Happy Summertime!
Woo Hoo! It’s finally here. Will it be lazy days for you- or are you a vacation-crazy family and have big plans to travel this summer? Whether you’re in vacation mode or staycation mode, the Willamette Valley has SO many amazing things going on. It’s the Big To-Do Issue! From Movies in the Park, to the packed schedules of local libraries- to picking your own fruit and veggies, I’ve compiled a LOT of information to help you make the best of your sweet summer family time. Jenifer Trivelli outlines how you can plan to make the most of this summer by being intentional on page 6. Plan it! Do it! Remember it forever! Check out the list of 50 activities to encourage some off-screen time, for kids of all ages on page 28. The County Fair is coming, and the fruit stands are all open, and I just get so nostalgic thinking about all the affordable and fun ways my kids and I have enjoyed life in Oregon. I hope that your summer is most magical, and full of tradition and the happiest of memories. I tucked Splash Pad info into page 19. Don’t miss it! As a past professional photographer, I also give a few tips on page 23 about how you can create amazing photos of your fun family, so you can remember these swiftly passing summers. Summers spent with our kids are numbered. I hope you are able to use this directory to make as many fun memories as you can in the warm sweet days ahead.

P ENT E “TELL ARME, WHAT IS IT YOU PLAN TO DO WITH YOUR ONE WILD AND PRECIOUS LIFE?”
How I’m feeling as I think about this summer:
CREATING AN INTENTIONAL SUMMER 2019
Words that describe how I want my kids to feel this summer:
by Jenifer Trivelli M.S.
Words my kids use to describe how they want to feel this summer:
Jenifer Trivelli is an author/writer, educator, and certified yoga instructor for youth and adults. A Salem parent of two, she has a master’s degree in counseling and has worked with families and educators since 2006. You can learn more about Jenifer at her website www.wisemindservices.com.
Many of us experience a mixture of emo-
tions as summer approaches. Graduation parties, Father’s Day, final exams, spring sports and dance recitals, and end-of-school-year celebrations have some of us flying by the seat of our pants in a frenzy with so-manyexciting-things-to-do-and-places-to-be! And here in the Willamette Valley, the emergence of light and warmth from the dark damp of winter provides a meteorological nudge to do and see it all.
How I usually feel at the beginning of summer:
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. It can be energizing to be part of something bigger in your community - through your family’s neighborhood, school(s), dance studio, and sports teams - particularly when we are experiencing more isolation than ever before in our human history.
How I usually feel at the end of summer:
What follows in this article is an opportunity to reflect on the season ahead of you and create some intention for navigating all the activity in a way that is anchored by a bigger vision. Take a moment to consider the questions below - jotting your answers here or grabbing a piece of paper to record your thoughts.

6
What are my checkpoints along the way that can help me stay aligned with my vision for summer?
Here are a few suggestions for using the information you wrote in response the to the questions above: Get input, feedback, and commitment to the family vision from every member of the family. People can contribute different ideas - there doesn’t have to be a consensus. The point is having a shared vision to return to throughout the summer as you evaluated how to spend time together. It has the aside benefit of modeling collaboration and team leadership skills to your kids. If there’s a pattern in your life of ending summer feeling burnt out, disappointed, or any other undesirable feeling, make a plan now of how to shift it to your desired set of feelings. For example, if you wrote “connected” as something you’d like to feel this summer, what are ways you can get that feeling? Include ideas that are free/low cost, can be done spontaneously, and are otherwise easy for you to implement.
What is my plan to care for myself over summer?
Start a brainstorm list of implementable ideas (either on your own or with your family), but only lock in on the ones that are achievable and have buy-in from anyone else who is involved. The main idea here is to be open to the many, many ways it might be possible to experience the summer you are making space to reflect on now.
What are signs I am over extending, over-planning, people pleasing, or otherwise out of alignment?
At the end of summer, you can revisit your list and ideas to reflect on what worked well. This is a process you can repeat in fall for the school year, or in any season of life when change is on the horizon. Mary Oliver said it well in her poem The Summer Day: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

5perfect PRO Tips for taking kid pictures. 1. Pick the perfect time. Naptime is NOT the perfect time. :) Make sure your little darling is at their most darling-est, by choosing the best time according to THEIR schedule. Outdoor pictures are best taken early morning and just before the sun goes down. Avoid direct, harsh light outdoors during the afternoon hours.
2. Get on their level. Prepare to get down and dirty to get those money shots!
Squatting, laying and sitting at your child’s level will make all the difference in the quality of your images. Plus, it helps engage them, and you- which can only mean super moments captured that will be memories forever.
3. Let’s talk catchlights. See the sparkly eyes on the cutie below? Sparkly eyes
bring life to your images. How to get the perfect catchlights? Professional photographers look for light at “2 and 10”. Visualize a clock. If you see sparkle shinies in your kiddos eyes at 2:00 and 10:00 you’ve hit the perfect lighting motherlode! Try placing your subject near a window, or other light source and bring those eyes to life!
4. Poses aren’t everything. Smiles either, actually. Capture your child the way they are in the moment. Some of the cutest pictures are ones where your sweetie is pensive, thoughtful or even a little pouty. Let the pictures tell a story.
5. Fill the frame with fun! There’s nothing worse than an adorable moment caught way too far away. Come in close to your baby and don’t be afraid to fill the frame with all that spunk! By zooming in, you limit any distracting background that detracts from your little superstar. The biggest tip for taking perfect kid pictures is to shoot, shoot, shoot! No regrets about filled flash drives and photo albums. The only bad picture is the one you didn’t take.
Happy Snapping!

NOT BORING
Summertime! At our house, that means that everyone is super-excited for the first two weeks. Sleeping in, playing outside, later bedtimes, etc. But it seems that after the first two weeks, it loses it’s luster a bit and the kids are suddenly bo-o-o-ored. I don’t know about you, but for me, relying on the “You could always clean your room.” doesn’t always work. Ok, it never works. And when I’m put on the spot to come up with something amazing to do, I just never can seem to satisfy. My suggestion? Grab some of these great ideas, and write them on slips of paper or popsicle sticks. When the kids start the summer song of their people.. “Mommmm. I’m boooored!” point them toward the treasure cashe of activities. Better yet- Join in for a summer to remember! 1.Make a fort! Gather books and snacks to read inside. If the weather is nice- take it outside! 2. Create chalk creations on a sidewalk or driveway. Outline each other in funny positions! 3. Get messy with finger painting, oil painting or watercolors outside. 4.Use a squirt gun and water to make some unique art on hot sidewalks. 5. Write (type) a novel! If that’s too overwhelming, write short stories for bedtime, or as a gift. 6. Find a stupendous recipe and make an amazing meal. Pick one country a week and expand your tastebuds! 7. Make Sun-Prints with leaves on construction paper. Tape a leaf to paper, leave it in the sun! 8. Google “Minute to Win It” games and have a competition. Winner gets no chores!
