Arddangosfeydd Exhibitions

19 Medi / September— 04 Tachwedd / November 2015 Yn agor ddydd Gwener Opening Friday 18 Medi / September 6—8pm

Sickly Revelations* yw gosodiad newydd gan John Lawrence, enillydd Arddangosfa Agored Oriel Davies y llynedd. Mae’n canolbwyntio ar ddylanwad cynyddol profiad cyfryngol heddiw o'r byd — trwy ffilmiau, gemau a phlatfformau ar-lein — ac ein sefyllfa newidiol o fewn y diwylliant rhwydweithiol hwn. Mae Lawrence yn cwestiynu ein hymgysylltiad â'r ‘byd go iawn’, neu ein datgysylltiad oddi wrtho, a sut rydym yn gweld ein hunain a’n rolau newydd mewn byd y mae technoleg defnyddwyr wedi treiddio i mewn iddo. Mae delwedd symudol wrth wraidd y gosodiad hwn, yn ymgorffori cofnodion o flogiau fideo ar-lein hapgael o sefyllfa yn y cartref ac a gyflwynir gan adroddwr anweledig, ochr yn ochr â chipiadau digidol 3D lluniedig o wrthrychau penodol, a allai neu na allai ddeillio o’r pentyrrau wedi’u cronni yn y gofod hwn ar ffurf fflat. Mae ‘propiau’ o’r fideo yn cael eu lleoli yn yr oriel ynghyd â chyfres o bosteri sy’n cynnwys rhestr o ddatganiadau. Gan ddechrau gyda’r geiriau ‘Some people...’ ymddengys eu bod yn rhestru symptomau rhyw gyflwr cyfoes ac ar yr un pryd, yn cyfeirio at y cyffredinedd a geir mewn bywyd bob dydd.

Sickly Revelations* is a new installation by John Lawrence, last year’s Oriel Davies Open winner. It focuses on today's increasingly mediated experience of the world — through movies, gaming and online platforms — and our shifting position within this networked culture. Lawrence questions our engagement with, or detachment from, the 'real world' and how we perceive ourselves and our new roles within a system infiltrated by consumer technology. Moving image is at the centre of this installation, incorporating found, online video blog entries from a domestic setting and presented by an unseen narrator, alongside constructed 3D digital captures of specific objects, which may or may not originate from the hoarded piles of this apartment space. ‘Props’ from the video are positioned in the gallery along with a series of posters which feature a list of statements. Beginning with the words ‘Some people...’ they appear to list both the symptoms of some contemporary condition at the same time as referring to the banality found in everyday life. * Life is brittle // REAL John Lawrence lives and works in London. Of time and the railway Robert Davies

Arddangosfeydd Exhibitions

19—30 Medi / September 2015 Mae’r ffilm newydd hwn gan Robert Davies yn ymwneud â’r daith ar hyd y rheilffordd o Birmingham i Aberystwyth — prif linell hanfodol rhwng ardal ddiwydiannol Gorllewin Canolbarth Lloegr a Chanolbarth a Gorllewin Cymru. Mae’r daith, a ffilmiwyd o gaban gyrrwr y trên, wedi cael ei ffilmio’n wythnosol dros gyfnod o ddeuddeg mis, fel bod daearyddiaeth ddynol newidiol y dirwedd ddiwydiannol a ffermio yn cael ei hategu gan y newidiadau corfforol sy’n dod i’r amlwg dros y tymhorau. Mae’r ffilm ganlyniadol yn cyflwyno’r cyfnod hwn o amser yn ystod un diwrnod cyfan, fel y gall y gwylwyr ddechrau’r daith cyn iddi wawrio yn Birmingham a gorffen yn Aberystwyth wrth i’r haul ddechrau machlud.

This new film by Robert Davies concerns the rail line between Birmingham and Aberystwyth — a crucial artery between the industrial West Midlands and Mid and West Wales. The journey, filmed from the driver’s cab of the train, has been recorded weekly over a twelve month period so that the changing human geography of the industrial and farming landscape is complemented by the physical changes that emerge over the seasons. The resulting film presents this period of time within the course of a single day so that viewers can begin the journey before dawn in Birmingham and finish in Aberystwyth as the sun begins its descent. Robert Davies is an artist living near Aberystwyth. Of time and the railway will show at all main galleries along the train route to Birmingham.

Mae Robert Davies yn artist sydd yn byw ac yn gweithio ger Aberystwyth. Bydd Of time and the railway yn cael ei ddangos yn yr holl orielau mawr ar hyd y llinell drên i Birmingham.

A live dance installation with movement, dance, image and sound.

Gosodiad dawns byw gyda symudiad, dawns, delwedd a sain.

A dancer lies on the ground, looks at the sky and inhales the clouds. A spacewalking Apollo 9 astronaut describes his views of earth. Dice roll.

Mae dawnsiwr yn gorwedd ar y ddaear, yn edrych ar yr awyr ac yn mewnanadlu’r cymylau. Mae’r dis yn rholio. Mae gofodwr Apollo 9 yn disgrifio ei olygfeydd o’r ddaear. Mae cartref yn ffabrig, yn wehyddiad, yn arfer o wneud ac ail-wneud. Ar ôl treulio nifer o flynyddoedd yn mynd â’i hun a’i waith i fannau pell, mae gwaith Simon, Studies for Maynard, yn stopio i feddwl am beth gaiff ei leoli gartref wrth iddo ddal cromlin ehangach y ddaear. Mae Simon yn treulio cyfnod fel artist preswyl yn Oriel Davies am bythefnos. Mae’n trosglwyddo effemera ei stiwdio, ac yn datblygu cyfres o astudiaethau perfformio gyda’r artist sain Barnaby Oliver ac yn cynnwys ffilm gan Tanya Syed sy’n cyd-fynd â’i waith ei hun. Prosiect olaf Simon gydag Oriel Davies oedd y prosiect cofiadwy Louphole yn 2010. Home is a fabric, a weave, a practice of making and remaking. Having spent many years taking himself and his work to distant places, Simon’s Studies for Maynard pauses to think about what it is to be located at home whilst holding the wider curve of the earth. Simon is in residence at Oriel Davies for two weeks. He is transferring the ephemera of his studio, developing a series of performance studies with sound artist Barnaby Oliver and featuring a film by Tanya Syed that accompanies his own work. Simon’s last project with Oriel Davies was the memorable Louphole in 2010. He lives and works from Abercych, Pembrokeshire. ‘If we can sparkle he may land tonight’ Starman, David Bowie Check www.may-nard.org for specific event details.

HOUSE

Arddangosfeydd Exhibitions

The idea of house and home can conjure up feelings of warmth and shelter. A dwelling – be it cottage or shed, tent or mansion, temporary shack or permanent residence — is usually the basis of comfort and security. Conversely, a derelict or abandoned house is often associated with discomfort, unease and absence.

14 Tachwedd / November 2015 — 27 Ionawr / January 2016

This exhibition brings together six artists who use the domestic space and objects as a springboard for their ideas. Showing sculpture, installation, prints, drawings, painting and textiles, they explore the idea of ‘house’ in many and various guises. From Amy Sterly’s ‘speaking’ house prints to miniature staircases, meticulously carved from soap by Felicity Warbrick; from Jeanette Orrell’s exquisitely drawn brushes and wire whisks to Charlotte Squire’s exuberant lampshade installation; from Ainsley Hillard’s subtle suggestions of memory to Frances Carlile’s sculpture and prints, where house merges with landscape. Together they present House, an exhibition which explores the many meanings of home.

Gall y syniad o dyˆ a chartref greu teimladau o gynhesrwydd a chysgod. Fel arfer, annedd — boed hynny’n fwthyn neu’n sied, yn babell neu’n blasty, yn gaban dros dro neu’n breswyliad parhaol — yw’r sail arferol i gysur a diogelwch. I’r gwrthwyneb, mae tyˆ adfeiliedig neu dyˆ gwag yn gysylltiedig yn aml ag anesmwythder, anniddigrwydd ac absenoldeb. Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn dwyn ynghyd chwe artist sy’n defnyddio’r gofod a’r gwrthrychau yn y cartref fel man cychwyn ar gyfer eu syniadau. Maent yn dangos cerflunwaith, gosodiadau, printiau, lluniadau, paentiadau a thecstilau, ac yn archwilio’r syniad o ‘dyˆ ’ ar ffurfiau niferus a gwahanol. O brintiau tyˆ Amy Sterly sy’n ‘siarad’, i risiau bach, sydd wedi’u cerfio’n ofalus iawn o sebon gan Felicity Warbrick; o’r brwsys a’r chwisgiau gwifren wedi’u darlunio’n gain gan Jeanette Orrell, i osodiad lamplenni afieithus Charlotte Squire; o awgrymiadau cynnil Ainsley Hillard o gof, i gerflunwaith a phrintiau Frances Carlile, lle mae tyˆ yn uno â’r dirwedd. Gyda’i gilydd, maent yn cyflwyno House, arddangosfa sy’n archwilio ystyron niferus y cartref. Frances Carlile / Ainsley Hillard, Jeanette Orrell / Charlotte Squire Amy Sterly / Felicity Warbrick.

FOREIGNERS Bernadette Kerrigan TestBed 19 Medi / September — 04 Tachwedd / November 2015 Mae Bernadette Kerrigan yn arlunydd ond mae’r gwaith hwn yn arwain ei hymarfer i feysydd newydd. Mae Foreigners wedi esblygu o gyfres o brintiau unigryw graddfa fach a grëwyd o baent chwistrell, chwyn a thechneg sy’n deillio o ffotogramau. Mae’r broses a’r deunyddiau wedi cynnig ymagwedd reddfol, fwy rhydd i’r artist at ei pheintio. Gan ddefnyddio proses cyanotype arbrofol ar y polythen, mae Kerrigan yn creu arwyneb wedi'i orchuddio â dail a chwyn wedi gordyfu. Mae ansawdd tymhorol y polythen yn cyd-fynd â natur fyrhoedlog y pwnc — wrth i’r ddelwedd ddiflannu yn nirywiad graddol y polythen, cawn ein hatgoffa o fregusrwydd bywyd. Mae Bernadette Kerrigan yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Swydd Henffordd.

Bernadette Kerrigan Foreigners, 2015

Bernadette Kerrigan is a painter but this work takes her practice into new areas. Foreigners has evolved from a series of small-scale, unique prints created from spray paint, weeds and a technique derived from photograms. Both the process and materials have offered the artist an intuitive, freer approach to her painting. Using an experimental cyanotype process on polythene, Kerrigan presents a surface covered with overgrown foliage and weeds. The temporal quality of the polythene resonates with the ephemeral nature of the subject matter, its gradual degradation taking the image with it reminding us of the losses and fragility found in life. Bernadette Kerrigan lives and works in Herefordshire.

Talking to Gwen Anna Falcini TestBed 14 Tachwedd / November 2015 — 27 Ionawr / January 2016 Yn ystod cyfnod preswyl yn Aberystwyth, darganfu Anna Falcini lythyrau Gwen John yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Drwy ohebu â ffrindiau a theulu, datgelodd John yr agweddau personol, cyffredin o’i bywyd fel artist ym Mharis, yn ogystal â’r llawenydd a’r siomedigaethau. Ymateb Falcini i’r llythyrau, oedd archwilio nid yn unig eu cynnwys, ond eu materoldeb corfforol a’u cadwraeth archifol. Yr hyn sydd wedi dechrau dod i’r amlwg yw deialog bell, wedi’i gwahanu gan ganrif o amser, rhwng dwy artist fenywaidd. Mae Anna Falcini yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Swydd Henffordd.

During a residency in Aberystwyth, Anna Falcini discovered the letters of Gwen John at the National Library of Wales. Corresponding with friends and family, John revealed both the intimate, mundane aspects of her life as an artist in Paris, as well as the joys and disappointments. Falcini’s response to the letters, was to explore not only their content but the physical materiality and archival preservation of them. What has begun to emerge is a remote dialogue, separated by a century of time, between two female artists. Anna Falcini lives and works in Herefordshire.
