or me it all started with a dream that involved a clear mission. I wanted to create a platform to showcase what was happening NOW in order to give the connoisseur-audience an appetite for what could and would be happening TOMORROW. This year we celebrate a decade of doing just that. We are Ventura Centrale bringing the forefront of design to Milan during this wondrous week, in which everybody who is anybody in design will gather in Italy for a week of inspiration. I am grateful and happy to be a part of this happening and would like to thank all the people who have helped me to achieve and realise in Milan the things I set out to do. Thanks to: our team, partners, all our fans, ambassadors and followers from the earliest days - without your generous support we would not have been able to turn Ventura Projects into a global phenomenon with satellite events in places like New York and Dubai. And lastly: the designers who have been with us over the last ten years. Thank you for your bravery to take Central your work Station - to trust us with it - and show the entire world what you are made of. You are literally changing and shaping the M future of mankind. With this year’s Ventura Future and Ventura Centrale we pay homage once more to the incredible natural force that is the forward thinking of designers from all parts of the world. I hope I can welcome you all to Milan to start sharing our dreams once more.

10 YEARS OF COLLABORATION BETWEEN VENTURA PROJECTS AND MAARTEN BAAS

TEXT ORGANISATION IN DESIGN PORTRAIT CLAUDIO GRASSI

NUMBER 10? MV “NUMBERS DON’T MEAN THAT MUCH TO ME.” MB “THE HIGHEST NUMBER? SOMETHING LIKE THAT? THE MOST FEASIBLE.” MV “TEN IS ALSO A MOMENT IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING A GROWN-UP.” MB “IT’S ALSO THE FIRST SERIOUS ANNIVERSARY YEAR. FIVE DOESN’T COUNT.” Although Maarten Baas (1978) and Margriet Vollenberg (1978) studied at Design Academy Eindhoven at the same time, they never actually met. But that completely changed later on. Currently they both live in Utrecht, almost as neighbours. And what’s more they meet up in professional collaborations during the season’s biggest circus: Milan Design Week. Edition 2019 is a milestone for them both and the reason for this very special collaboration. Baas is launching new, autonomous work at Ventura Centrale and Vollenberg is celebrating the tenth edition of Ventura in Milan. Time for a catch-up.

8

MAARTEN BAAS PRESENTED HIS IPHONE APP AT VENTURA LAMBRATE (2010).

Vollenberg looks back at the development of Ventura Projects which she started in 2010 with Ventura Lambrate, as an event in the city district of Lambrate which at that time was still mostly undiscovered. The aim was to facilitate a platform to launch work by designers, both newcomers and professionals. Not only definitive end-products were welcome, but also more conceptual designs. Although Lambrate is now in the past, the Ventura formula has been continued and refined in new events in Milan, London, Berlin, New York and Dubai.

a bigger professional stage and offers designers, labels and companies the chance to really let rip.”

LITTLE IDEA

Maarten Baas is a regular guest at Ventura events in Milan. MB “Yes, we go back quite some time. First of all without Ventura of course – it didn’t exist back then, but Margriet was certainly the person who knew how you needed to profile yourself as a designer in Milan. I launched Clay together with her in 2006. Sculpt the following year and in 2008 I had a little idea for Milan.” MV “That’s usually how MV “Ventura Future in it goes. Ventura Centrale is more theatrical, provides

Vollenberg and Baas are collaborating again for Ventura Centrale 2019. MB “It started with the announcement of a ‘little idea’. This time it was really very short notice. (sorry about that).” MV “Maarten needed 10 seconds to pitch his idea, and I was immediately sold on it. It’s going to be another typical Maarten Baas thing but also very different and new: a shock to the system.”

WHAT’S IT GOING TO BE?

MB “Well... it’s not just appearing out of the blue. Milan is the epitome of an attention economy gone crazy, and I want to do something precisely on this theme in Milan. In 2017 I worked together with Lensvelt at Ventura Centrale to present May I Have Your Attention Please? (Maarten Baas won a Milan Design Award

with this, ed.) and in the Netherlands I’ve made work based on a TV show and a monument that can be interpreted both as a tribute to the person in question and to myself.” Vollenberg laughs. “With his work, Maarten holds a mirror up to people, but in a way that is both absurdist and sensitive. He doesn’t spare himself either. That’s what makes it so strong. And he’s aware of his own duality and plays with this.” MB “I want my work to get attention, just like any other artist does, and at the same time I’m driven crazy by all that hustling and selling yourself to get attention. In Centrale I really get to grips with this. I make fun of the attention economy and the opinion culture, and in the process I give visitors an experience of their own. What I personally like is that as

visitor you become part of the work. You’re inundated with opinions and then within a very tight format you’re able to share your opinion of my show.”

MILAN THE CIRCUS. MILAN THE ATTENTION ECONOMY. MILAN THE HUNDRED THOUSAND OPINIONS. STILL FEEL LIKE GOING THERE?

HOW MANY OPINIONS DO THEY THEMSELVES DEAL WITH DURING 7 DAYS OR SO MB “Not going to Milan is OF MILAN DESIGN WEEK? a bit like not turning up MB “Work it out, Ventura receives about a hundred thousand visitors, who all already have an opinion when they come to my show. Then the press have something to say, the critics have an opinion, colleagues... So in a week at Milan there’s no shortage of opinions.”

at your own wedding. My work isn’t always on show but I’m there every year.” MV “There are plenty of design weeks in the world that you can miss now and again, but not Milan. You go to Milan. Circus and all.”

DO YOU YOURSELF HAVE AN OPINION, TOO?

Future (H)eart(H) —8 Dutch Design visions for a livable earth A SPECIAL PROJECT FEATURED AT VENTURA FUTURE

A topic that will be thoroughly explored during this edition of Ventura Future is biodesign. With the support of the Embassy and the Consulate-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Milan and curated by Organisation in Design, the project Future (H)eart(H) - 8 Dutch Design visions for a livable earth takes you into a world filled with concrete base flowers that help preserve the ‘big 5 of pollination’ - Matilde Boelhouwer - it proposes ways of using synthetic biology to create organs that can replace the animal products used in traditional Chinese medicine - Kuang-Yi Ku and it shows biodegradable urns that give our loved ones back to nature in a responsible way - Nienke Hoogvliet. All eight projects will show the latest developments in bio and conscious design. PASCALE THERON STUDIO
