ABOUT KING HENRY V (1397-1422) The son of Henry IV, Henry was born in 1387. He was knighted as Prince of Wales by Richard II in 1399, when his father usurped the throne in the same year. Henry was descended from John of Gaunt, the third son of Edward III, which was his claim to the throne.

In 1403 Henry abandoned his recklessness ways and joined forces with his father to fight Harry Hotspur at Shrewsbury. The 16-year-old prince was almost killed when he was shot in the face with an arrow, but he survived due to the good care he was given, such as honey being used as an antiseptic. Henry was left with permanent scars.

Henry became king upon his father’s death in 1413. Determined to regain the lands in France held by his ancestors, he invaded in 1415 and captured the French harbor city of Harfleur. He then defeated a superior French force in the Battle of Agincourt, one of the most famous battles of English history.

In 1420, he entered Paris, and married Catherine of Valois. He fell ill and died in September 1422 from dysentery. His son, who become Henry VI, ruler of both France and England, was just a few months old when his father died.

PLAY SYNOPSIS - SPOILER ALERT! Set in the early 15th century, the political situation in England is tense: King Henry IV has died, and his son, the young King Henry V, has just assumed the throne. Several bitter civil wars have left the people of England restless and dissatisfied. Furthermore, in order to gain their respect and that of the court, Henry must close the door on his wild adolescent past.

At the encouragement of his advisors Henry lays claim to certain parts of France. The young French prince (the Dauphin) sends Henry an insulting message in response to these claims. With the clergy’s support, Henry decides to invade France.

Henry’s decision trickles down to affect the common people he rules. In the Boar’s Head Tavern in Eastcheap some of Henry’s former friends Bardolph, Pistol, and Nym—whom he rejected when he rose to the throne—prepare to leave their homes and families to join the English army. As they prepare for the war they lament the death of Falstaff, an elderly knight who was once King Henry’s closest friend.

Just before his fleet sets sail, King Henry learns of a conspiracy against his life. The three English traitors working for the French beg for mercy, but Henry denies their request. He orders that the trio, which includes a former friend named Scroop, be executed.

The English sail for France, where they fight their way across the country. Against incredible odds, they continue to win after conquering the town of Harfleur. In the long March to Calais, Henry’s men grow tired and sick—and many die of disease. As the English advance, Bardolph is caught looting and is hanged at King Henry’s command.

The climax of the war comes at the famous Battle of Agincourt, at which the English are outnumbered by the French five to one. The night before the battle King Henry disguises himself as a common soldier and talks to many of the soldiers in his camp, learning who they are and what they think of the great battle in which they have been swept up. When he is by himself, he laments his ever-present responsibilities as king and prays to God for victory.

Miraculously the English win the battle, and the proud French must surrender at last.

Some time later, peace negotiations are finally worked out: Henry will marry Katherine, the daughter of the French king. Henry’s son will be the king of France, and the marriage will unite the two kingdoms.

BACKGROUND NOTES FOR HENRY V About the Black Prince of Wales Edward, Black Prince of Wales, was the first born son of King Edward III. When father and son invaded France, they won the Battle of Crecy when their company, made mostly of English archers, defeated a vastly larger French force of armored knights. The cream of the French nobility was destroyed. The Black Prince died young, however, and the invasion was France was not completed.

About Richard II Upon the death of Edward III, the throne passed to the Black Prince’s son, Richard II, who was only ten years old. As he came of age, Richard was notorious for his ill-advised government, leading to civil war. Henry of Bolingbroke usurped the throne, becoming Henry IV. Richard II was murdered, making the “Hundred Year’s War” for the English Throne.

About Prince Hal and Falstaff Prince Hal (Bolingbroke’s son) spent his youth drinking with his best buddy, the fat knight Falstaff and his cronies Bardolph, Pistol, Nym, and Mistress Quickly. Henry eventually left Falstaff, and fought bravely in the Battle of Shrewsbury.

About the Invasion of France and Harfleur After his father’s death, Prince Hal became Henry V and made claim to the throne of France. He invaded the country with 12,000 men and attacked Harfleur, but the siege took five long weeks and many of his men died of dysentery. After taking Harfleur, Henry began the long march to the English stronghold at Calais, but he was delayed at the Somme River, and when he finally crossed it, his sick and enfeebled troops were reduced to 6,000.

About Agincourt and the English longbow Meanwhile, a French army of over 20,000 descended on Henry, stopping him near the castle of Agincourt. Henry chose a field with forests on either side as his battleground, forcing the French into a narrow funnel. The rains had turned the field to thick mud, miring the French horses and heavily armored knights. The English longbowmen sent thousands of arrows into the French lines, killing horses and men alike and at the end of the day, the English won one of the greatest victories in the history of warfare.

Kate Ingram* (French King & others | 6th Season) Kate is a professional AEA actor and director, Associate Professor at UCF, and Graduate Acting Program Coordinator, with extensive experience as a dialect and speech/text coach for many Orlando theater companies. She has taught acting, Shakespeare, dramatic literature, and voice and speech for three decades. Training and experience includes intensive study with Cicely Berry (RSC, England) and Meisner training (William Esper, NYC). She is a member of VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) and a Certified Associate of Lessac and Fitzmaurice voice methods. Previous Orlando Shakes roles: Desiree in A Little Night Music, Beline in Imaginary Invalid, Gertrude in Hamlet, and Elmire in Tartuffe. Theatre UCF roles: Claire in The Visit, Eliza Gant in Look Homeward, Angel, Fonzia in The Gin Game, Sister Aloysius in Doubt, Martha in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and the Woman in Veronica’s Room.

Stephen Paul Johnson* (Canterbury & others | Debut Season) Stephen is pleased to be making his first appearence with Orlando Shakespeare Theater. For sixteen seasons he has been a featured actor with New York’s Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, where favorite roles have included King Lear, Prospero, Shylock, and Titus Andronicus. Other regional credits include A.C.T. (San Francisco), The Shakespeare Theatre (D.C.), Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Asolo Theatre (FL), six years as artist-in-residence with PCPA/Theatrefest (CA), and two international tours with West Side Story. Television appearances include Boardwalk Empire, Law & Order, and Law & Order: SVU.

John P. Keller* (Henry V & Dauphin | 3rd Season) John is thrilled to be returning to Orlando Shakes after appearing in the title roles of last season’s Dracula and Nicholas Nickleby, as well as 2013’s Othello as Roderigo and Sense and Sensibility as Edward. NY credits: Summer, You are now the Owner of This Suitcase, and JH3AM with Theater 167, as well as the 2012 Off Broadway revival of The Violet Hour by Richard Greenberg.

Selected regional credits: Contemporary American Theater Festival’s Captors, Dracula with Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Inspecting Carol at George Street Playhouse, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream with New Brunswick Theater Festival. TV: Beckert, Season 5 of Boardwalk Empire. John has taught acting at Rutgers University and Rider University, sits on the Leadership Board of New Brunswick’s of coLAB Arts, and is founder/director of coLAB’s theaterLAB education initiative. He is also a board member of the Town Clock Community Development Corporation in New Brunswick, dedicated to building permanent supportive housing for women and children escaping domestic violence. Geoffrey Kent* (Exeter & others/Fight Director | 4th Season) Geoffrey’s previous Orlando Shakes roles include Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Iachimo in Cymbeline, and Lucius in the bloody Titus Andronicus. A thirteen year veteran of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, his credits include Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Benedick in Much Ado, Edmund in King Lear, Garry in Noises Off, Hotspur in Henry IV Part 1, Macduff in Macbeth, and Aramis in The Three Musketeers. Additional selected credits: Orsino in Twelfth Night and Richard Lionheart in The Lion in Winter (Arvada Center); Paris in Romeo and Juliet, Lodovico in Othello, and Ratcliffe in Richard III (Denver Center Theatre Company); and Crumpet in The SantaLand Diaries (Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company). He is a former President of the Society of American Fight Directors, an instructor at the University of Denver, and the proud owner of a seven pound chihuahua named Titus.

Haugen** (Lighting Designer | 20th Season) Through his company, Luminous Design Studios, Eric has designed the lighting for numerous theatre, television, architectural, and themed entertainment projects over the past 25 years. Eric has lit many productions at Orlando Shakespeare, beginning in 1995 with Othello and The Taming of the Shrew at Lake Eola up through this season’s A Christmas Carol. Eric’s lighting has also been seen Off-Broadway in New York on several musicals including The Ark and The Prince and the Pauper, as well as around the country in many regional theatres. Andrew Mulkey (Video/Projection Designer | Debut Season) A native of Greenville, South Carolina, Andrew started studying theater at the Fine Arts Center in 2006. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Design and Technology at the University of Central Florida, where his credits include Zombietown (assistant sound designer), Eurydice (assistant lighting and projection designer), The Underpants (lighting designer), and most recently The Baltimore Waltz (projection designer). Previous Orlando Shakes credits include video/projection design for The Best of Enemies. This past summer he was abroad in the Mediterranean working for Seabourn Cruise Lines as the Stage Manager/Lighting Director aboard the Seabourn Sojourn.

Stacy Renee Norwood* (Production Stage Manager | 8th Season) After graduating in 2006 from Rollins College, Stacy went on to professionally stagemanage multiple seasons at the Depot Theatre, Orlando Shakes, and Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Mick O’Neill* (Stage Manager [March 10-22] | 3rd Season) Mick O’Neill was in the booth this season for the incredibly successful run of Les Misérables, as well as the repertory productions of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Recently, Mick was the Assistant Director for Broadway & Beyond, the Grand Premiere of The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, starring Norm Lewis & Sierra Boggess.

Bob Phillips** (Scenic Designer | 20th Season) Bob celebrates twenty years as Resident Designer for Orlando Shakes, during which time he has designed over 80 productions. Bob also regularly designs for Pennsylvania Shakespeare, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Florida Studio Theatre, and Centenary Stage Company, where he is also Resident Designer. Bob is Production Designer for ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Come On Over’. He has received the Outer Critics Circle, Madison, Villager, and Lillian Stoates Awards for his theatre work, and six Emmy awards for his television designs.

William Shakespeare (Playwright) William (April 26, 1564 - April 23, 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Lisa Zinni** (Costume Designer | 4th Season) Lisa is happy to be returning to Orlando Shakes where she previously designed Titus Andronicus, King Lear, and The Imaginary Invalid. Lisa is a New York based Costume Designer and Stylist, who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and on regional productions. Her Broadway credits include Associate Designer for RENT, HAIR, and A Christmas Story the Musical, as well as the touring and international companies of these productions. She is the US Associate for the upcoming Broadway production of An American in Paris opening in April.
