Market Overview
The Maldives is celebrating a record-breaking year in tourism, with 2024 marking a historic achievement. The destination has reached a new milestone, welcoming its two millionth tourist of the year and officially hitting its target for 2024. Surpassing the 1.87 million arrivals recorded in 2023, the Maldives reaffirms its status as one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations.
As of 29th December, the Ministry of Tourism recorded an impressive 2,034,223 tourist arrivals for 2024. This marks a 9.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023, which saw 1,864,795 arrivals, and a significant rise from the 1,663,619 arrivals recorded during the same timeframe in 2022.
China continues to lead as the largest source market, contributing 12.9% of total arrivals with 262,945 visitors. Russia ranks second, holding an 11.0% market share with 223,273 arrivals, while the United Kingdom comes in third with 179,883 arrivals, representing 8.8% of the market.
The average length of stay in 2024 remains consistent at 7.7 days, with daily arrivals averaging 5,589. Resorts dominate the accommodation sector, accounting for 67% of the total operational bed capacity. This year, the overall capacity of tourist facilities increased from 61,562 beds in 2023 to 63,248 beds, reflecting the continued expansion of resorts and guesthouses across the archipelago.
February 2024 saw a record-breaking performance, with over 217,394 tourist arrivals. That month also marked a new milestone for the Maldives, with the highest number of arrivals in a single day—10,214 visitors on 10th February 2024.
Monthly Tourist Arrivals
A primary driver of this growth has been the expansion of direct flight routes, significantly enhancing the Maldives’ accessibility. Airlines such as Azerbaijan Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, and Air India have launched new routes, offering greater convenience and attracting more travellers to the destination.
China’s resurgence as a leading source market has been pivotal to this year’s success. Airlines, including Xiamen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines, have strengthened connectivity with major Chinese cities, driving a substantial increase in
arrivals. Emerging markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, alongside strong performance from Russia, have also contributed to the Maldives’ growing global appeal.
Adding to its triumphs, the Maldives has once again secured the title of the World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards for the fifth consecutive year. This historic achievement solidifies its status as a premier global tourism hub, surpassing 19 esteemed contenders, including Dubai, Greece, Indonesia, Spain, and Vietnam.
The Maldives also earned recognition as the World’s Leading Green Destination for the first time, underscoring the nation’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship alongside its tourism appeal.
The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced an ambitious target of $5 billion in tourism receipts for 2025, building on the remarkable momentum of 2024. Tourism receipts saw an impressive 15% growth in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). Meanwhile, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) reported an 8% increase in tourism-related government tax revenues during the same period. These remarkable accomplishments result from strategic initiatives led by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with stakeholders. Efforts to diversify source markets, strengthen airline partnerships, and enhance promotional campaigns have boosted accessibility and elevated the Maldives’ appeal on the global stage.
With the Maldives welcoming its two millionth tourist on 26th December 2024, the year has ended on a historic high note. Looking ahead, the nation has set an ambitious goal of achieving 2.4 million arrivals in 2025, surpassing the 2.2 million forecasted in the national budget. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal expressed optimism for the industry’s future, citing growth in key markets and the success of targeted promotional efforts as driving forces behind this projection.
The upward trajectory of arrivals underscores the Maldives’ ability to adapt to an evolving travel landscape. With its turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and world-class hospitality, the Maldives continues to set benchmarks as a premier global destination.

PEOPLE
Jason Kruse General Manager of JA Manafaru
In this exclusive interview, we have the pleasure of speaking with Jason Kruse, the General Manager of JA Manafaru, whose remarkable career spans over two decades in luxury hospitality. Jason has a strong background in managing island resorts and boutique hotels, and he is known for enhancing guest experiences and driving revenue growth.
In his current role at JA Manafaru, Jason has successfully spearheaded a comprehensive restructuring, elevating the resort’s TripAdvisor ranking from 77 to 10 within a year. He shares his passion for the resort, highlighting what truly sets JA Manafaru apart—from its deep-rooted connection to Maldivian culture to its emphasis on sustainability and fostering a happy team.
Could you share your career journey and how you became the General Manager at JA Manafaru?
My career is quite interesting, and took a somewhat nontraditional route. I left home at 15 with a background in trade, working on projects, construction, and various other areas. After that, I moved into food and beverage, starting out with fine dining and bar work. I was then fortunate enough to complete a Training Management Program, where I worked in every role in the hotel for 18 months. This gave me a unique understanding of what each team member experiences. That’s where I started, and I’ve built my career from there.
What do you consider the most rewarding project or accomplishment in your career so far?
I’ve now been in the Maldives for 14 years, overseeing three separate resorts. To be honest, I’m very passionate about JA Manafaru. I love redeveloping properties and helping resorts reach their full potential. When I came to view this property two or three months before accepting the job, I immediately fell in love with the people and the island itself. It’s so natural, and as you know, being in the Maldives, you walk around and feel its soul—you get excited. The beaches, the
restaurants—all are luxuries. I’m really excited about this project.
What are the unique selling points at JA Manafaru that set the resort apart from other luxury island destinations in the Maldives?
We’re a secluded, peaceful sanctuary, but what I find most important is how engaged our team is with our guests. Guests are the centre of our world, and the entire team is deeply passionate about ensuring each guest has the best holiday. They’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. That culture is rare on islands, and I believe it comes from the fact that many of our team members have been with us since the resort’s opening. They’re not hopping from island to island; they’re truly invested in making this resort successful. Our people make it unique.
With the rise of experiential travel, how do you foresee guest expectations evolving, and how is JA Manafaru adapting to meet these demands?
When adapting to the evolving travel experience, being located in the North adds a lot of heritage and history. As a resort, we embrace this within the guest
experience. For instance, we’re one of the few resorts with a Maldivian Executive Chef. He’s fantastic—not just as a chef but also as a leader. We make sure to incorporate local recipes and foods into our menus more meaningfully than I’ve seen before. We also integrate Maldivian music, art, and history into the overall experience, and we even have a Maldivian museum.
Can you share some key strategies or practices you use to foster a positive and high-performing team environment?
Culture beats strategy, hands down, every time. Culture comes from the heart of the house; it comes from being with the team, fostering belief in the resort, belief in the team, and belief in themselves. We have a very clear goal and commercial pillars that we are aligned behind. But the highest priority is being passionate about going above and beyond for every guest. Our focus is on our team, and the team’s focus is on our guests. It’s something we’ve developed over the last 12 months. We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the heart of the house. Along with upgrading the resort’s front-of-house, we’ve invested in the heart of the house too. After all, you can’t make the front-of-house happy unless the heart-of-house is healthy and wellsupported. We’ve refreshed the staff rooms, upgraded staff public areas, built a cafe, and added amenities like a barbershop, coffee shop, and fitness facilities for the staff. There’s even a staff bar for those who want it. We want to make sure our team stays very happy on the property.
What role does sustainability play in the future of luxury hospitality, especially in island resorts like JA Manafaru?
Sustainability on the property is important, not only for our guests but also for attracting and retaining the best team members. The right team wants to know we are committed to doing the right things and they are highly engaged in our efforts. From recycling, upcycling, and reducing plastic to growing food locally—we have our own chickens and our mushroom hut. The team is passionate about these initiatives, and the more we can create from scratch, the better. We’re constantly exploring new ways to be more sustainable, and this mindset extends beyond the resort as the team takes these practices back to their local islands.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the luxury island resort sector, and how have you overcome them?
As more resorts emerge in the Maldives, most offer similar attractions—beaches, over-water villas, and coconut trees. For us, it’s about standing out meaningfully to our guests. We are focusing on delivering highly personalised service in a relaxed atmosphere.
Wellness is also a key focus, as many guests want to continue their wellness journeys while on holiday. Though we’re not strictly a wellness resort, we offer options for fitness, detox, or even starting new programmes. Of course, some guests just want to relax, sip a sunset cocktail, and enjoy a pizza—it’s all about what they prefer.
Looking ahead, what are your goals and vision for JA Manafaru in the next 3–5 years?
We have a huge opportunity to invest more in our guests than traditional sales and marketing strategies. Online reputation is becoming increasingly important, and there’s no better marketing than a happy guest. The impact of a satisfied guest cannot be underestimated. We’re not restricted by rigid procedures or policies, which allows us to be flexible in meeting our individual guests’ needs. I think this gives us a real competitive advantage. Sustainability and wellness are also becoming major focus areas for JA Manafaru.
Finally, what advice would you give aspiring hospitality professionals who look up to your success and want to follow a similar career path?
When it comes to leadership, I think everyone finds their own path. It starts with being true to yourself, identifying your values, and writing them down. Revisit and update them regularly. Surround yourself with positive, passionate, and strong people who aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re wrong and help you grow. Keep pushing forward; this industry changes rapidly, and you and your team must keep striving for improvement to stay ahead. There is more to it, but the drive to make this better and be a good person goes a long way.

Khumar Askerova
Regional Director of Sales and Marketing, Indian Ocean of JA Hotels & Resorts
With an impressive 25-year career in the hospitality industry, Khumar Askerova brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role as the Regional Director of Sales & Marketing for the Indian Ocean. Overseeing sales for the flagship property, JA Manafaru, in the Maldives, as well as other Indian Ocean locations, Khumar is well-equipped to navigate the competitive landscape.
In this interview, we delve into Khumar’s journey and her vision for the future of luxury travel in the region. She shares her belief in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with audiences, fostering personal connections, and integrating the unique cultural elements of the Maldives into her marketing campaigns—all aimed at enhancing the guest experience at JA Manafaru and beyond.
Can you share your career journey and what led you to your current Director of Sales and Marketing role for JA Manafaru Maldives and other Indian Ocean properties?
I view my career journey as a story that reflects where I have been, what I have accomplished, and how I have grown at each stage while transitioning across industries, from hospitality to real estate development, becoming an art dealer, and relocating from my home country to Brazil, Dubai, and the Maldives. I re-entered the hospitality sector, working with reputable brands like Hyatt, Marriott, and COMO, and rebranded myself for a new job search, seizing opportunities in the Indian Ocean region.
I was born and raised in Azerbaijan, where I grew up with an artist father and a doctor mother. Their influence played a key role in shaping my artistic vision and identity and developed character traits that helped me navigate life’s challenges, engage in continuous learning, and contribute to well-being, all while maintaining persistence.
My career path began with a degree in Business Administration, where I built a strong foundation in management and organisational skills. I started as a sales assistant at Hyatt, gradually moving up to a Public
Relations and Brand Manager role. Later, I transitioned into Sales at Marriott International, taking on roles of increasing responsibility and launching multiple hotels in the city and ski resorts across Azerbaijan.
A notable risk I took in my career was transitioning from a secure position with recognised brands in my home country to a standalone resort in the Maldives. Though initially daunting, this move provided me with greater opportunities for growth and development into the position of Cluster Director of Sales & Marketing at COMO Hotels & Resorts and my current role with JA Hotels & Resorts as Regional Director of Sales & Marketing for Indian Ocean. The risk paid off as I gained valuable experience, advanced my career and expanded my professional network.
How do you tailor your sales and marketing strategies to cater to the unique characteristics of JA Manafaru and its clientele?
With global political instability and economic uncertainty, selling has become more challenging, with tighter budgets to manage and sales pitches that once might have taken the form of a long golf game or dinner discussion now needing to be more targeted and efficient to close.
With its constant evolution, the dynamic nature of the travel industry requires a more personal approach to each client, using different strategies based on specific market conditions, demand, and seasonality. This allows me to blend the elements of crafting compelling narratives that resonate with audiences and drive business growth.
How do you approach market segmentation, and what guest profiles are you focusing on attracting to JA Manafaru?
At its core, market and audience segmentation is crucial in the process of breaking down a broader market into smaller segments, making it easier to tailor and focus on attracting an audience that shares common interests. We aim to attract higherincome earners looking for luxury at an affordable price in the Real Maldives, whether spending their holiday with families or seeking a romantic escape on a private island surrounded by lush vegetation. JA Manafaru offers great value for money and exquisite culinary experiences through the Dine Around meal plan, with five restaurants and two bars. Most of our guests stay for an average of 7 nights and frequently book their next stay while still on the island.
What are the key trends in luxury travel that you believe will shape the future of JA Manafaru’s marketing efforts?
In addition to privacy, cultural immersion experiences, and personalised services at scale, the recently launched Wellness Retreats, set in an unspoiled nature setting, offer a culinary journey through highly-rated restaurants, including The Cellar, which features fine dining. These experiences reflect a deeper appreciation for creating lasting memories. These key trends at JA Manafaru enrich the soul while meeting the highest standards of comfort and elegance.
Among the trends in luxury travel, I would also highlight sustainable tourism as environmental concerns grow each year. We are proud to be recognised as one of the most sustainable resorts in the Maldives, with several initiatives in place. These include converting ocean-bound plastic into reusable items like beach or laundry bags and growing a home garden to produce homemade jams, sauces, pickles, and creamy natural yoghurt with delicious coconut. Additionally, our spa team is creating a new Alchemy Bar, where guests can make bathtub teas, lip balms, soaps, and more, using native plants foraged from around JA Manafaru.
How do you integrate the unique cultural elements of the Maldives into your marketing campaigns to appeal to both regional and international guests?
For me, it is almost impossible to avoid local culture when travelling. Regardless of your motivations, it is inevitable that, as a guest, you will experience some aspect of the local culture, whether it’s through something as simple as eating the local cuisine or learning a few words of the language.
At JA Manafaru, we prioritise activities and experiences designed to immerse both regional and international guests in a way of life different from their own. This includes a captivating tour of the resort’s cultural exhibit, Magey Hiyaa, and once a week, we host an unforgettable Maldivian night. Guests enjoy a traditional “Malaafaiy” feast at Kakuni restaurant, followed by a mesmerising Boduberu performance. JA Manafaru also features historical artefacts and royal antiquities in the Utheemu gallery, offering guests the chance to discover the significance of the unique northernmost atoll, which has been pivotal in trade routes connecting Africa, Arabia, and the Far East.
Digital transformation is crucial for modern marketing. What digital tools or platforms have been most effective in your marketing strategy, and how do you plan to leverage them further?
We always remain connected to the guests to ensure they receive updates and information about island activities. In addition to the 24/7 Thakkaru (butler) service, we encourage guests to download our mobile app before their arrival to enhance their experience, streamline operations, and remain competitive. The app allows seamless services such as table reservations, excursion planning, spa treatment bookings, mobile check-ins, and more. Push notifications, designed like newsletters, share promotions and offers, encouraging guests to book their next stay with us.
What excites you most about the future of luxury travel in the Indian Ocean region, and how do you see JA Manafaru positioning itself within this landscape?
In the next 5-10 years, I see luxury travel becoming more focused on experiences, with terms like “ultra-premium,” “authentic,” “private,” and “untouched” becoming more prevalent. Travellers will continue to seek tailor-made vacations enhanced with wellness retreat programmes in places offering increased privacy, exquisite culinary expertise, and premium, high-end amenities. I’m excited and confident that JA Manafaru will remain agile, adapting to new luxury trends and staying competitive with its offerings.
