The Brief

I am looking to commission a student or a pairing of students to do my wedding invitations and a small amount of order of service, I am looking to have them done in watercolour featuring a simple flower design. There will be 65 invitations needed and 30 order of service Once final design is established, one can be handpainted then photocopied and printed if possible to do to a high standard They are due for 15th may (although this can be discussed if you have deadlines) I will pay ÂŁ80 and as a level 5 photographer I will photograph the work in the studio at portfolio standard.

The Meeting

We met and spoke about the project briefly. I showed her some of my work (the deer) and some other professional projects I thought were in a similar vain (rifle paper company). I agreed to send her over a few samples of what different directions she could take. We didn’t speak about the exact time-scale or the exact amount of money she was paying at this point.

I got to work creating some mock ups based on that conversation. I decided to create elements and put them together in different layout in Photoshop, this was too create an idea of what the final product could be without taking too much time.

I sent the following mock-ups over with this email, at that point I was hoping she would confirm if she wanted me to work on this project, however I didn’t explicitly say that, I also assumed that a follow up meeting would occur to establish details such as colour scheme/venue/date and other matters such as how to write down each individual attendees name

I then received the following email in which the client now outlined the payment and deliverables. The payment mentioned in the first email of £80.00 was actually to be used as part of her print budget, this was not mentioned to me in our first meeting, and stupidly I didn’t ask (lesson one) It was also then outlined that it would be my responsibility to print and prepare the invitations. At this point I knew that I would not be able to take on such a large amount of work, and even though the money wasn’t the sole reason I took on this brief I found it very cheeky that she stated an £80.00 payment when this was in fact not true and since we had not signed any agreement or exchanged any payment I decided to back out of this project.
