Trough Siberia with Nansen (Gjennom Sibir med Nansen) Ă˜yvind Ravna ISBN 978-82-8104-250-6 Preview of the book: http://issuu.com/orkana/docs/gjennom_sibir_med_nansen Mountain Gazette http://www.mountaingazette.com/mountain-notebook/dateline/dateline-europe-siberianansen/ Throughout history there have been many attempts to establish a sea route between Europe and Siberia. Even though there were attempts to navigate all the way to the Ob and the Yenisei in the last half of the 19th century, Jonas Lied and Fridtjof Nansen's voyage over an ice-covered Kara Sea in 1913 was groundbreaking for the commercialisation of this route. This book is based on a joint Norwegian-Russian expedition organised by the UiT, the Arctic University of Norway, the Northern (Arctic) Federal University in Arkhangelsk and the Norwegian Polar Institute. The expedition aims to follow Fridtjof Nansen's route 100 years earlier, where ice is replaced by open sea, but where we also meet many of the same settlements and villages. After nearly 5,000 kilometres over seas and along rivers, encountering an arctic climate and changing landscape, indigenous peoples and other Northerners along the way, or in conversations with scientists who participated in the journey, the expedition has resulted in a comprehensive and unique book – about the Northern Sea Route, mythical Siberia, climate change, trade, the arms race in the Arctic, and indigenous peoples. It is also a book about exciting experiences and meetings in present-day Siberia, and last, but not least about Nansen and his adventures in 1913, well documented with both contemporary images and unique, previously unpublished photos.

About the Barents Region The beginning of the Barents Region – a study of regional intiatives (Om Barentsregionen Barentsregionens tilblivelse – en studie av regionale initiativ) Lena Ingilæ Landsem ISBN 978-82-8104-222-3 The fall of the Sovjet Union and the end of the cold war opened new opportuneties and it was a precondition for the establishment of the Barents region in 1993. But was that enough? Could the Barents region arise exclusive on the sentral made decisions, or had the communitys involvment something to say in the formation of the Barent region? The book shows how the regional participants wanted a collaboration across the norwegian and russian border in the period 1976–1993. There were some obstacals in the way for a positive development, a knowledge the national authorities benefited from in constructing the traditional Barent region.
Caution & compliance Norwegian-Russian Diplomatic Relations 1814–2014 Kari Aga Myklebost and Stian Bones (eds.) ISBN 978-82-8104-158-5 The anthology consists of articles on the diplomatic relations between the small state of Norway and the Great Russian power over the last two centuries. The articles cover both biographical and thematic perspectives, and includes explorations into the diplomatic service both on a national level and on a regional level in the north. In the north, Norway and Russia has a history of facing questions of common interest, as well as conflicting issues, inside the fields of trade, fishing, international law and not least traditional rights to natural resources along the Russian-Norwegian border. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, the diplomatic relationship between Norway and Russia has been characterized by a certain wariness or caution, much due to the existing threat perceptions and a strong urge on both sides to avoid conflicts across the border. On the other hand, friendliness and compliance stand out as main features of the relationship, ensuring stability and peace both through the tsarist, the Soviet and the post-Soviet epoch. The anthology gives a fascinating insight into internationally renowned personalities, from Anatoly Krupensky and Alexandra Kollontay, two of the first Russian envoys to Norway, to the Norwegian Labour politicians and diplomats Johan Jørgen Holst and Thorvald Stoltenberg.
