Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives
Raffaele Solferino
General Manager at Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives
We had the pleasure of chatting with Raffaele Solferino, an industry veteran whose journey began on the stunning Amalfi Coast in Italy. With a career spanning multiple countries and continents, he brings a wealth of experience to his Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives role.
In this interview, discover Raffaele’s inspirations, the resort’s unique offerings, exciting upcoming developments, dedication to exceptional guest experiences, and vision for maintaining Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives as a leader in the hospitality industry.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey shaped your approach to hotel management, particularly in unique destinations like the Maldives?
My inspiration for the hospitality industry comes from my childhood. I was born on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, where high-end tourist destinations like Capri, Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento have set a high standard for the industry. From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a hotelier. Seeing these beautiful hotels and the international tourists they attracted sparked my passion.
I studied at a hospitality school in the area, and after completing my education, I began my career overseas. I started in Switzerland, moved to Germany, the UK, France, and Monaco, and have worked in 12 countries, travelling around Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. I have always been drawn to hospitality for its beauty, the joy of caring for guests, the appreciation of the lifestyle, and the opportunity to work in multicultural teams. This diverse experience has shaped my approach to
hotel management, especially in unique destinations like the Maldives, by instilling a deep appreciation for international travel and cultural diversity.
What are the key factors/offerings that have contributed to Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives’ success under your leadership?
Several factors have contributed to our success. From a business perspective, the successful opening of our establishment in 2017, our strategic positioning, timely and successful launch, the development of dynamic and thriving teams, and consistent growth have been crucial. Implementing a new brand blueprint in the Maldives and instilling our unique work culture among team members have also been significant.
Our environmental efforts have gained us significant international recognition, including four consecutive Green Globe certifications in acknowledgement of our environmental management and one of the best house reefs. We are widely appreciated in all markets thanks to our commercial activities, excellence, and successful profitability. Additionally, I am delighted to report that a few talented local individuals who once worked with us have now attained Assistant General Manager and acting General Manager positions in the industry.
What aspect of working at Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives, excites you the most?
Our resort represents my second family. The people are the soul and the success of everything here, creating a unique energy for both team members and guests. Guest satisfaction is paramount, with our growing number of repeat visitors who highly appreciate our genuine service and loving hospitality. Our positive and flexible approach to guest needs allows us to create memorable experiences.
How do you ensure that Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives, provides exceptional guest experiences, and what strategies do you employ to maintain high guest satisfaction levels?
We put guests at the centre of everything we do. Our core value is that guests come first, which cascades into our four pillars: guest engagement and excellence, people care and development, digital platforms for building relationships, and financial intuitions.
We focus on engaging with the customer, personalising service, and paying great attention to details. Our digital management ensures that guests feel cared for even before they arrive and after they depart. This approach, combined with daily interactions and a flexible advisory role during their stay, drives both guest satisfaction and revenue generation.
Can you share any exciting upcoming developments or plans for the property that guests can look forward to?
We take pride in maintaining our property to the highest standards. Every year, we invest in updates to our villas, outlets, and facilities, such as the Marine Sports Centre and SPA, to ensure they are always up to date with the latest trends.
Phase one of our solar energy plant is complete, and we are planning phase two to increase solar energy production to 40%. We are introducing bikes, new facilities, and games at the kids’ club and for our team members. We also have a major refurbishment programme in the works, although it is still in the engineering phase and not ready to be disclosed yet.
What do you envision for the future of Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives, and how do you plan to continue positioning the resort as a leader in the hospitality sector?
We are committed to delivering our promises to our guests, team members, business partners, and stakeholders. Our robust blueprint is designed to foster profit and happiness. Central to our strategy is focusing on the well-being of our team members as their satisfaction is key to delivering excellent performance and outstanding customer service.
Our vision for the future is to lead with integrity, reliability, resilience, and flexibility. We believe flexibility is essential as we want guests to feel at home and not restricted by rigid policies. We listen to our guests and tailor our services to their needs, contributing to our success. By staying attuned to the latest trends in travel and tourism, particularly those driven by digital innovation, we ensure our top priority remains guest happiness and loyalty.
What advice would you give hoteliers or anyone wanting to enter the hospitality industry?
My advice to young people entering this industry is to give time the time it needs. Don’t rush your career by jumping from one job to another. It’s important to build a solid foundation and develop your career with patience. You need to learn the business from the ground up, including the back-of-house operations.
We develop training programmes that take a few years to prepare someone for leadership roles. It’s essential to allow the management company to guide and develop your career properly. While moving from job to job might seem like it offers better opportunities, it can prevent you from gaining the necessary experience and building a strong career path.
In the Maldives, where there are many resorts, it’s easy to be tempted by better offers. However, it’s important to apprehend the workings of each department and understand both the commercial and operational sides of the business. This comprehensive approach will help you grow and become valuable to your team and brand.
Shameem Mohamed General
Manager at Nika Island Resort & Spa
We had the opportunity to interview Shameem Mohamed, the General Manager at Nika Island Resort & Spa, where he elaborated on his career journey and the features that distinguish the resort from others.
Having begun his career as a humble telephone operator and having gained experience in various departments within the resort industry, Shameem now prioritises the preservation of Nika Island Resort & Spa’s history and natural beauty.
Could you share a brief overview of your career journey leading up to your current role as General Manager at Nika Island Resort?
I started my career from a very humble beginning as a telephone operator, then worked as a Guest Relations Representative before moving on to the rooms division. Later, I completely shifted my focus to the marine recreation area, working as a Dive Master and a water sports instructor. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of Maldivian hospitality and knowledge of marine ecosystem sustainability. I then transitioned to the resort management side as the Duty Manager. Since then, I have worked in various departments across resort operations in the Maldives.
What sets Nika Island Resort apart from other resorts in the Maldives? What do you think gives the resort its competitive edge?
Nika is one of the flagship resorts in the Maldives, located in Ari Atoll, where we believe that the new definition of luxury is space and privacy. We are very proud to boast one of the best house reefs in the
Maldives, allowing our guests to simply grab their snorkelling masks and fins to explore vibrant marine life just steps away from their rooms, with live corals and fish around them. We consider ourselves fortunate to have these natural wonders around us, making sustainability a core value at Nika.
Our commitment to the environment is evident with zero-waste plastics across all departments, an organic farm, and the only underground museum in the Maldives which showcases the country’s culture and heritage.
How do you preserve Nika Island Resort’s timeless charm while catering to the modern traveller?
At Nika, we aim to preserve the Maldives as it used to be by maintaining the environment and ecosystem. We focus on continuous improvement in every aspect of hospitality, with innovation in our DNA, while preserving a sense of traditional hospitality.
Can you describe some unique features or experiences guests can enjoy while staying at Nika Island Resort?
Nika is the only resort in the Maldives offering private beaches, a feature we are very proud of. Every beach villa at Nika boasts its own private beach. Nika has preserved its coral reef villas with distinctive Italian interior design. It is also the only resort where guests can fully experience the history of the Maldives, highlighted by our exclusive underground museum.
Situated in a longevity blue zone, Nika promotes physical and water-based activities and maintains an organic farm. Preserving Maldivian culture and heritage is our utmost priority. We believe that true Maldivian hospitality is deeply rooted in our culture, history, and nature.
What are some exciting developments or future plans for Nika Island Resort that guests can look forward to?
Innovation is in our DNA, and we take every opportunity to impress our guests and ensure they have the best possible stay with us. We are currently developing some exciting guest journeys focused on longevity and sustainability. At Nika, we believe that the true essence of hospitality lies in offering space and privacy. We are committed to upholding this philosophy as we move forward and continue to thrive.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, particularly in a leadership role?
It is essential to stay up-to-date, focus on innovation, and always prioritise honesty as the best policy in the workplace. Building trust with your superiors and guests is crucial, as trust is paramount. You may have the highest qualifications, but without reliability and trustworthiness, those qualifications hold little value. Honesty should be the highest quality in the hospitality industry. By applying these qualities, you will reach the pinnacle of your success. This quality cannot be matched by any qualification. So, treat every opportunity as if it were your last. Maldivian hospitality is continuously evolving and competitive.
Gaurav Thakur General Manager at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa
In this exclusive interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with Gaurav Thakur, the General Manager at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa. Gaurav is an accomplished hospitality veteran with a 19-year career spanning the Waldorf Astoria, Hilton, and Conrad brands. His diverse experience includes roles in the United Kingdom, India, and the Maldives, where he oversaw operations across various departments.
During the interview, Gaurav shared his personal values and leadership principles, which he passionately applies to nurturing and developing talent at Hilton Maldives.
Could you tell us about your career journey?
I started my career in hospitality, inspired by the happiness I observed in the industry. During my childhood, I would visit hotels or restaurants with my parents or friends, and I always noticed the joy in these environments. I was attracted to this industry because it’s all about celebration and joy.
I began my career with Hilton in London and continued my journey with Hilton for a long time. Then, I moved to India to open the first Conrad in Pune, followed by supporting another Conrad in Bangalore. This was followed by opening the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi in 2019 and coming to Hilton Maldives to open this flagship brand of Hilton. So far, this has been my journey with Hilton, and I’ve been working with Hilton for almost 19 years now.
What personal values or leadership principles do you bring to your role as General Manager?
When we talk about values, it’s all about people. The leadership style must be highly adaptable and situational. These values are very important for
operating a resort or during a pre-opening. They are the driving force for any resort or hotel you want to open or operate. These values support and encourage all team members to work with us. People are the key contributors to the success of the resort or hotel.
What steps do you take to stay informed about industry trends and best practices, and how do you implement these insights into the resort’s operations?
We have a wealth of data available, whether it’s Maldives-based data or data from Asia or worldwide. This tourism data is essential for understanding trends such as arrival types and business trends in the Maldives. Industry data can also be sourced from peers or online sources. We have a good network within Hilton to obtain and analyse this data, enabling us to make informed decisions for future business. Additionally, we rely on data from the Maldives to understand which regions are contributing visitors and to identify potential partnerships with various global partners.
Operationally, we also have various data on our performance. Based on these, from a guest experience point of view, we are ensuring that our customer service levels are optimal. This dedication has helped us win a few awards in a short time and achieve what we have so far.
What strategies do you have in place to ensure seamless operations and maintain the highest service standards throughout the resort?
Team members are the core, the heart of any operation. To be successful, team members must be happy, have access to the best facilities provided by the company, and receive the best training to maximise their output.
We have achieved considerable success in a short period, both operationally and commercially. Our operational success is purely due to our team members. We receive many online reviews thanking team members by name, indicating that they are significantly impacting the guest experience. Our goal is to create happiness for our guests, which is made possible by our dedicated team.
What sets Hilton Maldives apart in the market?
Hilton Maldives is the company’s flagship brand, and our proximity to the airport, just 20 minutes away by premium speedboat, is very convenient. All our villas have pools, which is a significant advantage. We have a beautiful rooftop lounge and one of the largest kids’ clubs, which is very important for family travellers. We have not only catered to children but also included amenities for teenagers.
From an F&B perspective, we offer exceptional experiences and have the first cocktail lab in the Maldives, which is unique and includes mixology classes. We also have the Amingiri Spa with a Hammam, which is rare in the Maldives.
How do you intend to ensure Hilton Maldives’ ongoing success, and what are your plans for the future?
Innovation is crucial for success, and learning from our experiences and continuously innovating the guest experience is essential. Equally important is listening to our guests and team members, as it gives us direction on where we want to go and what we want to achieve. Since opening, we have made several changes based on feedback, particularly in food and beverage. We introduced an Italian concept and continue to innovate based on guest feedback.
Our team has also been wonderful, and we have worked to enhance their careers, providing opportunities for growth and development.
What advice would you give aspiring hoteliers who want to pursue a career in hospitality?
Understanding the fundamentals of operations and maintaining a passion for their work is key. Work-life balance is also important. We have partnered with Maldives National University to nurture local talent, offering young students internship programmes to help them achieve their dreams. Recently, we teamed up with the Ministry to create opportunities in the hospitality sector for differently-abled individuals. As part of the Hilton group, spreading the light and warmth of hospitality is important.

Sun, Spa, and Cool Vibes, Discover The Standard, Huravalhi Maldives
The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives located in Raa Atoll and just a 35-minute seaplane ride away, is adding a deeper dimension to the traditional Maldivian holiday. With its playful design and strong wellness focus, it offers an exhilarating and unforgettable experience.
Eschewing the buttoned-up formality of some luxury Maldivian resorts, The Standard, Maldives embraces the island’s natural beauty with a playful twist. Villas, with their private plunge pools, boast a chic design that manages to feel both unpretentious and Instagram-ready. Guests can opt for sunrise-facing beachfront havens or the thrill of an overwater retreat stilted above the gentle lapping of waves.
While the setting is unquestionably spectacular, the resort’s focus on wellness sets it apart. At the heart of its offerings lies The Standard Spa, a sanctuary for those in search of rejuvenation and a little self-indulgence. Here, the traditional hammam gets a playful update, encouraging couples and groups of friends to unwind with a selection of therapeutic muds and scrubs.
But it’s not all about ancient bathing rituals. The Standard has a knack for tapping into the most current wellness trends. Sound healing sessions, guided meditations under the vast Maldivian sky, and talks by visiting wellness “stars” keep things fresh. Yoga lovers are well-catered for, too, with vinyasa classes and the occasional aerial yoga session hosted in airy spaces with breathtaking ocean vistas.
It would be remiss to overlook the culinary aspect of a wellness retreat. The Standard does not disappoint, offering various dining experiences. There’s authentic Maldivian fare at Guduguda alongside the breezy all-day-dining Kula spot. Foodies with a penchant for the freshest seafood would not want to miss the BBQ Shak, where the chefs work their magic over a sizzling open-fire grill.
For all its wellness credentials, perhaps what truly makes The Standard appealing is its ability to seamlessly merge those elements with an atmosphere that’s both laid-back and undeniably stylish. This is not the sort of place where you feel pressured to ditch dessert or wake up at sunrise for a compulsory “wellness boot camp”. It’s the Maldives, after all. Your personal concept of wellness, whether it’s a long swim, an indulgent spa treatment, or a sunset cocktail, is entirely in your hands.

Veligandu Maldives Resort Island to Open November 2024
Crown and Champa Resorts (CCR) is set to expand its presence in the luxury space by reopening Veligandu Maldives Resort Island in the North Ari Atoll in November. Just 20 minutes by seaplane or 60 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, the resort welcomes guests of all ages. Established in 1984 as one of the pioneering resorts in the Maldives, Veligandu has undergone an extensive renovation and will welcome guests in its 100 villas from November 2024.
Veligandu will belong to CCR’s acclaimed luxury collection alongside Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, Hurawalhi Maldives Island Resort, Kagi Maldives Resort & Spa, and Jawakara Islands Maldives. There are no man-made islands in the CCR portfolio, and Veligandu is no exception, seamlessly blending natural beauty with secluded luxury and featuring already-established lush vegetation and flora, unlike new islands that have been manufactured.
Just a 10-minute boat ride from the resort, Big Blue Point is the most likely place for hammerhead shark sightings in the Maldives. The North Ari Atoll features 18 dive sites catering to divers of all levels, and Veligandu’s Ocean Dive Centre offers custom-made courses tailored to all guests. Snorkelling and diving excursions will also allow guests to encounter the diverse marine life of the North Ari Atoll, which includes sea turtles, manta rays, and eagle rays. The in-house marine biologist is on hand to enhance the guest experience by sharing a deeper understanding of the underwater world while contributing to the conservation of the coral reefs and marine ecosystems.
Veligandu is only the second resort in the Maldives to feature a pickleball court, padel tennis, and bicycles. The resort’s ocean water sports and excursions centre allows guests to jet ski, parasail,
kayak, and paddleboard, among many other activities. For guests looking for a more relaxing experience, Veligandu also features an overwater Himeyn Spa with an extensive treatment programme and a yoga pavilion.
Veligandu Maldives Resort Island comprises 100 villas – these include 47 Ocean Pool Villas with a section of glass floor to the crystalline waters below; 28 Ocean Villas, 10 of which have a private jacuzzi; 16 Jacuzzi Beach Villas; and 9 Beach Villas. Each villa brings the outside in with interiors synonymous with the tropical surroundings. Each villa is complete with a king-size bed, a private porch, and a 55- or 65-inch flat-screen TV to create a space accommodating all guests for both privacy and togetherness.
Veligandu features a variety of cuisines suited to all tastes. Madivaru Teppanyaki Grill invites guests to indulge in Japaneseinspired teppanyaki cuisine with live, theatrical knifework and cooking, while Raalhu specialises in fine seafood – such as local lobster – paired with unparalleled ocean vistas. Guests can also enjoy buffet-style dining at the Dhonveli restaurant with a fusion of authentic Asian and international cuisines, or, for those guests opting for a lighter meal, Thundi’s snack menu offers tapas-style bites and salads. For a unique and immersive culinary experience, guests can also choose destination dining with various spots at their disposal.
For the freedom to dine at any restaurant on the resort at leisure, the dine-around all-inclusive package takes away the constraints of reservation times. For full and half-board guests, the resort’s new beverage plan gives guests complete access to add-ons for all-inclusive drinks when needed.

In partnership with the Maldives’ leading solar energy provider, Swimsol, a total of 1937kWp of additional solar panels will become operational in October this year. 1MWp of panels will be located on a land bank on the East of the island, with a further 937kWp to be installed on the rooftops of all the resort’s beach villas and F&B outlets, as well as the FLOW Spa, dive centre, Portico, kids club and back-of-house buildings. 2MWh of extra battery capacity will also be added, enabling the property to rely solely on solar energy during daylight hours.
Forward-looking Fari Islands
From its inception, the development of the Fari Islands has been guided by sustainable architecture and design. It is the largest hospitality project globally to benefit from the extensive use of offsite manufacturing technology known as ‘Mass Engineered Timber’ or ’MET’, which reduced carbon emissions by over 6,000 tons after production and transportation; in addition, all the villas were prefabricated, to ensure minimal run off into the marine ecosystem Departing from the conventional thatched roof structures prevalent in the Maldives, villas and amenities were designed with flat roofs, allowing solar panels to be easily mounted. This allows the Fari Islands to host one of the largest solar installations in the Maldives (>4MW). Pontiac Land further explores site-specific renewable energy solutions to help achieve its net-zero goals.
The flagship of the four-island Fari Islands archipelago, Patina Maldives, the inaugural resort by new lifestyle brand Patina Hotels & Resorts by the Capella Hotel Group, opened in May 2021, with a guiding principle of sustainability at its core. A hands-on, data-led approach to positively impacting people and place reflects a brandwide commitment to the pursuit of ‘perpetuality’.
Strong emphasis is placed on children’s activities to engage and raise awareness amongst the next generation of ocean champions. Embodying this future-thinking approach, Patina Maldives’ pioneering children’s centre, Footprints, is a place of discovery and inspiration, engaging activities, and exceptional facilities—all powered entirely by Swimsol solar panels.
To further reduce import footprints, Patina Maldives houses an organic permaculture garden, the Garden of Perpetuality, that cultivates fresh pesticide-free produce, including watermelon, sweet melon, okra, eggplant, cucumber, capsicum, pumpkin and kang kong; all food waste is turned into organic fertiliser through bio-digesters. Plant-based Roots, one of the resort’s signature restaurants, operates on the root-to-leaf principle to encourage guests to adopt a more conscious and conscientious lifestyle. Drinking water for the whole archipelago is filtered on-site by Nordaq and bottled on the island without using single-use plastic. In the rooms and at Flow spa, guests are treated to a range of sustainable amenities in refilled containers by British brand Haeckels and US-based OSEA.

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives Launches
Partnership with ‘Giving Bag’ to Support
Sustainability Efforts and the Local Community
Alila Kothaifaru Maldives announced the launch of its latest initiative in partnership with Giving Bag. Giving Bag provides an innovative amenity program that aims to intertwine sustainability efforts with community support by providing guests with an opportunity to contribute to local orphanages while reducing waste.
The concept behind Giving Bag is simple yet impactful. Each guestroom at Alila Kothaifaru will be equipped with a designated bag where guests can deposit clothes or snorkelling equipment they no longer need or want. These items will then be collected by the resort’s green team, washed, and delivered to the Kuda Kudhinge Hiya orphanage. By repurposing slightly used clothing, the initiative not only supports those in need but also promotes sustainable practices by extending the lifespan of clothing and reducing textile waste.
The resort’s green team met with the Ministry of Social and Family Development to discuss collaborative initiatives. During the meeting, Deputy Minister HE Aminath Namza highlighted efforts to foster compassion and love in society, including a new adoption program and internships for orphans.
The Kuda Kudhinge Hiya orphanage is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing shelter, education, and support to orphaned and underprivileged children in the Maldives. Through partnerships with local businesses like Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, the orphanage aims to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive and fulfil their potential.
Alila Kothaifaru Maldives’s partnership with the Giving Bag initiative exemplifies the resort’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and responsible tourism practices. By inviting guests to participate in this meaningful endeavour, the resort hopes to inspire others to take action and make a positive difference in the world.
