SOUND STUDY

I N T R O The progression of graphic design has many contributing factors. Over time, graphic design and typography have explored functionality with a range of approaches by adapting to the public’s ability to understand and process visual communication. The modernist Swiss movement had a focus on purist communication, breaking the mould of unnecessary ornamentations used in previous approaches to design. Post-Modern designers saw design as a means for expression over communication. The work of pioneering Post-Modern designer David Carson (who had no background in design) encapsulates the lack of restriction that technology brought designers, now being able to express through print in ways never seen before This is a study enabling graphic styles to delegate musical artworks in order explore different mannerisms to functionality.

1. Orpheus (1947) Modern approach breakdown.

Whilst researching Igor Stravinsky’s Orpheus, I found out that the piece was created in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine in California, 1947. Further research led me to discover that Orpheus is a character from ancient Greek Mythology, leading me to discover that many sculptures of the character have been made. I decided that images of these sculptures could make for an interesting image for music artwork.

After making the decision to create an outcome an approach that focuses more on obscure typography, starting with the image of a sculpture of the head of Orpheus, I decided to make a Post-Modern style cover that has some reference to the classical style of the music through use of serif type. The Post-Modern typographic motif I decided to employ was transforming the word Orpheus to create a morphed version of the word. This morphed word is then juxtaposed with normal Sans Serif Type (Futura).

3.Donuts (2006) Modern approach breakdown. 8

This idea came of experimenting photographs taken of a donut at different stages of eating it, which was one of my initial ideas for the project.

This idea came of experimenting with my pleminary typographic sketches over a warped image of concentric circles I created to represent ‘Donuts’
