You know when realtors say a house is â&#x20AC;&#x153;quaint?â&#x20AC;? Well, the charm of having a downtown between a hundred foot tall bluff and a river has its tradeoffs. While parking is readily available most of the time, sometimes it requires a bit of a hunt. There are no parking restrictions on weeknights after 5:00 pm or on weekends but during the workweek meters are in full effect. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to move your car after 2 hours? There are several places around downtown with 4 or more hour parking.

KeepingItLocal The best happy hour downtown depends on what you are looking for. Try Tall Boy Tuesday at IceHouse or a $4 chicken quesadilla and discounted draft beers at Ranee’s on Main. Looking to expand your palette beyond typical American fair? Try tapas at Nebbiolo, Vietnamese at Pho Thi, or a burrito made in the style of Don Pepe’s native Chihuahua region in Mexico. After dinner check out the entertainment. A number of downtown’s bars have live bands especially on the weekends. Weekly options include Trails End Saloon’s “American Roots Jam” every Thursday night or Verdict Bar and Grill’s karaoke every Friday. When your night is coming to a close, enjoy a walk along Main Street. Be sure not to miss the colorful lights reflecting off Singer Falls or the much anticipated Illuminate Oregon City Elevator.

After picking up a free card from a participating business or downloading the iPhone or Android app, you will be able to accumulate points. What makes the First City Card so unique? Whatever suits your fancy!

The benches along the river at 13th Street and 99E are a great place to sit and relax. Looking to unwind over craft beer? Canemah Bluff Natural Area is a perfect place to experience spectacular views of the Willamette River, explore rare oak habitat, photograph colorful spring wildflowers and learn about the area’s rich past. Tucked away in Oregon City’s historic Canemah neighborhood, this 330acre natural area is one of the signature205 accomplishments of the region’s efforts to protect nature.

ExploreOC During the spring, Canemah Bluff bursts with wildflowers, including Camas and Brodiaea lilies, white larkspur and rosy Plectritus. Birders can find chipping sparrows, red-breasted sapsuckers, white-breasted nuthatches and orangecrowned warblers, as well as hawks and eagles soaring above the river.

Steeped in history Canemah comes from “canim” or “canoe” in Chinook. Situated just upstream of the rushing Willamette Falls, the riverside area of Canemah is where hundreds of generations of Native Americans beached their canoes to portage around the falls. Beginning in 1844 with Absalom Hedges, settlers in Canemah built warehouses and offered stevedoring and transportation services to move freight and steamboat passengers around the falls. The area along the river below Canemah Bluff soon became a shipbuilding center, with steamboats running between Canemah and upstream farming communities. Some of the earliest settlers, including Hedges, live on through Canemah streets named after them. The boom ended in 1873, when the Willamette Falls Locks were built across the river; no longer did freight have to be unloaded upstream and reloaded downstream of the falls. Canemah’s heyday was past. What’s left today is a gorgeous slice of river, old streets, blufftop views and rare habitats.

Protecting the natural area Metro purchased land on Canemah Bluff piece by piece as opportunities arose, using funds from natural areas bond measures approved by the region’s voters in 1995 and 2006. The bond measures were designed to protect water quality, wildlife habitat and opportunities to enjoy nature.

Let’s take it Outdoors! It doesn’t take an 80 degree day to get people around here out the door. In fact, 80 degrees may just be a bit too warm for some! Find a mild, 60+ degree day and folks are headed to the home improvement and garden stores preparing to work in the yard or plant a garden. You might find us playing at the park, biking with the family or enjoying a bar-b-que with family and friends. There’s a saying around here: “if the ground isn’t wet, it’s time to go outside”. We’ve pulled together suggestions of things to do during this time of year right here in our magnificent city of firsts. Even if you’ve lived here your whole life and drive past the great history of Oregon City, it’s never too late to stop in and see where we get our roots. This is a great time to start a healthy habit of exploring our Farmers Market which is packed full of local produce! We also suggest you take a hike, quite literally, on one of Oregon City’s nature paths. Our Tips & Trends are to take advantage of the cool spring and warm summer to engage outdoors! It’s only a step away.

P.O.P. – Power of Produce! Jackie Hamond-Williams Oregon City Farmers Market Springtime at the year-round Oregon City Farmers Market means glorious bunches of flowers, spring greens, farm eggs and much more as every market is a familyfriendly event too. Not only can you shop for fresh local foods, listen to live music and learn about gardening and cooking, but kids get to participate in their very own market club. Started at the Oregon City Farmers Market by a HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) grant from the County in 2011, the kid’s P.O.P. (Power Of Produce!) Club encourages children , ages 5-12 yrs, to eat fresh healthy

foods, meet the farmers who grew it, learn how to grow their own produce and even how to cook! Kids register for free by signing their Passport to Health and receive a POP shopping bag, a POP button and a little drawstring bag with $2 in wooden tokens to purchase vegetables, fruit or food plants. Once registered they get their passport stamped and $2 every time they come to an Oregon City Farmers Market. In addition, at the summer Saturday Market, kids can participate in POP Club Fun activities each week, including cooking demos, gardening classes held by the Master Gardeners, the Lions Club’s “Strides” physical activity program, favorite farmer button-making, grinding wheat berries with a stationary bike, cider-pressing... and many more fun events during the summer!

In 2013 the POP Club signed up 1,781 kids and had 5,187 kid shopping trips! Markets in many areas of the US are beginning to organize their own Power Of Produce Clubs mirrored on the Oregon City Farmers Market program... so even in this day Oregon City is still a city of firsts! The main Oregon City Saturday Summer Farmers Market opens May 3rd and runs through October 25th at the Red Soils Campus, 2051 Kaen Rd off Beavercreek Rd, 9:00 am-2:00 pm. Special exhibits in 2014 include Industries and Engineering: The Power of Willamette Falls Museum of the Oregon Territory

and the Progress of Clackamas County highlighting the history of industry powered by Willamette Falls, the second largest waterfall in America by volume. The Steamboats exhibit overlooking the falls gives a short history of the major means of transportation on the Willamette River in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Murdock Gallery offers changing exhibits through the year. The current exhibit, Dished, showcases artifacts, photos, recipes, and histories related to food in Clackamas County and exhibits subjects ranging from the pioneer times, World War II, prohibition and more. View the Principal Fishes of Clackamas County, a mural by noted comic book cover artist Alex Schomburg . The mural is currently on loan from Portland General Electric.

The William L. Holmes House 536 Holmes Ln May 30 – Sep 14: Fri – Sat, 12:00 – 4:00 pm $4.00 Adults, $3.00 Seniors, $3.00 Youth 6-17, Children 6 & under free William and Louisa Holmes were pioneers who joined the ‘great migration’ in 1843. The Holmes family settled on a 640-acre land claim at what was then the south edge of Oregon City. Their home, completed in 1847, is the oldest American built house in Oregon City and was the scene of early government meetings and many social events. The first territorial governor, Joseph Lane, gave his 1849 inaugural address from the balcony of the Rose Farm, and the celebrants gathered on the lawn below. The property was nicknamed the Rose Farm by friends and neighbors because of the many roses Louisa planted, in the garden. So Embark on a trip through Oregon City, find an historic building, home, garden or artifact that Inspires you and Engage with our theme by taking a photograph between May 1 and May 31 and submitting it to the contest. No fee to enter. There will be one winner in each of three categories: Adult, Teen and Youth with cash prizes of $75 for Adult, $50 for Teen and $25 for Youth. Winners will be announced at the first City Commission meeting in July. Tree health care By Nick Bezzerides, Sense of Place Permaculture, LLC Landscape trees perform as more than aesthetic accents to human habitats. They intercept rainfall and reduce storm runoff, filter the air, reduce summer air temperatures, and capture CO2. Several studies have even found the presence of trees is associated with reduced crime rates. Because so much is riding on our landscape trees, it makes sense to follow a policy of do no harm with regard to caring for them. The purpose of this article is to present some do’s and don’ts for optimizing tree health. • Don’t top your tree. Researchers agree that topping does not increase tree safety. In fact, topping increases likelihood of tree failure by creating large wounds and poorly attached re-sprouts. It may also send growth into lateral limbs, causing dramatic expansion of the tree’s width. Crown reduction through use of drop-crotch pruning cuts is one acceptable option to reducing size that may give your tree a few more years. Trees sometimes outgrow their space. Planting the right tree in the right place helps to avoid this problem. • Do prune early to remove structural defects and set a new tree on a path toward development of good branch architecture. Ya know that old saying… ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ Well it applies here, too. Once a tree grows with a defect for a while, it can be disfiguring, expensive, and difficult or impossible to correct. Nursery practices have gotten better, but don’t assume that all trees from the local nursery are perfect. Inspect that tree before you bring it home. • Avoid mower “blight” by creating a mulch ring around the tree, to keep the trunk from

being wounded by lawn care equipment. Be sure to keep the mulch 4” away from the trunk. • Don’t water landscape trees on the same schedule as your lawn. Lawns need less water more frequently. Trees watered on a lawn system are more likely to develop troublesome surface roots and will be less tolerant of dry conditions. If they need to be irrigated, trees like being watered deeply on a less frequent basis. • Don’t place fill soil or pavement over the rooting area. Protecting the area under the tree’s drip-line is a good start, but a protection zone twice the diameter of the mature canopy is better. Tree roots need oxygen to breath and fill soil makes it harder for oxygen to get down to roots. In addition to killing roots, fill around the trunk can cause decay, and development of girdling roots, both of which will negatively impact tree health. Trunk and root decay can create very dangerous, unstable trees.

• Do inspect your trees at least twice a year, once in the spring to look for winter damage and cracks, broken branches, lean, decay, and once in the summer to make sure that foliage density and color is normal. The number one rule of DIY tree care is Be Safe. Hiring a professional is much less expensive than a trip to the hospital. The Oregon Construction Contractor’s Board licenses tree care professionals in Oregon and requires bonding and liability insurance. You can check contractor license status at their web page (www.oregon.gov/CCB/Pages/index). So, next time you walk by that ol’ tree in your yard, give it a pat, commit to its care, and realize that in the Pacific Northwest, our landscape is largely defined by the presence of these long-lived, graceful beings. z

Hiking is a wonderful way to combine quality family time with exercise and exploration of nature. A few simple hints will help make the day a success for you, your children or your inner child! Modify your goals – let the kids set the pace. Planning a shorter route and taking rest breaks will help keep the kids from becoming overly tired. Dress for success – children get cold more easily than adults and are likely to get wet if the trail you choose offers a stream or pond along the way. Pack a light jacket and a change of clothing for each child. Pick a hat that shades their face even on cloudy days. Closed shoes that are comfortable and already broken in will make for happier young hikers. Pack a first aid kit that is child friendly Children’s sunscreen; children’s ibuprofen; liquid antihistamine; a lot of adhesive bandages (many different sizes and colors); anti-itch lotion for bug bites; tweezers to remove splinters, ticks and needles; anti-bacterial wipes; moleskin for blisters; an Epipen if your child has severe allergies. Water and snacks – Carry a water bottle for each family member, with extra water for longer hikes. Hiking uses energy and children need to replenish more frequently than adults. Pack energy snacks - nuts, string

Keep Children Entertained on a Hike Let the children help plan the hike the day before – collect maps and brochures for routes to pick from. Have a scavenger hunt - challenge kids to identify things that are fuzzy, small, rough, bumpy, smooth, big, soft, sticky, squishy, lumpy, wet, living, growing, round, triangular, moving, make noise, hard, smelly, etc. Engage the senses – stop and listen – how many birds can you hear? Feel the texture of the bark on a tree or the moss on a log. Smell crushed pine needles or trailside flowers. Bring along a small notebook and markers or colored pencils. Take a break and ask them to write about what they see or draw a picture. Another way to add interest to the adventure is to have the children help make a trail mix at home before starting out on your hike. Consider buying a hydration backpack for frequent hikers. After over 30 options were evaluated by the Oregon City Library Board, the Mayor and City Commission of Oregon City voted unanimously on June 19, 2013 to support the expansion of the existing 1913 Carnegie library at 606 John Adams Street. Bonds sold by the City would fund a portion of the cost. Oregon City voters will be asked to vote on Measure 3-435 in the May 20, 2014, to allow issuance of these bonds. The 5,000 sq. ft. Oregon City Library at the Carnegie Center is more than 100 years old and originally served a population of approximately 5,000. Today, the Library is working within its original space to serve a growing population of more than 54,000. Usage of the existing Library is active despite its limited size. Last year the Library circulated 880,250 items and had 191,934 visits. In the last several years, open hours have increased from 23 hours per week to 56 hours per week. However, usage is 18

limited by space.The Oregon Library Association Public Library Standards indicate that Oregon City needs a much larger library than currently exists. After studying alternatives for years, the City Commission resolved that a 15,000 sq. ft. expansion and renovation should occur at the existing Library at the Carnegie Center. The cost of the expansion/renovation is approximately $10 million. Through responsible financial management, the City has set aside $4 million for the project, leaving a balance of $6 million to complete it. To obtain the lowest interest rates on financing, the City proposes to issue up to $6 million in general obligation bonds which are secured through real property taxes.The City does not intend to raise taxes to fund the project, but rather plans to repay the $6 million with existing revenue sources, including the Library District and City funds.

This ballot measure seeks authorization from the voters of Oregon City to allow the City to borrow up to $6 million through the issuance of general obligation bonds over a period of up to 20 years to expand/renovate the Library. The Oregon City Charter and the Oregon Constitution require voter approval of the indebtedness even though the City does not intend to raise property taxes and intends to pay for the bonds with existing annual income streams dedicated only for this purpose. Proceeds from the bonds may be used only for the purpose of renovating/expanding the Library. The Library project would include new spaces to read, relax and study, spaces for children and teens, space for a larger collection of library materials, a meeting room for programs and community use, more internet computers, furnishings and fixtures and other improvements.

InTheKnow Frequently Asked Questions What is the timeline to build the expanded library? In early 2014, the City will hire an architectural firm and project manager for the new library. Early in the design process, the selected architects will host community meetings to solicit community input on the plans for the renovated library. If Oregon City voters approve the project in May 2014, the City plans to break ground by the end of 2014, with the goal of reopening the renovated library by early 2016. Will the library be open during construction? Given the difficulties of providing library services during a building renovation, it is likely that the library will provide limited services from a nearby temporary site. At this time, staff is evaluating possible options. How would an expanded library impact Carnegie Park? Carnegie Park is a beloved community public space, enjoyed year round by residents of all ages, with the public library as its centerpiece. A major design goal is to maintain the overall functional and aesthetic integrity of the park. The popular spray park and playground areas will not be impacted. A history… Oregon City is the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi River. Established in 1829 by Dr. John McLoughlin at the base of the thundering Willamette Falls, Oregon City was the destination for thousands of Oregon Trail pioneer settlers in the 1840s. Ingredients

No oranges? Used halved grapes or diced apples. Instead of chicken, try using 1 cup cooked/drained garbanzo beans or 1 cup of small tofu cubes.

1 cup cooked, diced chicken 1/2 cup finely chopped celery 2/3 cup canned, drained mandarin oranges 1/4 cup minced onion (green, red or yellow) 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 large whole wheat tortilla 4 medium lettuce leaves, washed and patted dry

Yield: 4 servings

Directions

Serving size 1 “wrap”

1. In medium bowl, mix chicken, celery, oranges and onions.

Prep time: 20 minutes

2. Add mayonnaise, soy sauce, garlic and pepper. Mix gently until chicken mixture is coated. 3. Lay tortilla on clean cutting board or large plate. With a knife or clean scissors, cut tortilla into four quarters. 4. Place 1 lettuce leaf on each tortilla quarter, trimming leaf so it doesn’t hang over edge of torilla. 5. Place 1/4 of chicken mixture in the middle of each lettuce leaf. 6. Roll tortillas up into a cone, with the two straight edges coming together and the curved edge creaging the opening of the cone. Eat like a sandwich. 7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
