THE STORY Visitor Bill Riddick is sent to Durham, North Carolina to encourage the town to comply with the laws of desegregation that have been put in place by the federal government. He chooses to appoint Ann Atwater, the bold and fearless African American activist, and C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, as co-chairs of his charrette. The Best of Enemies is based on a true story.

WHAT IS A “CHARRETTE”?

char·rette (SHə.ret/)

From Old French charrete “wagon, small cart” A meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions. Charrettes often take place in multiple sessions, with the group dividing into sub-groups. Each sub-group then presents its work to the full group as material for further dialogue. Charrettes serve as a way of quickly generating a solution while integrating the aptitudes and interests of a diverse group of people.

THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 Enacted July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act was a landmark piece of civil rights legislation in the United States that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace, and by facilities that served the general public (known as “public accommodations”). Powers given to enforce the act were initially weak, but were supplemented during later years.

Congress asserted its authority to legislate under several different parts of the United States Constitution, principally its power to regulate interstate commerce, its duty to guarantee all citizens equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment, and its duty to protect voting rights under the Fifteenth Amendment.

The Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, at the White House. 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Using the lessons of the Holocaust as a tool, the Center teaches the principles of good citizenship to thousands of people of all ages, religions, and backgrounds each year. CAST BIOS COREY ALLEN* (Bill Riddick | Debut Season) Corey’s recent New York credits include Moony’s Kid Don’t Cry (Drama League DirectorFest) and Created Equal (Red Fern Theatre).

Regionally, he has appeared in A Few Good Men (Pioneer Theatre Company); A Raisin in the Sun and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Huntington Theatre Company); The Fall of Heaven (The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis); Othello, Twelfth Night, Henry V, King Lear, The Comedy of Errors, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Great River Shakespeare Festival); and The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Cyrano de Bergerac (Utah Shakespeare Festival).

Other favorites include The Pillowman, The Lion in Winter, and Marisol. His recent film credits include Lost in the City and Proximity. He holds an MFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. corey-allen.com AVIS-MARIE BARNES† (Ann Atwater | Debut Season) Avis is originally from Montclair, NJ, and is a BFA graduate of Howard University. For the past 23 years, she has directed plays, taught and coached actors, and built and maintained websites for small businesses in Florida under the name Bitter Bird Webs. On weekends, she works at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure. Previous theatrical credits include Oedipus, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, and A Raisin in the Sun, to name a few, as well as television roles in Sleepy Hollow, Revolution, Resurrection with Omar Epps and Matt Craven, Graceland, and Satisfaction. Film: Jeepers Creepers starring Gina Philips and Justin Long; the horror film Cassadega starring Kevin Alexander of True Blood; Breaking Point directed by James Hunter; and 2015’s Somnia starring Kate Bosworth and Annabeth Gish.

ANNA CAROL (Mary Ellis | 2nd Season) Anna’s previous Orlando Shakes credits include Wigmaker/Ensemble in Les Misérables and Fanny Squeers in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. A Minnesota native, Anna has appeared at the Ordway, Hennepin Stages, Theatre Latte Da, and The Children’s Theatre Company, among others, as a performer and arts educator.

She is currently finishing her MFA in Acting with Theatre UCF/Orlando Shakes and completing her teacher certification in The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique with GLMCC. annacarol.net

RICHARD B. WATSON* (C.P. Ellis | 6th Season) Richard’s Orlando Shakes credits include Nicholas Nickleby, Race, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Cyrano De Bergerac, Complete History of America, Abridged, Macbeth, and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde. Born and raised in Wilmington, NC, Richard now lives in New York City. Recent credits: Mr. Applegate in Damn Yankees at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse and Long John Silver in the world premiere of Treasure Island, A New Musical at Arkansas Rep. Richard was Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady at Sacramento Music Circus, and Sherlock in Sherlock Holmes & the West End Horror at both the Asolo and Pioneer theater companies. NYC: Devils Disciple at Irish Rep, Serendib at Ensemble Studio Theater, and Venus Flytrap at Active Theater. CREATIVE & PRODUCTION BIOS ANGELA R. DAMATO (Assistant Director | Debut Season) Angela made her collegiate directorial debut at the University of Central Florida with the original one-act play Stingray. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from UCF, and was last seen performing in the choir for CFCA’s production of The Music Man. Interested in pursuing directing, Angela is thrilled to be assisting Mr. Routhier.

OSHA GRAY DAVIDSON (Author of the book The Best of Enemies) Osha was born in Passaic, NJ in 1954, and was raised in Iowa. As the award-winning author of six books of nonfiction and more than a hundred articles, he focuses on energy, the environment, and other social and human rights issues. His freelance work has appeared in Grist, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Salon, Mother Jones, and other publications. Davidson co-wrote the screenplay for the IMAX documentary Coral Reef Adventure and his photographs have appeared in Rolling Stone magazine, InsideClimate News, Forbes.com, and elsewhere. Davidson now lives in Phoenix, Arizona, where he publishes the blog The Phoenix Sun. MARK ST. GERMAIN (Playwright) Mark St. Germain has written many plays including Freud’s Last Session (Off Broadway Alliance’s Best Play Award), Camping With Henry And Tom (Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards), Forgiving Typhoid Mary (Time Magazine’s “Year’s Ten Best”), Johnny Pye and the Fool-Killer (AT&T “New Plays For The Nineties Award”), Scott and Hem in the Garden of Allah, and Dr. Ruth, All the Way. Television credits include The Cosby Show, Crime and Punishment, and The Wright Verdicts.

He was also a scriptwriter on the CBS Daytime serial As The World Turns. As a personal project, St. Germain directed/co-produced the documentary MY DOG: An

Unconditional Love Story, featuring Richard Gere, Glenn Close, and Lynn Redgrave.

As a dramatist, St. Germain shows a strong preference for historical fiction, bringing to life historical events and personalities with vivid, imagined dialogue.

KEVIN GRIFFIN (Lighting Designer | 7th Season) Kevin has previously designed the lighting for The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Parts I & II; Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker; Race; Yankee Tavern; Glass Menagerie; Wittenberg; and Opus. Kevin currently serves on the faculty as Resident Lighting Designer and Production Manager for the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College. Short-listing of design credits include: Working, The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Doubt, and Equus for Rollins, Blues Clues, Live! and Never Ending Story for Orlando Rep, Frankie & Johnny In The Clair De Lune for Mad Cow Theatre, and Children Of Eden and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown at Pennsylvania Centre Stage. GEORGE HAMRAH* (Sound Designer/Stage Manager | 8th Season) George is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in CT. A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association for the past 20 years, Mr. Hamrah has worked as a stage manager for theaters throughout the east coast including Trinity Rep. in Providence, RI; The Barter Theatre in Virginia; Orlando Theatre Project; Florida Rep.; Riverside Theatre in Florida; Walt Disney World; Royal Caribbean International; Acadia Repertory Theatre in Maine; and Arena Stage in Washington, DC. George has made his home in Central Florida for the past 15 years with his wife Laura Hodos and their three cats. George is currently the Production Manager for Orlando Shakespeare Theater.

ANDREW MULKEY (Video/Projection Designer | Debut Season) A native of Greenville, South Carolina, Andrew started studying theater at the Fine Arts Center in 2006. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Design and Technology at the University of Central Florida, where his credits include Zombietown (Assistant Sound Designer), Eurydice (Assistant Lighting and Projection Designer), The Underpants (Lighting Designer), and most recently, The Baltimore Waltz (Projection Designer). This past summer he was abroad in the Mediterranean working for Seabourn Cruise Lines as the Stage Manager/Lighting Director aboard the Seabourn Sojourn.

BOB PHILLIPS** (Scenic Designer | 20th Season) Bob celebrates twenty years as Resident Designer for Orlando Shakespeare Theater, during which time he has designed over 80 productions. Bob also regularly designs for Pennsylvania Shakespeare, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Florida Studio Theatre, and Centenary Stage Company, where he is also Resident Designer.
