Build on regional research strengths to advance collaborative efforts of the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center (FAMRC) and related industry-led International Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research (ICAMR) to provide Orlando and Florida a global competitive advantage in advanced manufacturing technology and opportunities for alignment with existing industry strengths.

The EDC convened monthly meetings to develop strategies for the support of state funding to provide a permanent facility in the UCF/Central Florida Research Park area for locally-based military commands to mitigate the current 200,000-square-foot market rate lease requirement. Maintaining the Team Orlando military presence is vital for the region’s Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) industry.

Fostering State and Local Partnerships This was a year of unprecedented collaboration and partnerships that saw a united region striving to achieve the common goal of building a stronger economy. From the One Orlando Leadership Summit to the efforts of the Regional Economic Developers (RED) Team to leveraging the strength of the region as we prepared to launch the new branding campaign, our partners helped propel our vision of economic opportunity to new heights.

Regional Economic Developers (RED) Team The Regional Economic Developers (RED) Team is comprised of economic development professionals from member counties/communities, higher education institutions, utility companies, workforce development organizations and other EDC partners. ROBERT CHANDLER, Chair Director, Lake County Economic Development and Tourism

The RED Team held the Annual Planning Retreat in April 2014 where each partner presented priorities and recommendations, which were then presented to the EDC Executive Committee for inclusion in the annual plan.

The team works to enhance stakeholder collaboration and leverage, improve operational performance and strengthen the region’s economic development delivery system. During its monthly meetings, regional partners present projects and topics critical to its business community and elected officials.

Central Florida Partnership & Visit Orlando The EDC worked closer than ever to align priorities with the Central Florida Partnership and Visit Orlando. Leaders from all three organizations established regular conversations and jointly worked to create the One Orlando Leadership Summit which was held in December 2013 in an effort to better educate business leaders about the region’s assets. (L-R): George Aguel, Visit Orlando; Rick Weddle, Orlando EDC; Jacob Stuart, Central Florida Partnership at the One Orlando Leadership Summit.

Enterprise Florida The EDC worked in partnership with Enterprise Florida, the statewide economic development organization, throughout the year, including participating in the state’s new branding campaign, “Florida: The Perfect Climate for Business.” The EDC worked alongside other economic development organizations in the state to develop a comprehensive marketing plan to increase consideration of Florida as a business location. As a partner in the program, the EDC participated in several specialized events for site location consultants who are involved in more than half of all economic development projects. Enterprise Florida marketed the state as “Florida: The Perfect Climate for Business” through an aggressive digital, print and broadcast branding campaign.

Marketing the Region’s Assets theBrand Compelling, authentic and valid - the regional branding campaign tells the whole story about the Orlando region. This is a place that is well known but poorly understood from a business perspective. The campaign message, “Orlando. You don’t know the half of it,” highlights our human and material resources, competitive structure ideally suited for emerging industries, and our rich talent pool and asset base.

Orlando. You don’t know the half of it.

This year, the Regional Branding Committee set into motion the Integrated Communications Plan and made final plans for the launch at the beginning of 2015.

Orlando On-The-Road: New York The EDC traveled with leadership to New York in March 2014, touting the new regional business brand, “Orlando. You don’t know the half of it,” to influencers of business location decisions, including site location consultants, c-suite executives and major media outlets. Delegates on the media relations track after a successful meeting with one of Fortune’s top business editors.

One of the highlights of the trip was an intimate luncheon gathering of site location consultants who provided candid feedback on the region’s strengths and weaknesses. Special thanks to Greenberg Traurig for scheduling a presentation with Cushman & Wakefield.

RESULTS New relationships were formed and old relationships were rekindled with site location consultants based in New York during a luncheon hosted at one of New York’s most exclusive private restaurants.

EDC business development delegates following a busy day of meeting with companies.

Annual Report 2013 - 2014 // 7

Altogether, the business development delegation had meetings with 40 site location consultants and 26 c-suite executives from more than 20 companies which resulted in seven new projects with the potential of 2,100 new jobs. The media relations delegation met with 14 national and international reporters from nine top-tier media outlets resulting in story placements in Chief Executive, Forbes and Fortune.

Orlando On-The-Road: Chicago The EDC traveled with leadership, including Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, to Chicago in September 2014. In addition to meeting with company leaders and site location consultants, the EDC team received positive feedback on the new branding platform that aims to educate business location decision makers on Orlando’s key assets as a diverse business community with high-wage industries and an abundant talent pipeline. Special thanks to CBRE, Akerman, LLP and Orlando HarleyDavidson for hosting events for the delegation while in Chicago.

RESULTS

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and staff and EDC President and CEO Rick Weddle presented Orlando updates for Chicago companies.

The delegation held 29 meetings, including three of which were with active projects in Chicago. The team met with 24 site location consultants who represent 1,017 company clients of which 167 are actively engaged in a site location project.

The Chicago Mission delegation debriefed at The Chicago Club.

More than 20 site location consultants were briefed at a luncheon with our delegation led by Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

Marketing the Region’s Assets National, Local and Global Outreach As part of a long-term strategy, the EDC aggressively targeted businesses, targeted industries and geographic markets. A total of 53 missions, trade shows, conferences, special events and incoming international delegations were implemented.

Building Global Connections This year, EDC President and CEO Rick Weddle served as the first American president of the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) providing him with a unique opportunity to represent Orlando to the world’s top scientific companies and research park representatives. In October 2013, Rick traveled with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to Recife, Brazil which coincided with IASP’s 30th annual meeting. The purpose was to convene global researchers, entrepreneurs and policy makers to discuss the positive economic impact research, science and technology parks have on local communities. The meetings were held in Porto Digital, an example of a strong economic engine that could be a positive influence in the ongoing planning for Orlando’s Creative Village. (L-R) Rick Weddle, Orlando EDC; Dr. MJ Soileau, UCF; Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer; Brazil’s Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marco Antonio Raupp during IASP’s 30th annual meeting in Porto Digital.

In June 2014, Rick traveled to Moscow, Russia for the Startup Village event hosted by IASP. The event offered advice on managing science and technology parks and creating knowledge ecosystems. During one of the sessions, Rick showcased Orlando as a prime example of a thriving knowledge ecosystem. In September 2014, Rick traveled to Beijing, China for the 20th anniversary of TusPark Science Park where he provided the keynote speech on the important role science parks play in innovation.

Telling the Story The EDC maintained an aggressive media relations program throughout the year regularly working with local, national and international media as well as online bloggers and social media influencers. In total, the EDC generated more than 246 million publicity impressions through 426 targeted media placements in outlets such as Chief Executive Magazine, fDi Magazine/Financial Times, Forbes, Fortune and Site Selection, to name a few.

Media Coverage Chief Executive Magazine called Orlando a top tech region because of its innovative collaboration between industry and academia. The story quotes Orlando EDC President and CEO Rick Weddle as saying the key to creating a regional climate where commercialization can flourish is to break down the silos between tech-transfer officials, entrepreneurs, large companies, economic development officials and other constituencies to allow them to better communicate and align their interests. The story is a result of the EDC mission to New York City in March 2014 that included meetings with top-tier business reporters and technology outlets.

Orlando’s efforts to create Lake Nona Medical City were featured in Fortune Magazine along with leaders from Tavistock Group, the City of Orlando, University of Central Florida and Nemours Children’s Hospital and ties the EDC’s branding campaign, “Orlando. You don’t know the half of it” into the story. EDC leaders met with Fortune while in New York City on a media mission in March 2014. Site Selection published an update on Life Sciences projects unfolding in campuses around the country including the University of Central Florida. Rick Weddle’s insight, as the EDC President and CEO and as the president of the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP), brought the perspective of how technology can lead economic development and build communities of the future. Partnerships and collaboration were highlighted in fDi Magazine in a piece focused on the growth of the Life Sciences industry in Orlando, Florida, a region famous for being the home of Walt Disney World, but which also hosts more than 4,700 life sciences-related companies that employ some 87,000 people. EDC President and CEO Rick Weddle is quoted discussing how Orlando’s collaborative spirit also plays a key role in its success.

Orlando’s startup community was at the center of Forbes’ story on entrepreneurs collaborating to grow the area’s tech scene. The partnerships with the EDC, UCF’s Business Incubation Program and the National Entrepreneur Center were highlighted as important factors in cultivating an environment of organic growth.

Annual Report 2013 - 2014 // 11

Social Media In preparation for the regional branding campaign, the EDC streamlined its social media efforts to better focus its efforts where its target audiences (c-suite executives, site location consultants, media and influencers and EDC investors) participate - on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube.

RESULTS Social media impressions 3,999,168 Unique users 4,393 Interactions 6,508

Community Outreach The EDC also managed a speakers bureau for key leadership to speak throughout the region and the country. EDC President and CEO Rick Weddle traveled to Washington, D.C. for the White House Economic Development Forum in August 2014 where he met with key members of the Administration to discuss foreign direct investment. Other places EDC leadership spoke throughout the year included: • Interview in “Orlando Rising” documentary • International Economic Development Council

Through the shared experiences about the region in which we live, the One Orlando Leadership Summit set out to increase awareness of our community’s assets, opportunities and challenges. Between Dec. 4 - 6, 2013, more than 150 top executives took an in-depth look at our community assets to learn more about the region they call home and to see if Orlando has what it takes to compete in the war for jobs. A joint effort by the Orlando EDC, Visit Orlando and the Central Florida Partnership, the threeday event offered business and community leaders behind-the-scenes tours and discussions about future growth, state-of-the-art transportation initiatives, the customization of educational programs for the region’s businesses and more. With a focus on “community cohesiveness,” the One Orlando Leadership Summit grew out of an Orlando EDC Leadership Mission trip to Austin, Texas, where a unified approach has transformed its economy and established an effective global brand over the past 20 years. Orlando organizers decided to host an inmarket event where shared learning experiences and strategic discussions around a regional vision, its evolving business brand and underlying economic opportunities would help local leaders emerge more unified and prepared to meet the challenges ahead.

In planning for the future and any potential economic shifts, the EDC added $100,000 to reserves this past year. The EDC ended its fiscal year on September 30, 2014, with more than $1.1 million in reserves.
