FACILITY MANAGEMENT IN THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR a cura di Ing. D. Morea, Ing. C. Mattoni
Within the current uncertain economic context, one of the main purposes of the healthcare organizations, which are increasingly recognized as complex health production industries, is to sell services, attracting the greatest number of patients, increasing their turnover and at the same time reducing the operating costs. According to this approach, health authorities cannot focus only on the main activity (core business) but they also have to invest resources in each activity concerning patients, in order to guide them to give a positive overall assessment. Health facilities need to consider the strategic role played by those services supporting the core business: even though these services do not represent the hospital’s core business, they assume a crucial economic relevance and need an ad hoc management. Therefore, within a perspective where secondary services turn into basic elements to reach corporate objectives, Facility Management comes to light, aiming at the optimal management of the no core business activities. This paper means to explore this promising discipline, analyzing the opportunities offered by the implementation of its instruments throughout the complex healthcare sector, where the supply of no core services represents a key element, which unavoidably affects patients’ perceptions of health care quality.
