In my mind there are very few sites more breathtaking that the vibrant colors of fall. This issue’s cover photo is no exception—it is a spectacular combination of Oregon City heritage portrayed by the Judge Thomas Ryan House and vivid accent of the tree. This issue of the Oregon City Around Town magazine will be delivered to 8700 local households and businesses; 1300 additional copies will be provided on request, at the library, via displays at local ‘hot spots’ and visitor locations. This publication and its distribution is simply not possible without

Re-imagining Willamette Falls Nestled in historic downtown Oregon City, Willamette Falls is one of the nation’s most beautiful and historic natural wonders. The largest waterfall in the Pacific Northwest, Willamette Falls was long an important cultural and gathering place for Native American Tribes. Lewis and Clark make many references to the “falls of the Multnomah” and the tribe that lived there. The falls is the end of the Oregon Trail, and throughout the 1800s, was the site of energy generation for Oregon’s early industries and cities, including the state’s first paper mill and the world’s first long distance electrical power transmission from Willamette Falls to Portland. The Blue Heron Paper Company, which closed its doors in 2011, was the last in a succession of businesses that contributed to a strong working waterfront in Oregon City. The 23-acre site formerly occupied by the mill is for sale, with purchasers interested in the site. With master planning underway, Oregonians

have a once in a lifetime opportunity to help define how this area is transformed for economic redevelopment, public access, healthy habitats, and historical and cultural interpretation.

Public Access Ensure access to the falls and places for people to gather

Project leaders include the State of Oregon, Metro, Clackamas County, Oregon City, and the Trustee or Designee (if the site is sold) of the former Blue Heron Paper Company site. With their leadership and support, the Willamette Falls Legacy Project planning process launched this summer to envision how Oregonians can establish a statewide legacy and reconnect with this incredible natural and cultural asset.

What We’ve Heard So Far The project partners have met with dozens of civic, business, and community groups and have heard from over 2,500 participants online, in addition to the comments received at several community events. Participants support the four core values of economic redevelopment, public access, healthy habitat, and historic and cultural interpretation. They also shared lots of great ideas for Oregon City Around Town

InTheKnow how they’d like to see these values implemented onsite over time. Some of the top vision elements include: • Public views and access to the falls • Park and open spaces • Concert venue • Honoring historic space/uses • Restaurants • Mixed use development • Housing options • Active recreation on and along the river • Hotel and/or convention facility • Jobs for local entreprenuers

Illuminate Oregon City Contributed by City of Oregon City Public Works Oregon City is moving forward with a public works project at the City’s historic Municipal Elevator in Downtown Oregon City. As part of a local match to a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant, the City is preparing the unique structure at the base of 7th Street for a placemaking art project that will use projected light as an artistic medium.

In partnership with Metro and DAO Architecture a new paint palette and architectural lighting plan will update this structure. Over the last few months, DAO Architecture has developed recommendations for facade treatments to the Oregon City Municipal Elevator. Originally designed by Gordon E. Trapp of the engineering firm Stevens and Thompson and built in 1955, the all-concrete Elevator was designed in a modern style, referencing neo-expressionistic and futuristic architecture. The elevator has minimal ornamentation but is sculptural in form, with the columnar shaft capped by the aerodynamic shape of the observation deck. The goal of the facade treatment (part of a local match toward an NEA grant) is to create a dynamic 24-hour appearance of the structure that respects the Mid Century Modern era design of the building. When this work is complete

the structure will also work as a canvas for a projected light art exhibit by artist Tiffany Carbonneau. The design team consists of DAO Architecture, Reyes Engineering, Biella Lighting, and Peter Meijer Architects. Martin Montalvo, Operations Manager for Oregon City notes, “This structure is iconic and the way it’s painted and lighted should reflect the unique character of this vertical street.” “The Oregon City Elevator, to our knowledge, is one of only four municipal passenger elevators in the Western Hemisphere. It is very heavily used by the local community but surprisingly few people outside of the Oregon City area know about and have experienced it,” DAO Architecture Principal Joann Le notes. “It is absolutely tailored to its location in the City’s downtown, has great historical significance, and is quite

a hidden gem.” The unique and strong aesthetics of the concrete form was an opportunity as well as a challenge. Our effort was focused on enhancing this strength with subtle, elegant, and appropriate upgrades without diminishing its utilitarian essence. The Elevator’s observation deck, tunnel entrance, and main shaft will be repainted with a timeless combination of silver and white. New energy-efficient flood and blue accent lighting will also be installed, along with new entry signage, all designed to fit appropriately with the Elevator’s existing scale and detailing. The colors, lighting, and signage will work as a single composition, providing interest throughout the day as well as into the evening hours. This is an amazingly forward-looking structure, and really captured the spirit of the times during the 50s. It was a period of optimism and celebration of Oregon City Around Town

modern materials and technology, and the Oregon City Municipal Passenger Elevator is a great example of transportation design that is both functional and iconic. Site preparation and facade improvements including lighting, painting and landscaping began in the summer and the painting should be completed in early fall.

Tiffany Carbonneau is an Assistant Professor of Art in Sculpture and Expanded Media and Digital Art at Bellermine University, Louisville, Kentucky. She completed her Masters in Fine Arts at Ohio University in 2010. Exhibitions of her projected images art have been installed in several locations in the United States as well as in Cape Town, South Africa and in Lodz, Poland.

Have a safe, enjoyable holiday with these important safety tips Every year throughout the United States during the holiday season tragedy strikes hundreds of families. Statistics show that fires related to candles, Christmas trees, holiday lighting and portable space heaters cause a dramatic increase in residential fires between Thanksgiving and New Years. Clackamas Fire District #1 wants you to have a safe holiday season. Please review the following safety tips with your family.

Trees • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant.” • When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness because a fresh tree is less of

a fire hazard. The tree should be green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. • Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. • When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of

the way of traffic and don’t allow it to block doorways. • Be sure to keep the stand filled with water, because heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.

Lights • Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted. • Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them. • Check all tree lights, even if you’ve just purchased them, before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections. • Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks. • Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

• Keep wicks trimmed to one-quarter inch.

• Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals.

Did you know that the number of candle-related residential fires in Oregon has seen a dramatic increase in the last decade? Candle-related fires significantly increase during winter holidays.

• Remember to make sure you have working smoke alarms.

• Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Always use nonflammable holders, and place candles where they will not be knocked down. • In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them. • Wear gloves to avoid eye and skin irritation while decorating with spun glass “angel hair.” Follow container directions carefully to avoid lung irritation while decorating with artificial snow sprays. • Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are opened. These items can pose suffocation and choking hazards to a small child, or can cause a fire if near flame.

• Stay in the same room with burning candles; never leave them burning unattended. • Keep candles away from things that can burn and out of reach of children and pets. • Avoid candles with combustible items embedded in them such as twigs, flowers or leaves.

Fireplaces • Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers, and other decorations from fireplace area. • Check to see that the flue is open. • Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. Planning for a crowd Use these guidelines as general rules for party planning. Per person:

• Six ounces of meat or main entrée

• Six to eight appetizer pieces (one to two bites each)

History of a recipe The green bean casserole, made from green beans, Campbellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cream of Mushroom Soup and crunchy French Fried onions, was first created in 1955 by the Campbell Soup Company. Dorcas Reilly led the team that created the recipe while working as a staff member in the home economics department. The inspiration for the dish was to create a quick and easy recipe around two things most Americans always had on hand in the 1950s: green beans and Campbellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cream of Mushroom Soup. A history… Oregon City is the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi River. Established in 1829 by Dr. John McLoughlin at the base of the thundering Willamette Falls, Oregon City was the destination for thousands of Oregon Trail pioneer settlers in the 1840s. With its rich heritage and natural beauty, the City at the End of the Oregon Trail continues to connect visitors to our nation’s pioneering past. This fresh pasta dish provides a lovely combination of traditional Christmas colors to beautify any dinner table. Capellini, also known as Capelli d’angelo or angel hair pasta, is a very thin type of long pasta, similar to spaghetti in length. Since the pasta is so thin, it cooks very quickly, making it a great pasta choice for people who need to prepare pasta in a hurry. As compared to the thicker spaghetti noodle, capellini pasta cooks in about two to three minutes when added to rapidly boiling water.

Ingredients 2 Tbl unsalted butter 2 Tbl pinenuts, heaping ½ to ¾ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 2 cloves garlic, chopped ½ cup diced tomato, more if you like ¾ cup white wine 1-1/2 oz baby arugula (about 2 good handfuls) 10 oz cooked angel hair or capellini pasta (al dente) 1 oz (1/4 cup) freshly grated Parmesan 2 oz feta cheese (1/3 cup) crumbled

Directions Toast pinenuts in butter with salt and pepper until both nuts and butter are nicely brown. Add garlic, tomatoes and white wine, then reduce by half. Sauce will be thin but intensely flavorful. Add arugula, pasta and Parmesan to pan and toss. Tilt pan to see two tablespoons of liquid puddle. If too dry add a little bit of water. If sauce puddles too much, cook in pan until pasta absorbs extra sauce. Divide onto two plates, placing pasta on bottom and arugula on top. Top with feta. A suggestion from Bugatti’s menu: Great with grilled chicken breast or Columbia River Steelhead.
