Mayor Ed Kelley reads Tomoka Elementary Students a Dr. Suess classic.
The Cat in The Hat, Thing One and Thing Two were hanging out at Tomoka Elementary School March 2 in honor of America Reads Day and Dr. Suess’s birthday. Michelle Hall, library and media specialist, invited local 11 community members including Mayor Ed Kelley and former mayor, Carl Persis. “The National Education Association are the ones that sponsor it,” Hall said. “It’s an awesome event, because it promotes literacy, and the joy of reading.” Kelley read “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” to the students, and talked about what the book meant to him. “Maybe you made a choice that wasn’t the best,” Kelley said. “Like choosing to go to the University of Florida over Florida State. But one of the things I like about Dr. Suess’ books is that they all have things you can learn from.” He then told the kids a story about his son, Brian Kelley, who is a member of the famous country duo, Florida Georgia Line. “His goal in life was to play baseball,” Kelley said. “He went to Florida State for two years and didn’t get to play but two games. At the same time he was writing music. I get an email from him that said ‘Dad, I just wrote the best song ever.’ I asked him where and he said math class. So the two years he spent not playing baseball made him look at something else in life.”

Former Beach Bucket manager opens grill Located in Daytona Beach, the riverfront grill counts down to the sunset every evening. Usually, countdowns are saved for annual events like New Year’s Eve, but at Sunsetters Riverfront Bar and Grille, every day is worth celebrating. Meghan Anderson, of Ormond Beach, opened the riverfront restaurant in Daytona Beach on March 1 to an unexpectedly large crowd. “We were blown away by the amount of business and turnout that we had,” her husband, Ian Anderson, said. “It really goes to show you how social media and word of mouth works.” The grille’s first patrons were

Ormond-grown family battles MS with a smile Community figure Ty Wilson keeps a positive attitude through his debilitating illness. Tyra Roberson remembers the first time she saw her father limp. He was her softball coach, just one of the dozens of hats he wore during her childhood, and she noticed a slight change in his walk as he made his way across the field to third base. She didn’t know it at the time, but it was the first sign of his multiple sclerosis. “He always did everything
sports,” Roberson said. “He still did everything he could throughout our lives. It never slowed him down in terms of him going after life.” Tyra Roberson’s sister, Jenna Pender, said the moment that stands out in her life, is when her father told them he had the disease. She and Roberson were teenagers, lying on their beds
and discussing the most important issue at the time: what they were going to do tonight. “He was never really forthcoming with what he had,” Pender said. “My dad came in the room, shut the door and I was like, ‘Dad, we haven’t even done anything yet.’” He leaned against their desk, and told them about the disease that would slowly take his life. But their lives were also changed.

Fire tax Ormond impact?
Halifax Health-Hospice has a goal to serve the mind, body and spirit.

Joanne Fischette, of Port Orange, and Renae Leveille, of Ormond Beach, walk the labyrinth after the ribbon cutting at the new hospice. Fran Davis, executive director of Halifax Health-Hospice, found that she needed the services of hospice herself last November when her father died. It gave her a renewed insight into the importance of hospice care as a person enters the final stage of their life, she said. With hospice, the family didn’t have to worry about his physical care, such as what pills he needed. They knew he was comfortable. “I needed to be a daughter,” she said. “My sister and I were able to hold him in our arms. It was a moment I’ll never forget.” She said it was a “good death,” and that’s the goal for patients at the hospice facilities she oversees, including the one soon to open on Booth Road in Ormond Beach. There was a ribbon cutting on Feb. 26, and the 12-bed facility will be in operation in the next few weeks, as soon as state officials inspect the premises and issue a license. Davis said there are five patients, currently at the Halifax Health 16-bed Port Orange facility, who will be able to move into the new facility to be closer to their home.
Dying is a spiritual journey. It’s not a medical event. — Fran Davis, executive director, Halifax Health-Hospice In addition to Ormond and Port Orange, there are two other Halifax Health Hospices: a 12bed unit in Edgewater and an 18-bed hospice in West Volusia. They are spread around the geographic area so they are convenient for patients and family. Hospice is for those who have been diagnosed by a physician as having a life-limiting illness. It involves care by a nurse, social worker and chaplain at home, or at a hospice facility when necessary. The Ormond Beach facility has a noninstitutional, homelike decor, with features such as patios and beds for family members so they can spend the night. Actual artifacts from the old Ormond Hotel, donated by the Halifax Historical Society, are incorporated into the design to reflect the community.
“It’s very important they feel at home,” Davis said. “Dying is a spiritual journey. It’s not a medical event. When a person is born it’s a cherished moment. We want to make death a cherished moment as well.” To help pay for the facility, naming rights are being sold for fountains, rooms, suites, benches, etc. She said their goal is $2.5 million and they have raised $2.3 million. Halifax Health-Hospice depends on donations, because they have many costs that are not compensated, such as care for the uninsured, household support, bereavement programs, caregiver programs, etc. The cost of construction of the 18,000-square-foot building was $5 million. The grounds are park-like, with walkways, benches, and a labyrinth offering a place for re-
flextion and meditation. Labyrinths are well-known in hospice care, according to Robin Finkelstein, interim director of business development of Halifax Health-Hospice. They are found at conventions of hospice workers, and all of the staff at Halifax Health-Hospice knows how to instruct others on their use. For example, a bereavement counselor will sometimes have a client walk the labyrinth and think about a happy memory with their loved one. Or, a caregiver might want to focus on what they should do to give their loved one a better quality of life. Sometimes, a patient may go through the labyrinth, even if pushed in a wheelchair, to process thoughts, such as forgiving someone. “Hospice serves the mind, body and spirit,” Finkelstein said. The opening of the new facility also included an ecumenical blessing. There were 12 clergy from throughout the area, as well as chaplains from Halifax Health, and each room was blessed. The ceremony was orchestrated by Rev. Dr. Ronald Durham, of Halifax Health-Hospice.
LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR ... By Emily Blackwood | Community Editor
Pet sitter, city resolve barking dispute All Creatures Pet Sitting was found in violation of code, which prohibits boarding of animals. Sylvia Leykamm and her daughter, Amanda Driscoll, have had a passion for animals for their entire lives. When Driscoll was 9, she put up a sign at their community pool to advertise dog-walking services. “She pretty much started the business that way,” Leykamm chuckled, referring to All Creatures Pet Sitting, which has been operating for two and half years. A licensed and insured pet sitter, Leykamm does most of her business by visiting other people’s
homes and tending to their pets while the owners are on vacation. But she also had been tending to her clients’ pets at her own home. A neighbor, Robin Hamlin, complained to the city of Ormond Beach about the barking dogs at Leykamm’s home, and, ultimately, Neighborhood Improvement Division Manager Joanne Naumann ruled that she had to discontinue that part of her business; boarding pets is against city code.
But Hamlin wrote another email Feb. 19: “Last night the barking went on for hours.” According to Leykamm, the two dogs were not barking, and they were not being kept as part of her business, but only as a favor to friends. Naumann said that’s still breaking the code. “Bartering animal care is a part of this business,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re doing this for your friend when you’re getting compensation.” Leykamm informed the city
3
that the dogs would be returned to their owners by March 1, and the case was closed. Though her primary hope is the barking will cease, Hamlin doesn’t wish any negative impacts from this issue to affect Leykamm’s business. “I know she quit her job to do this,” Hamlin said. “I’m not out to ruin her business or cut into her income, but I pay a mortgage and I should be happy to come home every day, too. I shouldn’t suffer for her business.”
The County Council is hoping to get a feel for what residents in unincorporated areas think about the choice between closing four county fire stations or raising the fire fund tax, which is included in property taxes. Public Protection Director George Recktenwald and County Fire Chief Jeff Smith are taking a presentation around the county (Feb. 24 in Ormond-by-the-Sea and March 3 in Ormond Beach) to explain why more taxes are needed to continue present services. They will report their findings to the County Council in March. Those who miss the meetings can listen to them, including audience comments, by going to this link: volusia. org/services/public-protection/fire-services/fire-fund. stml. Also, you can write your opinion on an online form and it will be sent to the County Council. The officials are telling residents that with falling house values, property taxes have brought in less money, but their workload has remained the same. They have cut cost by eliminating 44 positions and exploring ways to use modern technology. They have been using a reserve fund, built up during the housing boom, to balance the budget the last several years, but cannot draw it down anymore. “We’re at a crossroads,” Recktenwald said. They are seeking an increase of 45 cents per $1,000 of taxable value. For a $130,000 home, with $50,000 in exemptions, the increase would be $36 per year, Recktenwald said. If they don’t get the increase, they will close four fire stations to balance the budget: Rima Ridge Station near northwest Ormond Beach, two stations in the DeLand area, and one near Deltona. If the stations are closed, each remaining station will have cover 61 square miles, instead of 48 square miles. “It will have an impact on response times,” Smith said. At a recent meeting, some audience members stated that the station near their home is not on the list for closing, and there are not that many calls in their area anyway. Smith responded that their service is countywide and they move personnel around as needed. If firefighters were moved from their station to help in another area, they would have less protection for their neighborhood. He also reminded everyone of the wildfires that raged through the county in 1998. “If a fire is burning in the middle of the county, it can get over here pretty quick,” he said. Ormond Beach Fire Chief Bob Mandarino said until the county makes final plans, he doesn’t know if the city would be affected. Last year, the city had 7,400 calls and the county assisted with 350. ILLNESS / FROM PAGE 1 “Here’s this man who was so involved in our lives,” Pender said. “For him to just get this was so devastating. My dad was the soccer coach, softball coach and the car pool. For him to get this curve ball changed the dynamic of our family forever.” Though their lives were certainly different, their father, Ty Wilson, was still the same caring, kind, super-involved parent and community member he had always been. Now in his 70s, Ty Wilson has owned two businesses, was president of the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach, president of the Chamber of the Halifax Area, and is still is involved in the civic league and the checkered flag. Though Ty Wilson was humble in discussing his activity, his wife, Lynda Wilson, didn’t mind doing a little bragging. “I’ve seen the plaques on your wall,” she chuckled. “I honestly think the lesson that he has taught me with MS is that you are always capable of being successful,” Pender said. “Don’t ever let something get you down. Even in a wheel chair, he had two companies, and he never poor-mouthed anything. We would have to ask him when he needed help.” Roberson ended up going into her father’s real estate company, TW Realty, 12 years ago. “He’s been doing business in this area for 30-plus years,” Roberson said. “He’s so involved in this community, that’s why he’s so well-known. Over time, things have just progressed to the point now where he’s slowing down, so I’ve stepped up.” Ty and Lynda Wilson raised their family in Ormond Beach. They took their girls to St. James Episcopical Church and enrolled them at Seabreeze High School. Their love for the town, as illustrated by their community involvement, led to their role in bringing the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s awareness walk to The Casements in the 1980s. “The Casements is a nice venue,” Ty
Wilson said. “It seems to be well received. Ormond has come a long way from just being a bedded community inside Daytona Beach.” It’s no surprise that the whole family gets involved in the walk every March. Roberson is on the society’s board, and Pender gets her own family together to walk for “Team Tygers.” They both credit their father’s positive attitude to his ability to live a full life. “He is at a point where he does need more attention from us, but he’s still himself,” Roberson said. “I personally think that’s why he’s done as well. He has had the best attitude, and that can drive which way you go. I think he turned some of his anger into total positivity.” “Laughter is a huge cure, and it has really gotten us through some dark times,” Pender said. “He never really wanted to be this labeled as the guy in a wheel chair, and he never wanted other people to be uncomfortable around him. So when he sees someone else in a wheel chair, he’ll roll up next to them and say, ‘Want to race?’ When he’s having a beer in his wheel chair, he jokes about getting a DUI. His spirit is what has kept him going this long. I don’t know anybody that’s stronger than him.” His girls’ opinions are not far off from actual scientific research. The Journal of Positive Psychology published findings in 2013 showing altruism and cognitive reserve (the mind’s resistance to damage) increased wellbeing in people with MS. Though Ty Wilson isn’t sure if his attitude has made a difference, his wife is. “Sometimes he doesn’t even realize how positive he is,” she laughed. “When he was on the tennis team in high school, his coach told him he could tell he never gives up. That’s something he never even thinks about about.” Ty Wilson credited the progress research on MS has made to his ability to keep going. “The right support to help you,” he said.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN THE MS WALK Time: 8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. walk begins Place: Rockefeller Gardens, Ormond Beaach Goal: $13,000 Current Status: $5,320 Top Teams: MS Behaving, Mighty Myelins, Tygers, APD’s Team Mimi and Daytona Beach West Rotary Top Participants: Cathy Yasinska, Kimberly Cromartie, Bethany Pritchard, Jeff Blass and Jenna Pender Contact: Mary Healey, flcwalkinfo@ nmss.org Info: To form a team, join a team, or just donate, visit walkflc.nationalmssociety.org and search for Ormond Beach.
“You can have a good time.” “There’s always hope,” Lynda Wilson said. “If you can just maintain a cure is right around the corner.” However, the most important thing to this family is each other. “The girls have been so great in helping,” Lynda Wilson said. “Jenna (Pender) moved back to town, and now she’s just a few minutes away. She comes over to help him get our of bed or put on a sweater, whatever he needs. Both their husbands are great, too. Everyone has been so involved.” “Plus, I have a strong wife,” Ty smiled. The family will be going together to represent “Team Tyger” at Walk MS on March 7 at Rockefeller Gardens. The event raises money for research to find a cure for multiple sclerosis. “MS or not,” Pender said. “He would be there anyways.”

Raw meat stuffed with ibuprofen was found at the Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park off State Road A1A.
+ Poisoned raw meat found in Ormond-by-the-Sea dog park Teresa Downey took her dog to the Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park Feb. 25 just like she does every day. Soon after arriving around 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon, Downey noticed her dog eating something. She discovered several pieces of raw meat on the ground, and went to throw them away. That’s when she noticed cuts in the meat, and pills stuffed inside. After Deputy Donna Bowen, of the Voluisa County Sheriff’s Office, arrived, the pills were determined to be ibuprofen 200 mg. The meat was found in both the small and large dog park areas by both east entrances only. Several people said their dogs did eat the pieces before they realized what it was. The fat appeared to be beef fat and had not been there long; the fat was firm, cool and there were no bugs or dirt on the pieces of meat. Bowen took photos of the fat and pills to send to Animal Control before disposing of the items in a sealed bag in a large trash can. Janine Kosek called Bowen Feb. 26 and said she was at the park when Bowen was there, and her dog did eat a piece of the animal fat. Kosek said her dog, Rex, is a small dog and became ill. The vet advised that the dog had an upset stomach, and gave him some medication and sent him home to rest. Bowen has no information on who placed the animal fat in the dog area.
The incident led to a discussion by the City Commission on March 3 about current rules regarding dogs. Commissioner Bill Partington said when he heard about the incident on Feb. 21, and how distraught the people were, he was reminded of earlier discussions about dangerous dogs. “They are so upset,” Partington said. “It was like a member of their family.” In January, Commissioner Rick Boehm said he didn’t understand why Florida has a “one free kill rule” when it comes to attacking another animal. According to state law, a dog is deemed dangerous if it attacked or threatened to attack a person in certain situations, or if it “more than once severely injured or killed a domestic animal while off of the property of its owner or keeper.” Partington said he wanted the commission to send a letter to state representatives, asking that the law be changed so a dog will be ruled dangerous if it attacks another animal only once. If a dog is ruled dangerous, city ordinance states that the owner must show proof of liability insurance or surety bond in the amount of $100,000. There are also restrictions on ownership of a dangerous dog, covered in Section 5-78 through Section 5-81 in the Code of Ordinances, which can be found on the city website. Mayor Ed Kelley said they had been told that the matter would not get on the state agenda this year, but City Manager Joyce Shanahan said she would go

Under state law, the owner of the pit bull in the Feb. 21 incident could have taken it home after 10 days. However, he told the Humane Society he could not care for it, according to police. The pit bull was later euthanized at the Humane Society. Paula Flug, animal care director at the Humane Society, said the decision was made to euthanize the dog because they do not adopt out aggressive dogs. The pit bull had killed another animal, and was also very aggressive with staff. She said they often offer dogs to private, rescue agencies, but the pit bull was not suitable for that either. Wolford said he was not looking for the dog to be destroyed, but he thinks someone should be liable for the damages.
SUNSETTERS / FROM PAGE 1 happy to participate in what will be the Sunsetters’ daily ritual: a countdown to the sunset. Meghan Anderson came up with the idea after she and her husband were eating at a restaurant on the west coast, that according to them, had the most beautiful sunset view. “We couldn’t believe that there wasn’t a place like this is Daytona,” she said, “especially on the river.” On they way back from that trip, they drove past the vacant building at 115 Main St., and decided that was it. “It’s exciting because it’s been her dream forever,” Ian Anderson said. “We’ve been through a lot of hurdles. The building has been a bunch of different places, and it was really in disrepair. There was a lot of broken equipment, and unexpected expenses. We did a complete renovation, and downsized the bar to make it more family-friendly.” Though Ian Ander-
‘‘
son, a managing broker at Remax Signature Realty in Ormond Beach, may not have much restaurant experience, Meghan has been in the game for a long time. Starting as an ice cream scooper in Maine when she was 14, she eventually made her way down the coast to The Beach Bucket, where she was the general manager. “The Beach Bucket was the best place ever,” she said. “I got to see the beach every day at work, but it was time to move on.” Though their official grand opening isn’t until April 3, Meghan Anderson said the locals who came out to try their Caribbeanstyle food were amazing. “I don’t think there was one tourist in the building,” she laughed. “A lot of people thanked me for opening it. We’ve got our countdown to the sunset, and we do a toast. We just want to be the place were all the locals go.”

Behind the curtains at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Feb. 28 was a frenzy of activity. Sparkling crowns, pink tutus and shiny black shoes r ushed back and forth in the tight corners backstage. The chatter between parents and contestants as EMILY pictures BLACKWOOD were being taken could easily be heard by the front row. It was showtime. But this pageant is no ordinary pageant. The Shining STARS Pageant and Fashion Show is the crowning glory of the events put on by the city of Ormond Beach’s Special Populations Division of the Department of Leisure Services. During the event, both children and adults with special needs are given the opportunity to showcase their many talents, and put a smile on literally every face in the crowd — including my own. This was my second year attending, and I decided to arrive a little earlier than normal to really get a sense of what it

takes to put on the show. Really, I intended on being a fly on wall as to not get in anyone’s way, but that didn’t last long. Walking in the door, I was greeted by a woman named Carol who kept talking about what a gorgeous smile the woman in front of her had. There was no introduction or handshake between us, just a rush of information casually provided by someone as if she were your best friend. And that was pretty much the nature of every conversation I had with a STARS contestant. After taking her place in line, Charity Gallagher called me over and asked very kindly if I could go grab her butterfly purse that she left by her chair. Faith and trust in total strangers, another admirable quality
of the STARS contestants. As I took what I’ve come to know as my usual seat (on the floor, right in front of center
stage), I thought about what I used to think pageants were: a beauty contest. But after my experiences with the STARS of Ormond Beach, I know it is so much more than that. Whether they were singing their hearts out or dancing with their friends, the contestants felt as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. And if that’s not worth celebrating, I don’t know what is. Email Community Editor Emily Blackwood at emily@ormondbeachobserver.com.

+ Tax law is flawed Dear Editor: The purpose of this letter is to inform those receiving Social Security benefits who, according to the 1983 law enacted by Congress, have to pay federal taxes on a portion of their benefits. Research Note 12 Taxation of Social Security Benefits was signed into law in 1983 by President Reagan. The law exempted the low income Social Security beneficiaries by having thresholds. For single individuals the threshold is $25,000, for those filing joint returns, $32,000. Now, 31 years later, the thresholds are the same. They assumed those
exempted would not have any increase in income in 31 years. What were they thinking? Those paying tax on benefits has doubled in 31 years. An example: Single person today has $20,000 in SS benefits. Gets a job for extra income to pay bills. Benefits taxed at 50% equals $10,000 plus $20,000 wages equals $30,000 less $25,000 threshold equals $5,000 taxable SS benefits. A surviving spouse: Threshold was $32,000 when filing jointly, now single $25,000. A $44,000 threshold was added in 1993 to tax higher income SS benefits. I received a letter from Sen. Bill Nelson more than 10 years ago when I was a tax preparer saying he had introduced
legislation to raise the thresholds using a percentage similar to that used to raise the standard deduction, personal exemption, etc. each year. If the thresholds were increased by 1% a year, today’s thresholds would be $32,750 single, $41,920 married filing jointly. Retired senior citizens would have an income tax reduction. Sen. Nelson said the legislation died in committee, never reached the floor of Congress. Those affected by this law should go to the Social Security website, read Research Note 12:Taxation of Social Security Benefits, and if you feel it’s unfair contact your Congressman. father lopez tennis By Jeff Dawsey | Sports Writer
TITLE WAVE Green Wave stays undefeated with wins over Lake Mary Prep. Winning its seventh straight tennis meet to start the season came easier than any other win the Father Lopez Green Wave have achieved thus far. Lopez smashed the Lake Mary Prep Griffins 7-0 in singles and doubles Tuesday, March 3, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona. “This is probably our strongest boys team in recent history,” coach Jane Fountain said. “They have a lot of depth, and they’re dedicated players, working year-round on their game. They’ve been together for a couple of years, and they’re becoming a welloiled machine.” In singles competition,
Zach Pifer had the only competitive match, winning 8-6 in comeback fashion. Team captain Will Greaves, Dane Hawthorne, Mikey Munier, Zach Pifer and Connor Sikorski all shut their opponents out to win 8-0. Sikorski teamed up with Tyler Turnbull in doubles to win 8-2, and Kevin Fountain and Jacob Attia gave up just one game in their 8-1 win. Sikorski improved his singles record to 7-0 on the season. “We started this season a little slow, due to injuries, but we’re training a lot harder than last year, so we expect to finish even stronger,” Greaves said. “We know we can make it to states, but we’re trying
to go far, when we get there. We know what’s to come with the rest of the season and districts, and we’ve trained hard enough to beat all the teams coming up.” Last season the Green Wave were knocked out of playoff contention by Windermere Prep in the district finals, and Greaves the Green Wave can hardly wait to get their chance at revenge. “We’re looking to get payback,” he added. “We’ll probably meet them in the regional tournament, and we’re going to be ready.” Father Lopez will look to continue its streak against Bishop Moore on Thursday, March 5, in Orlando.
GIRLS SWEEP
The Father Lopez Lady Green Wave (5-3) didn’t drop a single point to the Griffins of Lake Mary Prep, shutting them out 7-0 in singles and doubles matches. Sophomore Maya West blanked her opponent 8-0, and Caroline Herrero, Abigail Marvin and Madeline Ufheil all won their matches 8-1. Girls’ top player Carlie Davis had the most difficult match, but she finished strong with an 8-4 win. In doubles play, Davis and Herrero won their match 8-3, and Marvin and West won 8-0 to remain undefeated at 6-0.

school record By Jeff Dawsey | Sports Writer
10.53 seconds Adrian Killins leads Mainland to third-place finish at track meet. As temperatures continued to drop and the wind picked up at the East Coast Classic track meet on Friday, Feb. 27, at Flagler Palm Coast High School, Mainland’s fast man Adrian Killins assumed he wouldn’t do too well. Most of the athletes in attendance wore extra clothes as they competed in their events, but that didn’t stop the junior speedster from setting a new mark in the Classic’s history. Killins broke the East Coast Classic’s 100-meter dash record and set a new Mainland school record with a 10.53, which is also the best time in Florida this season. “I was actually shocked that I did well at the meet because it was very cold,” Killins said. “I prepared my body well and got the right treatment, and after I got a 10.80 in preliminaries, I knew it was going to be pretty good. I didn’t expect a great result to come so early in the season.” Killins also won the 200-meter dash and helped Mainland, who placed third overall, upset FPC in the 4X100-meter relay. Other notable Mainland finishes include Alex Mack and Demarcus Adams who placed second and third, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles. Tyree Bostick finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, and Bryan Gregory placed fourth in the triple jump. Adams also placed fourth in the high jump, and Mainland’s 4X200 and 4X400 relay teams finished second and third, respectively. Mainland will next compete at the Lake Brantley Invitational Saturday, March 7,

at Lake Brantley. With fair weather, Killins expects to improve on his historic time. Florida’s state record is 10.19 in the 100-meter run. “Everyone keeps asking me if I could’ve done better had the weather not been so bad,” he said. “I’m going to continue to train harder, and I’m looking to get around 10.20 when everything is said and done.” jeff@ormondbeachobserver.com

THE ORMOND BEACH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESENTS
First year a learning curve for ice cream entrepreneurs Bike Week starts March 6 and the usual businesses are getting ready: bars, nightclubs, ice cream shops. Yes, even Big Scoop Ice Cream is preparing for the influx of visitors. They are making sure they have bagels, muffins and coffee for the bike crowd walking around in the morning looking for breakfast, and hot dogs for the rest of the day. They also expect to sell ice cream, even though the bike crowd is generally not big ice cream consumers. “If you have 25,000 people walking around here you’re going to sell ice cream,” said Mike Pantzer, whose dad, Leon, owns the shop. The Pantzers will be celebrating their one-year anniversary during Bike Week, and Leon Pantzer, a businessman and entrepreneur, said they learned a lot the first year. “I had never run an ice cream store before,” he said. “It’s been a learning curve.” Last year, they learned how many snowbirds go back up north for the summer, when they lost a lot of regular customers. But, they are developing regular customers from the many residential developments in the surrounding areas. “It takes time to build a clientele,” he said. They also learned the area has rainy summer months that put a damper on ice cream sales. So, they expanded and now have a small area big enough for two tables so customers can get out of the weather.
Wayne Grant
Leon and Mike Pantzer opened their shop a year ago.
They also added hot dogs to their menu, to supplement ice cream sales. Their selling point is that they are the “home of the big scoop,” offering a big serving of a high quality product. “You’re getting real ice cream,” he said. Mike Pantzer, who also works as a stand-up comic, pointed out that Destination Daytona is the site of many types of events, in addition to Bike Week. For example, they have a farmers market, roller derby, and last year there was a country music festival over a weekend. They are expecting their second year to be better.
It's never too early or too late to begin planning for your financial future.

started to get orders. People also asked for glass doors and other accessories. His log home business wasn’t doing that well, so he decided to open a fireplace and accessory store. “I filled a niche,” he said. The business was successful over the years, and he and his wife were able to travel to Europe, China and Africa, and he was also able to pay off the store and his home. Warm weather affected the business; it would slow down in June. So he and his wife would take vacation. Later, with the growth of the area, he even had decent business in June. Only one fireplace and a few accessories were scattered around the showroom at All Florida Fireplace Supplies, 352 S. Yonge St., on Feb. 28, its last day of business. Owner Jim Dougherty, 76, wearing suspenders and a Panama hat, leaned back in his swivel chair behind his desk in the near empty room. “I enjoyed this business so much,” he said. “I enjoyed all the customers. People would come in with so many stories.” For example, he said a person came in and told him how a raccoon climbed down the chimney and got into their house. “I’d help them with their problems,” he said. “I’ll miss the camaraderie with the people.” Many customers will also miss the store, which was in the same location for 33 years. “One lady came in and said, ‘Where’s the crying room? I want to cry,” Dougherty said with a smile. Dougherty had a liquidation sale of his merchandise, including fireplaces, woodburning stoves, glass doors, screens, gas logs and other accessories. Back problems forced his retirement. He faces several months of recovery after recent surgery. “I can’t bend over,” he said. Dougherty, who grew up in the Daytona Beach area, never set out to have a fireplace business. He worked for Bell South in sales and marketing for 14 years, but quit in 1981 after the company was broken up into separate entities by the federal government amid monopoly charges. Dougherty kept being transferred around, so he decided to quit and start his own business. He started to sell log homes in the area, which had wood-burning stoves. He also advertised the stoves for sale, and he
