Mae storïau yn bodoli o fewn hyd oes pob gwrthrych, boed hynny ar ffurf stori ynghylch trysor teuluol, neu banel gwybodaeth wedi’i osod wrth ymyl arddangosyn amgueddfa. Yn fwy diweddar, mae adrodd storïau wedi cael ei addasu fel teclyn marchnata, i gyfeirio at draddodiad a dilysrwydd. Mae’r arddangosfa hon, sy’n croesawu teuluoedd, yn cymryd ymagwedd fwy cynnil o ran archwilio adrodd storïau drwy wrthrychau wedi’u saernïo. Artistiaid / Artists Åbäke, Auger-Loizeau, Carl Clerkin, Cecilie Gravesen, El Ultimo Grito, Zhenhan Hao, Hilda Hellström, Hefin Jones, Onkar Kular, Dash MacDonald, Noam Toran, Dawn Youll Stories exist within the lifespan of every object, whether in the form of a tale around a treasured heirloom or an information panel placed next to a museum exhibit. More recently, storytelling has been adapted as a marketing tool, to allude to tradition and authenticity. This family friendly exhibition takes a more subtle approach in exploring storytelling through crafted objects. The works present multiple ways in which fictional, humorous, cultural, political and historical references can be translated into crafted objects. Twelve artists, makers and designers, selected by guest curator Onkar Kular, tell stories through objects that they have made. This includes The Welsh Space Campaign by interdisciplinary designer Hefin Jones who proposes that Wales has the capacity to explore space. His work injects Welsh culture, skills and traditions into every item needed to establish a national space campaign. Every Saturday 11am—1pm & 2pm—3pm*, one of the exhibits, Play For A Handling Collection by Cecilie Gravesen will be animated by the Gallery Guide, so that visitors can handle the objects and participate in a choreographed handling session in the gallery. *Different times apply Saturday 29 July

The Kitchen yw gofod digwyddiadau a phrosiectau untro Oriel Davies ac mae’n cyflwyno rhaglen fywiog o weithdai, gweithgareddau, digwyddiadau a sgyrsiau ochr yn ochr â chyfleoedd gwych ar gyfer cydweithio ac ymyriadau cymunedol. A creative social space, where art, performance, craft and film will be made, shared and inspired. The Kitchen is Oriel Davies’ pop-up project and event space, presenting a vibrant programme of workshops, activities, events and talks alongside fantastic opportunities for collaboration and community intervention. The Kitchen is a room to relax and hang out in as well as a space for creativity. Designed as a flexible environment for a wide range of activity, The Kitchen will continuously adapt and change over the four months as visitors, artists and community groups create and share their work. Programme information will be available online from the end of September. Building on the achievements of The Drawing Room in year one, The Kitchen is the next edition of Open Space, a two-year pilot project that runs alongside, and in addition to, the Gallery's existing exhibition and learning programmes. Join The Kitchen Collective! A new group open to anyone interested in taking part and supporting The Kitchen. The Collective will help shape what takes place in the project space, support events and activities as well as be out there spreading the word. Wrth lansio’r cyntaf o ddwy sioe baentiadau, mae’r artist Louise Bristow, sy’n byw yn Brighton (cyd-enillydd Arddangosfa Agored Oriel Davies 2016), yn cyflwyno corff mawr o waith newydd a diweddar yn ei harddangosfa gyntaf yng Nghymru. Mae paentiadau manwl, hardd Louise yn cael eu creu mewn ymateb uniongyrchol i drefniadau modelau ac elfennau gludwaith, sy’n atgoffa rhywun o setiau llwyfan bychan, wedi’u rhoi at ei gilydd yn ei stiwdio. Mae cynnwys y rhain yn cael eu hysbrydoli gan adnoddau mawr yr artist o lyfrau, cylchgronau ac effemera printiedig, sydd wedi cael eu cronni dros amser o farchnadoedd rhad, a siopau elusennol yn y DU a thramor. Mae ei phaentiadau grymus a chyfareddol yn troelli amser a gofod, ac yn cyflwyno amgylcheddau gwahanol i’w harchwilio. Mae’r ystyr neu’r stori ymhob darn yn llac, ac yn cael eu darllen dro ar ôl tro yn ôl yr amgylchiadau.
Louise’s intimately beautiful paintings are created directly in response to arrangements of models and collage elements, reminiscent of miniature stage sets, assembled in her studio. The content of these are inspired by the artist’s large resource of books, magazines and printed ephemera, amassed over time from flea markets, charity shops in the UK and abroad. She also references her own photographs and intricate models she has crafted of buildings (or parts of buildings), kiosks and other three-dimensional forms. Each composition is developed through juxtaposing images and objects in an exploratory process, where initial ideas quickly evolve and shift in unknown directions. Her compelling and intriguing paintings twist time and space, presenting alternative environments for exploration. The meaning or story within each piece is loose, having multiple readings over time and according to circumstance.

Mae colourfelt yn dwyn ynghyd y pum corff o waith gan yr arlunydd o’r Swistir, Andreas Rüthi: cyd-enillydd Arddangosfa Agored Oriel Davies 2016. Mae Andreas, sydd yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Sir Fynwy, wedi arddangos ei baentiadau bywyd llonydd mewn dros ugain o arddangosfeydd unigol ar draws y byd. Mae Oriel Davies yn falch o gyflwyno colourfelt, ei sioe un person cyntaf yng Nghymru. Mae'r gwaith yn ymchwiliad cyson i’r posibiliadau newydd o fewn traddodiadau paentio: o liw a ffurf, i’r syniad o’r ‘tebygrwydd’ a’r syllu. Mae llawer o'i bwnc yn tarddu o gylchgronau, printiau, llyfrau a gwrthrychau hapgael, ac yn chwarae â natur atgynhyrchu ac ail-gyflwyno. Mae Field yn cael ei ddangos am y tro cyntaf, ac yn taflu lliwiau afreolus i’r oriel. Mae’r gwaith, sy’n cynnwys 64 o baentiadau sy’n portreadu bob atgynhyrchiad mewn arweinlyfr ar fadarch, yn dathlu pw ˆer rhithbeiriol lliw, tra’n cynrychioli’r potensial o fewn pob atgynhyrchiad. Arddangosfeydd Exhibitions
colourfelt brings together five bodies of work by Swiss-born painter Andreas Rüthi: joint prizewinner for Oriel Davies Open 2016. Andreas, who lives and works in Monmouthshire, has exhibited his still life paintings in over twenty solo exhibitions worldwide. Oriel Davies is delighted to present colourfelt, his first one-person show in Wales. The work is a constant investigation in new possibilities held within the traditions of painting: from colour and form to the notion of ‘likeness’ and the gaze. Much of his subject matter originates from magazines, prints, books and found objects and plays with the nature of reproduction and re-presentation. Showing for the first time and throwing the gallery into riotous colour is Field. Consisting of 64 paintings portraying every reproduction in a mushroom guidebook, the work celebrates the hallucinogenic power of colour, while representing the potential held within each reproduction. The title of the show colourfelt refers to both the experience of colour and the German word for field which is Feld, pronounced felt.

Building on the legacy of our previous initiatives — TestBed and In Focus — Litmus is a commissioning and development programme for early career artists based in Wales and the Welsh Borders to research, develop and present new work at Oriel Davies.

The Litmus programme launched in May with the opening of Katie Surridge’s exhibition Who lives in a hole like this? and following our second open call, we’re delighted to announce the development of a new commission by AJ Stockwell and the programme’s first residency artist, Neasa Terry.

AJ Stockwell, In Guise of the Rock, 2017
Fascinated by the slippage of materials through time and place, and our shared 'material' culture, AJ Stockwell will focus on an excerpt of her ambitious project White Rock, which draws on the legacy of the porcelain industry in Europe. Later in the year, Neasa Terry will be in residence to explore emergent strands of practice relating to recorded sound, the human body, mechanical reproduction and technology. Litmus is selected through open call and we’ll be announcing future call outs in Autumn 2017. Oriel Davies 2017 Open Writing Competition Both experienced and budding writers are invited to submit either poems (up to 50 lines each) or prose (up to 1000 words each) that focus on the theme of ‘water’. The winning entries (one for best prose and one for best poetry) will receive a £50 voucher to spend in the gallery shop. Works should be in either English or Welsh. Entry fee is £3 per piece submitted. This year’s judges are writer and poet Chris Kinsey and Sophie McKeand, award-winning poet and current Young People’s Laureate Wales.

We offer a wide variety of exciting and creative sessions and events for children and their families here at the gallery and out in the community. Family arts activities held during the school holidays allow parents and children to get creative in a fun and informal way. Working with a variety of different artists and craft makers, these workshops are a great opportunity to experiment with a range of art techniques, explore creativity and learn new skills.

Poetry 1 Wednesdays 04 October— 06 December 10.15am —12.30pm Lara Clough This course is for people who want to start writing poetry, or, who are doing so already, but consider themselves inexperienced. Through tutor presentations, group discussions and structured writing tasks, students will be given the opportunity to learn about the elements of poetic form and technique and begin to build a portfolio of their own work. They are encouraged to write between sessions and receive supportive feedback on their poems. Basic Sewing Monday 16 & 23 October 10am—3.30pm Jill Rolfe During this short course students will learn how a sewing machine operates, basic stitch and machine skills. In addition students will learn cutting skills, safety around machines, qualities of fabric and setting tension. All these vital skills will enable students to progress on to the popular Up-Cycled clothing course. You will need the use of your own sewing machine at home as the tutor will set you tasks to do between sessions. Sewing machines will be provided for class work.

Upcycled Clothing Mondays 13, 20, 27 November & 11 December, 10am—3.30pm Jill Rolfe This new course will up-lift the design of your wardrobe. A 'no tacking' course, just free sewing. With an eco aware slant, you will design articles of clothing you thought you would never be able to do. Start collecting garments from boot sales and charity shops to up-cycle. Students will work from a simple up-cycled bag through to an article of clothing and develop design skills along the way. Regard will be paid to the different types of fabric and their unique qualities. Students are required to work on projects between sessions so will need the use of a machine at home. Spaces are limited to 8. However, additional spaces are available if students can bring their own machine. Please state when booking, if you will be bringing a machine. On completing the course, students may be invited to present their articles for sale to an eco-fashion co-operative called Co-Create.
Drawn from Observation Tuesday 03, 17 October & 07, 21 November 10am—3.30pm Tereska Shepherd The quickest way to accelerate drawing skills is to learn to draw from observation. This module will teach you the art of looking. Topics will include perspective, composition, tonal drawing, chiaroscuro, the fixed measurement, negative spaces, mark-making and foreshortening. You will also be encouraged to evaluate your work through self-criticism. The aim is to give you the skills and practice to start a drawing but not necessarily producing finished works. You will work with biro, pencil, pen, brush, conté and charcoal.

Collaboration & Partnership Oriel Davies’ exhibitions and artists’ projects provide a diverse and inspiring resource for supporting learning across the curriculum. Our most successful projects with schools and colleges are developed in partnership with teachers and pupils. We particularly welcome approaches from teachers with an idea they’d like to pursue with us or who would like to explore how future teaching could benefit from using our exhibitions and artists’ skills to support their schemes of work in new and exciting ways. Such projects could combine exhibition visits, artist-led workshops, outreach activities at school or other sites and even opportunities to take part in exhibitions at the gallery.
