5 CREATIVE WAYS TO RECREATE YOUR LOOK
TO AMAZE
T
ime to embrace all the fun these warmer weather months have in store. And of course you want to look good doing it as well.
To help you find that perfect look, author and singer/ songwriter Tanille Edwards offers her top five beauty tips inspired by her latest romance novel “Broken” - the tale of Milan, a high school senior who is hearing impaired as well as being a burgeoning supermodel. Like Milan, Tanille’s tips aim to help you conquer your insecurities and find a look that’s uniquely your own. * Pack your tool kit. Never leave home without moisturizer, eyeliner inside the lower lash line and lip gloss. You never know when any of these items will be called into action. • Create eye-catching eyes. Pump up your eye color by coordinating a complementary smokey eye for a look everyone will notice and no one will forget. • Go for the gold. Looking for an angelic look? Try gold bronzer on the surfaces that the sun kisses like your forehead, the bridge of your nose and your cheeks. This will keep your skin looking radiant and protected as well. • Make the unnatural natural. Use a light sweet pink blush and apply it before you apply concealer for a look that’s very natural. Once you’re finished, line your inner lower lids with white eye liner and use a black eyeliner to complement your upper lash line. Finally, apply mascara but remember to go light. • Don’t be afraid to coordinate your look. Going matchy-matchy with your eye shadow and outfits isn’t always a bad thing. If you are going for a more causal warm weekend look consider going with a very light dusting of eye shadow. Choose a shade that matches your outfit. This will give you a put together look without a lot of effort. Applying any of these tips will give you a fresh new look for the year’s freshest season so don’t delay. Get creative because redefining yourself is something you can do and enjoy every single day. MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE (& TASTE BUDS!) Written by Brad Orchard
B
ehind a cheerful sign and layered beneath the surface of their remarkable hospitality, lies an utterly surprising fresh healthy and delicious experience At first blush, one might perceive Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe located in Hampton’s Peninsula Town Center L to R: Megan Fischer, Baker/Decorator as just another sweet shop conveniently situated Natosha Boyd, Kitchen Manager and to offer shoppers a pause in their brief spending Carolyn Whitfield, Owner/Baker spree. But au contraire my friend. Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe is so much more than Cupcakes. It’s a full fledged, full service bakery. They offer custom cakes for birthdays, weddings, corporate functions and all occasions including events and festivals. They cater any and all events with custom bakery items and specialty Camella Thomas, Store Manager sandwiches. Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe has been known to bake special order custom danishes and so much more. But the layers of misconception go deeper still, in that, besides being a full service bakery, all goods are expertly baked without harmful artificial colors, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives. All ingredients are completely natural and organic and one can really taste the fresh difference, even while enjoying the healthy alternative. Baking from scratch has a special meaning at Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe. Absolutely no cake mixes are used in the baking process! Some cake mixes may include the harmful THBQ ingredient which can be dangerous to one’s health. Ingredients at other establishments may include dangerous GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). But not at Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe. Dangerous, harmful and unnatural ingredients are strictly banned! So when they say it’s made from scratch, they mean 100% scratch and not every bakery can say that! In fact, they are most likely the only bakery in the nation certified as a health food restaurant! Even the kitchen design inside Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe is open and transparent so all guests can get an up close, bird’s eye view of all the natural ingredients utilized in all goods as well observing the baking procedure itself. In many ways, Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe is a healthy, organic bakery masquerading as a cup cake joint! And they offer so much more, serving healthy and delicious homemade sandwiches and featuring a full service espresso bar including milk shakes, smoothies, frappaccinos and even steamers! The coffee is beyond superb! It’s fresh roasted locally and is a special European blend that has won informal taste tests beating out popular blends from prestigious competitors. New at Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe are the all natural ice cream sandwiches made with 100% natural ice cream and Valrhona chocolate. And of special note is the “Light it up Blue Cupcakes” for autistic children, lovingly baked for these special young people because many autistic kids are highly susceptible to dangerous artificial ingredients. Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe was designed from the ground up for good taste, good health and a very good experience and they excel at all three. All the servers and bakers are warm, friendly, helpful and eager to explain and serve. Their kindness is refreshing and adds to the wonderful experience of spending time at this happy place! There’s free WIFI and always military discounts to honor the people who protect our nation! So, remember to look past the cheerful sign and take a closer look (and taste) at Ethereal Cupcakes and Coffee Shoppe in Hampton’s Peninsula Town Center. Franchise opportunities are available. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL ADVANTAGE By Jorge Yinat, Ph.D.
E
ntrepreneur is one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise according to Merriam-Webster. Do women entrepreneurs assume higher levels of risk in organizing and managing a business or enterprise? How, with additional burdens and societal norms, more and more women are becoming successful entrepreneurs? Let us explore some of the key factors influencing women’80’s entrepreneurship success. On my previous article, I shared some of the statistical facts influencing the growth of women entrepreneurs. For example, a “typical” female entrepreneur is married with children, herself the first-born child of middle class parents. Her business is most likely to be service-oriented, and she tends to start it around the age of 40. These barriers include problems with finance and credit, as well as lack of business and financial planning training. Furthermore, women business owners face additional challenges. These challenges include the ability to set short and long term goals, lack
of financing, or basic knowledge of business research. However, even with all these challenges, whatever the specific activity women engage in, women entrepreneurs become the heroes of free enterprise. Many of them have used innovation and creativity to build multimillion-dollar enterprises from fledgling businesses - some in less than a decade! These women have created new products and services, and have assumed the risks associated with these ventures. Successful women entrepreneur have things in common. They understand the entrepreneurial process in developing business and services in response to a market need. Entrepreneurship is a dynamic process of vision, change, and creation. It requires an application of energy and passion toward the creation and implementation of new ideas and creative solutions. Essential ingredients include the willingness to take calculated risks - in terms of time, equity, or career; the ability to formulate an effective venture team; the creative skill to marshal needed resources; the fundamental skill of building a solid business plan; and, finally, the vision to recognize opportunity where others see chaos, contradiction, and confusion. (Kuratko, 2013) According to the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity, 1996– 2010, a leading indicator of new business creation in the United States, 0.34 percent of American adults created a business per month in 2010, or 565,000 new businesses representing the highest level of entrepreneurship over the past decade and a half. The U. S. Small Business Administration reports that smaller firms reached a record 27.5 million by 2011. Of these, approximately 6 million were employing firms, and they accounted for 49.6 percent of U. S. private- sector jobs. Small firms made up 99.7 per-cent of U. S. employing firms. Further, women- and minority- owned businesses increased. Minority- owned businesses numbered
5.8 million, a 45.6 percent increase over the last five years; women- owned businesses totaled 7.8 million, a 20.1 percent increase over the five- year span. In examining the age factor, 15 percent of the self- employed were less than 35 years old, yet older Americans are also more likely than before to be their own boss. The percent of the self- employed population who were between the ages of 55 and 64, for instance, grew from 16.4 percent in 2000 to 22.2 percent later in the decade. This trend is perhaps an indicator that more baby boomers have sought “lifestyle entrepreneurship”or a second career later in life. Entrepreneurs will continue to be the answer to any economic downturn, and they will continue to lead economic growth in several different ways. Women entrepreneurs enter and expand existing markets, thereby increasing competition and economic efficiency. Some of the reasons cited for the exceptional entrepreneurial activity in the United States include: The United States is a culture that supports risk taking and seeking opportunities and women are not left behind in this category. Women are relatively alert to economic opportunity and have a relatively low fear of failure. Entrepreneurial education is key to the sustainment of business growth and innovative ideas. Jorge Yinat, Ph.D. is a Business & Management Consultant, Freelance Writer, Business Developer, Management Scholar, Philanthropist, and Community Organizer at J|W|Y & Co. ccording to a study done by LIMRA, a non-profit life insurance industry research organization, as many as 40 percent of U.S. households would have immediate trouble meeting household expenses if a primary wage earner were to pass away today. The study also showed that a majority of Gen X and Y consumers believe they need more life insurance than they currently have. Yet according to LIMRA, 30 percent of Americans have no life insurance at all and more than half of those who do are inadequately covered. At every stage of life, life insurance is an important consideration for protecting your family and your assets. As much as you may not want to think about it, you cannot afford to avoid making these important preparations. Life insurance can be vital to helping your loved ones maintain their standard of living after your death. If you have dependents - a spouse, domestic partner, children and/or an aging parent - you should ensure that your retirement pension and savings are sufficient to secure their future. Many Americans think that they can’t afford life insurance, especially when some are struggling to balance the daily and monthly expenses that most households face. But life insurance is often more affordable than you might think. In fact, more than 80 percent of Americans overestimate the cost of life insurance. Most people who are uninsured believe that a 20-year, $250,000 term
life policy for a healthy 30year-old would cost $400 per year. But the real cost would actually be only a quarter of that, or about the same cost as your Netflix subscription each month. Types of Life Insurance If you’re unsure about life insurance, you’re not alone. Many individuals are confused about how life insurance works. According to LIMRA, 70 percent of Americans failed a 10 question basic life insurance IQ test. The truth is not all life insurance plans are created equally. In fact, there is a whole host of different types of life insurance to fit your budget, lifestyle and needs. One of the most common types is term life insurance, which offers affordable coverage for a specific number of years and is great if you want to provide coverage while you pay off certain debts or until you’ve fulfilled some anticipated responsibilities, such as until your children are out of college. However, while term life insurance is an affordable way to get maximum coverage, it also increases in cost after the specified period, so it may not be cost effective in the long run. On the other hand, permanent life insurance policies are ones that do not expire. They protect your loved ones permanently. These plans typically offer more long-term security and may even accumulate cash value over time. While permanent life insurance may initially cost more than term life insurance, they can also be more cost-effective in the long term. Depending on your responsibilities and financial situation, the best life insurance plan for you may be term insurance, permanent or one of the many other options offered by insurance companies. Helping You Find Insurance Many leading insurance companies are making it easier than ever to put life insurance within reach. And some companies have new products for Americans who otherwise might not have easy access to life insurance plans. Life insurance can also provide an array of benefits to dependents such as: 1. Assistance in paying off debts such as a mortgage,

auto loan or credit card 2. Coverage of daily living expenses 3. Help with saving for expenses such as college tuition, weddings or starting a business 4. Paying for funeral expenses In addition to expanding their coverage to include families who may traditionally be underinsured, major life insurance companies have also worked to develop tools, such as insurance premium calculators, that help you select the type of life insurance that is right for your needs and concerns. Many companies have commissioned studies that explore the changing demographics, retirement ages, lifestyle habits and compositions of American households and have developed adaptable insurance policies in response. Other insurers have taken steps to diversify their offerings to better fit the needs of customers in developing nations. MetLife, for example, has developed insurance plans to target traditionally uninsured customers in the United States and abroad. The New Yorkbased insurer now offers prepaid insurance policies at Walmart stores in Georgia and South Carolina, with a first month’s premium of just $5. The company has also developed initiatives to increase access to insurance in the Bogot· region of Colombia by selling policies through supermarkets, door-to-door and allowing customers to pay their insurance premiums through their natural gas utility bill. It may seem complicated and you may not want to think about it while you’re in the prime of your life, but life insurance is easier to obtain and less expensive than you might think. There are several helpful tools and information available to help you find sufficient means to provide security for your families and loved ones. Picking life insurance shouldn’t be a burden but an easy process. You should be able to enjoy the aging process and eliminate the unknown when it comes to life insurance.

hile kids and parents alike eagerly await the fresh start of a new school year, the back-to-school season is not without its share of stressors for busy families. The start of school means new schedules, teachers, shoes, backpacks and friends; as well as new academic challenges. Adding some fun and excitement to the newness can help smooth the way. For example, allowing kids to help choose their outfits for the first day of school can help diffuse that nervous anticipation. Similarly, the chance to put a fresh set of pens to use or show off a cool new notebook can provide a distraction from those first-day jitters. If the shopping itself is adding stress to your household, ease the back-to-school burden on your family with these helpful tips to simplify shopping for the school year ahead.
Begin shopping as early as possible. Hunt bargains before the traditional back-to-school season to get the best deals. Not only will you save some cash, shopping before the rush will give you a wider selection to choose from, so you’re sure to find the items you need in the styles you (and your kids) want. Spreading the shopping over several weeks or months also allows you to distribute the expense across several pay periods, helping lessen the chance that you blow your monthly budget with one mega shopping excursion. Be a savvy online shopper. Check out your favorite brands and retailers online, and sign up for their email alerts, so you’ll be in the know when the best deals hit. Many retailers now offer online-only specials, so watch ads closely to know when you’re better served
Make note of your inventory. School lists often carry over each school year, so make sure you aren’t buying multiples of things you already own. Some supplies are more exciting when refreshed every year, but buying the same old boring ruler year after year is simply a waste of money. Make a list with your children. Put everything you need on that list, and be clear that once the list is done, it’s done. Having everyone on the same page with a complete list helps ensure nothing vital is forgotten, and the list can serve as a handy tool to keep your budget in check. Get uber organized using vibrant Sarasa gel pens by Zebra to create lists color-coded by kid or
midyear. Devote a special area of your home to keep extras in stock, and take advantage of sales during back-to-school season or buy in bulk to get a better price. Put quality ahead of price. While it’s tempting to go for cheap when your list is long, remember that sometimes quality buys actually save more in the long run. You can buy a ton of cheap pens that skip, or simply stop working. Or you can look at alternatives, such as Zebra’s Z-Grip brand, which are affordable, quality pens that allow children to focus on writing, not on the pen. Known for delivering a smooth-flowing writing experience at a great value, a Z-Grip pen truly delivers for young learners. Make your children shopping buddies. Involve your kids in the back-to-school shop- ping process by giving them a budget. Help them allocate money for all the expenses, including clothing, school supplies, shoes and more. Use the opportunity to talk about how shopping smart for the necessities can leave room for some fun buys, too. Reduce and reuse. Save plastic and money by encouraging kids to embrace reusable items, such as lunch bags in place of paper sacks and plastic containers instead of sandwich bags. If water bottles are allowed at school, look for a durable refillable option that can be used again and again. Make the old new again. Turn barely used items into something new by decorating or adding stickers. Not only is this a fun activity that can help get the kids excited about and engaged in planning for the year ahead, it’s easy on the budget and eco-friendly. Keep leftover supplies on hand to revive the enthusiasm with fresh designs at the end of the quarter or semester.
making purchases in-store or online. Also keep an eye out for free or reduced shipping for extra savings that make it even cheaper than buying in person when you factor in the cost of gas. Remember that you can also rely on social media to follow back-to-school offers and hashtags.
Swap with other moms. Make back-to-school time more fun by hosting a swap event with other moms for clothing, backpacks, shoes, etc. It seems that kids are forever trading with their friends, so embrace that mindset and see what exciting new treasures you can find for your kids to call their own.
Create a back-up bin at home. You may find that your kids consistently run out of certain items

Something I highly recommend is to identify your values and what it is you feel you “lost” in that event. Start brainstorming and make a list! You can do this exercise by yourself or with someone. Why a list? Because a list can help you to put in concrete form something which is abstract inside you. Through this exercise you can open a window to hope and explore another point of view in your situation. This exercise can help you to express your feelings and thoughts, discover and recognize another aspect of you, identify your needs and/or focus in new goals. And that process can be a way to recover your hope or even make it stronger.

oo much time indoors can often lead to cranky, stir-crazy kids. But you can keep your kiddo occupied with kid-friendly, educational activities that will appeal to their imagination. * Use a table, chairs and a sheet to create a tent or fort in your dining room or living room. Then, set out a blanket in front of the tent and make a circle using potatoes in place of rocks and a flash light or lantern for a fire. Get the whole family involved and take turns telling one another funny stories. Remember to pack some good campsite treats, such as popped popcorn and dried fruits. * A great adventure story, like the serial story “Quetzalcoatyl,” can really get their imagination going. This tale about a magical sea creature and the boy he befriends can be found each month in the pages of the free children’s newspaper Kidsville News! * There are few things better on a dreary weather day than to curl up in a cozy corner in warm pajamas with a good book and a trusted teddy bear. Designate one corner of your home as the book nook with lots of comfy blankets, pillows and a reading light. Then snuggle up and read some stories together. Many families with college-bound dorm-dwellers rent a moving truck to make the job easier. “We definitely see a spike in rentals in later summer, as college students return to their campus residences,” says Don Mikes, senior vice president of rental for Penske Truck Leasing. “Moving everything in a rented truck is a lot easier than packing stuff into multiple personal vehicles.”
general list of the contents. Make an inventory list of all your boxes and what’s in them. Remember, thousands of kids will be moving in at the same time you are, and unlabeled boxes can easily get lost in the confusion. • Plan ahead - far ahead. Truck rental companies get busy during back-to-school season, so reserve your truck at least two weeks in advance of moving day. Delaying could leave you without the transportation you need. For most college moves, a 12- or 16-foot truck will do the trick. For help selecting the right size truck for your move, visit www.PenskeTruckRental.com. • Drive safely. Driving a truck can take some getting used to; they’re taller, wider and heavier than your
car or even your SUV. You’ll need more stopping distance to halt a rental truck, especially when it’s loaded with weight. Beware of low-hanging tree branches and building overhangs, and give yourself more room to turn corners. If you have to back up, it’s a good idea to have a reliable friend guide you from outside the vehicle. If your trip will require an overnight stay or a break in your journey, be sure park in well-lit areas, padlock the rear of the truck and lock the cab before leaving the vehicle. Finally, keep important documents like registration information, dorm confirmation, your driver’s license and credit cards with you never packed in a box in the back of the truck. Stock up on water and healthful, energizing snacks to keep you alert, hydrated and satisfied on the road. You can find more moving tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com.
Mikes offers some tips for packing a rental truck with everything you’ll need for college: • Be realistic about what you’ll really need. You may be tempted to take every piece of clothing, pair of shoes and favorite book you own, but will you really need all that? And more importantly, will it all fit in a dorm room that you’ll likely be sharing with at least one other person? Probably not. Pare down to what you’ll need most, such as clothes and shoes you wear all the time. Many colleges also provide students with a checklist of essential items that you can use to trim down what you’re taking. • Pack in stages. If you wait to the last minute to try to pack everything, you’ll create stress and confusion. Start early by packing things you’ll need at college but don’t necessarily need at home, like extra-long sheets, towels, bath accessories, etc. Use sturdy boxes that aren’t too large to handle, and use foam pellets and bubble wrap to protect fragile items. Seal boxes with packing tape and use a marker to label each with its contents. Keep one box open for last-minute items; that box will go on the truck last. Along with your rental truck, you can get moving blankets and hand trucks to make the move easier. • Label wisely as you go. Put your name on the box (in case it gets separated from you) and a AUGUST 2015 RENEW

Anointed To Conquer Empowering Women To Reach Their Potential RENEW: What inspired you to start this ministry? Lillian Rodriguez: My own story. I grew up in church but, at one point I was feeling sad and overwhelmed with situations and problems. I was very shy and had a very low selfesteem. Suddenly, I discovered the power of the word of God, my life was immediately transformed. I knew that God was powerful, that He had all the answers. I heard of stories and testimonies of how He liberated, saved, restored and forgave but, did not know or understood how it applied to my present situation. Once I understood the power of God, His unconditional love, and grace I realized that many woman were in the same condition that I was. Even many had the biblical knowledge but they did not have the joy and hope of Jesus Christ in their lives. I then started having women conferences and retreats inviting special guests to minister but, it turn out to be too expensive. It was then that I realize that God had prepared and called me to
teach and minister to women what I lived and learned through my own personal experiences and “Anointed to Conquer” was born. I strongly believe God has equipped every woman with the tools to defeat her weaknesses, fears, and doubts. RENEW: What kind of training do you provide the women? Lillian Rodriguez: We organize retreats, conferences, camps, and breakfasts for women. “Anointed to Conquer” provides classes, studies and or instruction on how to overcome low selfesteem, building healthy relationships, how to improve your marriage, interior healing, leaving your past behind, the importance of forgiveness, worship, and discovering your potential and personal talents. “Anointed to Conquer” focus on today’s women needs.

Her Broken Places
BY TRACY WAINWRIGHT Marla stared at the file folder in front of her. She had demanded the crazy thought swirling through her head be dismissed, but it was not obeying. Especially after the conversation she’d had at lunch. Her supervisor Bob was always a good sounding board when she had a tough client or sticky situation. She hadn’t come across any stickier than this. Then there was the phone call that answered all of her questions and seemed to throw the door wide open. Being single wasn’t a barrier – not legally. Although that’s what she had qualms most about. Well, that and the fact that she’d have to give up Kimberly as a client. If she adopted her baby, she could not possibly continue as her counselor.
16 RENEW AUGUST 2015
Adopt her baby. It was absolutely crazy. Ridiculous. And it made her heart try to leap out of her chest. There was no way. Well, there did seem to be a way logistically, but how in the world would she actually live it. By herself. With a baby. A knock at her door brought her back to the present. Her secretary stood at the door, wearing a goofy grin and holding a bouquet of flowers. Marla raised her eyebrows. “These just came for you.” Her mouth dropped open. Who? She didn’t even need to ask. There was only one person. “Thanks.” She stood and accepted the overflowing vase. Setting it on her desk, she pulled the card out. “Dinner tonight. No more excuses. I’ll pick you up at 7. Love, Carlos.” She had thought her heart was out of control before. Now it was acting like a car on the audobon. No limits and no slowing down. Maybe what she’d never allowed herself to dream really could come true. She’d resisted Carlos all this time because she didn’t believe she could ever have a family of her own. She knew adoption was an option for a lot of people, but how many guys would be willing to enter into a relationship knowing they couldn’t have their own biological children? Not many. Well, that would determine it. She’d meet him for dinner and lay out all the cards on the table. She’d tell him everything. If he were really
interested, really loved her as he said he did, he’d stick around and they could figure things out. Together. Tears filled her eyes. The possibility of it both thrilled and scared her to death at the same time. Especially since she was going to present the caveat of throwing a baby in the mix immediately. If that were God’s plan. Maybe she’d read all the possibilities wrong. She could have misconstrued everything going on because of her own selfishness. Her deep desire to really have her own family. And then there was Amber. She hadn’t been able to resolve the issues with her. Or even get the girl to speak more than five words in passing. “O Lord, I desperately need you. Your guidance, your wisdom, your direction. I have no idea what to do with all this in front of me.” She closed her door laid her head on her desk and continued her prayers until her phone buzzed to alert her of her next client’s arrival.
