VENTURA LAMBRATE 2014: WHAT’S NEW Ventura Lambrate celebrates its five-year anniversary with great exhibitions by Jaime Hayon, Lidewij Edelkoort, Concern, Lago, Design Academy Eindhoven, IN Residence – Design Dialogues, Lensvelt Contract together with OMA architects, University of the Arts London, Vij5, GVM with Robot City, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Anahuac University Design School Mexico, Zuiderzee Museum and Textielmuseum, Mindcraft, CHP...?, New Window x Lex Pott and more than 130 others. The Ventura Lambrate design district has added new venues this year, including the Ventura Living Room at Via Ventura 14. This impressive industrial hall will showcase creativeness in all its facets, with the pop-up restaurant of Amaro Creative Industries and partners Lago, Mosa and Lovethesign and work by cutting-edge brands and talented young designers.

Special project this year is Ventura x Maarten Baas. Ventura Lambrate surprises everyone this year by having a satellite project shown in the city centre of Milan, while embodying the same significant atmosphere of the district. Ventura x Maarten Baas features the creative world of renowned designer Maarten Baas, coming back with his first solo show in years, based on Baas’ ever experimental, entertaining, yet critical way of working. Here’s a preview of what’s happening at Ventura Lambrate 2014: VENTURA TEAM UP & VENTURA HIVE Design is undergoing a period of transformation, shifting to a more interdisciplinary approach. Interpersonal relations conducted through design have cultural, social, political and economic implications. In Ventura Team Up this trend becomes visible: designers team up with each other and with people in different fields to realise the next step in their practice. The new platform Ventura Hive presents up-and-coming talents like Hunch, Liberte Design Studio, Micromacro | Sara Bernardi, Koskela and Studio Bycolor + Kanaguya. The name “hive” hints at the idea of creatives being hard-working bees, each in his or her own hive. Ventura Hive gives talented designers the opportunity to express themselves in a group exhibition for maximum exposure. Ventura Hive is produced in partnership with Officine Tamborrino.

Fetishes Flourish in Fashion Exhibition Merging the sensual with the primal in fashion and design is the focus of internationally known trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano’s curated exhibition for Ventura Lambrate. On display in the city of design and fashion, the collection addresses the innate need to attach a spirit to physical objects that are encountered on a daily basis. Everyday objects such as smartphones, tablets and clothes take on an a persona, becoming animated. Attachment to regularly used objects can turn into fetishes of their own while a new layer becomes relevant in a world of increased mobility where we are returning to nomadism. 'Humble everyday objects can attach us to a different place, another time or an alternative state of mind. Our smartphones and tablets could therefore be considered fetishes too. After all, the word ‘fetish’ harks from West Africa, therefore, a more primitive aspect of the current mania for Africa is fitting and to be expected. Colouring style brown instead of black,' says Edelkoort.

Ontwerpers, meubelmerken, designacademies en hippe musea verzamelen zich deze week op het grootste designevenement ter wereld, Salone del Mobile 2014 in Milaan. Voor de 240 deelnemende Nederlandse partijen is Milaan een `sociale verplichting` als je mee wil tellen in de designwereld, stelt David Heldt van de gids Connecting The Dots. `Het gaat goed met je en dus sta je hier. Maar ik adviseer iedereen ook op een beurs te gaan staan waar je het commercieel goed kunt doen.`

Na de Italiaanse designgemeenschap is de Nederlandse het grootst. De helft van de 240 Nederlanders zit in de wijk Ventura Lambrate. In deze oude industriewijk, die dient als alternatieve expositiewijk, zijn voormalig ontwerpers Margriet Vollenberg en Margo Konings vijf jaar geleden begonnen. De nieuwe locatie is goed betaalbaar en kent 30% Nederlandse exposanten. Afgelopen jaar waren er 80.000 bezoekers. `Wij huren locaties en verhuren ze weer door en begeleiden ontwerpers vervolgens met onder meer hun pr. De kunst is verhuurders duidelijk te maken dat ze volgend jaar de huur niet plotsklaps kunnen verdubbelen. We zitten graag hier, maar kunnen dit zo ergens anders opzetten.`

Il ‘tessuto’ di Ventura Lambrate Silvia Airoldi Da 550 application visionate, intese come proposte complete anche del concept espositivo, a 170 selezionate. Comincia da qui la quinta edizione di Ventura Lambrate, il Fuorisalone divenuto imperdibile per chi ricerca nuove interpretazioni del design, tendenze, stimoli e sperimentazione, giovani talenti. Dalla sua nascita, nel 2010, sono più che triplicati il numero dei designer partecipanti, più che duplicati gli spazi delle mostre e il numero di visitatori professionisti e non (dati 2013). Il progetto del design district milanese, creato da Organisation in Design – lo studio fondato dalle designer Margo Konings e Margriet Vollenberg da oltre dieci anni si dedica a progetti organizzativi ad ampio spettro, per il mondo del design e i suoi protagonisti, dalla comunicazione e PR al project management e alle attività di consulenza e curatela – è diventato un concept flessibile, Ventura Projects, già applicato a Berlino e alla Biennale Interieur di Kortrijk. The Milan Design Week is the most important and renowned design event in the world; for more than 50 years, this event has announced the start of the new design year internationally. Every April, the official fair ‘Salone del Mobile’ and all associated events (with the overarching title ‘FuoriSalone’) occupy the center and reach out into the neighbourhoods of Milan, transforming ARGOMENTI C the city into a hub of creativity. The Milan Design Week is the most important and renowned design event in the world; for more than 50 years, this event has announced the start of the new design year internationally. Every 201 O.i.D ©20 April, the official fair ‘Salone del Mobile’ and all associated events (with the overarching title tion ‘FuoriSalone’) occupy the center and reach out into the neighbourhoods of Milan, transforming ARGOMENTI CORREL the city into a hub of creativity. Within this exciting frame, Organisation in Design made the conscious decision to create a new and completely curated exhibition district called Ventura Lambrate. The project started in 2010 and quickly grew to become a cutting-edge design district with internationally acclaimed creatives, never-before-seen niche projects and extraordinary pop-up restaurants. Since 5 years, a selection of international debuting and established designers, academies, institutions, companies and labels have the opportunity to present their creations here, in a coherent design circuit to the large, influential and professional audience of the Milan Design Week. With every edition Ventura Lambrate is shaped by its continuous focus on the essence of design and on designers’ growing capacity to expand their boundaries to research, self-production, performances and other fields such as health-care and science. Exhibitions coming from all around the globe run through each other at the individual spaces and the clustered themefurnished locations in and around the streets of ‘Lambrate’, a vibrant transitional area between urban and industrial in the northeast of Milan. The Ventura Projects are curated exhibition areas dedicated to present international designers, design studios, design labels and brands, design institutions and galleries. Each Ventura Project presents a coherency of carefully selected exhibitions, temporary initiatives, as well as special projects, creative restaurants, etc. The Ventura Projects attract a large professional and influential audience consisting of journalist, photographers, bloggers, cultural institutions, curators and representatives from the corporate world. The first Ventura Project originated in 2009, when – after 10 years of experience in scouting design talents and organising exhibitions in Milan – Organisation in Design met the architect and cultural entrepreneur Mariano Pichler, who was working on a major requalification project to regenerate the post-industrial borough “Lambrate” in Milan. Starting from the charming atmosphere of the Lambrate district and the desire to create a never-before-seen area during Milan’s prestigious Design Week, Organisation in Design launched the Ventura Lambrate show. After Ventura Lambrate’s successful first and second edition, the Ventura Projects have expanded into established exhibitory circuits: the annual editions of Ventura Lambrate, the biennial Ventura Interieur and the special edition of Ventura Berlin. Every edition is committed to present the most interesting expressions of contemporary design, with a particular eye on: emerging trends and talents, debuting and established creatives, top quality and innovative design labels, new processes and production methods, conceptual and niche projects Organisation The Ventura Projects are initiated and produced by Organisation in Design, a studio specialised in managing a broad spectrum of design related activities. The 5th edition of Ventura Lambrate opened yesterday in Milan. The exhibition has grown substantially since it began, in a sit down with Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings they agreed that it had but that it was a natural growth not something they had aimed for when they started the event. The pair acknowledged that as the event will inevitably keep growing, there is an ever present need to balance the size of the exhibition with the quality of exhibits. The Other Hemisphere opened today at Via Ventura 15, the second outing for the Australian curated design exhibition led by Sarah K. The presentation has 12 design practices from Australia and New Zealand attempting to simplify our built and designed world. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done this literally, conceptually, in the finished product and in the way the product makes us use it and behave. With over 24 individual designers involved in this exhibition, we see a move towards collaboration (a reflection of the true nature of designing and producing) with the distilling of many ideas into one outcome. designEX is the principal partner of The Other Hemisphere exhibition and is joined by Assemble Papers, Spicers, St Ali Coffee, La Marzocco and Bio Cup in bringing Australian and New Zealand design design to the rest of the world.

Netwerkborrel viert Nederlands ontwerp De start van de Design Week en Salone del Mobile in Milaan wordt traditiegetrouw ingeluid met een borrel ter viering van het Nederlandse ontwerp. Dit jaar werd de netwerkborrel georganiseerd door het Nederlandse Consulaat-generaal in Milaan, Het Nieuwe Instituut en het Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. Speciale gast van de avond was minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap Jet Bussemaker. De netwerkborrel vond plaats in Lambretto Art Project in de wijk Lambrate. Deze ruimte werd voor de gelegenheid beschikbaar gesteld door de Design Academy Eindhoven, Het Nieuwe Instituut, het Textielmuseum, het Zuiderzeemuseum en CHP…? jewelry in context, waar tijdens de hele Design Week hun presentaties te bezoeken zijn. De Design Week in Milaan is bij uitstek het moment waar de kwaliteit en diversiteit van het Nederlandse ontwerp in een internationale context tot zijn recht komt. Tijdens de Salone del Mobile staat heel Milaan in het teken van meubelen productdesign. Naast de beurs zelf zijn er honderden kleinere evenementen en presentaties te vinden van meubelmerken en ontwerpers. Producenten, inkopers, journalisten en andere designprofessionals van over de hele wereld bezoeken jaarlijks dit grote evenement. De samenwerking tussen alle partijen leverden een goedbezochte en levendige avond op, waarbij het ontwerp centraal stond. Het Stimuleringsfonds wil graag iedereen bedanken die heeft meegewerkt aan het slagen van deze avond. Para nós, o VL se distingue pela sua capacidade de adaptação rápida aos desenvolvimentos dentro e fora do campo do design, pela forma mais “ampla” de expor. Arnout Meijer’s Thanks for the sun, a series of lights that mimic the morning sun, daylight and setting sun through adjustable LEDs. A project that questions our throw-away culture and proved a hit during the Salone is François Duquesnoy’s ‘One Place, One Week, One Interior’ or Collectibles series. The designer spent a number of weeks travelling from city to city, collecting discarded furniture off the street. In each city he would create new items of furniture from what he found on the street, colour coding the items to match the 2 0 1feel of each city; a grey blue for Eindhoven, pale green for Normandie, O.i.D and bright red for Berlin.

Over at Piet Zwart Institute (Master Interior Architecture & Retail Design) students focussed on presenting a visible or tangible soundscape through the presentation Instruments. While audio is something immaterial, students created products that integrated sound in new ways, creating alternative ‘sonic’ experiences for contemporary home life. The ‘sonic f.lux’ by Marco Busani and Natalie Konopelski combined lighting, water and speakers to create a beautiful hanging lamp which illustrated sounds through water ripples. As the light shines through the water, the ripples become visible not only through the water but also through the light itself (video below). A fun project was Obsessive Cleaners by Bianca Yousef and Kleoniki Fatiadou, a quintet of miniature cleaning machines which create a micro soundscape through repetitive friction (video below). Not Dutch, but definitely worth a mention is the group show by HEAD – Geneva University of Art and Design. Here, students had built an entire apartment complete with neon pink living room, mirrored bathroom and meeting circle. Walking around the various spaces required some skill as visitors were asked to climb ladders and fit through tiny doors. The experience itself however was refreshing as it reactivated the senses. By Cassandra Pizzey / 15-04-2014 A few years ago Ventura Lambrate was another ‘up-and-coming neighbourhood’, packed with disused warehouses, old garages and other vacant properties. Thanks to Margriet Vollenberg and Margot Konings of Organisation in Design, this area to the north of Lambrate train station is now firmly established as a Salone del Mobile creative hub. Ventura Lambrate became known as the spot where designers with smaller budgets were able to put on shows, an excellent spot for design schools to present themselves and the talents of tomorrow. Like last year, the Design Academy Eindhoven presented a scaleddown version of the 2013 graduation show Self-Unself at Lambretto Art Project or LAP. Some of the students’ most promising projects were on show this time, in an exhibition curated by Thomas Widdershoven and Jan Konings. A social theme could clearly be found in the graduation show and was translated to the show at LAP. Among the designs were Inge Kuipers Tea Set Touch, a tea set made for people with arthritis who have trouble pouring out tea from a normal pot. This one has no handle and doesn’t become too hot to touch, allowing the user to gently pour out tea with two hands. Every year at Milan, there are over 1,400 exhibitors. If each had an average of thirty products, that amounts to over 42,000 number of chairs, lights, sofas, desks and other pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories. So, for a long time, the challenge has been, how do you create something special – something innovative, unique, and perhaps even visionary? While there is much that is innovative at the fair itself, some of the more experimental work happens in other design districts. Ventura Lambrate is a wide-ranging series of exhibitions located in Milan’s Lambrate precinct. It began in 2009 when Dutch curators Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings teamed up with architect and entrepreneur Mariano Pichler to provide a new space for design talent during Milan Design Week. Growing each year in size and quality, this year Ventura Lambrate showed a lot of the best emerging and unknown talent, both Dutch and international. The strength of the work is due to the exhibition’s careful curation by Vollenberg and Konings, with strict judging criteria applied to each project. At Ventura Lambrate, Australian and New Zealand design was on show as part of The Other Hemisphere. For this exhibition, curator Sarah King of Supercyclers collaborated with Vollenberg and Konings to select products from 12 design practices following a call for entries.

And, while 170 can’t match the sheer size of the fair’s 1,400 exhibitors, if you want to see the future of design, and meet the stars of the fair in ten years’ time, Ventura Lambrate is probably your best bet.
