Our Children’s Series introduces your students to theater in a fun and engaging way. Study guides are designed for each production to create natural connections between the play, common core standards, and your grade level curriculum.

A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens October 22 - November 20, 2015

by Jenny Laird and Will Osborne | Based on the book A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time by Mary Pope Osborne Magic Tree House characters Jack and Annie are sent to Victorian England, where Charles Dickens is suffering from a severe case of writer’s block. Posing as chimney sweeps, the time traveling siblings must conjure up the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to inspire Mr. Dickens to write A Christmas Carol.

"We're in a Play!"

April 7 - May 7, 2016

Script and lyrics by Mo Willems | Music by Deborah Wicks La Puma Based on the books by Mo Willems In this toe-tapping new musical, best friends Elephant Gerald and Piggie sing and dance their way through pachydermal peril and swiney suspense, facing fundamental questions like: what do you wear to a fancy pool party? Should you share your ice cream? And how can two friends play with one toy? Get ready for an interactive experience ripped from the pages of your child’s favorite books!

Recommended 1st – 2nd Grade Fee $155 per class (25 students); $500 for 4 classes During this interactive workshop, students will demonstrate an understanding of the parts of speech (noun, verb, and adjective).

Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s Actor/Educators lead the students in a “Mad Libs” inspired exercise in which they create their very own Elephant and Piggie story they can share with the rest of the class.

Magic Tree House Alive

Recommended 2nd – 4th Grade Fee $155 per class (25 students); $500 for 4 classes During this interactive workshop, Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s Actor/Educators encourage your students to act as authors and create story ideas for their own Magic Tree House adventure.

Through interactive games and theater exercises, students work in groups to pick a historical central character, time period, and magical object, creating a “snapshot” of story elements using their own bodies as statues. Students are introduced to the theater artist roles of director, stage manager, and actor.

Follow-up activities include writing letters to author Mary Pope Osborne explaining their story suggestions and designing book covers based on their ideas.

middle + high school Our Educational Programs are designed to empower Middle and High School students by encouraging active listening, critical thinking, collaborative problem solving, and creative initiative through a 3-step process. First, use our skill-based Study Guides to supplement your students’ introduction to a story or play. Second, enjoy a workshop with our Actor/Educators in your classroom, giving your students hands-on experience with the text. Finally, experience the wonder of a live theatrical performance which will expand your students’ imaginations as we bring the story and characters to life on stage.

Monty Python's SPAMALOT

Book and lyrics by Eric Idle / Music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle DATES: September 15 & 22, 2015 Lovingly ripped off from the classic film Monty Python and The Holy Grail, this saucy musical parody tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. On a quest for the Holy Grail, the Knights encounter flying cows, killer rabbits, and taunting Frenchmen while performing heart-stopping musical numbers. Winner of three Tony Awards including “Best Musical”, SPAMALOT elevates silliness to an art form.

Parental advisory: scantily clad performers and bawdy sexual content.

Peter and the Starcatcher

A Play by Rick Elice / Music by Wayne Barker Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson DATES: December 8, 11, 15, & 18, 2015 Young starcatcher apprentice Molly Aster enlists the help of three orphan boys to return a trunk of precious “starstuff ” to her father. Pursued by a mustached pirate captain, a giant crocodile, and angry mollusks, the children must come face to face with the scariest enemy of all: their looming adulthood. A wildly theatrical, hilarious, and innovative retelling of how a nameless orphan came to be The Boy Who Never Grew Up.

THE TEMPEST or PERICLES

Recommended 7th – 12th Grade FEE $5 per person (student matinee ticket not included) This exciting pre-show workshop prepares your students to experience our production of Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST or PERICLES. In just 30 minutes we will have your students immersed in the world of the play, creating a greater understanding of the plot, themes, and major characters. An excellent introduction to Shakespeare!

March 8, 10, 11, 18, & 25, 2016 Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, finds himself stranded on a remote and mystical island with only his daughter Miranda for company. Seeking revenge against those who conspired against him, Prospero conjures a powerful storm to shipwreck them. Just as retribution is finally within reach, Miranda falls in love with Ferdinand, son of one of the conspirators, putting her relationship with her father to the ultimate test.

Pericles

By William Shakespeare DATES: March 1, 4, 15, 22, & 24, 2016 In Shakespeare’s most fantastical tale, Prince Pericles of Tyre finds his life is in danger after solving the puzzle of a murderous king. Forced to flee across the seas, he embarks on an odyssey in search of adventure, riches, and a lost princess. As he travels to parts unknown, the prince discovers the ultimate satisfaction is simply coming home.

an anti-Bullying Workshop

SuppleMeNt tO tHe teMpeSt AND pericleS recOMMeNDeD 4th – 12th Grade Fee $155 per class (30 students); $500 for 4 classes Up to four classes per day (50 - 60 minutes per class). Shakespeare Alive! is a workshop facilitated by two Orlando Shakespeare Theater Actor/Educators. In the first half, students engage in an interactive plot summary of one of William Shakespeare’s plays. In the second half of the class, 4th and 5th grade students engage in “Insult War” and “Flattery Battle” using vocabulary from Shakespeare’s time. 6th through 12th graders paraphrase Shakespearean text, distinguishing between the denotative and connotative meanings of words. Shakespeare Alive! is a perfect companion experience to attending a student matinee! Limit 30 students per class period.

recOMMeNDeD 5th – 12th Grade Fee $155 per class (30 students); $500 for 4 classes Up to four classes per day (50 - 60 minutes per class). Point of View is an interactive workshop facilitated by two Orlando Shakespeare Theater Actor/Educators which leads students through an examination of bullying. Using theater games, students explore how the use of gesture, posture, vocal inflection, and verbal content informs status in everyday interactions. The workshop helps students develop a vocabulary which encourages them to endow classmates with higher status. This workshop can be used as a companion to seeing The Tempest or as a complement to your own curriculum. Limit 30 students per class period.
