Enjoy and explore the life, times, work, and issues of Charles Dickens all year. www.WhatTheDickensOrlando.com DAVID EDGAR (Playwright) After a short career in journalism, he took up writing full-time in 1972. His plays written for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) include Destiny (1976), winner of the John Whiting Award; The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs (1978); The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1980), winner of the Society of West End Theatres’ Best Play award and a Tony Award (USA); Maydays (1983), winner of the Plays and Players Award for Best Play; The Shape of the Table (1990), written for the Royal National Theatre in London; and Pentecost (1994), winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play of the Year.

His work for television includes adaptations of Destiny, screened by the BBC in 1978; The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs, televised by the BBC in 1981; and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, televised by Channel 4 in 1982, as well as the plays Buying a Landslide (1992) and Vote for Them (1989). He is also the author of the radio plays Ecclesiastes (1977), A Movie Starring Me (1991), Talking to Mars (1996), and an adaptation of Eve Brook's novel The Secret Parts (2000). He wrote the screenplay for the film Lady Jane (1986).

He founded the University of Birmingham's MA in Playwriting Studies in 1989 and was its director until 1999. He was appointed Professor of Playwriting Studies in 1995. His latest works are Arthur and George (2010), based on the novel by Julian Barnes, and The Master Builder (2010), a new version of Ibsen's classic. David Edgar is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

CHARLES DICKENS (Author) Charles was born in Portsmouth on February 7, 1812, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. The good fortune of being sent to school at the age of nine was short-lived because his father, inspiration for the character of Mr. Micawber in David Copperfield, was imprisoned for bad debt. The entire family, apart from Charles, was sent to Marshalsea prison along with their patriarch. Charles was sent to work in Warren's Blacking Warehouse and endured appalling conditions as well as loneliness and despair.

After three years, he returned to school, but the experience was never forgotten and became fictionalized in two of his better-known novels David Copperfield and Great Expectations.

Dickens began his literary career as a journalist. His own father became a reporter and Charles began with the journals 'The Mirror of Parliament' and 'The True Sun'. Then in 1833, he became parliamentary journalist for The Morning Chronicle. With new contacts in the press, he was able to publish a series of sketches under the pseudonym 'Boz'. In April 1836, he married Catherine Hogarth, daughter of George Hogarth who edited 'Sketches by Boz'. Within the same month came the publication of the highly successful 'Pickwick Papers', and from that point on there was no looking back for Dickens.

Along with a huge list of novels, Dickens also published an autobiography, edited weekly periodicals including 'Household Words' and 'All Year Round', wrote travel books, and administered charitable organizations. He was also a theatre enthusiast, and wrote plays performed before Queen Victoria in 1851. He was estranged from his wife in 1858 after the birth of their tenth child, but maintained relations with his mistress, the actress Ellen Ternan. He died of a stroke in 1870 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.

JOHN P. KELLER* (Nicholas Nickleby | 2nd Season)

John is thrilled to be returning to Orlando after appearing in this season’s Dracula, as well as last year’s Othello as Roderigo and Sense and Sensibility as Edward. New York credits include world premieres of Summer by Martin Zuckerman, You are Now the Owner of This Suitcase and JH3AM with Theater 167, as well as the 2012 Off Broadway revival of The Violet Hour by Richard Greenberg. Other Regional credits include Cohn in the Contemporary American Theater Festival production of Captors directed by Ed Herendeen, Jonathan Harker in Dracula with Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Bart in Inspecting Carol at George Street Playhouse, and Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with New Brunswick Theater Festival. He is a company member of Mile Square Theater in Hoboken, NJ where he has performed the roles of George Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life, and Orsino in Twelfth Night. STEVEN LANE* (Newman Noggs, Ensemble | 2nd Season)

Steven developed a love affair with The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby after coming across the RSC production on DVD in a library in South Florida almost 15 years ago. It is the realization of a dream to be playing Newman Noggs in this glorious production. He was last seen at Orlando Shakes in Into the Woods as the Wolf. Favorite roles include Man-in-Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone, Che in Evita, Cornelius in Hello Dolly, C.S. Lewis in Freud’s Last Session, Morris in The Heiress, Bride in Titanic, and Lovborg in Hedda Gabler. He is a performer at Disney where he can be seen swinging assorted swords. ALLISON McLEMORE* (Kate Nickleby | Debut Season)

Allison McLemore is so happy to be a part of this amazing and enormous project!

Liz is a current MFA Acting student at UCF, and is very proud to be a part of the production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. You may have seen her in last year's Writes of Spring Cobblestones at the Orlando REP or this year in UCF's One Act Festival production of Mythos. Liz enjoys devised theatre, film work, stage combat, singing opera, composing music, cooking, rock climbing, running, story-telling, and one day plans to own her own performing arts school. Alex, a Chicago native, is ecstatic to be coming back to Orlando Shakes, after being seen last season in Cinderella (Prince/Stepsister) and the World Premiere of The Exit Interview (Walter). A BFA graduate from the University of Florida, Alex can be seen in several venues around town, including Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Sleuths. Joe is overjoyed to be working at Orlando Shakes, and with the Nicholas Nickleby family. Joe has been a member of Actors’ Equity for 36 years. Locally, Joe has been seen in August Osage County, Company, Twelve Angry Men, and Cradle Will Rock at the Mad Cow Theatre. He worked with the Orlando Orchestra performing in Carousel at the Bob Carr. Joe might also be remembered for his roles at The Adventurers Club in Disney’s Pleasure Island. His favorite Disney gig was a six month stint in Tokyo Disney Sea as the Mayor of Porto Paradisio, in which he improvised in English, with an Italian accent, to Japanese guests who spoke neither languages... Go figure.

DANIELLE RENEÉ (Mme. Mantalini Understudy | Debut Season)

Danielle is a graduate of SUNY, Purchase College, now working on her MFA at the University of Central Florida. Credits include: Sarah Maddox in Living in the Wind, Masha in The Seagull, Martha Dobie in the Children’s Hour, and Daughter in Shakin’ the Mess Outta’ Misery. MORGAN RUSSELL (Miss La Creevy, Peg Sliderskew, Ensemble | 4th Season)

Morgan is delighted to be a part of Nicholas Nickleby. Previous productions at Orlando Shakes include the Velveteen Rabbit, Bahgeera in the world premiere of The Jungle Book, and Shakespeare with Heart. She has appeared in Dickens’ By Candlelight for 9 years. A graduate of Rollins College, Morgan is a co-founder of the SAK Comedy Lab in downtown Orlando and has performed hundreds of audience interactive and comedy improv shows including SAK tours in the U.S. and U.K. L.A. credits include Triple Play, Shakespeare Unscripted, and the Life Game (co-director) at Impro Theater. She also directed Romeo and Juliet for Circle Theater Company. Morgan is currently the Director of Training for TeachLivE at UCF and is also a member of iTeam, an interactive performance ensemble.

RYAN M. SKILES (Master Crummles, Pyke, Brooker, Ensemble | Debut Season)

Originally from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, Ryan is a 2nd year MFA Acting candidate at UCF. Ryan received a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University of PA in Music Education in 2000, and taught high school music for 11 years prior to attending graduate school. While teaching, Ryan also directed, music directed, and acted in local theatre productions, as well as served as the Artistic Director for Cresson Lake Playhouse. His stage credits include The Underpants (Klinglehoff), Hidden In This Picture (Robert), Little Shop of Horrors (Seymour Krelborn), and Rocky Horror Picture Show (Riff Raff).

TARA SNYDER (Miss Knag, Vocal Director, Fight Captain, Ensemble | Debut Season)

Tara is a veteran of regional theatre, new show workshops, film, commercials, opera, concerts, and recordings. She holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Central Florida and a BM in Vocal Performance from Capital University. Kevin has previously designed the lighting for The Taming of the Shrew, Opus, Glass Menagerie, Wittenberg, Yankee Tavern, God Of Carnage, and Race and is thrilled to be returning this season. Kevin currently serves on the faculty as resident lighting designer and production manager for the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College. George is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in CT. A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association for the past 20 years, Mr. Hamrah has worked as a Stage Manager for theatres throughout the east coast including Trinity Rep. in Providence, RI, The Barter Theatre in Virginia, Orlando Theatre Project, Florida Rep. and Riverside Theatre in Florida, Walt Disney World, Royal Caribbean International, Acadia Repertory Theatre in Maine and Arena Stage in Washington, DC. George has made his home in Central FL for the past 15 years with his wife Laura Hodos and their three cats. George is currently the Production Manager for Orlando Shakespeare Theater.

JIM HELSINGER

Jim directed the Orlando Shakespeare Theater productions of Titus Andronicus, Cymbeline, The Importance Of Being Earnest, The 39 Steps, All’s Well That Ends Well, Crime and Punishment, Every Christmas Story Ever Told, The Imaginary Invalid, Richard III, The Taming Of The Shrew, Hamlet, and many more. Other directing credits include: The Actor's Theatre of Louisville (A Tuna Christmas, The Compleat Works Of Wllm Shkspr, Abridged), Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (Sleuth, Imaginary Invalid, Charley's Aunt, The Tempest), Florida Repertory Theatre and Actor’s Playhouse (The 39 Steps) Florida Studio Theatre (Good Evening, Mystery of Irma Vep) Cape May Stage (The Big Bang, Stones In His Pockets, Rounding Third, The Fourposter). As an actor he appeared in Wittenberg as Faustus as well as the titles roles of Henry V, Cyrano De Bergerac, Oscar Wilde, Dracula, and Hamlet. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, National Theatre Conference, National New Play Network, and is the past president of the Shakespeare Theatre Association. He also serves as a faculty member at the University of Central Florida. He holds a BA from Miami University (Ohio) and an MFA from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival/University of Alabama Professional Actor Training Program.

PHILLIP INGLE

(Composer | Debut Season)

Phil is a sound designer and composer currently based out of Orlando, FL. For the past two and a half years, he has served as the staff sound designer and audio engineer for the University of Central Florida Theatre Department. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Design and Technology and a Masters Degree in Theatre Studies from Texas A&M University-Commerce, and an MFA in Sound Design from Purdue University in 2011. Some of his recent productions include Jackie and Me at the Orlando Repertory Theatre; The Underpants, Bury the Dead, No Sex Please We’re British, and The Pajama Game at Theatre UCF. KATE INGRAM

(Vocal, Dialect Coach | 5th Season)

Kate is a professional actress and director, as well as an Associate Professor and the Graduate Acting Program Coordinator at UCF. She has taught acting, Shakespeare, dramatic literature, and voice and speech for over two decades. An active member of VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association), she is a Certified Associate of both Lessac and Fitzmaurice voice methods. Her work has been seen at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater as Desiree in A Little Night Music, Beline in Imaginary Invalid, Gertrude in Hamlet, and Elmire in Tartuffe. Some of her roles for Theatre UCF include Claire in The Visit, Eliza Gant in Look Homeward, Angel, Fonzia in The Gun Game, Sister Aloysius in Doubt, Martha in Edward Albee’s Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and the Woman in Veronica's Room. Some of her favorite directing credits include Anna in the Tropics, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Arcadia, Hecuba, Betrayal, The Country Wife, Translations, and Falsettos. One of Ms. Ingram's proudest accomplishments is initiating, producing, and directing Shakespeare-Under-the-Stars at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

CHRISTOPHER NIESS (Director | 2nd Season)

Chris was appointed the new Chair/Artistic Director for Theatre UCF in 2009, having been on the faculty for eight years. His work has spanned many areas in the fields of theatre and dance working on over 200 productions as director, choreographer, actor, dancer, performance artist, clown, or movement coach throughout the U.S., and in Canada, Germany, and Scotland. He has worked for companies including the Cleveland Play House, Nebraska Repertory Theatre, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Porthouse Theatre, the Berkshire Ballet, and the Lexington Ballet; acted in productions of Ken Gray's original play Somethings Missing at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe in Scotland, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, King Lear, The Country Wife, Equus, Life is a Dream,

as Richard in a Suzuki-style Richard III, and Off-Off Broadway in Tap Shoes. Mr. Niess has received three Certificates of Merit from the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival for directing and movement choreography, has had articles published in the Association of Theatre Movement Educators journal, Southern Theatre magazine, and recently his acting treatise--Essence to Action--was published by Lambert Publishing. He is a member of ATME, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and Actors’ Equity Association. His creative work at UCF includes directing Scapin, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, Lend Me A Tenor, Waiting for Godot, No Sex Please, We're British, Love, Sex, and the IRS, and Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music, and roles in Proof, Bus Stop, Dancing at Lughnasa, and Good Boys and True.

STACY RENEE NORWOOD* (Stage Manager | 7th Season)

After graduating in 2006 from Rollins College, Stacy went on to professionally stage-manage multiple seasons at the Depot Theatre, Orlando Shakes, and spent the last 3 summers at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Selected stage management credits include: Sense and Sensibility, Othello, Oscar And Felix, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Pippin, Big Bang, Hamlet, All’s Well That Ends Well, as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pride and Prejudice in repertory. Stacy is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. She thanks her mother, father, and Mike for their endless support.

BRITT SANDUSKY

(Sound Designer | 9th Season)

Britt is thrilled to be part of this production team once again. He formally trained at the Audio Recording Technology Institute here in Orlando. Britt has designed the sound-scapes for many Orlando Shakespeare Theater favorites including Othello, Sense and Sensibility, Race, The Importance Of Being Earnest, The 39 Steps, Shotgun, Schoolhouse Rock Live, Robinson Crusoe, and many others. His film credits include many disciplines such as Foley artist, re-recording engineer, ADR supervisor, dialog mixer, and sound effects supervisor.

BERT SCOTT**

(Scenic Designer | 8th Season)

Bert is the coordinator of the Design & Technology training program at UCF. Bert’s professional design credits include resident designer since 2001 for the Off-Broadway company Theatre Breaking Through Barriers, Stages St. Louis, North Shore Music Theatre, The Carolina Theatre, Theatre West Virginia (9 seasons as resident designer), The Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Mark Twain Playhouse, Theatre By The Sea, The Orlando Rep, Nickelodeon, and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

JACK A. SMITH

(Costume Designer | 10th Season)

Jack is an Associate Professor at Elon University, a private university in Elon, NC. He has worked for a number years as a freelance Costume Designer at many regional theaters from Orlando Shakes to Actor’s Theater of Louisville. Jack spends many of his summers either working at a small theater in Missouri (City of Maples Rep) or traveling the world looking at textiles, antique garments, or cultural wonders. He’s had a gallery exhibit of half-scale period costumes produced at two separate galleries within the past year. His passions include antique textiles (specifically American Women’s Costume from the 19th Century) and his dogs!
