood sub frames and above all prone to condensation. This may have been the case once, but it’s certainly not the case any more. Aluminium door and window products have advanced significantly in recent years benefitting from new technology, advances in fabrication and with excellent thermal properties, available in A, B and C rated forms. This material has many advantages over plastic, gaining an increased market share, particularly in recent years with many new developments of flats and contemporary houses. It is rare nowadays for such modern buildings to have plastic windows and rightly so. The Major advantage aluminium has over pvcu is simple. It is Aesthetics. Look at the difference between the aluminium window right and the upvc left. In the modern architectural style, pvc profiles are too large and without having to use too many coupling and reinforcing profiles you cannot achieve the same look it can be argued.
Aluminium provides not only greater strength and the desired slim sight lines but is also more resistant to the elements and thus not likely to warp or rot.
It is a material with a high strength-to-weight ratio that is easily formed into many shapes and configurations, remaining the most common commercial framing material. Traditional Aluminium window frames are also best suited for light or heavy commercial buildings such as schools, restaurants, and government buildings. The introduction of polyamide technology in recent years take aluminium door and windows to a new level – offering improvements in thermal insulation, increased strength and the opportunity for dual colour finish – different colours on the internal and external faces. A plastic woodgrain window will never replicate the perfect detailing of this aluminium window with a profiled transom and authentic looking wood finish that is not a foil. The real difference can be seen when you view the products side by side. Aluminium windows are “crafted” there are proper mitre cuts, there are joints, there is an overall look of a properly manufactured product. Look at the welded corners of a pvc product and you will immediately see the difference in quality of manufacture. Doors more so – in my view a cheap plastic front door with an infill panel looks nothing like an aluminium door – again go see and compare. Above all aluminium offers The only advantage upvc has over aluminium is cost. By the slim sight lines so it’s nature aluminium is a more expensive material and often required. realistically you are not comparing like for like. Cost issue aside, there is no advantage pvc has over aluminium. It can be comfortably argued that plastic Muniglass Systems have opened a state of the art window no longer has the showroom in Chafiras. To arrange an appointment or for advantage.

TENERIFE HELPS TO WIN MEDALS
LIFE IS A BEACH FOR TENERIFE DOGS
Outstanding sports facilities in Tenerife helped swimmers shine when Barcelona hosted world swimming championships. One in three of the medallists had trained on the island, specifically in the T3 high performance centre in La Caleta which attracts all categories of sportsmen, women and teams. Cabildo vice-president, Carlos Alonso said hundreds of professionals from throughout Europe were choosing to come to Tenerife to train because of its exceptional climate and excellent infrastructure.
The championships featured 96 finalists who trained here and 36 medallists, a record which speaks for itself, he added.

Dog parks and beaches seem to be catching on across Tenerife. Last week, La Laguna council announced it was allocating part of a square in one of the capital’s districts especially to exercise dogs. It follows on from Guimar’s decision to allocate the first doggie beach on the island. This becomes the second in the Canary Islands after the opening of a dog beach in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in May. The doggie space in La Laguna is in the district of San Bartolomé de Geneto, specifically in the plaza de San Felipe. It has a perimeter fence for the safety of users.
The Mayor, Carmen Luisa Castro Dorta said they were very pleased with the outcome it had been welcomed by residents and tourists alike, as well as veterinary experts.

Cross Ferries
Canary Island hopping may become more difficult in the future if the Canarian Government doesn’t pay it’s debts to ferry company Fred Olsen soon. The company claims that 18 million Euros is still outstanding from 2011 and if the debt isn’t paid they will be forced to cut some routes that aren’t bringing in the dinero. Most threatened would probably be the Los Cristianos to El Hierro route.

FILM REVIEW
THE FILM OBLIVION (director: Joseph Kosinski; 2013) BY ANTHONY LANE
Hollywood’s funny way of celebrating Barack Obama’s reelection is to put the White House through as much hell as possible just to prove its resilience. In September, Channing Tatum will hold the fort against an invasion in Roland Emmerich’s ‘White House Down’. However, if you can’t wait for two hours of American national monuments going up in flames, Antoine Fuqua’s seemingly identical ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ (the title is military code for, well, ‘White House Down’) delivers unrelenting action. The film nods to ‘Independence Day’ – the standard by which all such films must be measured – by taking place on July 5, but the chief model is ‘Die Hard’. With Washington under siege and hunky president Aaron Eckhart taken hostage, it’s left to disgraced aide Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) to enter the White House and see off the invaders with bullets, torture and one-liners. ‘Let’s play a game of “fuck off”,’ he snarls at chief villain Rick Yune. ‘You go first.’ Occasional segues to the hostage chamber (where Eckhart and feisty Defence Secretary Melissa Leo are kicked around with gay abandon) and the negotiation room (where Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett furrow their brows and wait for their cheques to clear) are seemingly designed to allow Butler a fag break between bouts of bad-assery. The thrills and the effects are cheap, but this is in hard-driving, goodhumoured command of its own silliness. White House up, at least until September.
“OBLIVION” By 2154, Earth is ruined and all but deserted. There are a few alien scavengers left over from a catastrophic war, but humanity is represented by only Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and his partner, Victoria (Andrea Riseborough), who lead a sleek and frictionless existence, mostly in midair. All the other people, allegedly, have moved to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, and good luck to them. Jack is a service engineer, and much of his time is spent unaccompanied, buzzing through the skies or crossing the cratered landscape on a motorbike, with a determined jut of the jaw. Echoes of sci-fi, far and near, resound through Joseph Kosinski’s new film, although its most immediate debt is to Duncan Jones’s modestly budgeted “Moon” (2009), in which Sam Rockwell played a lunar loner; Cruise’s solitude is scarcely less intense, but it sits uneasily in so grand and costly a project. The plot defies—and may not deserve—explication, and, when other characters enter the fray (and even when two of them are played by Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko), they make surprisingly little impact. The exception is Riseborough, whose graceful spookiness is a challenge to Cruise’s control; while the movie around her, though buoyantly shot by Claudio Miranda, feels ever more grounded and stuck, the figure she cuts, you feel, is not quite of this world.
BOOK REVIEW - BOOK REVIEW The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook
A story set among the ruins of post-war Germany fails to ignite, says John Preston.
By John Preston
In post-war Hamburg the streets swarm with feral children, decomposing corpses lie unburied – “a phantom city comprised only of ash and rubble”.
A British army officer, Colonel Lewis, is assigned a house that has been requisitioned from the Germans, an enormous wedding-cakey affair “built in the grand style”. But rather than kick out the family who live there, as is normal procedure, Lewis suggests they should all live there together – he with his recently arrived and overwrought wife, Rachael, and Lubert, the German widower with his awkward adolescent daughter. Rhidian Brook has clearly come up with a terrific setting for his second novel – his first, The Testimony of Taliesin Jones won the Somerset Maugham prize. Suspicion,
resentment and misunderstanding haunt this city. British people arriving are given a leaflet telling them how to behave towards Germans: “Don’t try to be kind. This is regarded as weakness… Don’t show hatred. The Germans will be flattered.” The Germans, however, seem beyond feeling anything. Exhausted, starving and utterly demoralised, they drift about like purposeless wraiths. But the British also have their ghosts, their demons. Rachael and Lewis’s reunion turns out to be rather less joyous than anticipated. Instead they circle around one another warily, his packets of government-issue prophylactics remaining firmly in their wrappers. Amid this moral and physical exhaustion, some people find a strange kind of liberation, a chance to slough off their old restraints and behave with the “unchecked confidence of New World explorers”. While the backdrop here is intriguingly stark, the foreground stubbornly fails to ignite. Part of the problem is that the sinews of Brook’s plot simply aren’t strong, or clear, enough. There are brief flurries of tension, but it’s never long before they sink into the dust. And there’s a similar unevenness about the writing. At times it’s richly atmospheric, at others throbbingly melodramatic. The biggest problem, though, is that priggish and passive Lewis and Rachael are drawn with such careful dabs of monochrome that I yearned for splashes of colour. Brook writes about “the subtle and devious manoeuvrings of the heart”. Yet they’re manoeuvrings that, for the most part, remain frustratingly out of reach.

EGYPT CRISIS BOOSTS TENERIFE TOURISM The Canary Islands are already seeing dividends from cruise ship diversions due to the crisis in Egypt. A number of companies have cancelled routes through the Red Sea and at least two have announced new itineraries to take in the Canaries instead. Tourism chiefs expect more to follow. MSC Cruises said “safety was their number one priority” which was why they had chosen the Canaries this winter instead of Egypt as planned. “The MSC fleet only ever sails to the safest destinations,” the company announced on its website. The MSC Armonia cruises will depart from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on various dates between November 2013 and March 2014. They will be for seven nights and take in San Sebastian on La Gomera, Funchal, Santa Cruz de La Palma and Santa Cruz on one schedule and Agadir, Casablanca, Puerto del Rosario and Arrecife on Lanzarote on the other. There will be 20 cruises in all and with MSC Armonia taking 2,199 passengers, there will be an estimated 40,000 tourists discovering the Canaries. Tourism chiefs expect “a considerable economic contribution to the archipelago”.

The Healthiest Way To Lose Weight The healthiest way to lose weight is neither
crash diets nor bursts of exercise. The body likes slow changes in terms of food and exercise. For example, someone who hasn't exercised for years shouldn't rush into running miles a day or pounding the treadmill. Not only will the struggle to do so leave you feeling disheartened and demotivated, you're also far more likely to injure yourself and set your fitness levels back further. The same goes for people who suddenly start starving themselves. Diets that severely restrict calories or the types of food 'allowed' can lead you to be deficient in the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs. So, if you need to lose weight, what should you do? Exercise: one 20 minute walk every lunch hour. Alcohol: none in the week, two small glasses of wine on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Food: no chocolate or biscuits in the week, choose healthy snacks such as fruit, trim all fat from meat, eat no fried or fast food. For each week list your targets concerning alcohol, exercise and your food plan. Each day should then be listed in a simple chart and items you have had should be written down. It is also important to make a note of your mood and any comments you would like to get off your chest for each day.
Be patient and persevere
It might take a week or two before you notice any changes, but they will steadily appear. After the first month you'll be able to see the results and measure them in terms of looser fitting clothes. Keeping your motivation up is one of the most difficult aspects of dieting. There will be days when healthy eating
goes out the window, and there will be weeks where you may not lose any weight – or put a little back on. This is normal for everyone – dieters or not – so don't let it undo your plans for a slimmer you. You're not doing anything 'wrong', but you may need to look at your plan. Do you need to increase your activity levels? Make a few more changes to your diet? Put more effort into sticking to your current plan?
What is overweight?
The other side of this is to make sure you celebrate your goals. While there's joy enough in stepping on the scales and seeing them dip lower, be sure to mark long-term progress with a reward – such as new clothes or time off from domestic chores. Celebrating is also a way to involve your nearest and dearest – it's up to you whether you want their encouragement in the form of gentle reminders not to eat certain foods. But support from other people can get you through the bumpy patches.
Doctors use BMI to assess weight.
Health benefits of weight loss
To calculate your BMI, you'll need to know your weight in kilos and your height in metres, then follow the example below.
Studies show that overweight women who lose between 10lb and 20lb halve their risk of developing diabetes. For men, the risk of heart problems reduces considerably.
Generally, we gain weight as we age. A few pounds over the years are not a problem, but people who gain more than 20lb compared to their weight as an 18-year-old will rapidly increase their risk of health problems due to that extra weight. In particular, women increase their risk of heart attack and double their risk of dying from cancer. It may seem like these are problems to worry about in the future, but time flies by and tomorrow becomes today. By keeping your weight in the healthy range, you're less likely to be troubled by illnesses in your later years.
A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is healthy. If you have a BMI of more than 25, you're overweight. Over 30 is obese. Over 40 is morbidly obese.
Multiply your height by itself, eg 1.7x1.7= 2.89. 2. Divide your weight (eg 80kg) by this figure. 3. 80 ÷ 2.89= 27.7. 27.7 is the BMI.

VIRGO (24th August to 22nd September)
HARASCOPE D.F.Astrol.S.
by Hara Davis
The GOAL for Virgos is a difficult one – perfection, which involves bringing together all the different parts of the personality and synthesising them into a harmonious whole. It integrates the first 5 signs of the zodiac – the rash impulsive courage of Aries, the building and acquiring of stability of Taurus, the curiosity and fascination with ideas of Gemini, the need for warmth, family and roots of Cancer and the Leo need to be a creative individual. Virgos are good at discriminating, classifying and categorising – finding out where everything fits in. They are never lazy but never satisfied either – perfection, after all, is pretty hard to attain and Virgos are determined to improve themselves, to grow and transform. To do this a certain humility is necessary which Virgos often forget. It’s an earthy sign and Virgos are practical, orderly and efficient – perhaps the most realistic sign of the zodiac. The symbol for Virgo is the VIRGIN and this doesn’t mean that Virgos are prudish or lacking in sexual interest! The original deeper meaning of the word ‘virgin’ is that which is whole and integrated. So Virgos need to be self-contained, not needing to capture or possess the partner they attract, not dependant on security or the need to conciliate anyone. They are whole in themselves. External events may conspire to help Virgos achieve this state. For example, their partner can’t give them the security they hoped for, or they have to spend a period of their lives alone. There’s a real inner need to live from their own values, and relationships can be dissatisfying or catastrophic if Virgos try to avoid the responsibility of their own nature. If Virgos choose a safe, secure path of going along with other people it can lead to a feeling of pointlessness. If they are loyal to themselves, life will be rich and rewarding. Virgos often need to be alone to find out about their inner nature. Virgos often express themselves through service of some kind. They need to feel useful but often stay in the background as advisors or helpers leaving someone else to be up front. Virgos don’t just do a job they become the service they offer. Now this leads us to the SHADOW side of the sign – Virgos can become too self-sacrificing. This is because of an awareness of their own faults and deficiencies. In fact, they are often over-critical of themselves which leads to doubt, uncertainty and a very destructive negative self-image. They never admit to their own faults and hate being criticised by others. They need to accept their faults as well as their virtues – learn to love themselves and then they will avoid the trap of having to make up for the badness in themselves by continuously self-sacrificing and helping others. Those negative Virgo traits of nitpicking, fretting and nagging might also disappear!
Externally seeming capable and cool, Virgos inner anxieties and worries can upset their digestion and emotional balance. Another Virgo trait is obsessiveness and this can manifest in many ways, perhaps in order and tidiness, but not all Virgos are like this. It may show up by trying to control their emotions. Virgos have a horror of being wrong or mistaken and they can be real ‘know-it-alls’ which can be very annoying and quite destructive in relationships. Over the years it can crush their partners’ creativity and spontaneity because no-one is ever allowed to know anything or find out anything before Virgo! There’s the ‘I told you so’ syndrome too – that smug, self-satisfied look that means they can do anything better than you and makes the other person feel like murder! All this stems from Virgos fear of letting go, fear of being out of control, fear of the unknown. It’s an attempt to control life so nothing will be threatening. If you show an insecure Virgo a new part of yourself they will criticise it; show spontaneity and they will try and crush it; tell them something new and they will pretend they knew it already. FINAL ADVICE for Virgos: Try to recognise your own faults honestly. Learn to trust yourself, others and life itself instead of demanding that everything conform to your standards. Mistakes, mess, chaos are all part of life and don’t always need tidying. Virgo realists are not always very realistic. They see the tangible reality but need to find and trust the intangible one. When they have become one with the unknown side then they can nurture, heal and serve in an effective way. It’s OK for Virgos to be mistaken, to act the fool, to gamble and to play.

Virgo in 2013: 2013 is a year of better communication and interaction with others, learning and getting out and about more. The first half of the year should have been good for changing life direction or opening doors where career is concerned….but you do have to make quite a big effort. The second half of the year should see an expansion in your circle of friends and progress towards your goals. You are changing the way you think and perceive life. It is a time of questioning and getting to the bottom of things. There may be changes in jointly held finances or possessions – all in your favour. Try and be flexible and welcome any innovations in your life. There may be a few blurred edges in relationships – don’t put anyone on a pedestal but try and see them for who they really are. You are regenerating yourself on a deep level this year in order to get more control of your life and take back your power. This should give you the self- worth that

SPOTLIGHT ON TENERIFE REGIONS …… EL DUQUE DESERVES ITS DUKE STATUS
Words by Gaynor Selby. Pictures by Jon Wilkinson
The pristine warm waters of Playa del Duque combine perfectly with the golden sand that makes up the kilometre long beach at one of south Tenerife’s most chic resorts.
Plaza del Duque. Playa del Duque is also home to the infamous Gran Bahía Del Duque, which many consider to be the best hotel in the south of the island. In fact, it’s so good it has more than five-stars, it’s known as a Gran Lugo hotel which basically means it doesn’t get any better than this. Rumour has it the likes of Shakira, Mariah Carey and Stephanie of Monaco have stayed here which is not surprising given its palatial style.
Nestled in the municipality of Costa Adeje this affluent, sophisticated resort is frequented by tourists from all over the world looking to add a touch of class to their Tenerife holiday. The promenade is lined with exclusive places to eat and drink that overlook the gorgeous man-made beach – a nice escape from Tenerife’s natural black volcanic sands. Check out the fattest sun bed mattresses on the beach too – although be prepared to pay that little bit extra for an extra special sunbathing experience. Cocktail makers and fruit sellers wander along the soft sand to tempt people with delicious drinks and snacks and there are plenty of ice-cream parlours, shops and cafés just off the beach to grab some refreshments. And if you really want to spoil yourself, check out the massage-onthe-sand service on offer. Heavenly.
Plaza Del Duque shopping centre, stunning by night The area’s crowning glory is the Plaza del Duque; a first-class commercial centre packed with unique boutiques and high quality shopping over 3 levels – the perfect place to go for those seeking out designer labels and high-end stores. You certainly will not find any When the sun goes down the resort is a wonderful place to sample fine-dining tourist junk here. Think more Cartier than castanets. Here, you’ll spot names like Ralf Lauren, Lacoste, Apriori, Escada, Jofre and Galerias Lorens to name but a few. Whether restaurants and exclusive cocktail bars looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. Choose from you want to window shop or treat yourself to something special, shopping is great in the the myriad of eateries along the promenade that offer cuisine from around the world. Many of the bars and restaurants have that lounge vibe about them and are the perfect spot to enjoy a meal and drinks with friends and family. There’s a couple of little courtyard style mini shopping areas too to wander around après eating or just take in the gorgeous sunsets here. Orange Pages gives Playa del Duque a massive 10 out of 10 in terms of rich offerings. It really is ‘a cut above’ in terms of shopping and dining. We love loads of places in Tenerife, but it’s hard not to be impressed with this place. The only thing residents and tourists need to consider is that visiting such an upmarket resort as this means upmarket price tags! But, it’s well worth it. (N.B – DUQUE MEANS DUKE IN SPANISH)
