Marion, Ohio is growing. It’s kind of a neat community. And we’re not going anywhere. Our families are here and the people are very supportive of our business. Midwesterners don’t think that we’re affected by global warming but energy is the most inflationary item that there is – without energy there’s nothing. We need a bipartisan approach when dealing with the energy crisis in this country. We would like to see a cleaner country, a country that our children can be proud of. Our wish for them is to go out and live the American dream, to enjoy and be thankful for living in this country. I think that it is a Mid-western Ohio value, that “we’re going to be ok.” Ohioans have always had an optimistic outlook and, given the times, things could always be worse. We’ll be fine.

I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ohio is middle-America in the best definition of the word. Cincinnati has been especially lucky economically. We have not been as severely hit with losses in steel and rustbelt automobile manufacturing as the rest of the country. Because we’ve had some important industry here in companies like Proctor and Gamble, Kroger, US Shoes, Federated and some major milling companies, we’ve been able to consistently weather the economic storms, past and present. I love Ohio because it’s the salt of the earth – it is real people. My dream for Ohio is that there has to be more joint ventures with universities and colleges in education. We need to get the brightest and the best to work hard and stay here. And there’s got to be a renewed commitment and investment in industry. It’s part of our history and it needs to be a part of our future. I’ve been called a liberal. I think it’s a great word. Liberal means fairness; it means treating people equally – treating people with respect. However, there is a word I hate – “tolerance.” Tolerance is the weakest word. What does “I’m tolerant of you” mean? Mere tolerance is not enough. We do not become a closer country by “tolerating” each other. We become closer by trying to understand each other and by forging an ongoing commitment to become a community that is totally integrated economically, politically and socially. For the first time, I feel like we’re moving in that direction. My forefathers came from Russia. I’m a first born American and have received the Ellis Island Award. I think it’s such an honor and exciting proposition to be an American – in Ohio – at this most amazing moment in time. I’m glad I’m here to see it all unfold.
