1 Bower at Sight Unseen OFFSITE No it’s not a door – it’s a mirror, and one of many playful objects crafted by Bower, a newish New Y ork design studio run by Danny Giannella and Tammer Hijazi. The duo describe their process as that “happy place of experimenting and exploring a detail without being sure how it will manifest itself in the end.” That curiosity-seeking spirit – of finding something new in the familiar – seems to characterize many of the pieces being featured at Site Unseen OFFSITE, where over 60 studios have been handpicked by the show’s curators, Kokoro & Moi. 7 Bjarke Ingels and Kibis for Fritz Hansen One of the most intriguing projects to open in Manhattan of late is Bjarke Ingels’ VIA 57th West, a trapezoid residential building at 625 W 57th St. Shaped like a mountain peak – as so many of BIG’s buildings are – this most-desired-building-in-NY C features rental units with balconies that simultaneously face onto a communal courtyard and across the Hudson River. Working with Fritz Hansen, Bjarke Ingels and Kibisi have designed a lounge chair specifically for and named after the building. The chair, yet to be unveiled, will be on display at the Fritz Hansen booth at ICFF.
5 The Bouroullec brothers at the Vitra & Axor showroom It’s already been a busy year for the Bouroullec brothers, who have rolled out an impressive number of new products from their still relatively modest Paris studio, including a television set designed for Samsung that looks like a fabulous piece of furniture. The brothers will be on hand for the North American launch of four new products by four manufacturers: Artek, Axor, Nanimarquina and Vitra. The novelties will be part of a special installation designed by Ronan and Erwan. On view on three levels at the Vitra & Axor showroom in the Meatpacking District, 29 9th Ave.
8 Lee Broom at Broom off Broome British product and interior designer Lee Broom is set to unveil his own store in New Y ork. Named Broom off Broome (for its location off Broome Street in Soho, at 63 Greene Street), the pop-up shop opens its doors for one month, starting May 12. This is Broom’s first retail venture in North America and for the occasion he is releasing a new lighting product to be presented alongside 50 pieces from his existing collections, including the Hanging Hoop Chair, the Drunken side table, and one of his best known pieces, the Crystal Bulb.
6 Handmade Industrials and Ventura New York at WantedDesign Manhattan WantedDesign has two locations: one in Manhattan, at The Tunnel; the other in Brooklyn’s Industry City – the epicentre for many of burgeoning studios. Both shows promise to be packed, with both established brands set up alongside up-and-comers and programming that includes dozens of events, talks and exhibits. One such showcase is by Ventura Lambrate, a must-see Milan Design Week event for spotting young designers fresh out of school. At WantedDesign Manhattan, the curators present a selection of 14 emerging Dutch talents worth knowing about. Included in the lineup are Handmade Industrials of The Hague, who created these colourful and wonky vases – the Make&Mold RY B collection – using a flexible mould and bio-degradable polymers. WantedDesign Manhattan takes place May 13 to 16, 11th Avenue, between 27th and 28th streets.
9 Yabu Pushelberg’s new funiture line of Linteloo The studio doors of Y abu Pushelberg will be open on the evening of May 15 to visitors hoping to get a first glimpse at Heath & Oiseau, the inaugural collaboration between the interior design studio and the German manufacturer Linteloo. Not surprisingly, the collection, which consists of soft seating and bookcases, is a lot like so many of Y P’s five-star hotel and luxury retail interiors: a tasteful combo of modern elegance and timelessness. YP, located at 88 Prince Street, welcomes visitors on May 15, 6-9pm.

Rogier Arents will show a project called "Heart Calligraphy", a collaboration with biomedical engineer Bin Yu. Inspired by the philosophy behind Chinese calligraphy that states that the mind leads the brush, Arents and Yu researched how biodata can be translated into a sensitive visual language in order to enhance self-awareness.

Inspired by the philosophy behind Chinese calligraphy that states that the mind leads the brush, Arents and Yu researched how biodata can be translated into a sensitive visual language in order to enhance self-awareness.
A few projects developed by the designers included in the showcase revolve around textiles: Simone Post's "Post-Vlisco" consists in a series of rugs made with faulty materials from Vlisco, leading producer of batik-printed fabrics for the African market. Using folding and cutting techniques, Post created patterned rugs inspired by the big rolls of textile in the factory. The resulting products could be considered as unique pieces characterised by endless colour combinations.
Fascinated by fungi Lizan Freijsen carried out an extensive photographic research into stains, moulds and moisture spots, coming up with a series of carpets and blankets inspired by traces of stains and decay (the New York showcase will be accompanied by her original photo-archive, a very interesting document that will allow visitors to get further information on the background research for this project).
They therefore produced a biofeedback installation in which the heart leads the brush and participants are invited to explore the physical, cognitive and emotional influences on their physiology; the resulting prints are abstract portraits depicting the subconscious processes of the human body. Studio Rik ten Velden's "Knitted" and “Knotted" collections are the results of hands on textile experimentation: the former features removable woolen shades applied on elegant steel frames, the latter originated from a visit to the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam where Ten Velden received a crash course in knotting techniques from senior craftsmen, creating a chair and a lamp with one single rope knotted on the object.

Using materials such as paper, felt and resin in experimental ways, and combining the history of Europe and the Middle East, Siba Sahabi created a room divider inspired by the Moorish architecture of the 12-17th century in Southern Spain, and a series of sculptural vessels that recall in their shapes and silhouettes ancient Greek vases made of felt.

Carina Wagenaar's jewel-like wall medallions prompt viewers to pay extra attention to even the smallest detail. Intricate configurations of every day objects, these assemblages capture life experiences and tell stories of consumption from our modern lives.
The power of the collective is presented and celebrated by Envisions (Adrianus Kundert, Jeroen van de Gruiter, Iwan Pol, Sanne Schuurman, Simone Post, Studio Plott, Studio Truly Truly, Tijs Gilde, Bastiaan de Nennie), a group of designers showcasing a collection of objects that hint at the research process, hoping to trigger a dialogue between designers, clients and manufacturers. The focus on materials also characterises Rutger de Regt and Marlies van Putten's Handmade Industrials' "Make & Mold RYB Collection" – a series of unique hand sculpted and therefore rather wonky looking vessels and vases, made with a flexible mold and biodegradable polymers.

Projects revolving around biotechnologies and material researches are the most interesting ones, especially when the designers tried to look at alternative applications of such disciplines or manufacturing methods, a great example is Hongjie Yang's "The Primitive Collection".
Last but not least, in some cases fashion was a starting point for interior design projects: Susanne de Graef's "Rhythm Of Light" lamps are indeed based on the shape of the crinoline skirt, and they transform a historical garment into a modern day interior design product. Like all the events organised by Ventura Projects, this New York-based showcase is an unmissable one for all sorts of creative minds on the lookout for something refreshing, inspiring and engaging.
Inspired by biotechnology and luxury, Yang created objects such as vases and boxes made with a mono layer of human kidney cells, an idea that hints at the possibility of employing lab grown human material in luxury object design.

Unconventional use of modern technologies Material research and experimentation with technology marks design from the Netherlands. Closely following the latest developments, designers look into alternative applications of biotechnology or manufacturing methods. The design process as a final product As Dutch designers are taught to think conceptually, finding a translation of a concept into design can uplift the actual design process as an outcome. This opens up possibilities for developing a project in collaboration with a suitable partner. The impact of Dutch Design in the ’90’s Before the 1980s, Holland was primarily known for its graphic design. The term Dutch Design started gaining popularity in the late 1980s and was closely associated with a group of Dutch designers who enjoyed international acclaim in the early 1990s. With a minimalistic, experimental approach to design along with a sense of humour, designers such as Studio Job, Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius, Marcel Wanders, Droog and Moooi contributed to the growing prominence of Dutch Design. The world became acquainted with the design culture of the Netherlands through presentations during the Salone de Mobile in Milan. From the early years on, Ventura Projects recognised that the way this new generation of Dutch designers needed to present their work was not being met by the mainstream fair of Fuorisalone. After 10 years of scouting and organising alternative exhibitions in Milan, Ventura Projects started a whole new design area during the Salone del Mobile, in the post-industrial district of Lambrate. For seven years now, Ventura Lambrate has been the go-to place for spotting new talent, young designers and conceptual projects.

Design from the Netherlands today In recent years, the design landscape has changed in line with broader historical developments. Influential schools such as Design Academy Eindhoven and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam have altered their curriculum in response to important developments like the economic crisis, growing cultural diversity and environmental issues. At Ventura New York - the Dutch edition fourteen participants will show their approach to design – an approach that questions the role of the designer in our current time. The selected projects generate new insights, processes and solutions. This latest generation of Dutch designers is both internationally and locally oriented, pragmatic and yet idealistic. Displaying traditional techniques alongside the latest technologies, exploring the boundaries of materials in parallel to craft and tradition, this exhibition shows the answer of Dutch designers to the world of tomorrow.
SUPP
The Dutch Embassy: America is ready! Ventura New York – the Dutch edition is made possible with the support of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, which felt that the market in America is bouncing back from recession sooner than European market and is ready for fresh outlooks on design, with a prospect of new collaborations. Since not all influencers and buyers travel all the way to Milan, an entire wave of Dutch designers is left unseen to the American eye. Ventura Projects, being the number one showcase for thought-provoking Dutch design at the Salone del Mobile, is seen as the ideal associate in this effort to bring the new generation to New York. Along with the partnership with WantedDesign Manhattan that began in 2015, the Dutch Embassy believes this is the moment to break new ground and offer visitors to the event a fresh approach to the definition of design. This initiative is also backed by the Dutch Creative Industries Fund, which is supporting both the featured designers and Ventura Projects in their visit to New York City. Made possible with the generous support of: Consulate General of the Netherlands Creative Industries Fund NL Organisation in Design About WantedDesign With its marquee events during NYCxDESIGN in May, WantedDesign is a platform dedicated to promoting design and fostering the international creative community at large throughout the year. Founded in New York City in 2011 by Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, WantedDesign has established itself as a constant and staunch supporter of U.S. and international design via events, conversations, and partners and its yearly programming aims to nurture New York City’s design dialogue. WantedDesign’s original event location, the landmark Terminal Stores building on 11th Avenue in West Chelsea’s Historic District, has become a creative destination for the international design community in May, offering participants and visitors a unique and dynamic experience. The event also serves as a popular and inspiring meeting point for designers, manufacturers, buyers, distributors, craftsmen, students, design institutions, the press and all design lovers. May 2015 marked the first year for WantedDesign’s new, second location: WantedDesign Brooklyn, at Industry City in Sunset Park. This strategic expansion reflects the growing importance of Brooklyn as a hub for multidisciplinary creative thinkers and makers. The May events offered a 360-degree experience with innovative installations, memorable products, pop-up stores, interactive experiences, convivial lounges, thoughtprovoking student workshops, engaging discourse and more. WantedDesign is an active part of NYCxDESIGN and aims to showcase New York as a dynamic and unique design destination.

Meer informatie over Ventura New York: the Dutch edition vind je hier.
