Data: Output to reach $1.5 billion by 2020

Palm Coast generates $1.1 billion now, the least of all US metros. When Palm Coast’s population spike was documented by the 2010 census, the city gained a lofty distinction — it became an official U.S. metro area. But with that moniker comes some “percentage anomalies,” as Flagler County Communications Manager Carl Laundrie calls them. Palm Coast ranked

last among the 363 metro areas in terms of Gross Metro Product, or the market value in dollars of the goods and services produced by a city in a given year, according to data released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The city is growing, though, and on another list, this one

measuring expected seven-year economic growth among the same cities — and Palm Coast cracked the Top 10, at No. 9. The study predicts Palm Coast will see its GMP increase from $1.1 billion to $1.5 billion from now until 2020. That’s an annual in-

Family, friends celebrate legacy of Dr. Rick Doolin I’ve changed my perspective of God/Jesus over the years. First, He was vengeful. One cuss word, and I’m going to hell. Rick Doolin wrote those words during the final few weeks of his life. Confined to hospice care in his P-section home, Doolin, a popular professor of sciences at Daytona State College, drafted his own eulogy on Rick Doolin the backlit screen of a smartphone. He died early Sunday morning of pericardial mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. He was 43. Hundreds of friends, family and former students gathered Tuesday night at Palm Coast Community Church for a superhero-themed life celebration. The service sprinkled in clips from the 2009 “Star Trek” movie, one of Doolin’s favorite franchises. Will Wight, son of pastor Billy Wight, fondly remembers catching the flick with Doolin at a Jacksonville IMAX theater on opening night. When it came to the scene where Spock asks his dad why he married a human, receiving the reply “marrying your mother was logical,” Wight jokingly recalled, “Rick leaned over and said, ‘That’s what I

Candidates qualify for city, county, school elections Primary elections will be Aug. 26 for the Nov. 4 general election.

A total of 23 candidates for the School Board, the Flagler County Commission and the Palm Coast City Council have qualified for upcoming elections. Primaries will be held Aug. 26 for the partisan Flagler County Commission elections and for all races in which more than two candidates are competing for a seat, necessitating a run-off. Those include both Palm Coast City Council seats up for election — District 2 and District 4 — as well as the School Board race for District 2. General elections will be Nov. 4.

Because now, these boys will be able to know that and just grow

Two seats will be open for Palm Coast City Council elections this year. City Council elections are nonpartisan. Councilman David Ferguson, who represents District 2, announced Friday, June 20, that he will not seek a second term. (See palmcoastobserver.com for a story on Ferguson’s decision.) There are three candidates for the District 2 seat: Joel Rosen, Heidi Shipley and Anne-Marie Shaffer. The two with the most votes will face each other in November. Councilman Bill Lewis represents District 4 and will run against Woody Douge, Steven Nobile and Norman Weiskopf. The top two vote-getters in the August primary will run against each other in November.

movin’ out By Joey LoMonaco | Staff Writer

Pressure mounts for most City Marketplace tenants J.J. Graham and his gallery, Hollingsworth, won’t be moving to the A1A Center. The “dealbreaker” came when Graham learned the School Board wouldn’t allow him to serve wine during openings. But he can’t afford to remain at City Marketplace, either, since John C. Bills, the complex’s new landlord — want so much cheddar. “I feel compelled to say that a 300% increase in (Common Area Maintenance) charges, without allowing a tenant to exit the lease agreement if they can’t afford it, is unjust and places profit above good human conduct,” Graham wrote via text. Instead, Graham is currently negotiating a lease at NatureScapes for use of a 6000-squarefoot building. He wants to move to the spot, located off Old Brick Road in Bunnell, by September. The building “has 25-foot concrete block walls for him to hang his art on, blanketed under ancient oak trees,” said Marylou Baiata, the site’s owner. “It’s a sanctuary.” Meanwhile, Graham will continue to honor his unwritten rent agreement for Hollingsworth Gallery at City Marketplace, his business’s home for the past six years. He hopes that’s enough. “I’ll be sending them a rent check each month,” he said.

“My hope is that they cash it, and I don’t receive an eviction notice on my door.”

Sheriff’s Office says it’s ‘disappointed’ with City Marketplace agreement

John C. Bills wants the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, which has a substation at City Marketplace, to pay an additional $5,356.38 in back CAM fees for January through June, on top of the $420 it already paid during that period. A June 5 letter sent by Cypress Point LLC, a company Bills set up to manage the properties at City Marketplace, outlines the new rent agreement for the sheriff. Starting Aug. 1, the Sheriff’s Office will pay $1,622.25 in monthly rent, not including the CAM fees. Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Paula Priester said the sheriff is weighing options but hasn’t yet determined a plan. “This is all really new to us, and it looks like they’re going to start charging us on the next billing statement,” she said. But Sid Nowell, a Bunnell attorney who represents the Sheriff’s Office, hopes the two parties can go back to the bargaining table. “We were surprised and disappointed in the proposed increase and intend to discuss the matter further with the Landlord to see if a more rea-

PALM COAST NEGOTIATES CITY MARKETPLACE RENT CHANGE By Jonathan Simmons | News Editor The city of Palm Coast won’t have to move its offices to avoid a 57% rent increase proposed by its landlord at City Marketplace. Instead, Palm Coast has worked out an agreement for a one-year lease that will increase the city’s rent by 10%, from $20,000 per month to $22,000 per month, Palm Coast City Manager Jim Landon told City Council members at a June 24 workshop. Landon recommended the council approve the lease when a vote is held at an upcoming meeting. The new lease would give the city time to prepare for a move to its new City Hall in fall 2015, and means the city won’t have to move twice — an option the council was considering as a possibility if its current landlord, John C. Bills Properties, didn’t back down on the rent hike.

Councilman Jason DeLorenzo (right) said the city’s rent has varied over the years from $17,000 per month to $20,000 per month. The proposed 10% increase will place it at $22,000 per month.

The city will not be affected by a proposed 212% Common Area Maintenance fee increase affecting the Sheriff’s Office and other City Marketplace tenants, because the city pays a flat rate and has no CAM fees.

POOL PROBLEMS? By Joey LoMonaco | Staff Writer

Belle Terre swimmers worried about lack of morning lifeguard Linda Russell thought she heard a clap of thunder at the pool. Normally, that wouldn’t be a major event, but she felt the situation was complicated by the recent decision to reduce lifeguard staffing at Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club. Two Fridays ago, Russell’s Aqua Motion class was submerged for its morning session at the club. After a loud noise, someone emerged from the pool office and said the clamor was just a garbage truck, Russell recalled. But it became clear that a storm was approaching, and, soon, the roar of nearby thunder was distinct. Again, Russell said, someone came out of the pool office, and this time, the employee blew a whistle signaling members to get out of the pool. “But people still stayed in the water,” Russell said, “because they were just a person, they didn’t look official — and they weren’t a lifeguard.” Members said that for the last two weeks there has been no lifeguard on duty at Belle Terre from the pool’s 7 a.m. opening until 11 a.m. That time period is overwhelmingly reserved for swim classes with trained instructors, but

Joey LoMonaco

A blue sign at the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club shows that a lifeguard is on duty in the afternoon, but cost-cutting measures have reduced staffing, and no lifeguard is assigned in the mornings. anyone can still swim where there’s room. At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, a red sign reading “No Lifeguard on Duty” hung in clear view on a blue display board outside the pool. Two senior water aerobics classes comprised the majority of the 35 people in the water, but there were also a few lap swimmers in a ropedoff lane and a handful of children. The lifeguard chair was empty. The Flagler County School

Board operates Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club, and Superintendent Jacob Oliva said it’s currently addressing the recent departure of one of the pool’s full-time lifeguards. “There’s been a reduction in the number of members,” Oliva said. “So, we have to adjust our resources to meet the demand. We’re identifying the peak hours when we need to provide the most levels of services, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Some members don’t see it that way. “We understand wanting to cut corners, but not in the summer time,” said Barry Rosen. Rosen also said that there used to be two lifeguards in the afternoon, and now there’s only one. “If it was just us, I wouldn’t be worried,” said Julian Gill, a member of the Silver Sneakers class who has swum at Belle Terre for years. “But you look around, and there are some kids swimming.” The lack of a lifeguard in the mornings isn’t permanent, Oliva said. “I just talked to the pool (Monday) morning,” Oliva said, “and we’re looking at changing those hours and bringing lifeguards in at different times in the morning.” Russell said she has noticed other staffing cuts recently, like the attendant at the front gate to check members’ passes or collect money. “I worry that they’re going to close the pool, that’s my only concern,” Russell said. Gill said he and the other seniors depend on the pool to remain active. “We need this pool to stay alive, quite frankly,” he said.

INBRIEF + Slight rise from April unemployment rate Unemployment climbed from 8.3% to 8.6% from April to May, but this May’s rate still beats May 2013’s 10.1% rate. Flagler had the second highest rate of unemployment in the state, next to Hendry County’s 9.4%. Three industries that gained jobs in Flagler County over the year were leisure and hospitality (plus 300 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (plus 100 jobs); and mining, logging, and construction (plus 100 jobs). Government, and professional and business services lost 100 jobs each. The number of jobs in education and health services, other services, information, financial activities, and manufacturing were unchanged over the year. The state’s unemployment rate for May was 6.1%, also down from last May’s rate, which was 7.3%, according to data released from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The county with the lowest unemployment rate was Walton County, at 3.4%.

+ Thief on the run after stealing, crashing car A burglar entered a family’s home at night, grabbed their car keys from the dining room table, and drove off in their rental car. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at a reported crash site at the intersection of West Matanzas Woods Parkway and U.S. 1 Sunday morning and found an empty red Volkswagen Beetle sitting upside down on its roof, keys in the ignition and drops of blood on its shattered window. Tire tracks showed that the car, a rental owned by a company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, had barreled west through the U.S. 1 intersection, where it struck and mounted a median, then hit a palm tree and rolled over, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. When deputies searched it, they found a driver’s license and debit card bearing the name of a local woman: Janel Walker. A deputy drove out to Walker’s B-section house. But she had been asleep, and neither she nor her 15-year-old daughter had driven the car the previous night, they told deputies, or had any signs of having been in a car crash, according to the report. Whoever had crashed the Walkers’ rental car had done so after stealing the keys from their dining room table. There were clues: A rear sliding door was open about an inch, and two lights in the house that Walker said had been off when she went to sleep had been turned on by an intruder. Walker’s daughter told a deputy that sometime during the night, someone had opened her bedroom door and left it slightly ajar. She thought it was her mother, and went back to sleep, according to the report. A deputy checked the items the thief had touched for fingerprints, but did not find any. The deputy took touch DNA samples from the table where the keys had rested and from a light switch the thief had turned on. Walker and her daughter both gave DNA samples, and deputies will submit the blood from the crash site for testing.

Although Doolin was well schooled, earning his doctorate, those who knew him say you wouldn’t get a hint of his lofty credentials from attending a lecture or sitting in on an anatomy class. He kept his content relatable and entertaining. “He knew how to get the lesson through to us,” said student Diana Johns. “I remember on the final he would ask questions referring to Speed Racer (a cartoon) — and that was the correct answer on a final exam.” Doolin wasn’t purely a bookworm, either. Friends noted his penchant for vintage cars and his prowess as a bodybuilder. “I remember Rick being back in the children’s rooms at the church, and he’d have his arms out, and the kids would hang off his arms,” Crayton McBride said. “It was the coolest thing for the kids to have this statue of a man be so kind, just because he loves them.” The turnout for Tuesday’s celebration was touching for Stacey Doolin, but not terribly unexpected. crease of 4.3%. “When we talk about (GMP), we’re talking about where we are now,” said Joe Roy, who manages Palm Coast’s Business Assistance Center. “Economic development is concerned with where we’re going. We’re talking about a community raising the lifestyle and making sure that everybody participates. People gravitate toward cities that are environmentally sound, well-managed and where housing’s affordable.” Much of that growth, Roy said, depends on sound city planning and business development and innovation. “It’s actually the way the city was outlined in Prosperity 2021,” Roy said, referring to Palm Coast’s economic development plan. “How do you grow a community in an economy that’s changing? From a planner’s perspective, what’s the world going to look like? What Palm Coast can offer is a quality of life and a business culture that will encourage innovation.” Roy added that businesses will be drawn to the area because of the support they’ll find here. The breakthrough might come with “small businesses that come up with identifying products or service to

The Flagler County School Board has three members up for re-election. School Board races are nonpartisan. Andy Dance, who represents District 1, will be challenged by Maria Barbosa in August. The candidate with the most votes will take the seat. Trevor Tucker represents District 4 and will be challenged by Michael McElroy in August. Palm Coast currently accounts for 0.2% of Florida’s Gross State Product. “According to the report, metropolitan areas play a critical role in the recovery of our nation’s economy,” van Eckert wrote via email. “While Palm Coast is not a major metropolitan area in terms of size, it is a very positive sign that we are in the top ten of projected percent growth over the next six years. LETTERS EDITOR TO THE

+ Beware to all who live near the proposed gas station on Pine Lakes Parkway Dear Editor: It might be too late, but ask us about a new gas station on your street. We on Palm Harbor Parkway can tell you that we live in hell with the BP station. The mayor’s assessment of “minimal impact” may only have addressed the transient traffic. Yes! We do live with the transient motorcycles, the gas trucks, the dump trucks at 7:30 a.m., but your nightmare will come from the local teenage population. In our case, we have a “drag strip” between Matanzas High School and the BP Station. Why does any youngster need to visit a gas station 6-7 times in one day? They don’t seem to buy gas each time. They will race their engines just sitting there and do “wheelies” out of the station (never a police presence). The “minimum impact” has reduced our property value! We would like to sell, but we couldn’t lie on the “disclosure form.” Art Contour Palm Coast Editor’s Note: The prospect of a gas station at Pine Lakes Parkway and Wynnfield Drive was last discussed by the City Council in February. Since then, according to city spokeswoman Cindi Lane, the applicant has resubmitted plans and materials. After review, the city will either issue additional comments or approve the development order so that the applicant may move forward with obtaining building permits.

+ Ronald Reagan candidates

seek gain, not public safety

Dear Editor: Local Ronald Reagan Assembly candidates for City Council have quickly jumped on the red light camera (bandwagon) issue. Both seemingly want voters to believe they will lead the charge on ending the camera program and repaying fines issued from 2007 to 2010. They say the red light cameras are a scheme for the city to make money, and that the city should apologize to everyone who was fined before 2010. Here’s the problem I have with all of this: The fines are a result of people running red lights. There is a reason we have red lights, and that is to help ensure the safety of people on the road. In fact, according to a quote from the city manager in a May 7 article in the Palm Coast Observer, the city averages over 2,200 citations each year. There are thousands and thousands of incidents in which people are running red lights and putting others in grave danger. What is absolutely appalling about these candidates and their positions on this matter is they never mention safety or offer any plan for creating safer roads. They simply complain about the system that tries to address the very real and serious issue. What about the husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and friends who have been injured and killed in accidents? What about those who have been inconvenienced and suffered from expenses due to accidents as a result of those running red lights? According to these candidates, the violators are the victims. They insist we apologize to those who ran the lights, citing the court’s opinion that the use of the cameras from 2007 to 2010 was “illegal”! So, does the act of illegally running a red light become legal because of the court’s ruling on the method of catching the person during that time? If the system of monitoring the intersections is the issue, then what is the alternative? The drivers in our city continue to show there is need to monitor the intersections, so should we increase deputies stationed at the lights? Well, that costs money because of the manhours involved. How do we pay for and coordinate that with the sheriff? The bottom line is that running red

lights in our city is a problem, and these candidates have shown they do not want to acknowledge the real problem or offer any real solutions. I applaud our city manager, mayor and City Council who have had heart and courage enough to address this issue in our city and to care enough about safety to seek out solutions. What we cannot afford in our city are potential leaders and radical political groups in pursuit of power and control who sacrifice public safety for their own selfish popularity. We need leaders who have sense enough to identify the real problems. We need leaders with the courage to stand up for the real victims and solutions even when they may not seem popular. We certainly do not need to vote for candidates that perversely suggest we should apologize to anyone who acts in such a way that it puts others in harm’s way

IN THE CATS’ DEFENSE … + Solution to overpopulation of cats: trap, neuter, return Dear Editor: Regarding the letter about feral cats in your June 19 edition, Community Cats of Palm Coast would like to respond. We all agree that our city has too many feral cats. Where do these cats come from? Some are abandoned pets and their offspring. Many are the result of unsterilized domestic cats being allowed to roam. While we need to address the root causes of the problem, our goal is to reduce the feral cat population. In a misguided attempt to do this, the city continually traps cats. Many that are too feral for adoption are euthanized. What we have is an endless cycle of trap and kill. It is inhumane, expensive and, ultimately, ineffective. Cats reproduce too quickly, and new cats move into areas where other cats have been removed. The alternative is trap, neuter and return. With this well-established protocol, cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, given a rabies shot and released. As the cats stop reproducing, the number of feral cats in the community declines, reducing animal control costs and shelter intake fees. The benefits of TNR increase over time. Municipalities with proactive leadership, including Jacksonville, Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach, Flagler Beach, Holly Hill and DeLand, are noting the success of TNR programs and embracing this approach. Our local animal welfare community is united in its support for TNR. Let’s put an end to trap and kill in Palm Coast. It’s not who we are, and it’s not who we want to be. Elizabeth Robinson Director, Community Cats of Palm Coast

+ Humans, not cats, are worst

threat to native species

Dear Editor: I do not support or oppose the actions of the Community Cats of Palm Coast organization. My point in this letter is to the ignorance of Mr. Robertson. The No. 1 threat to wildlife (native species) is humans: habitat destruction, industrial and residential development of land, logging, crop farming, livestock grazing, mining, roads and dam building, pesticide use and oil spills. Opponents of trap-neuter-return often blame cats for bird species’ decline, but humans are by far the biggest threat to bird species, lizards, frogs, squirrels, etc. The exponential popula-

regardless of how they were “caught” and were then held accountable. Vote for the best interest of our city and county in August and November. And no matter what your opinion, go to the polls and vote. Brad West Palm Coast Send letters to editor@palmcoastobserver.com. tion growth and vast expansion have left little land untouched by human development, modification, fragmentation and pollution for these species. Birds, for example, collide with windows from tall buildings and store fronts, have collisions with automobiles or planes, and are exposed to pesticides and oil spills. Cats have always been part of the natural environment; they have lived outdoors for years. People’s unrestrained use of natural resources is what has damaged the crucial habitats and resources species needed to survive — that includes cats also. Here’s an idea for you, Mr. Robertson: Promote high-volume, low-cost spay or neuter for these felines, and that would help with the overpopulation issues, like there is at present. Instead of pointing a finger at these feral cats, try getting involved and doing something productive for the “Murderous Cats of Palm Coast,” as you call them. Mari Molina Executive director, Flagler Cats

+ Feral cats exert no more

influence than hawks, bobcats Dear Editor: It’s always amusing to learn what people think of themselves. Such is the situation with the selfdescribed animal lover’s letter to the editor about feral cats. Trapping feral cats, shipping them to the Everglades, and then feeding them to snakes is not what animal lovers do. People who care about feral cats know that trap-neuter-return programs are extremely successful in controlling the numbers of feral cat populations and are the only humane way to treat these poor creatures that have been dumped on the streets by people (See ASPCA.org.). The letter writer has feral cats mixed up with family kitties that people make the mistake of letting out of the house at night to roam. They are the ones that leave the carcasses this person finds “every” day. On the contrary, feral cats consume all of their prey in a safe, hidden, place. My observations of three years of daily care of a feral colony tell me that they exert no more influence on the local animal populations then the other predators such as hawks, owls, crows, bobcats, etc. I have conducted research at Everglades National Park; I have a masters degree in wildlife biology and over 40 years experience in the natural resources. The letter writer would be wise next time to go to the library and get a book or do online research on the subject. Perhaps that way, when the mouth is opened, the foot won’t go in as it did here. ‘Generating’ some crime 10:30 a.m. Interstate 95 Palm Coast Parkway overpass. Larceny.. A project manager working on the Palm Coast Parkway bridge over Interstate 95 got to work with a construction crew June 16, set up a generator, and then found that it was missing a few hours later. The crew had placed the generator at the top of the bridge by a barrier wall at about 7 a.m., according to a deputy’s report. They didn’t notice anyone suspicious approach it while they were working, but by 9:30 a.m. it was gone, and a deputy wrote in a report that it “appeared that the generator was wheeled down to the bottom of the bridge and then possibly placed in a vehicle.” The generator was a rental worth about $1,000. The project manager told the rental company about the theft, and the deputy uploaded a description of the generator, along with its serial number, to a crime database.

June 17

Smashed in or smashed out? 4:25 a.m. First block of Burnside Drive. Larceny, motor vehicle. A woman called deputies saying that she was sitting in her kitchen when she heard her car alarm go off. She said she ran outside and saw that someone had smashed a window and taken her empty computer bag. But a deputy investigating the crime thought that explanation didn’t add up: It looked like the window was smashed out from the inside. The deputy wrote that the window of

the woman’s white Cadillac was shattered but intact. There was still dew on the outside of the window, and it didn’t’ look like someone could have climbed in through the shattered window because of the way the glass remained attached. The deputy thought someone may have unlocked the door through the open window. The deputy tested it, and the alarm sounded. The deputy wrote that “the incident is suspicious and suspect information is unknown.”

June 17

Jeep joyride 7:11 a.m. First block of Burning View Lane. Stolen vehicle. A young man left a Jeep Grand Cherokee — unlocked with the keys in the cup holder — in his driveway June 16 and walked outside the next morning to find it gone. His sister drove by the house at about 5 a.m. and didn’t see the Jeep there. The family called the Sheriff’s Office, and when a deputy entered the tag number into a crime database, he found that someone else had seen the SUV that morning — careening north on Interstate 95 in Duval County — and called the police to report the driver as reckless. The caller hadn’t been able to see the driver well because of the car’s window tint. Deputies en-

tered the car into a crime database and advised other northern Florida counties to be on the lookout for it.

June 17

You’ve got mail! Or not ... 12 p.m. First block of Foxhill Lane. Theft. A 92-year-old woman went outside her home one morning and found that her mailbox was gone. The mailbox — black metal, with a hand-painted white handle — was worth about $20. The woman didn’t remember if the house number was printed on it. A deputy searched the area but didn’t find any suspicious people toting a mailbox.

June 19

Hopping mad 2:50 a.m. First block of Patric Drive. Felony criminal mischief. A man was inside his house with a woman when the two heard “loud crashing noises” outside

the home, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The man walked outside and saw a 22-year-old man in his driveway. He told the man to get away from the house. Instead, the young man took a swing at him. The victim tackled and pinned the attacker, and told him to calm down. When he let the young man get up, the young man got on a red m o t o rc yc l e and pulled away, saying he’d done something — exactly what he said he did is redacted in a deputy’s report — to the victim’s car. The victim went over to his car and found it “severely damaged,” according to the report, and called the Sheriff’s Office, and wanted to pursue charges. The deputy wrote that the car had “multiple scratches, a dented roof that appears to have been stomped in and a slashed right rear tire,” and that the damage would cost thousands of dollars to repair. The woman who was at the house said she knew the attacker. He was staying at her grandmother’s house and had sent her a text message before he showed up and trashed the car owned by the man she was with, according to the report. He also broke the driver’s side mirror off her car and left it sitting on the roof. She didn’t want to pursue charges. Deputies found the young man at his parents’ house. The red motorcycle was parked against the garage, and warm to the touch. They arrested him on a charge of felony criminal mischief.

these attractions by marketing them on a social network, a site that is popular with many people. Palm Coast will also organize a Make Our Town Beautiful Day to encourage citizens to plant trees, flowers, and clean up litter. We might also hold an annual Flower Festival to raise funds for renovations to the town. My second objective is to boost employment. My efforts to increase tourism will contribute to this goal. The other reason I will increase jobs is to reduce foreclosed properties, which make the town less attractive to tourists. I will propose to the city council to impose fines on banks if they neglect the foreclosed homes in our town. Mayors cannot solve all of the town’s problems by themselves! There are so many things I could think of to do if I was mayor. Above all, I believe that the key to making a better place is to make sure the citizens feel safe.

If I were elected mayor, I would make my town a better place to live by focusing on tourism and increasing jobs. I will present some of my ideas on how I would achieve these goals. First, I will meet with my city council to agree on a new budget that includes money to promote tourism. We will advertise our town’s positive attributes. This will attract more tourists and further increase tax revenue. There are many historic and natural attractions in Flagler County, where I live. I would advertise

First place went to Shelby Anton, of Palm Coast, who attends Indian Trails Middle School, and third place went to Julie Derienzo, an Ormond Beach Middle School student. The contest is run by the Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Mayors to promote civic education. The winners received certificates, gift cards and proclamations read at city council meetings. First-place winner Anton also will get the privilege of serving as “mayor for a day,” according to League of Mayors spokeswoman Jennifer Anderson. In this first year of the contest, the students submitted 250-word essays, on what they would do if they were elected mayor of their cities. Shelby received her proclamation in Destin on June 23 where they have relatives.

BRIDGING THE GAP By Jonathan Simmons | News Editor

Club raises money for Alzheimer’s Association All in the cards: Last year, the American Contract Bridge League raised about $575,000. This year, the Palm Coast Duplicate Bridge Club pitched in, raising about $3,500.

Flagler Palm Coast High School bridge team coach Per Berg and students Michael Fitzpatrick (left) and Brandon Flaschner played bridge at the Longest Day event at the St. Mark By the Sea Lutheran Church.

For 98-year-old Mitchell Dibbs, who showed up at the Palm Coast Duplicate Bridge Club’s Longest Day Alzheimer’s awareness fundraiser Saturday, no game is as engaging as duplicate bridge. “I used to play poker, but after I got into duplicate bridge, no game was ever as interesting,” he said. Dibbs said he feels the game helps keeps him sharp. He’s been playing for

about 50 years. Intellectually challenging games like bridge, some experts say, help to stave off age-related conditions like dementia. That’s one reason the American Contract Bridge League started the participating in the American Alzheimer’s Association’s Longest Day fundraiser last year, holding tournaments to benefit the association. Last year, the ACBL raised about $575,000 through about 160 clubs nationwide, Palm Coast Duplicate Bridge Club Longest Day organizer Patrick Heading said. This year, the Palm Coast Duplicate Bridge Club decided to pitch in, holding an all-day series of bridge tournaments, soliciting donations and corporate sponsorships and holding a silent auction. About 100 people showed up for the first of the day’s three tournaments, volunteer Sylvia Diane Caviggia said, and more came in throughout the day. The club has about 300 members, and the event raised about $3,500, she said. For some members, like Dibbs, the club is like a second home. “It’s the sociability of it; it’s a social game to me,” he said. “I’m not interested in making points or anything like that, but if I enjoy playing with a person, it doesn’t matter if they win or lose.” Bridge can be a close community. Dibbs arrived in Palm Coast years ago, joined the bridge club, and found member Mike Dalton, 65, who he’d played with decades ago at a bridge club in Brooklyn, New York. But it’s a game for all ages. Michael Fitzpatrick, 16, and a member of Flagler Palm Coast High School’s bridge team, showed up at Longest Day with his bridge instructor, Spanish teacher Per Berg, and his teammates. “It’s just a fun card game, and I like card games,” he said. The FPC team competed in nation al competitions last year in Atlanta, and will go to Las Vegas this coming year, Berg said. The same aspects of the game that make it great for older folks also make it a good game for sharp kids looking for a new way to use their heads, he said. “I teach IB, and it’s a complicated game,” he said. “So I get a lot of really bright kids, and it’s a good challenge for them.” For more information on the game of bridge or the ACBL, visit acbl.org. Brazilian pepper

THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014

The Brazilian pepper is an invasive species that harms native Florida plants and wildlife. It grows and reproduces quickly, replacing native habitat. But before removing a plant, check to make sure there aren’t any active bird nests within it. Nests are protected under state and federal law. For more information on the Brazilian pepper and how to get rid of it, visit the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences’ guide to the plant, at edis.ifas.ufl.edu/aa219.

University of Florida

+ City of Flagler Beach offers area to drop off Brazilian pepper plants Flagler Beach residents who would like to remove invasive Brazilian pepper plants from the properties can bring the plants to a drop-off location on South Flagler Avenue between the police station and the water tank from July to September. The city is offering the dropoff location for Brazilian pepper plants only, and only to Flagler Beach residents, according to a city of Flagler Beach news release.

The scammers have told residents they must pay the debt immediately by a wire transfer or prepaid debit card. When victims refuse to cooperate, according to the news release, the scammers become hostile and threaten to have them arrested or have their driver’s license revoked. Sometimes the scammers use fake names and badge numbers. They sometimes know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security number, and can even trick the victim’s caller ID into indicating the call is coming from the IRS or some other agency. Here’s what you should do, according to the release, if you get a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS: If you know you owe taxes or think you might, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know or believe that you don’t owe any taxes, report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484. If you have been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. For more, visit irs.gov.

+ Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam Scammers pretending to be IRS agents have been calling local residents, demanding money and claiming law enforcement action would be taken if victims don’t hand it over, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. “This is one of hundreds of scams we deal with on a regular basis,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said in the news release. “We want the public to be aware of this scam and remember not to give money or information to anyone over the phone or on the Internet.”

+ Cut Up and Sew gains instructor Cut Up and Sew has hired a new sewing instructor who opened her own shop in Trinidad at age 23 and later sewed for the New York Metropolitan Opera. “I am very excited to be working at Cut Up and Sew and teaching a sewing class called Sewing with Gloria,” teacher Gloria Brathwaite said in a Cut Up and Sew press release. “Sewing is a skill that stays with you for life, and I want to help people sharpen their skills in

any way I can.” Brathwaite owned her own dressmaking shop in Trinidad when she was just 23, then moved to New York City in 1969, where she designed and sewed for the New York Metropolitan Opera, according to the release. That gave her experience in designing and sewing formal wear. She moved to Palm Coast in 1995, branching out into home decoration by working with interior designer Beth MacKinnon while also doing alterations for Bealls, according to the press release. She taught at Flagler Adult Education for almost nine years and opened the “Sew Glo” sewing shop on Old Kings Road in 2000. Brathwaite’s class is held 5-9 p.m. Mondays and on Tuesday afternoons. Cut Up and Sew is located at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Unit D116. For more information, call 447-1103 or visit cutupandsew.com.

THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014

easy rider By Joey LoMonaco | Sports Writer

ESPN gives s/o to PC Bam. About 40 minutes into USA’s World Cup match with Portugal on Sunday — and we have a Palm Coast reference. “Jozy Altidore’s the only player on the roster without a replacement,” ESPN’s Taylor Twellman said. “J u r g e n Klinsmann could’ve chosen Eddie Johnson, but he didn’t,” playby-play man Ian Darke fired right back. Last weekJOEY end, I sat on a LoMONACO couch inside Lewanna Johnson’s modest R-section home, hoping to put together a hometown angle about her son Eddie’s exclusion from the U.S. Men’s National Team roster, a development that caught many in the soccer world by surprise. The story never materialized. Eddie Johnson was down in Miami, catching a couple nights of the NBA Finals. “I didn’t even want to watch it at first,” Lewanna, my two-doorsdown neighbor, said, referring to this year’s World Cup. That’s understandable. My dad still roots against University of Virginia sports teams because the school waitlisted me. A 2005 Sports Illustrated article talks up a 21-year-old Eddie Johnson as the next big thing in U.S. soccer, describes his childhood home in Bunnell as a “crime-infested housing project,” and describes how he picked up soccer in a Flagler County rec league. “Adds 23-year-old U.S. captain Landon Donovan,” reads the article, “‘One of Eddie’s best attributes is that he wants to get better and learn. He has every talent and skill available to him.’” When I told Lewanna Johnson that I was also surprised Donovan wasn’t headed to Brazil, she wasn’t. “We’ll see Monday (of the Ghana game) if this coach knows what he’s doing,” Johnson said. Late in the first half Sunday, the naysayers (and not just scorned moms) were out in full voice. Our Delaware-crossing, Nazi-headbutting, not-currently-winning 11 appeared all out of sorts. Portugal’s first tally, a Nani strike at the 5’’ mark, was basically an own goal. Geoff Cameron’s clearance attempt was about as precise as a Columbus-era musket. And it backfired. But two American goals in the second half, spearheaded by burgeoning heroes, guys named Clint, Jermaine and Graham, gave the good guys a 2-1 lead heading into the final 15 seconds of injury time. Knockout round, here we come. And then, Ronaldo struck. A 2-2 draw. One measly point instead of three. But still, a foothold in Group G, heading into today’s match with Germany.

Sean Walker rocks the Graham Swamp leg of the 6 Legged Monster Bike race.

Bike Mike: Unklesbay among winners at 6 Legged Monster Flagler Area Biking hosted the event, which spanned 70 miles and drew 54 riders. Mike Unklesbay’s first mountain bike came from Toys “R” Us, and looking back, it left something to be desired. “It was really a piece of crap,” said Unklesbay, who won Sunday’s 6 Legged Monster Bike Race as a solo rider. “But I thought I had the best bike in the world, and nobody could tell me any different.” Flagler Area Biking put on the first-year event, which drew 54 riders. The “six legs” were split into three road portions and three trail portions totaling 70 miles and spanning from Bing’s Landing in the Hammock to Moses Creek Trail in St. Augustine. Participants could elect to tackle the course in two-person teams or go it alone. Unklesbay, 41, did it solo. The Port Orange resident, who is a fixture in the Flagler races and has family in Palm Coast, got into competitive racing completely by accident six years ago, when he rode Graham Swamp Trail for the first time. When “I went out to my first trail, I’d never been mountain biking before, and I thought I was awesome,” Unkles-

bay said. “But you start meeting people and talking to them, and you realize — I am terrible. These guys are fast. They’re good, and they’re strong. But I’d pick the next fastest rider and try to get as fast as him. Once I’d beat him, I’d pick the next guy. Over the course of six years, I never planned anything. I was just trying to catch up to the next fastest rider.” There aren’t too many riders left to pass. In April, Unklesbay set a Guinness World Record by racing for 24 hours straight on Daytona Beach. He pedaled for 283.38 miles in the sand and has the certificate to prove it. Even with that endurance background, “Monster’s” course was challenging for Unklesbay, who used a couple of the top teams to pace himself. “It was hard from the beginning,” he said. “Being solo, I tried to tag along with some teams, and the team guys (there were two of them), were so strong, it was very hard for me as a solo rider to hold on. The entire race was strenuous.”

boyfriend, Marc Macaluso, had an understanding. Tackling the Monster in a coed relay team, she’d handle the road legs, and he’d take the trails. The dynamic started off well, but as in any relationship, problems arose. In Sunday’s race, the difficulties came during the final portion at Mala Compra Trail. “It was good until he didn’t show up for my exchange!” Shawah said. Macaluso was quick to explain. “The first two (relay handoffs) went off with-

memorable outing By Joey LoMonaco | Sports Writer

How low can you go? Third-generation Palm Coaster Brian Sheekey shoots a 32 on the back at Grand Haven. Brian Sheekey’s father (also named Brian Sheekey) texted him Saturday to touch base and remind him that his mother was baking lasagna for Father’s Day. The younger Sheekey said his dad’s not prone to sentimentality, but he made one request of his namesake, who’s a 2-handicapper in golf. “He said, ‘Hey, how about a good round of golf for Dad’s Day tomorrow?,’” Sheekey, 34, recalled. Sheekey shot better than good Sunday, posting a career-low ninehole score of 32 on the back at Grand Haven. “I felt good all day,” he said. “Outside of a few wayward drives on the front nine, I would’ve shot even par or maybe even 1-under (going out).” Sheekey shot even par 72 on the day, hurt by a double-bogey six on No. 6. After the turn, though, he kicked his game into high gear. On the 372-yard 10th hole, he smacked a 3-iron off the tee, knocked it close with a wedge then drained a 6-foot birdie putt. Heading into the final hole, a 525-yard Par-5, Sheekey stood at 4-under. It was uncharted territory. “A lot of thoughts crossed my mind in 60 seconds,” he said. A few were flickering snapshots of his upbringing in the sport — long, hot days spent with his grandfather playing in the Knights of Colum-

bus League at Pine Lakes. From the time Sheekey, a third-generation Palm Coast resident, picked up a club at 13, he could mash the ball. His second shot left him just short of the green. He had a choice to make — throw his approach shot high into the air and try to spin it within a few feet, or pitch it more conventionally — a safer shot. He opted for the latter and flew it 18feet past the pin. Still, Sheekey could two-putt for his 32, a career low. But after an anemic first putt left him with seven-feet to negotiate, the prospect of saving par became a shaky one. “I made a remark about that first putt that you probably can’t put in the newspaper,” he said. Potential expletives yielded to relief when he sank the par putt. If Sheekey had missed the putt, “it would have ruined a really good day,” said Lou Paolucci, who played in Sheekey’s foursome. “It would’ve been a major disappointment, but he made the putt and it wasn’t.” At the family gathering later that afternoon, Sheekey relayed his news in his “inimitable” fashion, Sheekey Sr. said, and father and son cherished the moment. “Being from an athletic family, those kinds of achievements are big,” Brian Sr. said. “It was the best Father’s Day gift I could’ve got. It’s like pitching a no-hitter. He did something extraordinary.”

BIKE / FROM PAGE 13 out a hitch,” he said. “On the third one, I guess I underestimated how fast she actually is. She killed it, and I wasn’t there on time. She killed it, and I had a horrible lap.” Still, the Palm Coast couple finished in first place among the four coed pairs who participated. Bike racing makes a fitting date, considering how the pair met. “It was a group ride out of the Bicycle Doctor (in Bunnell),” Macaluso recalled. “On one of the Tuesday nights, Alana just showed up. I was doing it here and there, and Alana showed up, and it was the first time we met.”

Need for two-axle speed

The Monster’s 53 miles of sprawling pavement weren’t challenging enough for Jacob Godfrey.

He raced with a fixed-gear bike — and without gears, brakes or the ability to coast. Godfrey rode with friend John Randolph for “Team Tigerpaw” to promote their startup video production company. “I thought it’d be a great challenge,” Godfrey said, “and doing it on my fixedgear bike was even more of a challenge. It was something of a personal goal.” The Monster wasn’t as treacherous as his usual cycling scene: Jacksonville’s underground world of Alleycat racing. They’re “illegal, unsanctioned races, where we race from checkpoint to checkpoint through rushhour traffic,” Godfrey explained. “It’s a lot of fun.” Email Joey LoMonaco at joey@palmcoastobserver. com.

Maria Pugliese and her teammate, Herbert Bridwell, places third among co-ed teams.

Roger Phillips walks his road bike down a jump in the Graham Swamp trail. He rode the entire 70 miles by himself.

Teammates Brian Bernsten and Stephen Gaddis make the exchange after the Graham Swamp trail leg.

Marc Macalusa and his teammate Alana Shwah placed second for co-ed teams.

Jim Miller’s Big Band America plays at a previous concert at the Performing Arts Center.

Conductor Jim Miller led the Jimmy Dorsey band for 13 years.

T

he rich tones of saxophones, cool notes of trombones and stirring sounds of trumpets echoed in the Ormond Beach Senior Center one recent evening as Jim Miller’s Big Band America prepared for their Summer Concert at the Performing Arts Center on June 29. The music from America’s “greatest generation” is played by all ages. “It’s classic American music,” said trombonist Charles Tollios, a Seabreeze High School graduate now attending Daytona State College. “It’s Americana.” Although “big bands” were popular many years before Tollios was born, he enjoys playing the songs. “Music is my passion,” he said. “I play any genre.” Two other young men, James Stup and Chris Barber, who attend Matanzas High School, both play saxophone in the band. “It has all the basics of today’s music,” Barber said. Stup added that it’s an opportunity to get together with others who enjoy music. There are all ages in the band, and some are still working while others are retired. But they have one thing in common: the love of music. There are 16 musicians in the band, just like the big bands in the 1940s. “I wouldn’t take less than 16 members,” said Jim Miller, 78, the band leader. Miller, of Palm Coast, spent 13 years leading the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra beginning in 1990, so he knows what a big band should sound like. Before that, he was a musician in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, where he had the opportunity to play for five presidents, providing music at receptions. When he got out of the Navy in 1979,

There are 16 musicians in the band, just like the big bands of the 1940s. he went to work as road manager for the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra, which was being directed by long-time family friend Les Castle. He took over as director in 1990 when Castle died. “I’ve had a wonderful career,” he said. Music has been his livelihood for his entire life, and he has played all over the world. “People say, ‘What a wonderful life, you see all these places,’” he said. “It’s wonderful until you live on a bus.” He said touring is rough, but it was all worthwhile when he got to play. “That night when you walk on stage, you may be hungry, and you may need a shave, but you forget all that,” he said. “It’s just you, the audience and the music. It’s just in your blood. You enjoy it.” Miller was born in Hollywood, Califor-

nia, to parents who were musicians in the movie studio orchestras. He said audiences today still enjoy the music from the big band era. “It started right here in the United States,” he said. “It’s good to listen to and good to dance to.” While they play the music of the 1940s, he said most is rewritten to keep it fresh. Miller had to quit the Dorsey orchestra in 2003 after a boating accident made it difficult to travel. He formed the current band about three years ago. He said they mostly do one-night shows but will occasionally travel down the coast for two or three days. “I have no desire to take the band on the road,” he said.
