The true character of Dubai lies in its effortless blending of the old with the new. The traditional dhow (wooden sail boat) is a perfect example. A celebrated ancient mode of marine transportation in the UAE, the dhow is one of today’s most popular tourist attractions to study the many facets of the city while gliding gently along its picturesque waterways. There are many places and settings where you can catch a dhow ride, from the commercial abras (ferryboats) used to ferry people across the Dubai Creek to the more touristic ones found at the waterways of modern souks and attractions. If it’s more than just a cruise you seek, Al Boom Tourist Village (www.alboomtouristvillage.ae) offers culinary cruises aboard a range of large traditional dhows, on which you can indulge yourself in a tasty open buffet while cruising gracefully along the Dubai Creek.

GROUND BOUND Hop-on, Hop-off Bus Tours
Hop-on Hop-off bus tours are created around thoughtfully designed routes that take you to key places of interest. You can hop on and off as many times as you wish to explore places of interest. Big Bus Tours (www.bigbustours.com) is the only open-top tours bus in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While Big Bus also has a panoramic tour of Sharjah, the emirate has a dedicated open-top bus operated by the world’s leading open-top bus tour operator, City Sightseeing (www.citysightseeing.ae).
On Foot
Though the the cities in the UAE aren't made for walking, some neighbourhoods are best explored on foot. During a walking tour of these localities, you can discover hidden gems, survey traditional architecture and interact with the locals. One option is to do this on your own but if you feel like you could use some guidance, then you can always do your walking tour with the help of tour guide. Arabian Adventures (www.arabian‑adventures.com) offers private walking tours around historic areas of Dubai. On this afternoon tour you will visit a local mosque, walk through Heritage House, stroll through the Old Souq, cross the Dubai Creek by abra (ferryboat) and explore the picturesque streets, galleries and quirky shops of the Historical District. The 90-minute tour includes a walk through Al Bastakiya neighbourhood in Al Fahidi Historic District and a visit to the Diwan Mosque. Guests then return to the centre for a cultural discovery Q&A session, a cup of tea or coffee and dates. Tours are held every Saturday 9am - 10:30am.

Trolley Car
There's something romantic about hopping onto tram. The Dubai Trolley (www.emaar.com) provides that very experience and more as it whisks through the lively Downtown Dubai, passing by major landmarks and attractions such as Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall, Souq Al Bahar and several iconic hotels. The double-decker tram, resplendent in bright red with aesthetic gold pin-stripes, can carry 50 passengers, who can choose between open-deck or air-conditioned seating or conveniently hop on and hop off at locations of their choice, providing a wonderful and easy way to discover the top landmarks within the locality.

Abu Dhabi in 24 hours As the capital city of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is teeming with art and culture, but that’s not all… if you have landed here with 24 hours up your sleeve, this handy itinerary will help you experience the best the city has to offer – from dawn to dusk.
Morning
9am-10am: Souq Qaryat Al Beri Start the day by heading to Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri situated in al Maqta area of the city. Part of the hotel’s complex is Souk Qaryat Al Beri. As you make your way around the large hotel complex, the fascination heightens. The hotel is connected by a winding waterway featuring traditional boats, known as abras. You lie back, utterly relaxed, while the abra slowly meanders through verdant garden scenery. The boat drops you at the hotel's souk, a contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian market. Here, you’ll be surrounded by a wide array of restaurants and cafés – most of which offering stunning views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – as well as many shops and stalls selling everything from jewellery and accessories to clothes, perfumes, antiques, furniture and carpets. If you can’t decide at which café or restaurant to get your most important meal of the day, then you might want to try the ginger milk tea and a freshly baked butter bun at Papparoti, which has captivated audiences all around the country.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
10am-11:30am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Now that your stomach is sufficiently lined, it’s time to head out to what most people would name as Abu Dhabi’s most important landmark, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Known for its grandeur and majesty, the mosque was a dream in the heart of the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al

Nahyan, May God rest his Soul, where he established its general vision, set its foundation stone, and crowned thereby a journey full of fulfilled dreams and great achievements. Opened for worship in 2007, the mosque features four minarets and eighty-two domes, representing different Islamic styles. The mosque is also known for its diverse Islamic architecture and pure white colour. White marble clads the external walls and columns and features relief carving of verses from Holy Quran and Islamic ornamentation. Once you are done marvelling the grandeur of the mosque, you may walk to the taxi designated area in the north car park and hop into a cab to go to your next stop.

12pm- 1:30pm: Etihad Towers With five stunning towers that sparkle iridescently in the never-ending sunshine, Etihad Towers is a reflection of Abu Dhabi's modernity and regalness. Why should you visit you might ask? The answer is to observe, not just the sparkly towers but the entirety of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape from the Observation Deck at 300, located on the 74th floor of Tower 2 at the Etihad Towers complex. Entrance for visitors is AED75 (US$ 20.5), with AED 50 (US$ 13.6) redeemable as food and beverage vouchers at the venue. Now that you've worked up an appetite, it’s time for lunch. At Etihad Towers there are 12 exquisite restaurants, bars and lounges offering food from around the world, including French, Japanese and contemporary Lebanese. What more is there to say but bon appétit?! However, if you want to try some local dishes, then you just might want to hold off your hunger until you get to Emirates Place, located just across the road from Etihad Towers.
1:30pm-3pm: Emirates Palace A site to behold, Emirates Palace is the essence of palatial yet traditional Arabic architecture and truly one of the most inspiring hotels in Abu Dhabi. Built as a landmark showcasing Arabian culture, the ultra-luxurious hotel features a stunning main lobby with expansive marble floor and a large patterned dome above, picked out in gold. The hotel also offers a number of world class restaurants. Among them is Mezlai, a top choice for Emirati dining in Abu Dhabi. Mezlai is an Arabic word meaning ‘the old lock of the door’, befitting the classic ambient Arab décor that surrounds you as you recline and dine in luxurious comfort. According to many within the top echelons of the city’s business community, Mezlai is the best Arabic restaurant in Abu Dhabi, serving a variety of beautifully-cooked and elegantly-presented local dishes that are made with the finest fresh ingredients.
Etihad Towers Observation Deck
3pm-5pm: Heritage Village Having fed your body, it’s time to feed your soul, and there’s no better place for some culture in Abu Dhabi than Heritage Village. Run by the Emirates Heritage Club, the village is an open museum that depicts a traditional Emirati village, providing visitors with an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. You will find it on the Corniche Breakwater at close proximity to Emirates Palace. If the weather is good, you can walk along the Corniche past the Marina Mall to get there. Traditional aspects of the desert way of life, including a campfire with coffee pots, tents made of goat hair, and a falaj irrigation system, are attractively displayed in the open museum, while the little spice shop on site is a treat – you can get a range of dried herbs, handmade soap and plenty of chatter.

Travelling into the City can be done by different methods of low-carbon transportation. One of them is the super cool and emission-free Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) pods – small driverless electric cars. Admission is free to the public who wish to explore Masdar City. There is parking available in the covered car park at the PRT station. From there, you can access the City via the PRT cars that will take you directly into the heart of the City. Whether you just want to wander the streets and marvel at the unique architecture, relax at one of the many restaurants and coffee shops, or browse a convenience store or the organic food shop, there is plenty to do and see. Here are some of the things to discover in this futuristic city…
Traditional Design As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice that it looks both extremely modern and traditional. That’s because the City incorporates many passive design features that don't require energy to deliver benefits. These features have been used by urban dwellers in the region for millennia. Some of these techniques are obvious, such as the window shading, narrow spaces between buildings and colonnades. Others are less so, such as the northwest-southeast orientation of the City’s streets, which optimises shading of streets via building walls, and facilitates natural airflow throughout the City.

Personal Rapid Transit (PRT)
Green Building Materials
The on-demand Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system of electric-powered, automated, single-cabin driverless vehicles which can seat up to 4 people, offers the privacy, comfort and non-stop travel of a taxi service, and the sustainability of a shared public transport system. Operated using a touch screen that sets the PRT in motion to your disembarkation point, the vehicles run along PRT-only corridors. These passenger cars run on a 1,700-metre track that passes from the parking garage PRT station to the Masdar Institute PRT station. The cars are controlled by computer and use sensors to ensure nothing is in their path and to locate magnets that have been embedded in the concrete floor every two metres to help the vehicles navigate. An overhead leaky coaxial cable antenna runs the length of the PRT corridors and provides a wireless link between the individual cars and the PRT system computer.
As you rest on any of the benches across the City, note that like other concrete used in the City these are made from ‘low-carbon’ concrete. This concrete has a significantly lower environmental footprint because up to 40% of the energy-intensive Portland cement is replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), a waste product of iron making. The use of this slag has resulted in concrete that is more resilient against moisture and Abu Dhabi’s hypersaline soil. Most of the aluminium used across Masdar City for sheeting, windows and door frames, comprises 90% recycled aluminium, a product that has one-eighth the carbon footprint of conventional virgin aluminium sheeting. The use of this 90% recycled aluminium is a regional first in the construction industry. All timber is certified as sustainably sourced, while steel reinforcing bars are made with recycled scrap. And what makes the City more eco-friendly, is its heavily reduced need for energy produced by fossil fuels, thus doing a good job in climate action. A purpose-built 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant and an array of building-mounted solar panels offset part of the electricity needs in the current phase of Masdar City.
The PRT Station The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) Station marks the beginning of the Masdar City experience for most visitors. The floors are constructed with prefabricated concrete slabs that are manufactured offsite and fitted together on site, dramatically reducing construction waste. Benches are made of polished low-carbon concrete. Backlit recycled-glass walls accent the PRT station entrance. Inside, the eye-catching glass-walled numeration of the PRT berths and multiple smaller international numbers are embedded into the single large Arabic numeral. The parking berths have recharging panels in the floor, allowing vehicles to recharge while standing in the station.
Students Residential Buildings Masdar Institute’s residential buildings are defined by the terracotta-coloured, undulating glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) balcony ‘screens’ that serve much the same role as traditional Arabic mashrabiya screens. They provide shade and privacy, while allowing air to pass through to cool the balconies. Inside, these buildings have a central enclosed atrium that naturally ventilates the common space for much of the year. During the evening, cool air flows from vents opened on the ground level, cooling the interior walls and flowing out through open louvers at the top of the buildings.

The use of ‘fritting’ on the glass walls also keeps heat at bay yet still promotes diffused natural lighting inside. Some exterior windows can be manually opened to provide natural ventilation of fresh air in cooler weather to significantly reduce cooling requirements. The design of walkways into the building’s open-air interior courtyard helps to ‘lock in’ the cooler shaded air. Different coloured fritting has been applied to different sections on the facade. Higher up the building, the dots are bright yellow and reflective, while ‘cooler’ colours are used towards the building’s base.
In warm weather, these openings are closed during the day to keep cool air in. Walls cooled by the night air then provide thermal cooling to keep the interior hallways pleasant throughout the day.
Knowledge Centre One of the most distinctively shaped buildings in the City, the oval-shaped roof of the institute’s Knowledge Centre reflects the designers’ efforts to optimise photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting through the building orientation and the inclination of the PV panels on the roof’s curved surface. The roof’s large self-shading overhang prevents direct sunlight from causing heat gain inside, while still allowing natural light to illuminate study areas and providing a full wall of glass that will look out over one of the City’s parks. Although the glulam (glued laminated) timber structure is graceful and beautiful, the reason it was chosen over steel was because sustainable timber reduces the building’s embodied carbon footprint. Covering the northeast section of the building’s exterior roof, sustainable folded zinc cladding provides ventilated shading to parts of the building and nearby public spaces.
Multi-use Hall This sports building and performance hall features an open-air swimming pool. Above the pool is an indoor gym and a large multipurpose hall that is used for conferences and sporting events. Ensuring accessible leisure and recreational opportunities for workers, residents and visitors to Masdar City is central to the sustainability objective of creating a viable work-life balance. That’s why streets and public squares are intentionally designed to encourage sitting, whether for a work or informal meeting, to read or simply enjoy the weather. Cafes and restaurants benefit from the City’s pleasant micro-climate, while future development includes more open space such as parks, playgrounds and sports fields. The unusual design choice of putting a building above an outdoor swimming pool optimises land use and provides necessary shading to the pool.
Masdar Wind Tower Rising 45 metres above the plaza in which it stands, the Masdar Wind Tower is a modern interpretation of one of the region’s most iconic traditional architectural features. Its height allows it to capture upper-level winds and direct them to the open-air public square at its base. Sensors at the top of the steel structure operate louvers to open in the direction of prevailing winds and to close in other directions to divert wind down the tower. A PTFE (Teflon) fabric membrane carries the wind downward, while mist generators at the top further cool the air. This combination of evaporative cooling and air movement helps to lower the perceived temperature in the courtyard.
IRENA HQ The seven-storey, 32,000 square-metre complex comprises an atrium surrounded by three buildings and is home to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters. The complex has a 1,000 square-metre rooftop solar PV array that will meet 10% of the building’s electricity requirement. The office building, the first in Abu Dhabi to earn a 4 Pearl Estidama construction rating, reduces overall energy demand by more than 60% compared to a baseline non-Estidama building in Abu Dhabi. It also uses 54% less water than a comparable structure, and 75% of its hot water demand is heated on site with solar heaters. The complex was constructed with advanced sustainable building materials, such as low-carbon concrete, recycled aluminium and steel, and FSC-certified timber. Melius restaurant, located on the ground floor, offers mouth-watering cuisine ranging from Arabic, Italian, Asian and other international dishes.
Siemens Middle East HQ The Siemens Building is a LEED Platinum certified, high-performance office building, whose unmistakable exterior façade has been designed on the concept of a ‘box within a box’. The inner ‘box’ is the highly insulated, airtight wall that provides maximum insulation. Surrounding this is the ‘outer’ box comprising a lightweight aluminium external shading system featuring fins of varying forms. These prevent excess solar heat from reaching the inner ‘box’ and warming the building’s interiors, while maximising views and daylight. The building, which is the company’s Middle East headquarters, ‘floats’ above and shades a public plaza, whose funnel shape accelerates prevailing winds underneath the building. This flushes hot air out of the surrounding public spaces using natural air-flow dynamics. The atriums draw up the warm ground-level air from the building’s plaza and expel it and allow natural daylight to permeate the interior office spaces. Smart metering systems are deployed to monitor energy and water use.
Digital Guestbook The Masdar digital guestbook is an engaging and interactive souvenir of your visit to Masdar City. Created by American artist Joshua Davis, the guestbook invites you to sign your name on the screen. Based on each signature, the guestbook software uses randomisation to create a unique, computer-generated art form that evokes a schematic urban planning map. The slower, more carefully you sign your name, the better the resulting artwork. So be sure to take your time. Once the design is created, the guestbook will send a copy to your email.

Zaabeel Park Located in Zabeel area, this green haven is split into two parts by Sheikh Zayed Road which runs across it. JBR Beach Stretching along the prestigious Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), this is the perfect beach for those who want to spend their time by the sea in style and comfort with lots of food and entertainment offerings to go around. Jumeirah Public Beach This iconic city beach, stretching from Jumeirah Mosuqe to Jumeirah Beach Park, is the perfect beach for seaside jogging and cycling, thanks to a night-lit, four metre-wide track. Kite Beach Dubai Kite Beach has long been a favourite spot for kite surfers hence the name ‘Kite Beach.’ Recently, however, the beach has become popular among beachgoers and families forcing serious surfers to take their sport elsewhere. Almas Tower Home to Dubai’s diamond exchange, Almas Tower is a sparkling example of innovative design. Located in Jumeirah Lake Towers, and rising 360 m in height, Almas Tower was the tallest building in the Middle East when it was completed in 2008, up until it was surpassed by Burj Khalifa in 2010. Almas Tower was designed to meet a particularly challenging brief. It had to be the tallest tower in Dubai, but was also restricted in floor area. The obvious way to meet these requirements is to taper the building as it rises, but the tower’s designers sought a more aesthetically interesting solution than a simple cone. The result is a supremely elegant form, created by intersecting two elliptical towers of different heights, producing a composition that changes subtly as one circles the building.
Capital Gate Owned and developed by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company), Capital Gate building is designed with a striking lean: 18° westwards. At 160 m (35 floor), it is also one of the tallest buildings in Abu Dhabi. Guinness World Records certified Capital Gate as the ‘World’s furthest leaning man-made tower.’ The tower accommodates exclusive office spaces as well as the 5 Star ‘Hyatt Capital Gate’ hotel.

Iris Bay At 170 metres, Iris Bay is a one-of-a-kind structure located in Dubai’s Business Bay area. The tower is designed in the shape of an ovoid and comprises two identical double curved pixelated shells which are rotated and cantilevered over the podium. The rear elevation is a continuous vertical curve punctuated by balconies while the front elevation is made up of seven zones of rotated glass. O-14 Building O-14 stands at the heart of Business Bay, Dubai. The tower is surrounded by a concrete shell which creates a lace-like façade with openings to allow views, sun exposure and luminosity. A space nearly one meter deep between the shell and the main enclosure creates a so-called ‘chimney effect,’ a phenomenon whereby hot air has room to rise effectively cooling the surface of the building behind the perforated shell. This passive solar technique essentially contributes to a natural component to the cooling system for O-14, thus reducing energy consumption and costs.

Located about 12km north of Al Ain city, Hili is one of largest archaeological sites in the UAE, with traces dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. Qasr Al Hosn
Qasr Al Hosn was originally built as watchtower in 1761. It was expanded to become a small fort in 1793, later converted to be the permanent residence of the ruling Sheikh. A major extension of the fort took place in the late 1930s. The fort remained the ruler’s palace and seat of government until 1966. In 2007, it was redeveloped as a historical site and was opened to the public.
Al Jahili Fort
An Al Ain city landmark, Al Jahili Fort was built in 1891. The fort has been carefully restored, and now houses a permanent exhibition of the work of British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger famed for his 1940s crossings of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert.

Sending your children to school The UAE education system offers comprehensive education for students of all ages across many different curriculums, including the English National Curriculum, GCSE, A’level, International Baccalaureate System, as well as British, American, Australian, French and Indian curriculums. This has proved to be very convenient for expat as well as national students interested in pursuing an international degrees in the UAE.
