There are many places and settings where you can catch a dhow ride, from the commercial abras (ferryboats) used to ferry people across the Dubai Creek to the more touristic ones found at the waterways of modern souks and attractions. Abu Dhabi in 24 hours As the capital city of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is teeming with art and culture, but that’s not all… if you have landed here with 24 hours up your sleeve, this handy itinerary will help you experience the best the city has to offer – from dawn to dusk.

Morning

9am-10am: Souq Qaryat Al Beri Start the day by heading to Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri situated in al Maqta area of the city. Part of the hotel’s complex is Souk Qaryat Al Beri. As you make your way around the large hotel complex, the fascination heightens. The hotel is connected by a winding waterway featuring traditional boats, known as abras. You lie back, utterly relaxed, while the abra slowly meanders through verdant garden scenery. The boat drops you at the hotel's souk, a contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian market. Here, you’ll be surrounded by a wide array of restaurants and cafés – most of which offering stunning views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – as well as many shops and stalls selling everything from jewellery and accessories to clothes, perfumes, antiques, furniture and carpets. If you can’t decide at which café or restaurant to get your most important meal of the day, then you might want to try the ginger milk tea and a freshly baked butter bun at Papparoti, which has captivated audiences all around the country.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

10am-11:30am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Now that your stomach is sufficiently lined, it’s time to head out to what most people would name as Abu Dhabi’s most important landmark, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Known for its grandeur and majesty, the mosque was a dream in the heart of the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al

Nahyan, May God rest his Soul, where he established its general vision, set its foundation stone, and crowned thereby a journey full of fulfilled dreams and great achievements. Opened for worship in 2007, the mosque features four minarets and eighty-two domes, representing different Islamic styles. The mosque is also known for its diverse Islamic architecture and pure white colour. White marble clads the external walls and columns and features relief carving of verses from Holy Quran and Islamic ornamentation. Once you are done marvelling the grandeur of the mosque, you may walk to the taxi designated area in the north car park and hop into a cab to go to your next stop.

Home to an amazing mix of Ferrari-inspired rides and attractions and the biggest Ferrari Store in the region, this is a must-visit, but you probably need to come back here again with more time to spend, unless you don’t mind sparing AED350 on a ticket just to check the place out and maybe, if you’re lucky, get to find a few rides with queues that won’t burn the hours you have left of the day.

Located on the roof deck under the sensational light-filled canopy of the Yas Viceroy hotel, Skylite is the perfect place for indulging in cocktails and the rhythms of commercial house music. On the other hand, O1NE Yas Island features the world’s largest privately owned graffiti wall on the outside, while it’s inside space features an awesome a 360-degree 3D projection mapping on the walls that can transport guests from St.Tropez to outer space as they dance the night away. DUBAI in a Day

A day is nowhere near enough to discover the many delights of Dubai , but if that’s all the time you’ve got, this specially designed itinerary will help you make the most of every hour.

Morning

8am-9:30am: Breakfast at XVA Café Start your day at XVA Café. Located within XVA Art Hotel in Al Fahidi Neighbroood, this cosy courtyard cafe offers a range of Middle-Eastern-inspired breakfast options. Breakfast is served from 7am to 9am, so make sure you make it there on time.

9:30am-11am: Al Fahidi historical neighbourhood After fuelling up at XVA Café, leave the hotel for a stroll around the surrounding Al Fahidi neighbourhood. One of the oldest communities in Dubai, the neighbourhood has retained its traditional architecture and wind towers. However, the same can’t be said about its inhabitants; most of the buildings have been converted to art galleries, cafes, shops and government offices. If you’re eager for some information and history about the history of the locality, you can make a pit stop at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (House number 26) for answers and useful tips. If not, you can try Basta Art Café for a refreshing drink or Majlis Gallery for art.

11am-12pm: Dubai Museum While in the area, don’t miss the Dubai Museum. The museum is a reincarnation of what once was Al Fahidi Fort, a garrison built in 1787. Today, the museum displays archaeological finds and traditional artefacts as well as multimedia charting the city's progress through the decades.

Afternoon

12pm-2pm: Souk Madinat Jumeirah As the sun gets higher in the sky, you’re going to want to find some sheltre and while away the few more hours before lunchtime. Hail a cab and head to Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a unique shopping destination located in the heart of Madinat Jumeirah, one of Dubai’s most luxurious Arabianstyle resorts. The souk is re-creation of an ancient Arabian marketplace with a bazaar-like atmosphere. Here, you can explore a myriad of meandering pathways hosting numerous cafes, restaurants and bars, and shops selling a variety of traditional wares and souvenirs.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

2pm-3pm: Lunch at Al Qasr Hotel When you are ready for your second meal of the day, you can walk in for lunch at one of the various restaurants at the souk, or, for something a little more extravagant, make your way through the resort to Al Qasr Hotel, where the hotel’s picturesque seafood restaurant Pierchic sits at the end of its own pier, offering an over-the-water dining experience unmatched anywhere in Dubai. Open for lunch and dinner, Pierchic features à la carte menus of classics including oysters, scallops, sashimi and lobster, as well as an array of fresh fish. Souk Madinat Jumeirah

Afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab Image Courtesy of Jumeirah.com

3pm-4pm: Afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab No trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to Burj Al Arab, Dubai’s most iconic hotel. Yet for all the wonder this stunning structure provides when you finally see it in person, it’s all the more extraordinary on the inside. Repeatedly voted the world's most luxurious hotel, getting past the front gate of Burj Al Arab isn’t an easy task. Unless you are staying at the hotel or have a reservations at one of its opulent restaurants, your easiest ticket in is a reservation to the Afternoon Tea (for AED 560 per person) at the hotel’s atrium restaurant, Sahn Eddar, where you can indulge in sweet and savoury afternoon tea menus of very best in the world.

4pm-6:00pm: Burj Khalifa & Dubai Mall Once you are done savouring your afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab, it’s time for you to see Dubai’s other iconic and world-famous structure, the Burj Khalifa. Hard to miss from almost anywhere in Dubai due to its sheer height, Burj Khalifa is perhaps best admired from its base in Downtown Dubai. From here, you’re also footsteps away from The Dubai Mall, the largest and most-visited mall in the world, combining world-class shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure attractions. With over 1,200 retail outlets, it’s easy to lose track of time – and yourself. If shopping is not your on list (although it should, amid this unparalleled retail mix), there’s still plenty for you to see and do at The Dubai Mall. First there’s the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, containing thousands of aquatic animals, and then there’s the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink. And for those after great views of city, a flight to one of Burj Khalifa’s observation decks ‘At The Top’ and ‘At The Top SKY’ (located on the 124th floor and 138 floor respectively) is not to be missed. You’ll be taking with you a fuller appreciation of this architectural wonder and a deeper understanding of Dubai’s remarkable vision.

It performs daily, with performance repertoire including Sama Dubai; Baba Yetu, an award-winning song in Swahili; the Arab world’s top-selling dance number Shik Shak Shok; and the signature piece of world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, Con te partiro (Time to Say Goodbye). Performances are 30 minutes apart (from 6pm to 11pm).

6pm-9pm: Souk Al Bahar Only after catching one of fountain’s performances should you proceed across the footbridge over Burj Khalifa Lake. The bridge will lead to Souk Al Bahar (‘market of the sailor’), another arabesque shopping destination reminiscent of old bazars in the Middle East. Here, again, you are left with choice of casual dining at the souk’s restaurants or the fine dining options at The Palace Downtown Dubai hotel, located next to the souk and connected to it through different pathways. If the latter is your choice, Ewaan restaurant at The Palace will whisk you away with a tempting blend of Arabic and Oriental specialities, shisha and live music on the terrace. Other dining options include Thai cuisine at Thiptara and Argentinian grills at Asado.

11pm-2am: Armani/Privé If you are still standing and got what it takes to party the night away, the best spot close to you for that is Armani/ Privé, one of Dubai’s trendiest after-hours destinations for vibrant DJ beats and fast-paced fun. City of the Future… Today As one of the world’s most sustainable cities, Masdar City makes the world’s ‘Green Cities’ a reality – a must-see attraction for the green tourist.

progressive urban planning and eye-catching architecture that combines traditional design principles with leadingedge technology. One of these innovative design elements is a huge central wind tunnel that channels a cooling breeze through the streets and alleys, making it comfortable to

A city within a city, Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s ‘greenprint’ of a city of the future – a community where people live, work, play and learn in an environment that pushes the boundaries of sustainable design, construction and operation. As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice its

stroll around even during high summer temperatures. Masdar City is walkable and pedestrian friendly, integrating a smart network of transportation options to create an accessible, liveable community. Travelling into the City can be done by different methods of low-carbon transportation. One of them is the super cool and emission-free Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) pods – small driverless electric cars. Admission is free to the public who wish to explore Masdar City. There is parking available in the covered car park at the PRT station. From there, you can access the City via the PRT cars that will take you directly into the heart of the City. Whether you just want to wander the streets and marvel at the unique architecture, relax at one of the many restaurants and coffee shops, or browse a convenience store or the organic food shop, there is plenty to do and see. Here are some of the things to discover in this futuristic city…

Traditional Design As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice that it looks both extremely modern and traditional. That’s because the City incorporates many passive design features that don't require energy to deliver benefits. These features have been used by urban dwellers in the region for millennia. Some of these techniques are obvious, such as the window shading, narrow spaces between buildings and colonnades. Others are less so, such as the northwest-southeast orientation of the City’s streets, which optimises shading of streets via building walls, and facilitates natural airflow throughout the City.

Personal Rapid Transit (PRT)

Green Building Materials

The on-demand Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system of electric-powered, automated, single-cabin driverless vehicles which can seat up to 4 people, offers the privacy, comfort and non-stop travel of a taxi service, and the sustainability of a shared public transport system. Operated using a touch screen that sets the PRT in motion to your disembarkation point, the vehicles run along PRT-only corridors. These passenger cars run on a 1,700-metre track that passes from the parking garage PRT station to the Masdar Institute PRT station. The cars are controlled by computer and use sensors to ensure nothing is in their path and to locate magnets that have been embedded in the concrete floor every two metres to help the vehicles navigate. An overhead leaky coaxial cable antenna runs the length of the PRT corridors and provides a wireless link between the individual cars and the PRT system computer.

As you rest on any of the benches across the City, note that like other concrete used in the City these are made from ‘low-carbon’ concrete. This concrete has a significantly lower environmental footprint because up to 40% of the energy-intensive Portland cement is replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), a waste product of iron making. The use of this slag has resulted in concrete that is more resilient against moisture and Abu Dhabi’s hypersaline soil. Most of the aluminium used across Masdar City for sheeting, windows and door frames, comprises 90% recycled aluminium, a product that has one-eighth the carbon footprint of conventional virgin aluminium sheeting. The use of this 90% recycled aluminium is a regional first in the construction industry. All timber is certified as sustainably sourced, while steel reinforcing bars are made with recycled scrap. And what makes the City more eco-friendly, is its heavily reduced need for energy produced by fossil fuels, thus doing a good job in climate action. A purpose-built 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant and an array of building-mounted solar panels offset part of the electricity needs in the current phase of Masdar City.

The PRT Station The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) Station marks the beginning of the Masdar City experience for most visitors. The floors are constructed with prefabricated concrete slabs that are manufactured offsite and fitted together on site, dramatically reducing construction waste. Benches are made of polished low-carbon concrete. Backlit recycled-glass walls accent the PRT station entrance. Inside, the eye-catching glass-walled numeration of the PRT berths and multiple smaller international numbers are embedded into the single large Arabic numeral. The parking berths have recharging panels in the floor, allowing vehicles to recharge while standing in the station.

Students Residential Buildings Masdar Institute’s residential buildings are defined by the terracotta-coloured, undulating glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) balcony ‘screens’ that serve much the same role as traditional Arabic mashrabiya screens. They provide shade and privacy, while allowing air to pass through to cool the balconies. Inside, these buildings have a central enclosed atrium that naturally ventilates the common space for much of the year. During the evening, cool air flows from vents opened on the ground level, cooling the interior walls and flowing out through open louvers at the top of the buildings.

48

Issue 2016 tor Building slopes outward as it rises in an effect that reduces solar gain by up to 63%. The use of ‘fritting’ on the glass walls also keeps heat at bay yet still promotes diffused natural lighting inside. Some exterior windows can be manually opened to provide natural ventilation of fresh air in cooler weather to significantly reduce cooling requirements. The design of walkways into the building’s open-air interior courtyard helps to ‘lock in’ the cooler shaded air. Different coloured fritting has been applied to different sections on the facade. Higher up the building, the dots are bright yellow and reflective, while ‘cooler’ colours are used towards the building’s base.

In warm weather, these openings are closed during the day to keep cool air in. Walls cooled by the night air then provide thermal cooling to keep the interior hallways pleasant throughout the day.

Knowledge Centre One of the most distinctively shaped buildings in the City, the oval-shaped roof of the institute’s Knowledge Centre reflects the designers’ efforts to optimise photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting through the building orientation and the inclination of the PV panels on the roof’s curved surface. The roof’s large self-shading overhang prevents direct sunlight from causing heat gain inside, while still allowing natural light to illuminate study areas and providing a full wall of glass that will look out over one of the City’s parks. Although the glulam (glued laminated) timber structure is graceful and beautiful, the reason it was chosen over steel was because sustainable timber reduces the building’s embodied carbon footprint. Covering the northeast section of the building’s exterior roof, sustainable folded zinc cladding provides ventilated shading to parts of the building and nearby public spaces.

Multi-use Hall This sports building and performance hall features an open-air swimming pool. Above the pool is an indoor gym and a large multipurpose hall that is used for conferences and sporting events. Ensuring accessible leisure and recreational opportunities for workers, residents and visitors to Masdar City is central to the sustainability objective of creating a viable work-life balance. That’s why streets and public squares are intentionally designed to encourage sitting, whether for a work or informal meeting, to read or simply enjoy the weather. Cafes and restaurants benefit from the City’s pleasant micro-climate, while future development includes more open space such as parks, playgrounds and sports fields. The unusual design choice of putting a building above an outdoor swimming pool optimises land use and provides necessary shading to the pool.

Masdar Wind Tower Rising 45 metres above the plaza in which it stands, the Masdar Wind Tower is a modern interpretation of one of the region’s most iconic traditional architectural features. Its height allows it to capture upper-level winds and direct them to the open-air public square at its base. Sensors at the top of the steel structure operate louvers to open in the direction of prevailing winds and to close in other directions to divert wind down the tower. A PTFE (Teflon) fabric membrane carries the wind downward, while mist generators at the top further cool the air. This combination of evaporative cooling and air movement helps to lower the perceived temperature in the courtyard.

IRENA HQ The seven-storey, 32,000 square-metre complex comprises an atrium surrounded by three buildings and is home to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters. The complex has a 1,000 square-metre rooftop solar PV array that will meet 10% of the building’s electricity requirement. The office building, the first in Abu Dhabi to earn a 4 Pearl Estidama construction rating, reduces overall energy demand by more than 60% compared to a baseline non-Estidama building in Abu Dhabi. It also uses 54% less water than a comparable structure, and 75% of its hot water demand is heated on site with solar heaters. The complex was constructed with advanced sustainable building materials, such as low-carbon concrete, recycled aluminium and steel, and FSC-certified timber. Melius restaurant, located on the ground floor, offers mouth-watering cuisine ranging from Arabic, Italian, Asian and other international dishes.

Siemens Middle East HQ The Siemens Building is a LEED Platinum certified, high-performance office building, whose unmistakable exterior façade has been designed on the concept of a ‘box within a box’. The inner ‘box’ is the highly insulated, airtight wall that provides maximum insulation. Surrounding this is the ‘outer’ box comprising a lightweight aluminium external shading system featuring fins of varying forms. These prevent excess solar heat from reaching the inner ‘box’ and warming the building’s interiors, while maximising views and daylight. The building, which is the company’s Middle East headquarters, ‘floats’ above and shades a public plaza, whose funnel shape accelerates prevailing winds underneath the building. This flushes hot air out of the surrounding public spaces using natural air-flow dynamics. The atriums draw up the warm ground-level air from the building’s plaza and expel it and allow natural daylight to permeate the interior office spaces. Smart metering systems are deployed to monitor energy and water use.

Digital Guestbook The Masdar digital guestbook is an engaging and interactive souvenir of your visit to Masdar City. Created by American artist Joshua Davis, the guestbook invites you to sign your name on the screen. Based on each signature, the guestbook software uses randomisation to create a unique, computer-generated art form that evokes a schematic urban planning map. The slower, more carefully you sign your name, the better the resulting artwork. So be sure to take your time. Once the design is created, the guestbook will send a copy to your email.

Beaches As the UAE is a seaside country, it’s obvious that one of its strong points is an ample supply of beaches. But while there is an open beach almost everywhere you look along the cost, you run the risk of landing on one with no lifeguard on duty. Moreover, some of these undesignated beaches lack facilities such as showers, toilets and refreshment stalls. That is why you’ll be better off going to one of the more populated beaches which have evolved to become friendlier to their frequenters. If you plan to hit the turquoise waters on your visit to the UAE, here are a few beaches you should consider:

Capital Garden Located on Khalifa Street in Abu Dhabi, this 5.6-hectare park is a green oasis in the middle of the city. Each little garden cove has a small selection of climbing frames, swings, slides and beautiful fountains. Vending machines and an enclosed cafeteria provide refreshments.

Corniche Park Stretching along the Abu Dhabi coast this 50-hectare waterfront park is dotted with small restaurants, play areas and bicycle rental stations.

Magnificent ARCHITECTOUR

15 Must-see Blockbuster Buildings and Skyscrapers

It goes without saying that the United Arab Emirates is home to some of the most magnificent buildings in the world, each a feat of architectural ingenuity. This drive to construct superstructures has turned the UAE into an architectural wonderland with some of the most dramatic skylines in the world. Some of the architectural wonders on this list are obvious choices, while other lesser-known structures had to be carefully selected out of many qualifying buildings.

Burj Khalifa Topping the list is none other than Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world and Dubai's infamous urban masterpiece at over 828 metres and more than 160 floors. While Burj Khalifa is superlative in every respect, it is the unique design of Burj Khalifa that truly sets it apart. Like petals from a stem, the tower's wings extend from its central core, which emerges at the top and culminates in a sculpted spire.

Burj Al Arab Completed in 1999, the distinctive sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel is one of the buildings that helped shape Dubai. Resting on an artificial island 280 m offshore and connected to the mainland by a bridge, the iconic structure required complex engineering feats to achieve. Inside the building, the atrium is 180 m tall, making the hotel’s lobby one of the biggest in the world.

Cayan Tower Developed by Cayan Real Estate Investment and Development, Cayan Tower is a 306-metres, 73-story skyscraper located in the Dubai Marina area. The tower is designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) architectural group, the same group who did the concept design for Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Upon its inauguration on 10 June 2013, the tower has become world's tallest high rise building with a twist of 90 degrees.

Almas Tower Home to Dubai’s diamond exchange, Almas Tower is a sparkling example of innovative design. Located in Jumeirah Lake Towers, and rising 360 m in height, Almas Tower was the tallest building in the Middle East when it was completed in 2008, up until it was surpassed by Burj Khalifa in 2010. Almas Tower was designed to meet a particularly challenging brief. It had to be the tallest tower in Dubai, but was also restricted in floor area. The obvious way to meet these requirements is to taper the building as it rises, but the tower’s designers sought a more aesthetically interesting solution than a simple cone. The result is a supremely elegant form, created by intersecting two elliptical towers of different heights, producing a composition that changes subtly as one circles the building.

Capital Gate Owned and developed by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company), Capital Gate building is designed with a striking lean: 18° westwards. At 160 m (35 floor), it is also one of the tallest buildings in Abu Dhabi. Guinness World Records certified Capital Gate as the ‘World’s furthest leaning man-made tower.’ The tower accommodates exclusive office spaces as well as the 5 Star ‘Hyatt Capital Gate’ hotel.

Dusit Thani Dubai 37 stories high, this Dusit Thani hotel development stands out as a striking skyscraper on Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road. The most notable aspect of the tower is that its structure is divided into two bases which join at the top.

Iris Bay At 170 metres, Iris Bay is a one-of-a-kind structure located in Dubai’s Business Bay area. The tower is designed in the shape of an ovoid and comprises two identical double curved pixelated shells which are rotated and cantilevered over the podium. The rear elevation is a continuous vertical curve punctuated by balconies while the front elevation is made up of seven zones of rotated glass. The tower is also claimed to incorporate both passive and active environmental features. This includes naturally ventilated spaces and integrated solar energy and shading films in

O-14 Building O-14 stands at the heart of Business Bay, Dubai. The tower is surrounded by a concrete shell which creates a lace-like façade with openings to allow views, sun exposure and luminosity. A space nearly one meter deep between the shell and the main enclosure creates a so-called ‘chimney effect,’ a phenomenon whereby hot air has room to rise effectively cooling the surface of the building behind the perforated shell. This passive solar technique essentially contributes to a natural component to the cooling system for O-14, thus reducing energy consumption and costs.

INTO THE ART-MOSPHERE The art scene in Dubai and its bordering emirates is undeniably diverse, with a lot to offer the artistic mind. Besides cultivating local artistic talent, it attracts some of the best established international names, who come here to perform or exhibit. Whether you’re looking for an intriguing exhibition or an inspiring live performance, you’ll be enthused by the cultural offerings found here.

DIFC Gate Village

Art Districts

(www.alserkalavenue.‌ae) is the most significant hub in the area. The complex has a youthful kind of energy, and is home to twenty – and growing – creative organizations that cultivate Dubai's arts scene.

With few exceptions, most art galleries are conveniently concentrated in small areas that have come to be recognized as ‘art districts’. In these art districts inspiration abounds on every corner. The best way to explorer these areas is to get lost in them.

DIFC Gate Village, Dubai A global financial hub, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is where the biggest financial institutions base their offices in Dubai. With Dubai’s financial sharks working here, the centre has attracted some of the finest retail outlets and restaurants to set up shop here. The district also attracted several exclusive art galleries, which brought about a host of art and culture events that keep the district pulsating night and day.

Al Quoz, Dubai One of Dubai’s industrial zones, Al Quoz locality is dominated by cement factories, labour camps and auto repair shops. Surprisingly, however, it is here where Dubai’s contemporary art scene has taken root and blossomed. The area is now best known for its many art galleries, housed in warehouse spaces. shops. Together with two other sites, The Heart of Sharjah (www.‌heartofsharjah.ae) and Al Qasba (www.alqasba.ae), the mosaic of Sharjah’s art scene comes together, forming a beautiful picture that embodies the artistic vision of the emirate.

Situated in Bur Dubai, Al Fahidi is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in the city. Rich with historic and cultural attractions, the laidback neighbourhood has gained great importance as a cultural centre – a natural place for art institutions to exist. The neighbourhood is also home to SIKKA Art Fair (www.sikka.ae), the annual initiative by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority to support and showcase Emirati and Dubai-based artistic talent.

Saadiyat Cultural District, Abu Dhabi With the Louvre Abu Dhabi (www.louvreabudhabi.‌ae) nearing it opening day and Manarat Al Saadiyat pulsating with a wide-ranging series of art programmes, the Saadiyat Cultural District (www.saadiyatculturaldistrict.ae) on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi is becoming a major hub for the art and culture scene in the capital. And as the realization of the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Musuem, the Maritime Museum and the Preforming Arts Centre nears, this art and culture hub will soon be globally unprecedented in terms of scale and scope.

The Art Area & Heart of Sharjah, Sharjah Located in the heart of Sharjah, The Art Area or Al Shuwaihiyeen area is one of the most prominent cultural areas in Sharjah. Chosen for its historical and cultural significance, The Art Area grew over time into a vibrant centre for the arts. Many arts and cultural institutions are based here, playing host to regular exhibitions, seminars and work-

A Place to Call Home Life in the United Arab Emirates appeals to you? You aren not alone! Living in the UAE is the dream of many visitors who are captivated by the breath-taking coastlines, vibrant cities, multicultural society, abundant opportunity and exemplary governing of this prosperous country.

the service sector, with the remainder being in construction, natural resources and other sectors. While foreign workers are actively sought to grow the national workforce, the graduate labour market remains competitive, so to ensure success in your job search you will need to make sure that you have the right combination of skills and experience. In order to work in the UAE and have a residency permit, you need to secure the relevant sponsorship from the

Employment opportunities The UAE has a diverse economy and a high standard of living, making it by far the first choice for many professionals who want to work abroad. The job market is similar to that in other developed countries, and many of the world’s leading companies have established themselves here, most notably in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The majority of jobs are in

hiring company. This is done by filing your employment contract with the hiring company to the Ministry of Labour or the relevant free zone authority if the company you will be working at is registered in a free zone. In most cases, a bank account and a health insurance policy is required. Expatriate residents may sponsor family members of first degree (wife or children under 18) for a non-employment residency permit. However, the sponsor has to fulfil certain requirements in terms of position at workplace, monthly income and other rules in this regard. For more information on residency sponsorships, visit the official portal of UAE Government (www.government.ae).

or personal tax and no need for a local partner. Investors looking to start a business in the UAE can seek assistance and detailed guidance from business start-up companies, law firms or from the Chamber of Commerce or business councils in the emirates.

Starting a business The UAE encourages growth of private businesses and supports their existence through its business-friendly policies. The Department of Economic Development in the Ministry of Economy issues licences and regulates all private businesses in the UAE. Depending on the legal form of your company, you and your business partners may need to file a Memorandum of Association. In some cases, you will have to enter into a Local Service Agent or Partnership agreement with a UAE national, who will represent your business with regards to licencing and compliance. The government has also established several specialized free zones that offer investors several benefits such as 100% ownership of the enterprise, 100% repatriation of capital and profits, no minimum capital investment, no corporate

Finding a home Renting a home One of the first things to consider when moving to the UAE is finding a home. The process of finding a flat or house will vary. In larger cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the housing market can be quite competitive, making it relatively difficult to find affordable housing. As in many countries, the cost of rent in the UAE depends on the location and size of the accommodation. Dubai has the highest rates in the country, with mostly unfurnished housing. In order to get your rent contract registered with the concerned authorities , you will be asked to provide proof of

dents need to obtain training from driving schools in the UAE and pass the test/s conducted by the respective local government's traffic regulatory entity. Some expatriate residents with driving licence obtained from their home country are eligible for driving licence adjustment in the UAE, for which they might be required to take a theory or a practical test.

Buying a home

Renting a car

Expats and foreign investors can purchase freehold property within selected projects and areas in the UAE. Rules for purchasing property differ from emirates to emirate. In addition to the price paid for the property itself, you will also have to pay a one-time registration fee in addition to an annual community fee that covers building maintenance, renovation and other costs. Many local banks and financial establishments offer home loans and financing solutions to residents interesting in buying a property in the UAE. As in many other countries, real estate agents in the UAE assist individuals in locating and purchasing houses or flats. There are real estate agents that specialise in specific areas, cities or types of housing. The website (www.propertyfinder.com) is a good starting point for finding a home. On it you can browse homes for sale or rent throughout the country and get an idea on the prices and different areas.

Although there are many car rental companies in the UAE, renting a car is still considered a costly affair. Renting can be a sensible choice for the first few months while you familiarise yourself with the road network and driving styles in the UAE. Most of the car rental companies in the UAE are reliable and offer quality vehicles. Monthly car rental for a relatively new small car ranges between AED1500-2500 per month.

Buying a car With a host of new and used (pre-owned) car dealerships in the UAE, buying a car is a very simple matter. In order to buy a car, the buyer must have a residence visa and a valid UAE driving license. When buying new a car from an authorized dealer, buyers can expect service and maintenance packages, warranty, insurance and help with financing and registration. However, it is not the same when buying a used car from an individual seller or unauthorized car showrooms, and one should be diligent in checking if the car is in good condition by having the car tested before purchasing it. All cars, new or used, must be insured before being registered. There are several international and local insurance companies offering different vehicle insurance pack-

ages. By law, third party liability coverage is the minimum category of car insurance necessary for all vehicles driven in the UAE. It is also important to purchase a Salik tag and attach it to your vehicle if you will be driving in or through Dubai. Salik, meaning open or clear, is Dubai’s road toll collection system which operates without toll booths, barriers or gates, allowing traffic to move freely through tolling points on primary roads.

Sending your children to school The UAE education system offers comprehensive education for students of all ages across many different curriculums, including the English National Curriculum, GCSE, A’level, International Baccalaureate System, as well as British, American, Australian, French and Indian curriculums. This has proved to be very convenient for expat as well as national students interested in pursuing an international degrees in the UAE. Moreover, by establishing state-of-the-art educational districts, such as Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai International Academic City and University City of Sharjah, the UAE has attracted some of the best international universities and higher education institutes to establish campuses here, with courses ranging across different disciplines. Requirements for admission and fees vary depending on the school and the program. In general, the cost of private education in the UAE remains considerably high when compared to other countries so make sure you plan ahead and take school fees into account if you are moving to the UAE with your children.

Bringing your things There are many home relocation and moving companies that offer comprehensive solutions to all relocation needs. When you are ready to move your belongings, make sure to find a reputable relocation company with branches in both countries. And remember – even if you come with no furniture, there are many furniture stores that suit every budget in the UAE.

Relocating Pets If you decide to move to the UAE with your pet, there are specialist pet relocation companies to assist you making the transition as smooth as possible. You can find a list of international shipping companies that specialize in the relo-
