We also make local purchases whenever possible and use native and adapted plants in our landscaping to protect biodiversity.
Our sustainability practices extend to the local community, providing gainful employment and supporting local initiatives. We have our own vegetable and herbal garden and organise regular coral planting, tree planting, and coastal clean-up activities.
Additionally, we operate a homemade sparkling and still water bottle plant and continuously educate guests, local communities, and associates about flora, fauna, and sustainability practices.
Are there any upcoming plans or new concepts you are excited to introduce in the culinary space at Heritance Aarah?
Our talented chefs have brought great honour to both Heritnace Aarah and the Maldives at recent worldrenowned culinary competitions like the Culinary Olympics and Culinary World Cup.
Our curated fusion menu at “Ambula”, the world’s only Sri Lankan and Maldivian contemporary fusion restaurant, has been a popular favourite among guests. It truly celebrates the flavours and dishes from the friendly neighbouring islands. The eight-course tasting menu features unique dishes and is presented with its own narrative, adding a storytelling element to dining.
We are currently revamping the menu at Ambula to enhance the experience and we are excited to launch this soon.
What excites you the most about the Heritance and Adaaran family?
The heart of our success lies with our incredible team. Their dedication creates a haven for all our guests. At Aitken Spence Maldives Resorts, we prioritise fostering a culture of continuous development. This commitment extends beyond our team members, encompassing the local community as well. Recently, we offered five scholarships (valued at over USD 10,000) to Maldivian female candidates for our renowned ’True Art of Service’ 10-day in-house butler training program.
Adaaran and Heritance weave a tapestry of experiences unlike any other. We meticulously integrate the rich traditions, culture, and heritage of the Maldives (the destination we operate in), blended with the worldrenowned Sri Lankan hospitality, creating an emotion
that transcends words. It’s a feeling you’ll encounter not just from our dedicated team members but from every encounter within our havens.
What is your vision for the resort’s development in the coming years?
Our vision for the resort’s future is centred around three key areas: enhancing our associates’ development, evolving our culinary offerings, and strengthening our sustainability efforts.
We will focus on the continuous development of our associates, introducing innovative training programs and pursuing LQA (Leading Quality Assurance) certification for all team members. This pledge extends to the local community, ensuring everyone benefits from our growth.
In the culinary aspect, we aim to integrate the latest global food trends and technologies with the rich flavours of Maldivian cuisine. This will create a dining experience that is both unique and memorable for our guests.
We are also dedicated to environmental stewardship. Pending ministerial approval, we will resume our coral planting initiative to support preserving the Maldivian ecosystem. Additionally, we plan to increase our reliance on solar energy, further reducing our environmental footprint.
Overall, our goal is to offer a blend of modern luxury and Maldivian heritage, crafting exceptional experiences that exceed expectations and create lasting memories.

His extensive expertise was recently recognised with the ‘Sales Personality of the Year’ accolade by Hotelier Maldives, highlighting his exceptional contributions to the field.
Our team had the opportunity to sit down with him to explore what sets Heritance Aarah apart in the competitive market and how Adaaran Resorts distinguishes itself from other Maldivian resorts.
With a deep understanding of current trends and tourist behaviours, Suresh also shared his expert insights into the industry’s evolving dynamics, discussed the current challenges, and outlined his vision for the future of tourism in the Maldives.
With over 15 years of experience in the Maldives hospitality industry, how has your journey to Assistant Vice President of Sales & Marketing shaped your approach to managing Adaaran Resorts and Heritance Aarah?
My journey in the Maldives’ hospitality industry has been like a long voyage across the azure waters surrounding our islands, rich in discoveries, challenges, and rewarding moments. Over the years, I’ve navigated the unique currents of this market, learning the importance of personalised service, the power of innovation, and the art of forging strong, meaningful relationships with travel trade partners.
One of the key milestones in this journey has been building a network that spans continents, allowing us to promote our resorts year-round, reaching every corner of the globe. It’s a collective effort, a symphony where every team member plays a crucial role in creating harmony. My approach as Assistant Vice President of Sales & Marketing is deeply rooted in understanding
guest expectations and continuously refining our offerings to meet and exceed them. Sustainability is our compass, guiding us towards long-term success for our resorts and the Maldives. This journey is not mine alone; it’s a shared adventure with a talented and passionate multicultural team by my side.
What makes Heritance Aarah stand out in the competitive Maldives market and make it a special destination for travellers?
Heritance Aarah is where luxury, culture, and sustainability meet to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience. This resort isn’t just a destination; it’s a journey into the heart of the Maldives, where modern comforts seamlessly blend with age-old traditions. What makes Heritance Aarah truly special is our commitment to authenticity, ensuring that every guest experiences the Maldives as it was meant to be pure, untouched, and full of life.
One of our greatest strengths is our culinary excellence. We’ve been hailed as the culinary destination of the Maldives, offering an unparalleled range of cuisines across multiple outlets within our all-inclusive package. Whether it’s a gourmet feast or a simple, authentic Maldivian dish, our guests are treated to a culinary journey that leaves a lasting impression.
Our focus on wellness and holistic experiences is another key differentiator. Heritance Aarah is home to the Maldives’ first Medi spa, and our wellness programs are designed to rejuvenate the body and soul. We offer an extensive range of sports, water activities, and even a traditional Maldivian village experience, ensuring that there’s something for everyone, whether you’re an adventure seeker or someone looking to unwind.
Sustainability is woven into every resort aspect, from energy-efficient practices to marine conservation programs. Our guests can indulge in luxury while knowing that their stay contributes to preserving the Maldives’ natural beauty. We’re proud to have achieved LEED Gold certification and to be recognised for our commitment to building a sustainable future.
Adaaran Resorts has a reputation for excellence. What sets your properties apart from other resorts in the Maldives?
Adaaran Resorts is more than just a collection of luxurious, boutique & and value-for-money properties; it’s the heart and soul of Maldivian hospitality, a homegrown brand that has stood the test of time. Our deep connection to the Maldives’ natural beauty and cultural richness truly sets us apart. Each of our resorts is like a unique chapter in a storybook, offering diverse experiences that cater to every kind of traveller, from the luxury seeker to the value-seeking adventurer.
All our resorts are nestled on natural islands, and we take immense pride in offering personalised service where every guest is treated with the warmth and care that defines Maldivian hospitality. Our culinary offerings are a testament to our commitment to excellence, with chefs who pour their hearts into every dish, creating a feast for the senses that blends local and international flavours.
Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us; it’s a way of life. We actively engage in initiatives that protect our marine environment and support local communities, ensuring our operations contribute positively to the Maldives’ ecosystem. We believe in nurturing local talent and investing time and resources to ensure that the future of Maldivian tourism is in capable, local hands. Our team is our greatest asset, and together, we create the magic of Adaaran Resorts.
How has the tourism landscape in the Maldives evolved over the past decade, and what do you foresee for its future?
The Maldives’ tourism landscape has transformed dramatically over the past decade, much like the shifting sands of our beautiful beaches. The market has diversified with travellers from new regions like South America, Southeast Asia, North America, and Eastern Europe. There’s been a significant shift towards experiential travel, where guests seek luxury and a deeper connection to the Maldives’ culture, environment, and people.
Technology has been a game changer, with digital marketing and online booking platforms allowing us to reach a global audience like never before. The influx of new, luxurious brands has elevated the Maldives’ visibility in the luxury space, but it’s also brought challenges that we must navigate carefully.
I envision continued growth in sustainable tourism, driven by the global demand for eco-friendly practices. The Maldives will likely see further diversification in its offerings, with a stronger focus on wellness, adventure tourism, and cultural experiences. However, the challenge will be balancing this growth with the need to protect our environment and preserve the unique charm of the Maldives. Leading brands must act responsibly when choosing islands for development, and I hope we see a move towards limiting man-made islands to protect our fragile ecosystem.
Can you share some insights into the current trends you’ve observed in tourist preferences and behaviours in the Maldives?
In recent years, we’ve observed a beautiful shift towards personalised and experiential travel. Guests are no longer just looking for a luxurious stay; they want unique experiences that allow them to connect with the local culture, environment, and people. From authentic Maldivian cooking classes and traditional fishing trips to stargazing and wellness retreats, travellers seek deeper, more meaningful experiences.
Sustainability is another major trend, with more travellers choosing resorts prioritising environmental stewardship. There’s a growing demand for eco-friendly accommodations, and soon, I believe guests will begin to differentiate between natural and man-made islands when choosing where to stay.
We’ve also seen a shift in our guests’ demographic profile, with more multigenerational families, solo travellers, and younger couples discovering the Maldives. These groups have specific preferences, such as family-friendly amenities, opportunities for social interaction, and activities that cater to diverse age groups. It’s an exciting time for us as we adapt and evolve to meet these changing needs.
What are the biggest challenges currently facing the tourism industry in the Maldives, and how are Adaaran Resorts and Heritance Aarah addressing these challenges?
The biggest challenge we face is climate change’s impact, which threatens our islands’ very existence. Rising sea levels and changing weather patterns pose significant risks, and we must tackle this challenge head-on. At Adaaran Resorts and Heritance Aarah, we are committed to sustainable practices, from using renewable energy sources and reducing waste to engaging in coral reef restoration projects. We’re not just protecting our islands; we’re safeguarding the future of the Maldives for generations to come.
Another challenge is the increasing unhealthy competition in the market. With more resorts opening, it’s crucial that we differentiate ourselves through
exceptional service, unique experiences, and innovative marketing strategies. We invest heavily in staff training and development to ensure our teams deliver the highest standards of hospitality. It’s a team effort, and every team member plays a vital role in creating the exceptional guest experiences that set us apart.
The Maldives’ remote location also presents logistical challenges, particularly regarding supply chain management and operational costs. We’re addressing these challenges by optimising our supply chain processes, investing in local partnerships, and exploring ways to reduce our carbon footprint. It’s all part of our commitment to sustainability and innovation.
What are your long-term goals for the Maldives tourism industry, and how do you plan to achieve them through your current role?
My long-term vision for the Maldives tourism industry is centred on sustainability, cultural preservation, and continued innovation. I see a future where the Maldives isn’t just a leading luxury destination and a global model for sustainable tourism.
In my current role, I’m committed to driving initiatives that promote eco-friendly practices, such as reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and energy, and supporting local conservation efforts. I believe in enhancing the guest experience by incorporating more cultural elements into our offerings, allowing travellers to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Maldivian heritage.
A significant part of my goal is also to build and nurture local marketing talent. I look forward to the day when I can hand over the reins to a Maldivian marketer who has been mentored and given the freedom to think creatively and act decisively. The potential here is immense, and with the right guidance and opportunities, Maldivians can lead the way in shaping the future of their tourism industry. My greatest joy will be seeing this vision come to life, led by a new generation of innovative, creative local talent.
Renato De Oliveira
General Manager of The Ritz Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands
Renato De Oliveira is the General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, an award-winning luxury property located in the heart of North Male’ Atoll.
With a remarkable 20-year tenure with the Ritz-Carlton, Renato’s career spans across seven different countries and properties. Renato now brings his wealth of experience to the Maldives, leading The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands.
Our team had a chat with Renato to delve deeper into what makes The RitzCarlton Maldives, Fari Islands, a standout destination in the luxury travel landscape.
Can you share your background and career journey that led you to become the General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands?
Although I was born in Brazil, I pursued my career in hospitality at Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Switzerland. Since then, I have been with Ritz-Carlton for 20 years. I have had the opportunity and the blessing of working in seven different countries across seven different properties, including Barcelona, Spain, and the Canary Islands, and then to China, where I was at the Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai. I then moved to the Ritz-Carlton in Santiago, returned to China, and continued my journey in Asia with roles at the RitzCarlton in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and now here in the Maldives.
With two decades of experience in luxury hospitality across seven Ritz-Carlton properties on three continents, how has this shaped your approach to managing The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands?
Cultural background is extremely important. I have had the blessing of working in many different countries with diverse cultures, guests, and people. This is one of the key elements that helps me do my job—understanding people, whether it’s my own colleagues who work in the hotel or understanding the guests, what they want, and how we can enhance what we do based on their culture and expectations to provide an elevated guest experience.
How does The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands set itself apart in providing a unique and luxurious experience for guests?
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, is a very unique product. The design and architecture are second to none. It is a very modern project for the Maldives, designed by Kerry Hill Architects. It is a product that is both residential and sophisticated. It is part of the Fari Islands, the first luxury integrated resort in the Maldives. We share our lagoon with another resort, Patina Maldives, and a third resort that will open in a couple of years. Our guests can leave the island and explore the Fari Marina, which has shops, art installations, an art gallery, food trailers, and ten other options for food and beverages. There is no other product in the Maldives that offers this dynamic combination.
What trends are influencing the hospitality industry, and how is The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands adapting to meet the changing expectations of luxury travellers?
Guest expectations are constantly evolving. Currently, trends are focusing on wellness, transformative experiences, and sustainability. These three are what everyone is looking for. Guests want to connect with the local culture and work on themselves, whether through wellness activities or connecting with the local community. We have a programme called “The Essence of Balance,” where we recently brought five big names in the wellness world, including yoga and sound healing practitioners, to the property to provide a journey of experiences for our guests. This was our first edition, and we will continue to bring such experiences throughout the year, focusing on wellness and wellbeing.
The resort was built with sustainability in mind and ensures that our guests are involved. We have a partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment, which provides educational activities for children. Guests who come with their families have their children learn about environmental sustainability and responsibility, ensuring they leave with a better awareness.
How important is sustainability in the hospitality industry, especially in a location like the Maldives? Are there eco-friendly practices that the resort has implemented or plans to implement?
Sustainability is in our DNA. We used prefabricated villas for most of the villas during construction. The wood used for the villas is from sustainable, traceable
sources in Germany. During the conceptualisation of food and beverages, our culinary partners and food sourcing also have a sustainability component. We ensure that we use 100% cage-free eggs and responsibly sourced fish. Our water system ensures that we produce our own water and provide it to guests for free, with no plastic around the resort, and we will continue to do so.
We also partner with the local community. With the help of our environmental marine biologist, we have had educational sessions at Dhiffushi and Thulusdhoo, where we talked about what is important to create awareness.
How does the resort approach the overall well-being of guests, including the mind, body, and spirit?
The resort offers a range of wellness activities. All guests start the day with a complimentary yoga salutation to the sunrise. Around the resort, we have multiple wellness options. Our spa, which uses Bamford products, offers natural and organic treatments. We also have an à la carte menu that caters for guests who want to relax and decompress. Guests can connect with nature through activities such as saving turtles and diving with our dive centre. Throughout the resort, guests have opportunities to connect with themselves and nature, and recharge, leaving with a better spirit than when they arrived.
How do you see the resort evolving under your leadership over the next five years?
My goal is to continuously evolve the guest experience. We must always look ahead to what guests are looking for and stay at the forefront of trends and technology. This ensures that when guests arrive here, they have access to the best of what is available, combined with exceptional service from our team.
What advice would you give to individuals aspiring to pursue careers in the hotel industry?
Work very hard. It is not an easy industry, but it is a beautiful one. It requires a lot of personal dedication and effort. It is a business of people. You are constantly interacting with guests and doing things for others. To do so, the first question to ask yourself is, do you love it? I love it and have been doing it my whole life. Anyone starting this journey needs to ensure it is what they love to do, and then they will enjoy their work for the rest of their lives.

This year’s exhibition explores three distinct themes: Dreams, Intimate Reflections and Sacred Realms. Each theme will be brought to life across five different Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas, with ten captivating pieces gracing each of their walls. These themes echo the very essence of Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas, inspired by the ancient Maldivian folktale of Khalid and Sitti, two starcrossed lovers whose story embodies dreams, introspection and a connection to the sacred.
Staying at one of the Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas transcends a typical Maldivian resort escape. Guests are enveloped by local artwork, and they can connect with these pieces and take a cherished part of Maldivian creativity home through on-site purchases.
The resort’s commitment to the local art scene extends beyond the exhibiting walls. For every artwork displayed and every occupied night spent in a Veyoge Gallery Villa, a contribution is made to each exhibiting artist.
Inspired by the Maldives’ rich history as a thriving ocean kingdom, Suvāsthi Gallery is a platform for Maldivian artists to share their stories and perspectives. The gallery’s retail outlet complements the exhibition, offering a treasure trove of unique souvenirs and locally crafted gems. Maldives Sets Sights on Welcoming 3 Million Tourists
Annually by 2026
The Maldivian government has set an ambitious target of welcoming three million tourists annually by 2026. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal made this announcement recently, emphasising the significance of the tourism sector as the largest revenue generator for the Maldivian economy.
Minister Faisal highlighted the upcoming completion of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) as a key factor in reaching this milestone. The government aims to capitalise on the Indian and Chinese markets, with plans to attract 500,000 tourists from each country.
Despite the positive outlook, the Maldives has experienced a decline in overall tourism revenue despite an increase in tourist numbers. In response, efforts are underway to promote the Maldives as a premier destination for Indian travellers through strategic partnerships and initiatives.
Minister Faisal remains optimistic, attributing the expected completion of the new VIA terminal as a catalyst for attracting more airlines and increasing tourist inflows. The Tourism Ministry is working closely with the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on promotional activities, and discussions with Indian officials have focused on improving connectivity and boosting Indian tourism to the Maldives.
The Maldives has welcomed over 1.2 million tourists as of now and aims to have 2 million by the end of 2024.
While the government expresses clear aspirations, achieving the target of three million tourist arrivals by 2026 will require sustained efforts and a turnabout in the recent decline in key markets.
