A victim without a face? New technology could aid in identifying a female victim, 25 years later. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Twenty-five years ago today, the skeletal remains of a woman were found in a wooded area east of Clyde Morris Boulevard near Strickland Range Road. Since then police have been searching for any clue to identify the woman they believe is a victim in an unsolved homicide case. Though they’ve had little luck so far, new technology has brought some light on what Jane Doe might have looked like. Using technology that was not available in the past, a forensic artist created a new reconstruction of Jane Doe’s face that is nearly lifelike. Police are hoping this new photo will help generate some answers. “Though I haven’t been working on the case from the beginning,” Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Pat Thoman said, “I started a cold-case unit here five years ago. We hope new technology like this can help us solve them.” In 2001, an FBI-trained forensic artist with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office reconstructed the victim’s skull and used clay to recreate her facial features. Though the description followed what the police gave the artist, the image generated no clues. With new technology, this artist followed the same descrip-

ORMOND TEACHER’S EXHIBIT FEATURED AT PEABODY

LEMONADE STAND BENEFITS FOOD BRINGS HOPE

The art teacher for both Ormond Beach Elementary and Tomoka Elementary is getting recognition for his personal work. Wendell Fuller’s exhibition of paintings is currently being displayed in the Rose Room in the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach. They will stay there until May 4. A closing reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 1, with performances by Two Guys with Horns — featuring Paul Ricco and fellow Tomoka Elementary teacher Roland St. Gelais. Fuller has worked in Volusia County Schools for 30 years. As an artist, he has trained in the techniques of egg tempera and varnish painting.

The profits from a lemonade stand, operated by Ormond Beach residents Adrianna Mortola, Cami Kent, Evelyn Kent and Kathryn Dana, will be donated to Food Brings Hope. While on Spring Break, the group of young ladies decided to spend their time giving back to the community. Dr. Chris Kent, a surgeon with Florida Hospital, met Food Brings Hope Founder and Chair Forough Hosseini at a fundraising event and later shared with his daughter, Cami Kent, and wife, Connie Kent, about the charity’s efforts to eradicate hunger and homelessness in the community. The girls did more research into FBH’s mission and vision and decided they wanted to raise funds to benefit the organization.

Karen Jans was on her way home when she saw signs advertising a lemonade stand down the road. “I am so impressed by the hard work and dedication of these girls during their Spring Break,” Jans said in a press release. The young ladies stayed until 6 p.m. raising funds. “We were so happy to raise money for Food Brings Hope,” Connie Kent said. “It sounds like a wonderful charity that we would like to continue to be a part of.” “I am very impressed with the generosity and thoughtfulness of these young ladies,” said Hosseini. “Acts of kindness like this have the power to change our community and inevitably our world. Mrs. Kent is an amazing role model for her girls and their friends; enabling them to learn how to give back while learning about running a small business and how to handle money. I am delighted FBH is the recipient of their hard work! Kudos to these young ladies!”

Teachers vs. board: Impasse remains During the 11th meeting regarding their salaries, the Volusia Teachers Organization walked out. Photo by Wayne Grant

City swaps building for land and hears beach driving concerns. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

The City Commission gave the go-ahead to a condo development on the former hospital property on Sterthaus Drive; agreed to swap a building on West Granada Boulevard for land to be used for drainage; and discussed beach parking issues at their meeting April 21. The officials gave the necessary zoning and other approvals so that local developer Buddy LeCour, principal owner in Ormond King Center LLC, can build a condo complex with 286 units in 11 buildings at Sterthaus Drive and Old Kings Road. Four buildings will be constructed in the first phase, and demand will dictate when the rest are built, according to city Senior Planner Steve Spraker. The 27-acre site was occupied by Memorial Hospital until it was demolished in 2012. Mayor Ed Kelley thanked LeCour for bringing a “quality development” to the city. He

Condo development also mentioned, as he has in the past, that he wished the city had bought the property for construction of a “city center,” but said the condo development will bring in revenue for the city. DEVELOPER ACQUIRES WEST GRANADA BUILDING

The commissioners gave unanimous approval to trading a 600-square-foot building at 164 W. Granada Blvd. to developer Bill Jones in exchange for property he owns on Lincoln Avenue. The agreement was in the consent agenda at the last commissioner meeting, but Commissioner Bill Partington objected, saying residents should have a chance to offer suggestions on what to do with the building. Before the April 21 meeting, Partington said he had toured the building and believes that the trade is good for the city. However, he said he was glad he pulled it from the agenda. He said he believes decisions that involve more than the city manager’s authority, $25,000, should always have two readings by the com-

gets final mission to allow public comment. Appraisals showed the properties had an equal value of $80,000. The city plans to use the Lincoln Avenue land for storm water retention and build a passive park. Jones has renovated several properties on Granada Boulevard, including Rose Villa and 31 on the Boulevard, keeping a historical flavor in the design. The building being traded by the city was built in 1965. The city had leased it to Halifax Urban Ministries until a few years ago for a satellite office. The HUM office is now at 54 S. Ridgewood Ave. OFFICIALS HEAR OPINIONS ON BEACH DRIVING

Several residents came forward at the meeting to speak in favor of Let Volusia Vote, an organization that wants a referendum on the 2016 ballot that would put any beach driving decisions in the hands of the voting public.

“The residents want a choice in the matter.”

OK

They asked the commissioners to send a letter of support to Volusia County. The speakers emphasized that they were not promoting beach driving, but rather giving the public the right to decide. “The residents want a choice in the matter,” said Linda Smiley. Kelley told the crowd that if they collect the required number of signatures on their petition, they will have the right to vote, but there was nothing the commission could do. “There’s not a single thing we can do to let you vote or not vote,” he said. But speakers said they still wanted the city’s support. One speaker, Peggy Farmer, was against the initiative, saying that having an election to decide beach driving issues would be too expensive and impractical. None of the commissioners made a motion for a resolution to send a letter of support to the County Council.

Jane Doe gets a new look; will she be ID’d? FROM PAGE 1

tion: 25 to 40 years old, about 5 feet, 4 inches tall with a medium build and light brown hair tied back in pigtails with red bands. The forensic examination of Jane Doe’s remains revealed she may have given birth to one or more children during her lifetime. Information from her skeletal and dental remains have been compared with state and national missing persons databases, but so far those comparisons haven’t yielded any clues. According to a survey by the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, 7% of police departments have dedicated cold case units, and only a small proportion of agencies have a policy on reactivating and investigating those cases. When they are reopened, they rely primarily on new witness information and newly test-

able physical evidence. Thoman said there is no new evidence regarding Jane Doe’s case, but they’re still hoping this new photo will help. The woman’s death has long been considered a homicide. Her remains were discovered April 23, 1990, and based on an examination by a forensic anthropologist, investigators believe she was killed three to eight weeks before her skeleton was found. Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact Sgt. Thoman at 254-1535 or Crime Stoppers of Volusia and Flagler Counties, toll free at 1-888-2778477. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

The debate between the VTO and the Volusia County School Board is seemingly far from over. In the 11th negotiation meeting April 16, the board presented what they’re calling “their best offer.” According to Director of Community Information Services for Volusia County Schools Nancy Wait, the district presented a plan that would increase teachers’ salaries by $1,000 minimum a year, with an additional $750 for teachers on the performance pay schedule with a rating of “highly effective,” and an additional $300 for teachers on the performance pay schedule with a rating of “effective.” Though the School Board finds the salary increase substantive (the raise is higher than Seminole County teachers received this year), VTO members found it offensive. “They want to give a very small increase, or a smaller increase to those who have tenure than to those who don’t have tenure and said if they want the bigger increase, they need to give up their tenure,” teachers union president Andrew Spar told News 13. The School Board said the raise couldn’t be larger because there just wasn’t enough funding available. “I am disappointed that the union rejected the very best offer the district can afford,” stated Superintendent James Russell in a press release. “The problems caused by years of reduced education funding cannot be immediately overcome when the district is just beginning to return to funding levels from seven years ago.” Spar said the new pay increase was pinning the new teachers against the tenured teachers, and called it “bully tactics.” “Effective July 1, 2014, state law requires that all annual contract teachers must be placed on a performance-pay salary schedule,” Wait said. “All tenured teachers must also be given the opportunity to be placed on the performance-pay salary schedule. All remaining tenured teachers will be placed on a grandfathered salary schedule.” Wait also said the Florida statute requires performance pay be funded prior to funding any salary adjustments. In addition, any salary adjustment on the performance pay schedule for teachers rated highly effective must be greater than the largest salary adjustment on the grandfather schedule. Spar and the other participating members walked out after hearing the board’s latest negotiations, and are preparing for SEE IMPASSE PAGE 4

a long battle. Tammy Hadley, a parent of a student at Ormond Beach Elementary, says she supports the teachers as they “work to the contract” because she has seen first hand the commitment that teachers have to students. “Working to contract is not making things easy for these teachers,” said Hadley, an active parent volunteer for almost 20 years. “Many of them get a lot of their work done before and after their contracts say to clock in and out of work. I have gone to the school as late as 5:30 p.m. to find teachers still working in their classrooms. Working to contract requires them to fit anywhere from three to four hours of extra work a day into their contracted time.” Teachers all across Volusia County have been working to their contracted time as a way to protest the School Board’s salary increase that many find disrespectful. “Yes, our teachers are asking for competitive pay, but they are also asking for the tools needed to properly teach our children the required curriculum,” Hadley said. “They are asking for time to prepare lesson plans, complete paperwork, attend meetings or training and/or attend afterschool activities. Last but not least they are asking for respect as professionals in their fields.” Since the union rejected the board’s offer, the School Board will decide the question of the amount of raises and other negotiated issues during the pending impasse process.

Teams at the 12th-annual Relay for Life in Ormond Beach celebrated cancer survivors, remembered those who have died, and renewed the commitment to battle the disease on April 18 at Calvary Christian Church, 1687 W. Granada Blvd. Thirty-three teams with 168 participants raised $21,877.67 so far. The first lap around the track was taken by survivors, including 8-year-old Cameron Fulling, of Palm Coast, who has been fighting brain cancer since he was 2. He has had six surgeries to remove six tumors, as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatments. But, as a true survivor, Cameron attended the relay event after playing baseball that morning. “He got two hits,” said his dad, Dan. He is in first grade at Bunnell Elementary School, and also has been able to take karate lessons this past year. Last year, Cameron received a black belt in karate from Villari’s Martial Arts School, 1930 W. Granada Blvd., in honor of his courageous fight against the disease. He had met David Grabner,

school owner, while attending a birthday party at the school, and told Grabner that he wanted to be a “karate kid” but had cancer. Grabner stayed in contact, and eventually awarded him the black belt to recognize his courage. “He’s always cheerful,” Grabner said. “He shows maturity.” Carmeron chose to walk with Grabner, a survivor of throat cancer, in the survivors’ walk. “The 18th of April is also Cameron’s birthday, and he chose to walk with me on this special day. I feel honored,” Grabner said. Cameron’s mother, Melisa, said they had recently discovered that he has another tumor, and faces surgery. “He fought it before, so he’ll fight it again,” she said. “We honestly didn’t know if he would make it to his third birthday, and here he is on his eighth birthday.” After the survivors’ walk, there was a caretakers’ walk, and then they had a special dinner in the gymnasium. At that point, the teams started their relay walks until midnight. Villari’s students participated in the relay, wearing pink belts in recognition of the fight against cancer. Beachside living: what the postcards don’t tell you You’ll never get the sand out of your car. Don’t even try. Is it worth living so close to the beach?

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

ference between living beachside and living mainland until this past week. Gabe was in town, and we spent a few days with some friends at a motel in Daytona Beach Shores. I know, I know. We should have splurged for something fancier in my new hometown, but we had already had a condo rental backfire on us, and we were out $250. So “cheap” became our new destination. And I know, living in a motel for three days is a far stretch when compared to living fulltime beachside, but I think I at least caught a glimpse of the good life. First of all: sand. I love it when it’s warm, and I can bury my dad in it when he’s sleeping, but right now it’s just a nuisance. I’ve vacuumed my car three times now, and I’m still finding remnants of the

YOUR TOWN

I may have passed my oneand-a-half-year anniversary as an Ormond Beach resident a few weeks ago, but there’s still a lot I have left to learn. I’m still lost without my GPS, and I’m super guilty of forgetting the 25 mph speed limit on Wilmette Avenue. Thankfully, our city has very understanding motorcycle cops. They know I’m just excited to get to work. And though I may be a mere 15 minutes from the beach, I hadn’t really grasped the dif-

ocean. Do you beachsiders install your cars with portable vacuums? Is everything covered in plastic? How do you keep from committing a felony when you’ve completely swept your tile floor and your boyfriend waltzes in carrying two sandy chairs? I need answers. I really thought I would love living right on the beach. The view of the horizon, the sound of the waves, the smell of hotdogs — it sounds like heaven, right? But this sand issue has really made me reconsider my place in Ormond Beach. Maybe living beachside just requires you to develop a more laid-back attitude. Maybe you have to become one with nature and all its irritating properties. Maybe you have to like sand castles in your living room. I guess I’ll never know until I move over the bridge. Until then, I’m going to enjoy the concrete slab in my backyard that has never made its way into my driver’s seat.

WHERE’S THE PARTY? 10:13 p.m. — 100 Block of Ocean Shore Boulevard. Prowler: The owner of the oceanfront house said a person rang the doorbell, peered into windows and tried a door knob. When the victim told the suspect to leave the property, the suspect said, “Oh, I didn’t know where I was.” He then sprinted down the street. After an officer made contact, the suspect said he went to the house because he was told by a friend to go there for a house party. Once he got there, he realized he had been tricked. The suspect said his friend did this because he wanted to get him out of the house because they were throwing him a surprise party for a new toy he had developed with a Sony play station controller. The suspect had a controller with him. He gave the officer the number of the house where he was staying, and said he was going to buy it tomorrow. When asked how much he was going to pay, he said he did not know. The officer went to the address, and found there was no party or no people, just the suspect’s bicycle leaning against the house. He was arrested for prowling.

APRIL 15

MAGAZINE MYSTERY 12:06 p.m. — 300 Block of South Yonge Street Information: The police received a report of a large number of magazines discarded along the Granada Bridge, U.S. 1, and State Road A1A. All were the same real estate publication.

The city public works director told the investigating officer it was ongoing problem. When contacted, the magazine publisher said he believes someone is taking the publications from distribution stands, but he did not have any suspects. The issues on the street were current, and not being collected for destruction. DON’T BELIEVE EVERY BUSINESS CARD 12:28 p.m. — 200 Block of Riverside Drive. Information: The victim said she was having roof problems and noticed a roofing worker next door. He gave her a business card with a company name, so she believed he was a licensed contractor. He gave an estimate of $2,500 for her roof and she agreed to the repair. The suspect worked on the roof, and she paid him the money. Later, the roof continued to leak, but he did not return her phone calls. The victim called the company that was listed on the card, and the owner said the suspect had been doing this for years, representing himself as the company. He said the suspect had been fired, and his company would take care of the damages to the home. TAX FRAUD TARGETS BUSINESSES, TOO 10:18 a.m. — 200 Block of North Yonge Street. Fraud: The business owner said he received paperwork from

BRIEFS Ormond Beach man killed on State Road 40

the Department of Treasury requesting information on tax claims that were filed under his name and business. There had been a claim for a $25,267 refund for 2014 taxes. The victim was advised to contact credit bureaus and put an alert on his personal information.

APRIL 16

SMELLY RENTER DISPUTE 7:35 a.m. — 100 Block of Riverside Drive Vandalism: The victim said she moved out of the residence she was renting, but left her car parked in front of the house next door. She said she had three vehicles and could not move them all before the 5 p.m. deadline to move out. Also, the victim said she did not have any more bags and left some items in the refrigerator. The next morning, when the victim arrived to pick up her car, she found the items she left in the refrigerator dumped on top of her car windshield and hood. There were sweet potatoes, eggs and a jar of pickles. She told the officer she would have the car checked to see if there was any damage.

William Snow, 46, of Ormond Beach, was killed about 11:40 p.m. on State Road 40 near Airport Road on April 18 when his car overturned. An Ormond Beach woman in another car was not injured. The crash is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol. The report states that Snow was driving a 1984 Volkswagen westbound when he lost control for an unknown reason and crossed into the median. The car overturned onto its roof in the eastbound lanes. A few minutes later, Tina Meyer, 41, of Ormond Beach, was driving a 2008 Ford Fusion eastbound. The front of her car struck the left side of the Volkswagen. She was not injured. Snow was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

Motorcycle wreck takes life of man from Tennessee Ormond Beach Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred at approximately 1:38 a.m. April 18. Lawrence Brace, 58, of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, was northbound on U.S. 1 and apparently left the roadway north of Hernandez Avenue, according to the police report. The motorcycle went over the sidewalk and into the parking lot of the Pirana Grill, where it

struck a parked car. Brace was pronounced dead on the scene by EVAC paramedics. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ormond Beach Police at 677-0731. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at 277-TIPS or toll-free at 1-888-277-TIPS.

HUM gala, dinner reservations near April 27 deadline The sixth-annual HUM Blue Diamond Celebration, a fundraising gala and dinner, is set for May 2 at The Club at Pelican Bay. The Humanitarian Award and Corporate Social Responsibility Award will be presented, and Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry will give the keynote address. McKenzie Bowlus connects with Kaley Dale for a long bomb in Seabreeze’s 28-7 win over FPC.

MCKENZIE BOWLUS: SHE’S GOT

McKenzie Bowlus began her football career with little confidence, but now she has Seabreeze at the top of the district rankings. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS WRITER

E

very time she steps onto the football field, Seabreeze quarterback M c Ke n z i e B owl u s seems to do something amazing. Whether she throws a ton of touchdown passes, returns a punt for a touchdown in the final seconds, scores on a fourth-and-long or throws a game-winning touchdown pass, Bowlus continues to prove that her confidence in her team and her individual talents are on another level. While some media members have voted her among the best quarterbacks in the county since her freshman year, she hasn’t always believed that. “My freshman year as the starting quarterback was tough for me,” Bowlus said. “Although I knew what I was doing, it was still a challenge. I got talked about at school, how I shouldn’t be playing, and how flag football was a sport for people who could actually play. Every time I made a bad throw, I felt like I always got put down, but never built up.” Bowlus discovered her throwing skill as a kid, when she would throw the football around the yard with her younger and older

GAME

brothers. Her talent developed so well, she became the only girl on the recreational football team, a starter. “There’s something special about everyone, but as for me, I was born to be an athlete,” Bowlus said. Years later, while on the Seabreeze basketball team, she began to throw a football with, then flag football player, Alijea Russell. After catching spiral after spiral, Russell was convinced there was a place on the team for Bowlus. “I knew we needed a quarterback, and as soon as I saw her throw, I knew immediately that

she was the girl we needed,” Russell said. Bowlus finished that season with 36 touchdown passes and was honored as the Bright House Top Athlete at their annual Breakfast of Champions ceremony. This season, she has displayed an exceptional ability to make plays from any side of the ball, and she has her and the Lady Sandcrabs’ confidence at an alltime high. “She always surprises me,” Russell added. “This year has, by far, been her best year. She amazes me every time she plays, but when she makes a good play, she always

looks at me and all I can think is ‘That’s my girl.’” Bowlus has come a long way from the freshman who lacked confidence as the fearful leader. After every play, she can be seen encouraging and congratulating teammates on the field as the leader, a position she takes pride in. “Being the leader showed everyone that I didn’t give up,” Bowlus said. “I made it where I wanted to be, because I wouldn’t let people put me down, no matter what they said. “If you truly love a sport as much as I love this one, nobody should be able to stop you.”

Kaley Dale catches over a defender for her third touchdown pass of the game.

The Sandcrabs (8-2) had very little problems moving the ball up and down the field against the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs, as they beat them 28-7 in the regular-season finale on Tuesday, April 21, at FPC. McKenzie Bowlus, who threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns, connected with her favorite receiver, Kaley Dale, with three scores and Mikayla Laks for the other. Dale finished with over 100 receiving yards, and Laks had 75 yards, also six flag pulls on defense. The Lady Crabs will play rivals, Spruce Creek, in the first round of the district tournament at 7:30 Monday, April 27, at Warner Christian.

T

his past weekend, I took my next-door neighbor, Jesse Hatfield, 9, to a softball game. Although he told me before the game started that he wanted to play baseball when he got older, he didn’t understand much about the game, and he asked enough questions to keep me busy the whole game. “Why do the players keep yelling at each other? What happens when the ball goes out? Do they all get a chance to bat? Who do you think is going to win?” said Jesse in his innocent, light voice, only getting warmed up. After every out, Jesse discovered a new angle to question me about. “Are they playing a country song? What are the people doing in the blue shirts and gray pants (umpires)?” After the third inning, I took him to the concession stand. Finishing as much chicken tenders and Hawaiian Punch as he could, Jesse hopped off the fourth row of the bleachers, with newfound energy, to blast more questions. “Can they hit an airplane with the ball?” he inquired. “No, it’s too high in the air,” I told him. “Well, can they hit that bird?” countered Jesse, as a black bird flew away from the stadium into the nearby trees. “Well, maybe, but a baseball player has hit a bird before,” I replied, briefing him on the famous Randy Johnson pitch. At the end of the game, the winning team splashed a teammate with a Gatorade bath. I knew that would bewilder him. “Did they dump water on her because she was sweaty?” he said. Afterward, I asked him if he had a good time, and with a big smile, he screamed “Yes!” which made all the questioning worth it. He gained a lot more knowledge, and my brain was exercised. It was a good reminder: When you grow weary of teaching, kids will grow weary of learning. Let them ask away, and don’t refuse; they’re only having fun.

Seabreeze gets regional rematch with Ocala Forest After losing to Ocala Forest last year, the Lady Sandcrabs hope for better results in a rematch. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS WRITER

Last year, Seabreeze traveled an hour and a half to Ocala to open its playoff campaign against Ocala Forest, and the Lady Sandcrabs didn’t last a full seven innings. They were rolled 12-1. This sea-

son, they have shown that they are different and much better. “We played them last year in the first round, and we lost, but we’re going to give them a fight this time,” coach Tarisa CraigCraggy Said. Seabreeze (14-5) has a better team and individual numbers

than they had last year, including batting, pitching and defense. Although the Sandcrabs lost the district championship with just two runs, they’re expected to score more runs on a typical day. While they have improved, the Sandcrabs also know that their opponents haven’t changed much from being a dominant team. The Ocala Forest Wildcats, ranked 14th in the state, are currently 25-2, and they’ll be looking to breeze through their first-

round matchup, just as they did last season, but Craig-Craggy and Seabreeze have other things in mind. “We have a great hitting team, but we just couldn’t string the hits together (in the district title game),” Craig-Craggy said. “I hope we bounce back next week, have a good week of practice, and we’ll see what happens.” The two will meet in the first round on April 23 in Ocala. Follow @pcosports on Twitter.

LADY CRABS FALL TO DELTONA IN DISTRICT FINAL In a defensive battle, the Deltona Lady Wolves held off Seabreeze to repeat as district champions with a 3-2 win Friday, April 17, at Matanzas. “We’ve been runner-up the last few years, so this is history repeating itself,” coach Tarisa Craig-Craggy said. The Lady Crabs got off to a hot start, scoring in the first inning on a Taylor Lee single that drove Taylor Daller home. Unfortunately for Seabreeze, they wouldn’t add any more runs until the sixth inning. Deltona tied the game in the third, and then took the lead in the fifth. “We only allowed three runs, but we have to get more than two,” Craig-Craggy said.

SIDELINES

From left to right: Sandra Davis, Brooks Davis, Lions President Al Legg and Karl Davis father.

Brooks Davis honored as Lions’ student athlete The Ormond Beach Lions Club selected Seabreeze’s Brooks Davis as the Student Athlete for the Month of March. “I didn’t know much about the Lions Club at first, but after the ceremony I was astonished at how big it is and all the work they do,” Davis said. “I was very pleased on receiving an award from such involved people that do so much for the community, but I wanted to honor them for all the hard work they do. All in all, it’s extremely satisfying and makes me feel accomplished, knowing they were honoring my work as a student athlete.” As a student, Davis has maintained a weighted 4.0 GPA, scored a 1770 on the SAT, and 26 on the ACT. He served countless hours in community service, working with Toys for Tots in particular. As an athlete, he was the captain and four-year varsity

soccer player for the Sandcrabs. Davis played center defensive midfielder and helped lead Seabreeze to the regional playoffs this past season.

Browder takes medal to the prom It took Seabreeze’s Justin Browder four years to court his prom date, and she agreed to go with him at the perfect time. Browder’s date was his sixthplace weightlifting state finals medal. He won in the 119-pound weight division on April 17 at the Kissimmee Civic Center. “Medaling was all I ever wanted,” Browder said. “I knew my competitors were tough, so making it on that podium was extremely satisfying.” After getting his prom picture taken with his “date” in his arms, Browder said he was met by other promgoers with laughter and congratulations for his efforts in the state finals.

Ormond kids give a ‘bear’ hug

C

uddling teddy bears in their arms, the children attending the Ormond Beach Historical Society’s Teddy Bear Picnic listened to the stories told by Diana Simmons. “What do gopher turtles do?” she asked the wide-eyed crowd. “They dig!” The children followed her digging motions with diligence and smiles. This was the first event of its kind presented by the society, and Simmons said there will be more. “We wanted to do something for the kids,” she said. “It’s good for them to be around other children, and it’s just fun.” Visit ormondhistory.org for upcoming events.

Three-year-old Caleb has been battling health issues since he was 5 months old.

Ormond children represent Easter Seals in event Caleb Wilson and Mikayla Buffington are participating in the Walk With Me event Thursday, April 23. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Out of the 11,500 children and adults with disabilities that Easter Seals serves in Volusia and Flagler counties, two Ormond Beach residents will serve as the charity’s ambassadors for its Walk With Me event. Four-year-old Mikayla Buffington and 3-year-old Caleb Wilson are the faces of the organization’s upcoming fitness walk and 5K race at 5 p.m. at EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University. The event is held to raise money

for the charity that provides its participants with therapy, education, advocacy, recreation and support services. Mikayla Buffington, whose father, Joshua Buffington, coowns Buffington’s Bar and Grille in Ormond Beach, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was 1 year old. Since then, she’s faced a lot of physical challenges like immobility and limited muscle movement. At Easter Seals, she practices her short- and longterm goals, like rolling over and repetitive movements. “She’s really come a long way

this year,” her mom, Christiana Buffington said. “Her therapists get down on the floor with her, right on her level. Easter Seals has been amazing.” Mikayla, who’s celebrating her birthday next week with a pool party, loves to swim, play outside with her friends and listen to music. And her mother says despite what people might think, she’s very smart. “She understands a lot more than she seems,” she said. “She can’t show you and talk, so you don’t think she understands. But she does.” Caleb Wilson, the other Easter Seal ambassador, also struggles with speech as a side effect from his countless surgeries and health

struggles. What first looked like a common cold turned into a lipoblastoma tumor that kept finding its way into the young boy’s body. From his lung to his back, Caleb has had a lot of complications due to doctors fighting to remove the tumor. Despite struggling with Horner syndrome and partial function of his right hand, Caleb has retained his positive attitude. “Caleb is inspirational,” his mother, Vivian said. “He’s so happy, and his endurance is amazing. You would not know he’s been through anything. I think that’s what keeps dad and I going.” Visit esvf.org to find out how to donate to the race.

Caleb Wilson has faced all of his struggles with a smile.
