DIRECTOR’S NOTE In 1962, my parents loaded the nine of us into the Buick station wagon—I was relegated to “the way back”—and took us to the big city to see To Kill a Mockingbird in its opening week.

I loved Scout and identified intensely with her. And I loved reading recently that Anna Quindlen doesn’t trust anyone who doesn’t “get” Scout. She’s right!

Then I read the novel in junior high, as so many of us did and still do. My focus shifted from the spunky girl to her idealized father, which, in candor, I didn’t have. But did anyone then—does anyone now—have a dad like Atticus Finch?

Rereading Mockingbird as an adult I am struck by the ways in which the story at once reconnects me to how it touched me as a kid and at the same time reveals deeper and more complex truths. It speaks to all of us: young and old, women and men, Southern and Northern, black and white. Oprah Winfrey, by the way, calls Mockingbird “Our American novel.” She’s right, too! To Kill a Mockingbird is an easy and graceful read, beautifully written and structured, and truly moving from many perspectives.

Since 1933 (the year in which the novel is set) through 1960 (the year it was published) to 2015, Americans’ views on race have shifted. I think most would say that things have improved. But we still grapple with many of the same issues that vex Harper Lee’s characters; change, when it comes at all, is excruciatingly slow.

As we rehearse this production, Americans, their hands held above their heads, have taken to the streets in cities all over the country with the cry, “Black Lives Matter.” Mockingbird resonates in 2015 as much as it did when it was published. People who look like Tom Robinson are accused—even killed—because of false assumptions and racial bias.

In the play, after the trial, a character remarks, “maybe we’re taking a little step.” We hope and fight for a world where the kind of prejudice Tom Robinson encounters is unimaginable; art like To Kill a Mockingbird reminds us that there are many more steps to take and nudges us to believe that, someday, we just might get there.

SyNOPSIS - SPOILER ALERT! John Falstaff is having financial difficulties. On top of that, Justice Shallow and his youthful cousin, Slender, have come to Windsor because Falstaff has conned them out of money.

Falstaff decides to woo the wives of two of the town’s leading merchants, Page and Ford, to get money out of them. He sends his page, Robin, to each of the wives with a letter. The wives compare the letters and find that they are identical.

The wives decide to teach Falstaff a lesson and devise a plan. They invite him to Mistress Ford’s house at a time when Master Ford will be out. Falstaff ’s companions, Pistol and Nym, tell Master Ford about Falstaff ’s intentions and Ford, a naturally jealous man, resolves to catch his wife being unfaithful. He disguises himself as Master Brook, a man with a passion for Mistress Ford, and goes to Falstaff and offers him money to woo her on his behalf.

Falstaff tells him that a meeting has already been arranged and agrees to ‘Master Brook’s’ request.

Meanwhile, Slender has made friends with a local clergyman, Parson Evans, and has fallen for Page’s daughter, Anne. But Anne is already secretly meeting a young courtier, Fenton, of whom Page disapproves. Anne’s mother, Mistress Page, is determined that she will marry the French doctor, Caius. When Caius hears about Slender’s suit he challenges Parson Evans to a duel. The landlord of the Garter Inn confuses matters by setting different places for the duel, which results in the antagonists making up their differences.

Falstaff arrives at Mistress Ford’s house but his wooing is interrupted by Mistress Page’s announcement that the men are returning. They hide Falstaff in a large laundry basket, and he is carried out and tipped into a muddy river bank. The wives, amused by his folly, decide to repeat the incident and invite Falstaff to come again. He is reluctant but Master Brook persuades him to accept, but his visit is again interrupted by Master Ford. Ford searches the laundry basket but this time Falstaff is disguised as the elderly aunt of one of the servants. When Ford finds nothing in the laundry basket he loses his temper and angrily beats the ‘aunt’ out of the house. The wives laughingly tell their husbands about the trick and Page suggests that they should publicly humiliate Falstaff to stop him from preying on honest wives.

Mistress Ford invites Falstaff to meet her at night in Windsor Park, disguised as Herne the Hunter. Parson Evans organizes Anne and some children to dress as fairies. Anne plans to elope with Fenton, while her parents are plotting her kidnapping by Caius and a secret marriage to him. They all meet in the park and Falstaff is pinched and taunted by the fairies. Anne escapes and returns as Fenton’s wife, while Caius and Slender both find that they have eloped with boys. The play ends with the Pages giving their blessing to Anne’s marriage and everyone laughing at the evening’s antics and the humiliation of Falstaff.

Graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at UCF, Ahmed found a passion for performing and has acted in numerous stage and film productions. Favorite credits: The Best of Enemies (u/s for Bill Riddick), StopKiss, Wizard of Oz, Masque of the Red Death, and We Carry the Dream. Thanks to his mother for her unwavering support, his mentors Marco DiGeorge and Robb Maus at Truthful Acting Studios, his best friends Juan Vodniza and Alvis Horne, his TA family, and the entire To Kill a Mockingbird company for their support throughout this journey into the wonderful unknown.

Sheryl Carbonell (Calpurnia - Mockingbird | Debut Season) Sheryl is honored to be part of the cast of To Kill a Mockingbird, one of her favorite stories of all time. She is also excited to be making her Orlando Shakes debut! Mark Ferrera (Shallow - Merry Wives | 2nd Season) Mark made his Orlando Shakes debut as Michael Novak in 2011’s God of Carnage. Previous Orlando credits include Molly Sweeney and A Child’s Christmas in Wales with Mad Cow Theatre, I Never Saw Another Butterfly for the Orlando Repertory Theatre, and Moonlight and Magnolias with Jester Theater Company. He has been working at the ESPN Club for 18 years, and also works for Disney Cruise Line as a Show Director and writer. He considers himself highly fortunate to have two wonderful kids (now grown up!) and a beautiful, talented, and generous woman in his life.

Kennedy Joy Foristall (Scout - Mockingbird | Debut Season) Kennedy Joy is delighted to make her Orlando Shakes debut in one of her alltime favorite stories. Recent credits include Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (Mad Cow Theatre), The Music Man (Theatre UCF), The Wizard of Oz (Garden Theatre), Naughty is Nice Cabaret (The Abbey), and Grapes of Wrath, Lizzie Borden the Musical, and A Christmas Carol (Theatre Downtown). While her first love is theater, Kennedy Joy also enjoys working as a film, commercial, and voice-over actress/singer. She thanks God, her family, friends, and the precious “mockingbirds” among us who teach us about true courage and love.

Rashad Guy (Townsperson - Mockingbird; Slender - Merry Wives | Debut Season) Rashad made his Orlando Shakes debut in Les Misérables earlier this season, and is excited to be back for the Classic Rep. He currently works at Animal Kingdom’s Finding Nemo: the Musical. Favorite credits include Loud Stone in Eurydice (Theatre UCF), Jud in Sharknami: the Musical (Orlando Fringe Festival), George in School House Rock (Winter Park Playhouse), and Donkey in Shrek: the Musical (Stephen Foster Assn.). BFA in Acting from the University of Central Florida.

Eric Hoffmann* (Bob Ewell - Mockingbird; Hugh Evans - Merry Wives | 2nd Season) A New York based actor, director, and teacher, Eric is thrilled to return to Orlando where he appeared in Orlando Shakes’ second season. He recently completed an amazing 3-year run as Officer Krupke in the 50th Anniversary World Tour of West Side Story. Regional credits include appearances at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre (three seasons), Theatre Virginia, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, McCarter Theatre, and the St. Louis and Alabama Shakespeare Festivals. He spent nine seasons at Washington DC’s Shakespeare Theatre as a company member and instructor where his more than 20 credits include favorite appearances in Hamlet, Measure for Measure, Henry IV and V, Coriolanus, and Camino Real. His nine seasons with The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey include appearing as Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Don Armado in Love’s Labours Lost, and Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing. Warren Kelley* (Atticus Finch - Mockingbird; Master Ford - Merry Wives | 3rd Season) Warren resides in NYC and works in television, film, and on the regional theatre circuit. He has appeared in more than 200 productions to date at such theatres as Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Fulton, Goodspeed, Pioneer, Riverside, Arrow Rock Lyceum, and Walnut Street Theatre. Christopher Niess+ (Judge Taylor - Mockingbird; Host of the Garter - Merry Wives | 3rd Season) Christopher is on professional development leave from the UCF School of Performing Arts, where, as an associate professor, he teaches acting and stage movement. He co-directed The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby with Jim Helsinger last season, and was last seen in King Lear at Orlando Shakes. He has appeared in a variety performing arts venues including with the Cleveland Playhouse, Porthouse Theatre, Nebraska Repertory Theatre, Albany-Berkshire Ballet, and Lexington Ballet. He has also served as Artistic Director for the Great Lakes Festival Ballet and Ballet Theatre Ohio, and is a past Chair/Artistic Director of the UCF Department of Theatre.

Suzanne O’Donnell* (Mrs. Dubose - Mockingbird; Mistress Page - Merry Wives | 15th Season) Suzanne recently appeared in Pluto, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, The Cortez Method, Othello, Sense and Sensibility, Farndale Avenue…, and God of Carnage at Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Her first season at Orlando Shakes was in 1993 playing Rosalind in As You Like It and Adriana in The Comedy of Errors.

Other OST credits include: the Governess in Turn of the Screw, Mistress Ford, Hermione, Hermia, Lady Percy, Julia, Ophelia, Emilia, Beatrice, and Kate in The Taming of the Shrew.

He was involved in regional premieres of Red (Ken), Clybourne Park (Jim/Tom/ Kenneth), Grace (Steve), The Lyons (Curtis), 4000 Miles (Leo), and Other Desert Cities (Tripp). Danielle Reneè (Townsperson - Mockingbird; Anne Page - Merry Wives | 2nd Season) Danielle is excited to be working on her second season at Orlando Shakespeare Theater, previously appearing in A Christmas Carol (Daughter/Belle), Nicholas Nickleby (Madame Mantalini), and Les Misérables. She is a graduate of SUNY, Purchase College and is now working on her MFA at the University of Central Florida. Additional credits include Multiracial Woman in Proclamation of a Multiracial Woman, Detective Tupolski in Pillowman, Sarah Maddox in Living in the Wind, Masha in The Seagull, and Daughter in Shakin’ the Mess Outta’ Misery. In addition to her time spent on stage, she has worked as a director, writer, teacher, artistic manager, and casting director. Walker Russell (Jem - Mockingbird | Debut Season) Walker is excited to appear in his first Signature Series production at Orlando Shakespeare Theater! Walker has appeared at Orlando REP as Grover Dill in A Christmas Story: the Musical, Marcellus in Music Man Jr., Mealy Potatoes in Young David Copperfield, and Everett in Crazy For You. He would like to give a shout out to his sister Marina who has been an inspiration for him.

Michael Sheehy (Boo Radley - Mockingbird; Pistol - Merry Wives | Debut Season) Michael is ecstatic to be spending the next year at Orlando Shakes. He was last seen as Stanley in The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley and Grantaire in Les Misérables. A recent graduate of the University of Kentucky, he received his degree in Musical Theatre. Additional credits include Maples Repertory Theatre’s Forever Plaid (Sparky) and Big River. Other professional credits: The Wizard of Oz (Theatre West Virginia), Rocket Boys: The Musical (Theatre West Virginia), Pathway to Freedom (Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre), and in Lil’ Abner (Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre). Ryan M. Skiles (Nathan Radley/Court Clerk - Mockingbird; Nym/Ford Servant (Robert) Merry Wives | 2nd Season) Originally from Pennsylvania, Ryan is a 3rd year MFA Acting candidate at UCF. Ryan received a degree in Music Education from Indiana University of PA in 2000, and taught high school music for 11 years. While teaching, Ryan directed, music directed, and acted in local theater productions, and served as the Artistic Director for Cresson Lake Playhouse. In 2012, Ryan turned his puppet-building hobby into a small business, building professional custom puppets for clients across the country. Stage credits include The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley (Mr. Lambchop), Les Misérables (Factory Foreman/Brujon), Nicholas Nickleby (Jackson/Brooker/Pyke/M. Luke Timmel (Robin - Merry Wives | Debut Season) Luke is 12 years old and attends seventh grade at Holy Family Catholic School.

He played the title role in Oliver! at the Winter Garden Theatre, as well as Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird and Gavroche in Les Misérables at at Dr. Phillips High School. Luke would like to thank his family, Maddy Montz, and Ms. Rugerio for all their support over the past four years. CREATIVE & PRODUCTION BIOS KEVIN GRIFFIN** (Lighting Designer | 7th Season) Kevin has previously designed the lighting for The Best of Enemies, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Parts I & II, Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker, Race, Yankee Tavern, Glass Menagerie, Wittenberg, and Opus. Kevin currently serves on the faculty as resident lighting designer and production manager for the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College. A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association for the past 20 years, Mr. Hamrah has worked as a stage manager for theaters throughout the east coast including Trinity Rep. in Providence, RI; The Barter Theatre in Virginia; Orlando Theatre Project; Florida Rep.; Riverside Theatre in Florida; Walt Disney World; Royal Caribbean International; Acadia Repertory Theatre in Maine; and Arena Stage in Washington, DC. George has made his home in Central Florida for the past 15 years with his wife Laura Hodos and their three cats. George is currently the Production Manager for Orlando Shakespeare Theater.

Harper Lee (Author - To Kill a Mockingbird) Descendent from Robert E. Lee, the Southern Civil War general, Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama. Her father was a former newspaper editor and proprietor, who had served as a state senator and practiced as a lawyer in Monroeville. Lee studied law at the University of Alabama from 1945 to 1949, and spent a year as an exchange student in Oxford University, Wellington Square. Six months before finishing her studies, she went to New York to pursue a literary career. She worked as an Airline reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and British Overseas Airways during the 1950s. In 1959 Lee accompanied Truman Capote to Holcombe, Kansas, as a research assistant for Capote’s classic ‘nonfiction’ novel In Cold Blood (1966). To Kill a Mockingbird was Lee’s first novel and although it gained huge success, she did not continue her career as a writer.

Mick O’Neill* (Stage Manager | 3rd Season) Mick O’Neill is excited to be back this season. He was last at Orlando Shakes in the booth for the incredibly successful run of Les Misérables. Most recently, Mick was the Assistant Director for Broadway & Beyond, the Grand Premiere of The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, starring Norm Lewis and Sierra Boggess.

Thomas Ouellette (Director - To Kill a Mockingbird | 7th Season) At Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Thomas has directed Race, Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, Arms and the Man, and I Hate Hamlet. Other recent directing credits include Blithe Spirit and Rumors at St. Michael’s Playhouse in Vermont, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Local audiences have also seen Thomas onstage as Adam in Next Fall, Hysterium in …Forum, and Father Farley in Mass Appeal at Mad Cow Theatre. Thomas teaches directing and acting at Rollins College and has served as Director of Theatre, Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance, and Producing Director

Thomas received the Cornell Distinguished Faculty Award at Rollins in 2010 and used grant funds to create a course for graduating theatre majors. Designed to serve as a bridge between academic and professional theatre, the course culminates with a showcase for casting agents in NYC. Holly Payne** (Costume Designer - The Merry Wives of Windsor | Debut Season) Holly is delighted to design for Orlando Shakes. Since graduating from the University of Arkansas, she has designed for Utah Shakespeare Festival, Arkansas Shakespeare Theater, Skylight Opera, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Florentine Opera, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, First Stage Children’s Theater, University of Tulsa, and TheatreSquared in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Britt Sandusky (Sound Designer | 10th Season) Formally trained at the Audio Recording Technology Institute here in Orlando, Britt was the Audio Engineer for Les Misérables, and has designed the sound-scapes for many Orlando Shakespeare Theater favorites including Flat Stanley, Othello, Sense and Sensibility, Race, The Importance Of Being Earnest, The 39 Steps, Shotgun, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, and Robinson Crusoe. His film credits include Foley artist, re-recording engineer, ADR supervisor, dialog mixer, and sound effects supervisor.

Christopher Sergel (Playwright - To Kill a Mockingbird) Christopher’s interests and talents led him on many adventures throughout the world. As captain of the schooner Chance, he spent two years in the South Pacific; as a writer for Sports Afield magazine, he lived in the African bush for a year; as a lieutenant commander during WWII, he taught celestial navigation; as a playwright, his adaptation of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio was seen on Broadway. But throughout his life, his greatest adventure and deepest love was his work with Dramatic Publishing. During this time, he wrote adaptations of To Kill a Mockingbird, Cheaper By the Dozen, The Mouse That Roared, Up the Down Staircase, Fame, Black Elk Speaks, and many more. His love of theatre and his caring for writers made him a generous and spirited mentor to many playwrights here and around the world. His inspiration and integrity attracted to the company fine writers including C.P. Taylor, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Arthur Miller, Roald Dahl, and E.B. White - to name just a few.

Bert Scott** (Scenic Designer | 9th Season) Bert is the coordinator of the Design & Technology training program at UCF. Bert’s professional design credits include resident designer since 2001 for the Off-Broadway company Theatre Breaking Through Barriers, Stages St. Louis, North Shore Music Theatre, The Carolina Theatre, Theatre West Virginia (9 seasons as resident designer), The Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Mark Twain Playhouse, Theatre By The Sea, The Orlando Rep, Nickelodeon, and Norwegian Cruise Lines. William Shakespeare (Playwright - The Merry Wives of Windsor) Shakespeare (April 26, 1564 - April 23, 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His many works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long

(cont’d.) narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Brian Vaughn (Director - The Merry Wives of Windsor | 2nd Season) Brian Vaughn is thrilled to be back at Orlando Shakespeare Theatre having previously directed Othello in 2013. Currently Artistic Director of The Utah Shakespeare Festival, Brian has appeared in over 40 productions, including the title roles of Hamlet, Henry V, and Cyrano de Bergerac. His recent directing credits include Henry IV pt. 1, Henry IV pt. 2, Dial M for Murder, Greater Tuna, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Nell Gwynn, The Hard Way, and the first regional premiere of Peter and the Starcatcher. His numerous acting credits include roles with Arizona Theatre Company, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Northlight Theatre, PCPA Theatrefest, Renaissance Theatreworks, Skylight Opera, and thirteen seasons as Resident Company Member with The Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

Denise Warner (Costume Designer - To Kill a Mockingbird | 14th Season) Denise is the Costume Manager and staff Costume Designer for Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Most recently, she acted as Costume Coordinator for Les Misérables. Coming to the Lowndes Shakespeare Center March 12-15, 2015

Leonard Nimoy’s Leonard Nimoy’s Vincent dramatizes the life of Vincent van Gogh in this intimate one-man play adapted from the actual letters between the artist and his brother, Theo. Vincent’s story is so much more than that of the misunderstood artist who cut off his own ear. His life was one of great passions, and even greater turmoil, ultimately ending in suicide one summer day in 1890. This play, however, is not about the demise of one man. It is about the meaning and significance of Vincent van Gogh’s life to all humankind. As seen through the eyes of Theo, Vincent lives on as a symbol of inspiration, courage, passion, and the lust for life that art kindles in all of us.

The performance runs 90 minutes and includes over 100 stunning projections of Vincent’s artwork. This production is presented by Starry Night Theater Company and performed by James Briggs, a graduate of Sarasota’s Asolo Conservatory of Professional Actor Training.

Performances of Vincent will take place at the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center’s Mandell Theater.
