A WORD FROM THE CHIEF

A word from the Chief To my colleagues with the First Pacific Group

T

his issue of The View comes as First Pacific marks its 40th anniversary in a way we hadn’t ever expected. Please read the joint message from your Chairman and Chief Executive to

learn our thoughts on this remarkable anniversary.

easing congestion elsewhere and boosting the local economy.

Elsewhere in this issue, you will find reporting on the Company’s full-year 2020 results. Notwithstanding the calamity of COVID-19, we managed to deliver overall excellent results, thanks to the talent and effort of our teams in Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Over in Indonesia, we have a report on new product innovations in Indofood’s industry-leading noodles business and its valuable work in developing new talent to carry it onward to greater achievements in the future.

The numbers we delivered deserve a closer look. Indofood and PLDT produced their highest-ever revenues and while MPIC was set back by community quarantines imposed to fight the pandemic, it nevertheless managed to provide shareholders with an unchanged dividend. First Pacific reported its highest recurring profit since 2014 and the excellent balance sheet management of our Treasury team in Hong Kong enabled our Board to increase the full-year distribution to shareholders and – important for creating long-term value – announce a three-year share repurchase program with a budget of US$100 million. One of MPIC’s new projects is one dear to my heart, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway, which recently held an inaugural lighting of its eight 40-meter crosses to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines. This highly complex bridge and road project is nearly three-quarters completed and should be substantially finished by the end of this year, carrying up to 50,000 vehicles a day,

I recently attended the opening ceremony for the Bulacan solar power plant which is now delivering 50 MW of electricity to the Meralco grid. This is merely the first of many investments in renewable energy planned for the years ahead. In fact, MGen aims to build as much as 1,500 MW of renewable electricity before this decade is out, leading the way in providing clean and cheap power while pushing back against the deleterious effects of climate change on our fair but vulnerable Philippines. Don’t forget to read about Person of the Year awardee Chaye A Cabal-Revilla, the new Chief Financial Officer and Chief Sustainability Director at MPIC, who will bring great things on the sustainability front for the Philippines’ most important infrastructure holding company. Lastly, I hope you enjoy viewing the winning snapshots from our sixth photo competition as much as I did in reviewing the submitted entries. It’s a pity we could only pick a few, and I hope we see more wonderful photographs in next competition. << MVP THE VIEW 1

FIRST PACIFIC 40TH ANNIVERSARY

First Pacific’s 40th Anniversary Message As First Pacific marks its 40th year, we would like to take a moment to look back on our journey so far, and reflect on where we are going. Our Company’s first investments marked it as a diverse holding company – one which invests in businesses and manages them – a condition First Pacific retains to this day. In our early, youthful years, our investments were broadly divided into (i) banking and finance (First Pacific Holdings) and (ii) trading and distribution (First Pacific International). This reflects the original premise of First Pacific’s character to be an intermediary of finance as well as of goods and services. In the course of 40 years, our investments have evolved away from our founding principles, driven by changing conditions. Our biggest holdings today are with (i) Indofood which had begun to implement its Total Food Solutions strategy, and is growing to become a multinational food company; (ii) PLDT which is the dominant integrated telecommunications group in the Philippines; and (iii) Metro Pacific Investments, which is one of the largest infrastructure investors in ASEAN. In the 40 years of First Pacific, we have seen good times and bad, learning and growing through the entire experience of building and evolving what many regard as one of the finest investment management and holding companies in Southeast Asia. We are proud of what we have accomplished, and we look to the future secure in the understanding that our experience – and humility taught by that experience – leave us better prepared in the many years ahead. In large measure, where First Pacific is today is owed to the men and women who were part of that journey, then and now. To all of them, we send our heartfelt and humble thanks.

Bridge of hope and progress CCLEX’s iconic bridge blessed and lit to celebrate 500 years of Christianity

T

he Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (“CCLEX”) was blessed and illuminated on 15 April 2021. CCLEX is a 30 billion, 8.5-kilometer toll bridge that will link Cebu City to the Municipality of Cordova in Mactan Island. Eight graceful crosses top the CCLEX’s main bridge pylons and are inspired by the cross planted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago in Cebu, known as a cradle of Christianity in the region. Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (“MPTC”) Chairman Manuel V

Pangilinan was in virtual attendance and said, “We add a deeper and loftier meaning to CCLEX by adding eight 40-meter crosses that celebrate the coming of Christ 500 years ago. These crosses will illuminate the skyline of Metro Cebu - beacons of hope and progress, symbols of achievement, and everything Cebuanos are proud of.” He thanked MPTC’s partners - the local government units of Cebu City and Cordova, contractors, sub-contractors and workers - for progress on the CCLEX project, which he described as a modern engineering marvel.

“In many ways, we at Metro Pacific Tollways are the Magellan’s of today - building ways for people to make discoveries, to travel, and to bring gifts of life and faith, anywhere in this country and even beyond our shores,” he said. CCLEX will not only reduce traffic and make travel greatly more convenient, it will also facilitate trade and accelerate economic opportunities for Cebu and the Visayas region. A DREAM OF THE COMMUNITY Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma led the blessing of the CCLEX crosses on board a yacht in the middle of the Mactan Channel. He said that the bridge linking Cebu City to the Municipality of Cordova is a dream of the community that is now becoming a reality. “The bridge is not just a bridge. The bridge connects and makes people closer together. A beautiful expression of what life should be,” Palma said.

The Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (“CCLEC”) will maintain and operate the facility under a joint venture agreement with the local government units of Cebu City and Cordova. CCLEC is a subsidiary company of MPTC, the toll road arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.

Meralco’s first renewable power plant in commercial operation Milestone in aggressive pursuit of sustainable investments

M

eralco marked a significant milestone in its long-term sustainable energy journey on 12 May 2021. The company’s first solar power plant began commercial operations in San Miguel, Bulacan, a province north of Manila.

BulacanSol is a 50-megawatt (“MW”) power plant providing clean and renewable power to the Luzon grid. The 4.25-billion project is a joint undertaking of MGen Renewable Energy, Inc. (“MGreen”), which owns 60% of the project; and PowerSource Energy Holdings Corporation, with 40%. MGreen is the renewable energy unit of Meralco PowerGen Corporation (“MGen”), which in turn is the power generation arm of Meralco. A SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TRANSITION Meralco Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan commented, “This is a

modest step into renewables but a significant one for Meralco. We look forward to many more investments in renewables, particularly solar, as we attempt to achieve that balance in fuel sourcing, which will ultimately be biased towards renewables.” “In June 2019, Meralco made the first announcement that it would join the shift to renewable energy and it will adopt sustainable practices for the One Meralco Group. And today, we realize the very first renewable power plant – the first of several that One Meralco has lined up for investment and sourcing,” added Meralco President and CEO Atty. Ray C Espinosa.

s of May 2021, MPHHI hospitals had vaccinated 87% of its workers, equivalent to 22,804 out of its 26,168 healthcare frontliners. President and CEO of MPHHI Augusto Palisoc Jr. underscores

the protection and relief this has provided to healthcare workers. “Our hospital workers have been bravely caring for our patients for an entire year, amidst the global pandemic. We really wanted to make these vaccines available to them as soon as possible, especially now that we are experiencing a much bigger surge in cases.” Palisoc said in March 2021. PERFECTING THE PROCESS “The rollout of safe and efficient vaccines is critical to the welfare of our people, as well as to the revival of our economy,” said MPHHI Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan. “As more vaccines

come in over the next few months, the challenge will shift to getting them injected in as many arms as possible,” he added. “Our hospitals are perfecting this process as we speak, and I think we’ll be in a position to offer even greater help to the government and to the wider community very soon.” Pangilinan is supporting the national government by providing an additional two million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines for frontliners. “It is our privilege to assist the government in bringing the vaccines to Filipinos, particularly to medical frontliners”. he said. <<

FIRST PACIFIC GROUP OPENS EMERGENCY QUARANTINE FACILITY FOR EMPLOYEES First Pacific Group has stepped up its efforts in the Philippines to protect its employees and alleviate the pressure on hospitals by opening an internal emergency quarantine facility.

T

he construction of the facility began in early April 2021. The facility will help care for employees with asymptomatic to mild cases of COVID-19. Select areas within the 10-hectare space of the First Pacific Leadership Academy (“FLPA”) in Antipolo, Metro Manila, have been repurposed into makeshift rooms. These rooms augment FPLA’s existing hotel facilities currently being used to isolate employeepatients. The emergency quarantine facility will provide optimal care to employees and help decongest hospitals in Metro Manila following the recent surge of COVID-19 in the region. The facility will house a total of 240 individual air-conditioned quarantine tents and beds. CONTRIBUTING TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY “The essential services – connectivity, power, water, road networks, among others – we have continuously provided since the onset of the pandemic have been the source of stability for

many Filipinos, and it is our employees – the backbone of all our Companies – that have allowed us to be contributors in moving for economic recovery,” Manuel V Pangilinan said. Doctors and nurses to be housed in FPLA will work on 8-hour shifts 24/7 to treat group employees throughout their 14-day isolation. Meals, medical supplies, and phone and data connectivity are all provided. All internal efforts of the group are part of a broader, overall support for the government in its fight against COVID. “Our efforts to take care of our workforce aim to reduce overall community transmission, while protecting and providing breathing space to hospitals and medical frontliners, who have been our anchor and support as we continue to battle this pandemic,” Pangilinan said. DEVELOPING NEXT-GENERATION TALENTS Indofood’s food research grant program

I

ndofood believes that developing human capital through education is key in creating a more sustainable and equitable future. One of the pillars of its community initiatives is the Indofood Riset Nugraha (“IRN”) program, supporting rising innovators by providing them with access to opportunities and support for research.

passing the selection process, which entitled them for the funding, as well as direct guidance and supervision from the experts during the research process. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the theme for IRN is “Millennial and Food Research in the era of new normal towards developing Indonesia”.

Indofood encourages innovation around local food resources and commodities, contributing to the development of nextgeneration local talents who will help strengthen Indonesia’s food security.

The IRN program has unearthed several interesting research proposals, including that of Theresia Sambo, a university student from the province of Papua, with her research on local red fruit as an alternative to rice.

“I received valuable knowledge from the IRN expert team and learned many new and interesting things from my colleagues in IRN 2019-2020. After joining, I can say to fellow students to never give up before trying… because results will never betray the process, when you do it sincerely.”

The research grant is open to students undertaking their thesis research, and those who submit their research proposal to the panel. The IRN research proposal is evaluated by a panel of nine experts in Agriculture and Fisheries Technology; Production Technology (food, animal husbandry, fisheries); Nutrition and Public Health; Molecular Biotechnology; and Socio- Economics.

For the 2020-2021 period, Indofood received close to 300 proposals from 38 local universities, with 60

Indofood collaborates with experts, scientists and distinguished professors of leading universities in Indonesia. Throughout 22 years of IRN’s journey, its research priorities continuously developed in local food diversification, to gradually reduce Indonesia’s dependence on imported food commodities. From all received proposals, over 800 students were selected and awarded grants.

Given the positive impact of the IRN so far, Indofood strives to increase the number of proposals received annually and continue development programs. In the long run, Indofood hopes to develop an innovative talent pool of local food resource researchers across Indonesia. RESEARCHING LOCAL RED FRUIT AS A RICE ALTERNATIVE 22-year-old Theresia Sambo was inspired by her seniors and lecturers at Cenderawasih University (Papua) to submit a proposal for the IRN grant. With their support, Theresia decided to conduct her research on the Red Fruit (Pandanus conoideus), locally known as Buah Merach. The plant is endemic to Papua and West Papua and traditionally used as medicine due to its many health properties. During the pandemic, Theresia continues her research from home. Although research is still underway, initial findings show promising results that Theresia’s rice alternative can be considered for consumption by hyperglycemic patients. Further testing is needed to prove it. <<
